Ahmednagar: Man rushes towards Fadnavis with job plea, detained

November 4, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmednagar: Security officials went into a tizzy when a youth rushed towards Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to give a job application here on Saturday. The youth, who is speech impaired, was detained by the police.

The incident occurred in social crusader Anna Hazare’s native Ralegan-Siddhi village where Fadnavis had gone to lay the foundation stone for the first solar power project under the newly-launched Mukhyamantri Agricultural Solar Feeder Scheme.

As he addressed the gathering with Hazare and others on the stage, a mute young man – later identified as Prashant Mahadev Kanade — lunged towards the stage, bypassing the security cordon.

However, the police immediately caught him and whisked him away from the venue to a waiting van, said L.M. Pawar of Ahmednagar Police Control.

Hazare’s aide Suresh Pathare said the jobless man merely wanted to submit a job application and did not indulge in any kind of violence as speculated in some quarters.

Locals say that Kanade, in his 20s, has been very frustrated after he failed to secure a job anywhere owing to his handicap, though he is ready to work even as a peon or security guard in a bank or any government undertaking.

In January, he reportedly sent an application to the CMO, but did not get any response and took the opportunity to approach Fadnavis at the event today.

Balfour Declaration at 100: From Ramallah to Pretoria

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

People in various parts of the world have staged protests on the centenary of Britain’s Balfour Declaration, which promised a homeland for the Jewish people and paved the way for the occupation of Palestine.

Thousands gathered in Ramallah, administrative capital of the occupied Palestinian territories, on Thursday to march to the British cultural centre, according to official Palestinian media.

A statement from the office of President Mahmoud Abbas called for an apology from Britain, recognition of Palestine and compensation for the Palestinian people in political, moral and material terms.

“Here in Ramallah, for Palestinians, this declaration is seen very much as the moment a hundred years of disposition, displacement and occupation began,” Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett, reporting from Ramallah, said.

Dozens of others gathered in a separate protest outside the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem.

A hundred thousand signatures and hundreds of letters from Palestinian high school students were presented to the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem, according to Sawsan Safadi, an official from the Palestinian Ministry of Education.

The letters expressed the students’ feelings about the legacy of the declaration.

Khadija Khalaf, a 17-year-old Palestinian high school student from East Jerusalem, was among the protesters who carried the letters.

“We came here holding signatures of 100,000 students from the schools of Palestine protesting against the Balfour promise,” Khalaf told Al Jazeera.

“After 100 years, we the Palestinians have not taken our rights. We hope that they hear our voices as children.”

Protesters shouted slogans such as “Down with the Brits” and “Justice, power, freedom: Our state is Palestinian”.

“In addition to admitting its mistake, it must assume responsibility for the damage that befell the Palestinians as a result of the Balfour Declaration and the policies that ensued,” Zakaria Odeh, a 64-year-old protester, told Al Jazeera.

Protest in Pretoria
In Pretoria, South Africa, hundreds gathered outside the Israeli embassy in a protest against the Israeli occupation of Palestine, organised by the Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF).

Protesters, dressed in the characteristic red T-shirts of the EFF, held placards with slogans calling for an end to “Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestinians” and a halt to attacks on the Gaza Strip, as they danced and sang outside the heavily guarded embassy.

“Away with apartheid Israel, away,” the crowd shouted.

Julius Malema, leader of the EFF, urged the crowd to look beyond their own context and to consider the plight of the Palestinians.

He also called for a one-state solution where Jews and Palestinians could live in peace.

Malema made an impassioned appeal to South Africans to stop working with Israel, even asking South Africans to stop travelling to the country in solidarity with Palestine.

“We asking all South Africans to stop doing business with Israel, to stop visiting Israel. We are returning the favour to the people of Palestine who stood with us,” Malema said to loud cheers.

“We call for the release of Marwan Barghouti, who is in sitting in Israeli jail, in quite the same way that Nelson Mandela was in jail for all those years,” Zaakirah Vadi, communications officer for the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, an anti-apartheid organisation, told the crowd.

Roads around the embassy were closed off, and police had closed the entrance to the building.

Many South Africans see the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the policies applied there as similar to apartheid, the institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination implemented by the white minority in their country until 1991.

In Ankara, the Turkish capital, dozens of members of the Anatolian Youth Association, a conservative organisation, marked the Balfour Declaration centenary with slogans and placards.

At Sakarya University in northwest Turkey, the Humanitarian Relief Foundation, an aid group, led protesters in a rally.

India pip Japan to reach women’s Asia Cup hockey final

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Kakamigahara: India set their date with China in the final of the 9th women’s Asia Cup after beating hosts Japan 4-2 in the semi-final in Kakamigahara on Friday.

The Indian women rode on a brace from Gurjit Kaur and field goals from Navjot Kaur and Lalremsiami to advance to a fourth Asia Cup final. India won the title in 2004 and finished runners-up in 1999 and 2009.

Gurjit gave India a perfect start, successfully converting a penalty corner in the seventh minute before Navjot’s field goal in the ninth minute made it 2-0 for the tourists.

In the same minute, Gurjit inflated India’s lead to 3-0 with a brilliant field goal.

But Japan was no pushover. It managed to dominate the Indians in the second quarter and reduced the deficit to 2-3 through field goals from Shiho Tsujii (17’) and Yui Ishibashi (28’).

The third quarter saw Lalremsiami score her first goal of the tournament to put India ahead 4-2, and the defenders did well to keep the Japanese at bay thereon.

India entered the knockout stage of the tournament following big wins over Singapore 10-0, China 4-1 and Malaysia 2-0 to top their pool, and on Thursday defeated Kazakhstan 7-1 in the quarter-final.

On Sunday, India will aim to avenge their 3-5 loss to China in 2009 as the winner of this year’s edition will qualify for the 2018 World Cup in England.

New Delhi: Nirbhaya’s brother is now a pilot, thanks to Rahul Gandhi, reveals mother

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Nirbhaya’s brother is a pilot and parents Asha Devi and Badrinath Singh cannot stop thanking Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for making it possible.

“Gandhi taught us never to quit attitude,” says Asha Devi. Nirbhaya’s brother was in Class 12 during the time of his sister’s death and was deeply affected by it. “Rahul Gandhi was the one who counselled him and motivated him to achieve something good in life to support the family. Rahul asked him to pursue a pilot’s training. The tragedy hurt my son but could not stop him,” she says.

Asha Devi reveals that her son initially prepared for Indian Army’s recruitment examination but later found it difficult.

In 2013, he enrolled into Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi, a government-founded autonomous institute in Rae Bareli — the Lok Sabha constituency of Rahul Gandhi’s mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

While pursuing his pilot training course, my son used to keep a track of the Nirbhaya trial, says Asha Devi.

“When he was studying, Rahul used to talk to him over the phone and during his 18-month pilot’s training course, he taught him to adopt a ‘never quit’ attitude. Even Priyanka Gandhi used to call us,” she said.

Badrinath Singh who works at the Indira Gandhi International Airport says his son has joined IndiGo Airlines and is already flying planes. “Gandhi helped us emotionally as well as monetarily and all on humanitaranian grounds. He asked us to keep this all in secret,” says the father.

Singh adds that he has nothing to do with Gandhi’s politics, “but the truth remains the truth, and we cannot thank him enough”.

Singh says that he has never flown in a plane and hopes that his first time will be the one flown by his son as pilot.

Singh’s another son is pursuing engineering in Pune.

‘Nirbhaya’ the victim of Delhi’s brutal gang rape was an aspiring physiotherapy student and a mentor to her two brothers. She had great ambitions in life and one of them was ensuring her brothers receive good education. Her life and dreams were cut short in December 2012, after she was brutally gang-raped. She succumbed to her injuries 13 days later.

She came to be known as ‘Nirbhaya’ (meaning fearless) in the days after her brutal gang-rape. The brutality of the crime was such that it shook the entire nation and triggered anger and protests on the streets.

All the six accused were later arrested. One of them died in jail while the rest four were convicted of the rape and murder and awarded death sentences. One of the accused, a juvenile, was convicted and ordered to remain in a correctional facility for three years.

Bengaluru: Amit Shah’s ‘desperate’ attempt to communalise situation, charges Siddaramaiah

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today hit back at BJP chief Amit Shah for attacking his government for celebrating ‘Tipu Jayanti’ and accused him of making a ‘desperate attempt’ to communalise the situation ahead of the state Assembly polls.

A day after coming under fire by the BJP chief at a rally here, Siddaramaiah claimed the election had brought ‘tourists like Shah’ who display ignorance about the state.

“We celebrate birthdays of 26 leaders & builders of Nava Karnataka. AmitShah in a desperate attempt to communalise, picks on Tipu Jayanthi,” Siddaramaiah said in a tweet.

“Election is coming! It brings tourists like Amit Shah who display ignorance about our state and call Kannada Rajyotsava as ‘Karnataka Mahotsav’,” he claimed.

Flagging-off a 75-day state-wide ‘yatra’ spearheaded by BJP state mascot B S Yeddyurappa at a rally here yesterday, Shah had flayed ‘ Tipu Jayanti’ celebrations, accusing the Siddaramaiah government of practising ‘vote bank politics.’

“Yesterday was November 1. It was Karnataka’s formation day. Karnataka Mahotsav (Rajyotsava) celebrations had to happen with grandeur, but Siddaramaiah government had no interest in Karnataka Mahotsava, they are more enthusiastic towards celebrating Tipu Jayanti on November 10,” he had said.

In a series of tweets in Kannada, Siddaramaiah defended the ‘Tipu Jayanti’ celebrations.

“People of the state have accepted Tipu Jayanti. Tipu was a patriot. He was not against Hindus or any other community,” he said on Twitter.

Siddaramaiah also took a jibe at the state BJP leaders, alleging they had once described Tipu Sultan as a freedom fighter but had become ‘enlightened’ after learning lessons from Shah.

He claimed the BJP yatra was a failure on the very first day, proving that the people were not with the party.

The BJP has been opposing the event as it sees Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of erstwhile Mysore kingdom, as a ‘brutal killer’ and a ‘religious bigot’ who converted people to Islam.

Assembly elections are due in Karnataka early next year in which the BJP is hoping to capture power, unseating the government-led by Siddaramaiah.

Making history, the BJP had installed its first-ever government in the South in 2008 before losing power to the Congress.

SC seeks Centre’s reply on pleas challenging Aadhaar Act

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday sought the government’s response to four petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act and linking of bank accounts and mobile numbers with the 12-digit biometric identification number.

The apex court did not pass any interim order in the matter saying that final hearing in all Aadhaar-related issues would start before another bench in the last week of this month and the Centre has already extended the deadline till December 31.

A bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan, however, said the banks and telecom service providers should indicate the last date of linking bank accounts and mobile numbers with Aadhaar in the messages sent by them to their customers.

“We make it clear that in the messages sent by banks and telecom service providers, the date of December 31, 2017, and February 6, 2018, shall also be indicated as the last date of linking Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile numbers,” the bench said.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for one of the petitioners, referred to a recently filed affidavit by the Centre and said the government has said the deadline for linking Aadhaar may be extended till March 31, 2018.

The bench, however, said the petitioners can raise this issue before the court which would hear all Aadhaar-related matters in the last week of November.

“There is no doubt that these arguments need consideration. The matter is going to come up in the last week of November and the time (to link Aadhaar with bank accounts) has been extended till December 31,” the bench said.

On October 30, a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had said that a constitution bench would be constituted and Aadhaar-related matters would come up for hearing before it in November last.

Several petitions challenging the Centre’s move to make Aadhaar card mandatory for availing various services and benefits of welfare schemes have been filed in the apex court.

Prakash Raj backs Kamal on ‘Hindu extremism’

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Chennai: Actor-filmmaker Prakash Raj on Friday supported actor Kamal Haasan’s views on “Hindu extremists”.

“If instilling fear in the name of religion… culture… morality is not terrorizing… then what is it. Just asking,” tweeted Prakash Raj, a popular name in the Kannada, Telugu and Tamil film industries.

In an accompanying post titled “To whomsoever it may concern”, Prakash Raj wrote: “If abusing and manhandling young couples on the streets of my country in the name of morality is not terrorizing… If taking law into hands and lynching people on slightest doubt of cow slaughter is not terrorizing… If trolling with abuse, threat… to silence even a slightest voice of dissent is not terrorizing… Then what is terrorizing… Just asking.”

His comment came after Kamal wrote in a Tamil magazine that earlier rightwing Hindus used to argue but without indulging in violence. But as their “cunningness” started to fail, they began to resort to violence.

“Extremism has spread into their camp as well,” said Kamal, who is said to be preparing for a political plunge. “This extremism is not a victory or progress to those who call themselves Hindus.”

Hamas hands over Gaza border crossings to PA

November 1, 2017 by Nasheman

by Linah Alsaafin, Al Jazeera

Hamas has handed over administrative control of five border crossings in Gaza to the Palestinian Authority.

Wednesday’s handover, the first in over a decade, is part of a deal agreed on in the latest round of Egypt-brokered reconciliation talks between Hamas and the PA-ruled Fatah political party in Cairo on October 12.

Fatah spokesperson Osama Qawasmeh told Al Jazeera that no conditions were set by Fatah or Hamas for the handover.

“The issue is simply a matter of restoring the status quo back under the Palestinian Authority’s control, as was the case before the 2007 split,” he said, referring to the political schism that ended with Hamas taking over the Gaza Strip after an attempted coup by US-backed Fatah strongman Mohammad Dahlan.

The PA will take administrative charge of the three cargo crossings including the Karam Abu Salem crossing on the Egyptian border, as well as the Rafah and Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossings – the latter which is controlled by Israel in the north of the Strip.

In a statement on Tuesday, the PA minister of civil affairs, Hussein al-Sheikh, said the national unity government is prepared to work closely with Egyptian authorities to prepare the Rafah border crossing for operation by November 15, as specified by the 2005 Agreement on Movement and Access.

Rafah, the main border crossing in the south of the Gaza Strip, has been largely closed to Gaza’s population of two million since Hamas took over.

The other crossing, Erez, is located in the north of the strip and is run by Israel.

The PA will also be in charge of the three cargo crossing points of Karni, Kerem Shalom (Karem Abu Salem) and Sufa.

‘Better quality of life’
Qawasmeh said that this handover would make the lives of Palestinians in Gaza “much easier”.

“This will no doubt help enable a huge part of people’s lives to travel outside the Gaza Strip for whatever reason such as seeking medical treatment, undertaking a scholarship in a university, and leisurely travel,” he said.

“The movement of products will be facilitated quicker and will make it easier for import and export trade,” he added.

Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesperson, echoed his counterpart.

“We hope that handing over control would lead to a better quality of life for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” he told Al Jazeera.

He stressed that handing over control was not a security issue, but rather a logistical one.

Governing the ‘mega-prison’
However, Alaa Tartir, the programme director of the Palestinian policy network Al-Shabaka, said that the transfer of administrative border control “does not necessarily translate into a meaningful national reconciliation and unity”.

“Assuming that the mere replacement of personnel at the borders and crossings will lift the siege on Gaza is a naive and dangerous assumption,” Tartir said.

“It is a test to examine the fragility or durability of the recent reconciliation agreement.”

“It is crucial to acknowledge that Israel, as an occupying power, will remain the de facto holder of power over borders and crossings,” he continued.

“This will only change when the Israeli occupation ends. The Hamas-Fatah infighting about who will ‘manage’ the borders and crossings is merely a fight about who will ‘govern’ the mega-prison.”

Since Hamas took over in 2007, Israel has imposed an air, naval and land blockade on the Gaza Strip, a stretch of land measuring 51km in length and 11km in width. Earlier this year, the PA added pressure on Hamas’ government by requesting Israel to cut off its electricity supply to Gaza.

A matter of protocol
Qawasmeh said that the closure of the border crossings was due to the absence of a “legitimate government” and that things are finally “going back to normal”.

He also said that the actual transfer of border control would not have much pomp and fanfare.

“The process of handing over control is just a matter of protocol,” Qawasmeh said. “The real case is the decision of Hamas – which up until now has been positive – to completely transfer all powers to the national unity government as was stipulated in the latest reconciliation agreement.”

The next round of reconciliation talks will take place in Cairo on November 21, where Qassem and Qawasmeh said the discussion would focus on logistics of administration and security of the Gaza Strip.

Upendra launches Karnataka Prajnavantha Janata party

November 1, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Sandalwood actor Upendra announced the launch of his regional party named ‘Karnataka Prajnavantha Janata party’ at Gandhi Bhavan here today.

Earlier in August he had announced that he would be taking a plunge into politics. On Tuesday, he briefed the media about the party’s objectives and aspirations.

Addressing the gathering wearing khakhi uniform, Upendra stated that anybody willing to bring change in the society can join the party. The primary motto of the Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janata Paksha is to provide good education, health and infrastructure for the citizens.

“The party will contest from all the 224 constituencies in next year’s assembly polls but ruled out entering into a prepoll or post-poll alliance with any other party” he said.

“People in villages should not turn towards cities for better livelihood and they should get everything in their place itself,” he added.

Upendra reiterated that he wants to replace the modus operandi of the current day political system with ‘Prajakeeya’ which sincerely aims to create public servants rather than leaders who take the citizens for granted.

“We have around 50-60 candidates and I want to be their brand ambassador,” he added.

A website and mobile app will be launched on November 10 which will allow people to share their ideas and problems.

“The party will contest from all the 224 constituencies in next year’s assembly polls but ruled out entering into a prepoll or post-poll alliance with any other party” he said.

SC seeks details of 1,581 cases against MPs and MLAs

November 1, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to place before it details regarding 1,581 cases involving MPs and MLAs, as declared by politicians at the time of filing their nominations during the 2014 general elections.

The apex court asked the government to apprise it as to how many of these 1,581 cases have been disposed of within one year and how many have ended either in conviction or acquittal of the accused. A bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha also sought the details of criminal cases lodged against politicians from 2014 till date as well as on the disposal of these matters.

During the hearing, the Centre told the bench that decriminalisation of politics has to be done and it was not averse to the setting up of special courts to deal with cases involving politicians and speedy disposal of these matters.

It informed the bench that the recommendations of the Election Commission of India and the Law Commission favouring life-time disqualification of politicians convicted in criminal cases was under the active consideration of the government.

The bench directed the Centre to place before it the scheme for setting up of such special courts and also indicate the amount of funds that could be earmarked for the purpose. The apex court asked the government to place these details before it within six weeks and fixed the matter for hearing on December 13.

The ECI supported the plea seeking life ban on politicians convicted in criminal cases and said they have already made recommendations on this to the Centre. The top court was hearing petitions seeking to declare the provisions of the Representation of People (RP) Act, which bar convicted politician from contesting elections for six years after serving jail term, as ultra vires to the Constitution.

Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has filed a PIL in the matter, while several others have come to the apex court as intervenors. The apex court had on July 12 pulled up the ECI for not taking a clear stand on a plea seeking barring of convicted politicians for life.

The Centre, in its affidavit, had said the prayer sought by the petitioner seeking life-time bar on convicted lawmakers was not maintainable and the plea should be dismissed. The petition has also sought a direction to the Centre and the EC to fix minimum educational qualification and a maximum age limit for persons contesting polls.
