Say No to Binge Drinking

December 27, 2017 by Nasheman

Dr. Lorance Peter, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist, Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road share some inputs on the symptoms and ways it can be prevented
Bengaluru, December 27, 2017: It’s December and yay the party time of the year is back. The week from Christmas to New Year is the time where a lot of social gatherings and public events happen and people drinking alcohol is very common. While many of them consume alcoholic beverages responsibly, binge drinking has become common nowadays among people from all ages.

What is binge drinking?

Binge drinking is where a person drinks alcohol until he/she is totally drunk or intoxicated and this increases the risk of violence, leading to injuries many a times. It is also associated with numerous health conditions, which would result in both emotional and economical costs. Drinking 6 units of alcohol in a very short span, say about an hour, would increase the blood alcohol concentration level. But drinking the same amount over several hours, as well as eating food, would incur a less effect on one’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

Some of the numerous consequences include:

Liver disorders leading to dysfunction
Stroke
Hypertension and cardiovascular disorders
Accidents (R. T.A)
Unsafe sex, which risks the changes of sexually transmitted diseases
Psychological issues

Here are some safe alcohol consumption tips to our party crowd:

Alcohol consumers should be aware of how much alcohol can be consumed safely, and they should start limiting themselves, considering the further consequences.

It’s always recommended not to refill the half empty- glass, as it’s difficult to keep a count on the amount of alcohol consumed.

Alcoholic consumption has to be spaced in-between by having a glass of water or soft drinks.

It’s always advisable to avoid party fun games like “rounds” or “shouts”, as this encourages the crowd to keep up with the person who is drinking the fastest, and the chances of binge drinking is always high here.

To avoid excessive alcohol drinking, one has to keep themselves busy by dancing, chatting or having fun, because sitting idle can keep oneself motivated to consume alcohol.
Planning a party- venue which is alcohol-free is always advisable.

From the concern of better health, it’s always advisable to cut back on alcohol, which in turn helps in improvised health. Cutting down on alcohol is always beneficial to manage your weight, as some drinks contain high calories. Intoxication also leads to a range of injuries like the one’s associated with drink and drive, showcasing poor behaviour and also risk one’s mental and physical well-being.

845 rescued, 661 still missing since Cyclone Ockhi

December 27, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The defence forces and other agencies involved in rescue operations when Cyclone Ockhi battered southern India saved 845 lives, but 661 fishermen still remain missing, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

In a written response to a question, Nirmala said the navy, the air force and the coast guard saved the lives of 821 people until December 20. Another 24 lives were saved by other agencies, including merchant navy vessels.

Of the total 845 people rescued, 453 were from Tamil Nadu, 362 from Kerala, and 30 from Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands. However, the defence minister said 661 fishermen were still missing.

The majority of those untraceable are from Tamil Nadu (400) and Kerala (261), the worst-hit states when Cyclone Ockhi swept through the coastlines of southern India.
The cyclone had caught many fishermen off guard after it formed quickly in the Arabian Sea in early December.

Hegde’s ‘change the Constitution’ comment disrupts RS

December 27, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde has “no right” to be in the House or in the government, the Opposition said on Wednesday, disrupting the Rajya Sabha over the Karnataka MP’s controversial remarks that the ruling BJP was “here to change the Constitution” and remove the word “secular” from it.

Opposition members vociferously raised the Hegde issue as soon as the House convened after a four-day break amid continued logjam over Congress’ demand for apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks against his predecessor Manmohan Singh.

Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad lashed out at the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party and said if any person lacked faith in the Indian Constitution, he did not deserve to be in the House or in the government.

“The Minister has no trust in the Constitution and has no right to be the minister. He has no right to be a Member of Parliament either,” Azad said.

The Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship at a function in Kukanur in Karnataka on Monday urged people to “claim with pride that they are Muslim, Christian, Lingayat, Brahmin, or a Hindu” and said: “Those who, without knowing about their parental blood, call themselves secular, they don’t have their own identity…They don’t know about their parentage, but they are intellectuals.

“Some people say the Constitution says secular and you must accept it. We will respect the Constitution, but the Constitution has changed several times and it will change in the future too.

“We are here to change the Constitution and we’ll change it soon.”

As the Parliament met for the first time after an extended weekend, the Opposition sought a discussion over the issue.

Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu denied the request but allowed the Opposition members to briefly make a mention about it in the Zero Hour.

Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agarwal said Hegde had abused the Constitution and insulted its architects like B.R. Ambedkar.

“It is like abusing the Constitution. Can anyone remain Minister by abusing the Constitution? It is an insult to Babasaheb Ambedkar,” Agarwal said.

The ruling BJP members took objections to Agarwal unnecessarily dragging Ambedkar into the row. They also protested, triggering slogans from the Opposition.

Naidu then adjourned the House till 12 p.m.

We are here to change the Constitution, says BJP minister Anantkumar Hegde

December 26, 2017 by Nasheman

Minister of State for Employment and Skill Development Anantkumar Hegde on Sunday claimed that secular people do not have an “identity of their parental blood”, adding that the Constitution needs to be amended

Hegde was speaking at an event in Yelburga taluk of Koppal district of Karnataka. “Those claiming to be secular and progressive do not have an identity of their parents and their blood,” The Hindu quoted him as saying. “I will be happy if someone identifies as Muslim, Christian, Brahmin, Lingayat or Hindu. But trouble will arise if they say they are secular.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said the Constitution is currently based on the thoughts of BR Ambedkar. “I respect the Constitution, but the Constitution has changed according to the times on many occasions in the past and it will change in the future. We are here to change the Constitution,” Hegde said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticised the Union minister’s statement, saying his comments exposed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s views on Ambedkar. “I do not want to stoop to his level,” Siddaramaiah said. “We know our language and culture. He is a Union minister, but spits venom.”

Hegde’s comments come months ahead of the Assembly elections in the state. The Karnataka Assembly’s tenure ends in May 2018.

In November, Hegde had stirred a controversy after he said that if the Karnataka chief minister could celebrate Tipu Jayanti, people would soon start celebrating “Ajmal Kasab Jayanti”.

PM must intervene, resolve Mahadayi issue: CM Siddaramaiah

December 26, 2017 by Nasheman

Hubbali: Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah restated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must intervene and resolve the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute between Karnataka and Goa,when addressing the reporters in Hubbali, on Tuesday.

Siddaramaiah again expressed his displeasure over the fact that Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar had written to Karnataka BJP President B S Yeddyurappa instead of him and that he was willing to hold talks with BSY and not to him. “As Parrikar has written to BSY and not me, the letter has no legal value. Both Goa and Centre are enacting a political drama,” Siddaramaiah added.

Reacting strongly to BSY’s remarks regarding dissolving the Assembly and declaring elections, Siddaramaiah asked,”Is Yeddyurappa the election commissioner? People have given us a mandate for five years. Let BJP meet us in May during the polls,”

Kalasa-Banduri Raitha Horata Samiti has called a bundh in four districts protesting the delay of the two state governments in resolving the issue and the nonchalance of the Centre for the deadlock. The bundh has been called in Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag and Bagalkot districts on December 27 from 6 am to 6 pm. If the bundh fails to induce the government to act, a dharna would be held in front of the parliamentarians of the region, Samiti leaders informed.

Israel ‘in touch with 10 countries’ over embassy moves

December 26, 2017 by Nasheman

Tzipi Hotovely says some European countries are among the ones considering embassy moves [Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Israel’s deputy foreign minister has said her government is “in contact with at least 10 countries” over the potential relocation of their embassies to Jerusalem.

Tzipi Hotovely’s comments on Monday came a day after Guatemala announced plans to move its embassy to Jerusalem, following a similar decision by the US earlier this month which sparked widespread international condemnation and mass rallies across the Muslim world.

Speaking to state radio, Hotovely did not specify the countries in question but said “some” of them are “in Europe”.

“So far we have only seen the beginning,” she said, adding that US President Donald Trump’s decision would “trigger a wave” of followers.

Widespread protests
The status of Jerusalem is one of the main sticking points in efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Palestinian leaders want occupied East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, while Israel says the city cannot be divided.

Breaking with decades of policy, Trump announced on December 6 that the US recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and said his administration would be moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to the Holy City.

Currently, there are no embassies in Jerusalem.

Following Trump’s announcement, a resounding majority of UN member states – 128 countries – last week voted in favour of a resolution declaring Washington’s move “null and void”.

Guatemala, the US, Israel and six other countries voted against the resolution at the emergency UN General Assembly meeting on Thursday. No European country voted against the resolution, but several abstained.

See how each country voted here.

In a statement on Monday, the Palestinian foreign ministry criticised Guatemala for its plans to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem.

“It’s a shameful and illegal act that goes totally against the wishes of church leaders in Jerusalem” and of last week’s UN General Assembly resolution, it said in a statement.

Bolivian President Evo Morales also slammed Guatemala for following in Washington’s footsteps.

“In a complete act of mockery of the international community, the government of Guatemala ignores the resolution of the UN (General) Assembly and decides to move its embassy to Jerusalem,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Trump’s decision to unilaterally recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital pitted the US against some of its own allies, and prompted Palestinian leaders to say that Washington can no longer have a role in the peace process.

The move also triggered a wave of mass rallies in major international cities – from Jakarta, through Istanbul, to Rabat, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.

In the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, demonstrations have been met with violence by Israeli forces, who fire live ammunition, disperse tear gas canisters, and carry out a wave of arrests against protesters.

More than 2,900 people have been left injured and more than 500 have been jailed.

In the Gaza Strip, several Israeli air raids killed at least six people and wounded many others.

In total, at least 15 people have been killed across the occupied Palestinian territories in the last three weeks.

Vijay Rupani sworn-in as chief minister of Gujarat

December 26, 2017 by Nasheman

Gandhinagar: Vijay Rupani was today sworn in as the chief minister of Gujarat for the second consecutive term after the BJP won the recently-held Assembly elections in the state. Rupani, 61, and his deputy Nitin Patel were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor O P Kohli at a grand ceremony in Gandhinagar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and chief ministers of various BJP-ruled states attended the ceremony. Before the swearing-in ceremony, Rupani, sporting an orange-coloured jacket, and Patel greeted the chief ministers of BJP-ruled states who came to attend the ceremony.

Rupani and his wife also offered prayers at the Panchdev Mahadev temple here before the swearing-in ceremony. With 99 MLAs, the BJP has a simple majority in the 182-member Assembly, 16 less than its 2012 tally of 115.

The opposition Congress, which had won 61 seats in 2012, managed to increase its tally to 77. The strength of the Congress and its allies in the new House is 80. Rupani and Nitin Patel were elected as the leader and deputy leader, respectively, of the BJP legislature party at its meeting on December 22.

3 Pakistani soldiers killed in cross-LoC firing by Indian Army: ISPR

December 26, 2017 by Nasheman

Islamabad: Three Pakistani soldiers were today killed and one was injured in cross-border shelling by Indian security forces along the Line of Control (LoC), Pakistani media reported.

“The shelling occurred at Rukh Chakri sector in Rawlakot and received a strong response from Pakistani forces,” the DawnNews reported, quoting Pakistani military’s media wing the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

India had initiated the “unprovoked ceasefire violation” that led to an exchange of fire between the two countries’ border forces, the ISPR alleged. The development came two days after the Pakistani troops killed an Indian Army Major and three jawans and injured another in Keri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.

The truce between India and Pakistan along the International Border, Line of Control and the Actual Ground Position Line in Jammu and Kashmir came into force in November, 2003.

Three girls rescued from Indore ashram of ‘godman’ Dixit

December 26, 2017 by Nasheman

Indore: Another ‘ashram’ of molestation-accused ‘godman’ Baba Virendra Dev Dixit has been found in Indore of Madhya Pradesh and three girls rescued from there, said police on Tuesday. Two of the rescued are minors.

The minor girls have been handed over to Childline India Foundation — a non-government organisation for children in distress — while the elder one has been sent to the local unit of Nari Niketan. The registers recovered from this ashram mention names of several other women, including some old women.

“We came to know of a spiritual centre of the ‘godman’ in Subhash Nagar area of the city. We raided the centre on Monday night and rescued three girls, out of which two are from Bihar and one from West Bengal,” Indore Deputy Inspector General of Police Harinarayan Chari Mishra told IANS.

The police officer said: “The two girls have been sent to Childline and the third to Nari Niketan, and action is being initiated against the house owner for not informing the police about the irregularities taking place there.”

Last week, the Delhi Commission for Women had rescued more than 45 minor girls from two different ashrams run by Dixit where girls and women were allegedly being kept in illegal confinement in the name of religious preaching.

The Delhi High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the matter and slammed the Delhi Police for not taking any action on various FIRs of girls and women allegedly lured to an ashram in Rohini area on the pretext of spiritual guidance and raped there.

Dixit is on the run ever since the raids on his national capital-based ashrams last week.
