Big Boss fame, Sandalwood actress, Jayalakshmi joined Mahila Empowerment Party (MEP) officially on Friday, April 6 in a ceremony at Leela Palace Hotel in the city. She was welcomed into the party by Dr Nowhera Sheik, national president of MEP.

After her joining Jayalakshmi spoke to the scribes and said, “I have joined the party with the intention of conveying the ideology of MEP and the works done by Dr Nowhera Sheik, national president of the party to the commoner. Today politics has stoped to a very low level. The representatives we have elected and sent are busy abusing each other. In the coming Karnataka assembly elections, the role of MEP will be a deciding factor regardless of any party forming the government. I will contest from any constituency which the party assigns me.”

Speaking on the occasion Dr Nowhera Sheik said, “We will release the list of our party candidates very soon. We have the intention of fielding able candidates in 224 legislative constituencies. Out of the 35% will be represented by women,

SC’s no to immediate reference of Ayodhya case to larger bench
The Supreme Court today did not agree to the fervent plea of an original litigant that the Ayodhya land dispute should be immediately referred to a larger bench as the issue was far more important than that of polygamy among Muslims, for which a constitution bench was constituted.

A special bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, made it clear to senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, representing M Siddiq, that it will decide whether to send the matter to the larger bench only after hearing all parties to the litigation. Siddiq, now deceased, is one of the original litigants in the Babri Masjid-Ram Temple land dispute.
“You (CJI) sent pleas to strike down polygamy immediately to the Constitution Bench, but you are reluctant to send the Babri Masjid case to the Constitution Bench. Is polygamy more important than the right of Muslims to worship in a mosque,” Dhavan posed before the bench which also comprised Justices Ashok Bhushan and S A Nazeer.
Former Attorney General and senior advocate K Parasaran, appearing for a Hindu group, opposed the plea and said it was the prerogative of the apex court to decide on which bench would hear the case.
Parasaran referred to the decision of the apex court that a five-judge bench would hear the petitions against the National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC) Act, despite the submission that earlier seven-judge benches had heard the second and the third judges cases that had brought the collegium system of appointment into force.
The hearing in the sensitive case began in the afternoon with an unusually unpleasant exchange of words between Dhavan and Additional Solicitor Generals (ASGs) Maninder Singh and Tushar Mehta. It started just after the bench assembled at 2 PM after ASG Singh apparently asked Dhavan, who was standing to advance his submissions, to move a bit.
“Sit down, Mr Maninder Singh,” Dhavan said at top of his voice, leading the ASG to retort by saying “behave yourself, Mr Dhavan”. Later during the day, Dhavan also made some uncharitable remarks against Parasaran, which led one of the lawyers to lodge a strong protest.
At the outset, Dhavan, who appeared for the legal representatives of the late Siddiq, referred to a recent apex court order by which the pleas, challenging the practice of polygamy and ‘Nikah Halala’ among Muslims, were sent to a five-judge constitution bench.
“A constitutional explanation was required…this (Ayodhya case) is far more important matter than the polygamy,” he said, adding that he was not required to advance the submissions for referring the case to a larger bench and it should be sent immediately.
“What is more important…The press is here, I am here, please say which is more important for you,” he asked, adding was it necessary to argue if the matter was going to be referred to a larger bench. “Why address the press in your arguments,” the bench asked.
“Because it is their right to know. I want the people of India to know. Press has the right to attend the hearing unless court makes it in-camera,” the senior lawyer replied, adding “the nation wants to know it”. Dhavan then referred to the 1994 verdict in the case of M Ismail Faruqui and assailed certain findings and observations like a mosque is not integral to the prayers offered by the followers of Islam.
The Faruqui verdict had dealt with the constitutional validity of the Acquisition of Certain Area at Ayodhya Act, 1993 by which the Centre had then taken over the disputed site and the adjoining land. The senior lawyer said, “the shadow of Ismail Faruqui has fallen on the minds of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court (which decided the Ayodhya title case).”
He said the Faruqui judgement was needed to be referred to a larger bench as it had said that mosques are not integral to Islam under the Muslim Law and hence, this will have a bearing on the present case as well. He also referred to some other verdicts in support of the arguments that this case should be sent to a larger bench.
Two ‘rath-yatras’ were taken out by BJP leaders that had led to the destruction of the mosque, he said, adding that the land, where the mosque is situated, belongs to the ‘Allah’ even after the demolition of the mosque. He also referred to the judgements that had said that some miscreants had demolished the mosque on December 6, 1992. The advancing of arguments remained inconclusive and would resume on April 27.
Earlier, the apex court had said it would decide on whether to refer to a larger bench the issue of reconsideration of the entire 1994 verdict dealing with the acquisition of the disputed land in Ayodhya or parts of it. The special bench of the apex court is seized of a total of 14 appeals filed against the high court judgement delivered in four civil suits.
A three-judge bench of the Allahabad High Court, in a 2:1 majority ruling, had in 2010 ordered that the land be partitioned equally among three parties — the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

Judge Hearing Salman Khan’s Bail Plea Transferred Along With 86 Others By Rajasthan High Court
An major development took place on late Friday evening. The name of the judge, hearing Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s bail plea in connection with Black Buck poaching case name cropped up in the list of 87 judges, who have been transferred by the Jodhpur (Rajasthan) High Court.

Salman Khan has been lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail since April 5, following the verdict was pronounced with regards to the Black Buck poaching case. The actor has been awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment by the court of Dev Kumar Khatri for killing two Black Bucks, a species on the verge of extinction. Significantly, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam Kothari, Sonali Bendra and Tabu, have been acquitted by the court. These four had also been co-accused in this case.
On Thursday itself, Salman’s counsels put forward the bail plea at the court of District & Sessions Judge, Ravindra Kumar Joshi. However, after Friday’s hearing, Joshi had reserved the order for Saturday. Surprisingly, on Friday evening itself the Rajasthan High Court issued a list of 87 judges to be transferred. Ravindra Joshi’s name includes the list. The transfer include ‑ some on request too. The judge hearing Salman Khan’s bail plea had not asked for a transfer.
However, since this move involves mass transfer and posting, it is being considered a routine one.
Law experts are of the opinion that now it depends on the present judge, if he would want to pronounce the judgment or leave it for his successor.

TN farmers protest by posing as dead bodies
Desiya Thenninthiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam (National South Indian River Interlinking Agriculturist Association) members, headed by its state president P Ayyakannu, covered themselves in sand – up to their necks – on the Cauvery riverbed in Trichy on Friday protesting that the central government form a Cauvery Management Board promptly.

A sum of 25 individuals from the affiliation took an interest in the novel dissent. They acted like dead bodies, wearing garlands. The dissidents affirmed that the BJP-drove central government had been acting against interest of the farmers in Tamil Nadu. They requested that the Center respect the Supreme Court’s request by constituting the Cauvery Management Board instantly. This would enable agriculturists in the state to get the due offer of water from Karnataka, they included.
The protest that started at 10.30 am today ended at around twelve when police compellingly expelled them from the riverbed.

Siddaramaiah unsure about contesting from two constituencies
Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah is yet to take a call on whether to contest from two constituencies or not. While it is certain that he would be contesting from the Chamundeshwari constituency, a call on whether to represent Badami in North Karnataka is yet to be taken.

Siddaramaiah said that party leaders had invited him to contest from Badami or any other constituency in North Karnataka. “However I am yet to decide on this”, he also said.
While expressing confidence of a win from Chamundeshwari, he also accused the BJP and JD(S) of joining hands to try and defeat him. He said that they have tried this in the past as well, but failed.
He further refuted allegations that he was using the state machinery to win the elections. “I have not done it in the past and will not do it now”, he also said.
On his meeting with the actor, Sudeep, Siddaramaiah said that he had come to invite him to inaugurate a cricket tournament. “I have not invited him for the campaign”, Siddaramaiah also said.
Sanjita Chanu wins weightlifting gold, Deepak Lather bronze : CWG Day 2
India’s weightlifting contingent has extended its superb showing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, with Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu winning gold in the women’s 53kg event and teenaged debutant Deepak Lather claiming bronze in the men’s 69kg event.

Weightlifter Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu has delivered India its second gold medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast City, Australia by dominating the women’s 53kg event at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre on Friday.

Teenager Deepak Lather has extended India’s weightlifting medal tally at the 2018 Commonwealth Games to four by winning bronze in the men’s 69kg event. In his first appearance at the quadrennial games, the 18-year-old from the village of Shadipur in Haryana – who was once enrolled at Pune’s Army Sports Institute as a diver – finished with a combined effort of 295kg (136 in snatch and 159 in clean & jerk) at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre on Friday.
India’s quest for men’s hockey gold begins with clash against Pakistan.
India’s mens hockey team will begin its campaign at the XXI Commonwealth Games with a pulsating Pool B clash against arch-rivals Pakistan here on Saturday.

For the Manpreet Singh-led Indian team, 2018 is an important year, filled with multiple high-profile tournaments, with the CWG being the first target of the year. India had lost to Australia in the finals of the 2010 and 2014 editions of the CWG and this time, their aim is again to go the full distance.
“Currently, we are not thinking about how important this year is especially with the World Cup in Bhubaneswar being held in front of home crowd. The only thing we have on our minds right now is our first match against Pakistan on Saturday,” asserted the 25-year-old Manpreet.
The Indian team is grouped in Pool B also with Malaysia, Wales and England. Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne said: “For me, it is about focusing match-by-match, which means we build our rhythm and performance improving upon the little things or areas that has concerned us. We played practice matches against South Africa and Canada and every match we were better and played with good structure.
“It was important that we manage the intensity and mind set during these matches, so we are hungry for the ball in our first match against Pakistan,” stated the 43-year-old Dutchman.
Over the past two years, an India vs Pakistan clash has lost steam from being a blockbuster encounter that it once was. India, Asia’s undoubtedly best team at the moment, has dominated in all the six encounters winning by convincing margins.
“We are not thinking about past results against any team. We are focused on our own performance and would like to play with disciplined structure and ensure zero errors,” said Manpreet on the eve of the opening match.
Though past reults don’t count, India can take confidence not only from their good recent record against Pakistan but also their desirable results in major tournaments such as the Asia Cup 2017 and the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final 2017 where the team won gold and bronze respectively.
“To begin the tournament with a win is always crucial because it sets the right momentum going forward. We have had ideal practice sessions since our arrival in Gold Coast and are ready for a good match against Pakistan,” added Manpreet, who will play a key role in plugging India’s midfield with the forward-line.
Pakistan, on the other hand, will look to register their first win here after playing a disappointing 1-1 draw against Wales on Thursday.
The match pits India against their former chief coach Roelant Oltmans, who is credited for lifting the standard of the side after his appointment as High Performance Director in 2013. The Dutchman has a fair idea about the current Indian players and their qualities.
For India, drag-flick expert Rupinder Pal Singh will form wall of defence along with Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Kothajit Singh, Gurinder Singh and Amit Rohidas. The goalpost will be guarded by experienced P.R. Sreejesh.
India’s midfield will see skipper Manpreet in the lead role, ably supported by the experience of Chinglensana along with young blood in Sumit and Vivek Sagar Prasad.
The Indian attack will feature a combination between experience and youth as S.V. Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Gurjant Singh and Dilpreet Singh are all in the team.
Dilpreet Singh and Vivek — who made their international debuts during the New Zealand tour — have been rewarded with this opportunity for a good show where the duo scored in important games.
Indian squad:
Goalkeepers: P.R. Sreejesh, Suraj Karkera.
Defenders: Rupinder Pal Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Kothajit Singh Kadangbam, Gurinder Singh, Amit Rohidas.
Midfielders: Manpreet Singh (Captain), Chinglensana Singh Kangujam (VC), Sumit, Vivek Sagar Prasad.
