WhatsApp’s ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature finally rolled out

October 28, 2017 by Nasheman

San Francisco: WhatsApp has finally rolled out its most anticipated feature ‘Delete for Everyone’ that allows its over one billion users revoke their messages in case they sent those to a wrong person or a group.

You can only delete messages for everyone for up to seven minutes after sending.

“Once seven minutes have passed, there is no way to delete messages for everyone,” Facebook-owned WhatsApp said in its updated FAQ on Friday.

“In order for messages to be successfully deleted for everyone, both you and your recipient must be using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone,” the micro-blogging platform said.

WhatsApp was working on this feature for almost a year.

You can now delete messages for everyone or just for yourself.

“Deleting messages for everyone allows you to delete specific messages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat. This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat or if the message you sent contains a mistake,” WhatsApp noted.

Messages you successfully delete for everyone will be replaced with “This message was deleted” in your recipients’ chats.

Similarly, if you see “This message was deleted” in a chat, it means that the sender deleted their message for everyone.

This is how it works:

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.

Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu.

Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Everyone”.

“If you or your recipient are not using the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, iPhone or Windows Phone, this feature will not be supported,” WhatsApp said.

Recipients may see your message before it’s deleted or if deletion was not successful.

According to WABetaInfo, a fan website that tracks WhatsApp, this feature works for messages in text, videos, GIFs, pictures, voice messages, quoted messages and status replies.

The second part is to delete messages only for yourself.

Deleting messages for yourself allows you to delete your copy of messages you’ve sent or received from your phone.

“This has no effect on your recipients’ chats. Your recipients will still see the messages in their chat screen,” WhatsApp said.

For this, open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.

Tap and hold the message and choose Delete from the menu.

Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once. Then tap “Delete for Me”.

“The feature is being slowly rolled out and users can reinstall WhatsApp in order to download from the server the latest configuration,” WABetaInfo said.

Saudi crown prince promises ‘return to moderate Islam’

October 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made his remarks during the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh [File: Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday said Saudi Arabia will “return” to a “moderate Islam that is open to all religions” – comments likely to rile staunch conservatives in the Gulf kingdom.

The crown prince also announced Saudi Arabia will “eradicate promoters of extremist thoughts”, saying the country was not like this in the past.

“We are returning to what we were before – a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world,” the 32-year-old heir to the throne said.

Bin Salman, also known as MBS, made the remarks during a Future Investment Initiative (FII) summit in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

FII is an international event at which Saudi Arabia seeks out investment into the kingdom from around the world.

During Tuesday’s event, Salman voiced his confidence in Saudi Arabia’s younger generation and its ability to adjust to a post-oil world, mentioning among other things the benefits of solar power.

Bin Salman’s remarks come a month after Saudi Arabia made a landmark decision to allow women to legally drive vehicles starting in June 2018, in a move that was criticised by some conservative voices on Saudi social media but welcomed by rights activists.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive.

MBS was appointed crown prince in June this year.

Despite pledges of reform, critics have highlighted the continuing crackdown on human rights activists and others challenging the status quo.

Pune ODI engulfed in corruption scandal, curator sacked

October 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Pune: The second One-Day International (ODI) between India and New Zealand here became embroiled in controversy hours before its start with allegations of corruption against curator Pandurang Salgaoncar.

A television channel claims to have conducted a sting operation in which reporters posing as bookies approached the curator asking for a pitch which will favour the fast bowlers of one of the competing teams.

The curator is seen and heard on camera agreeing to the demands. “It will be done,” Salgaoncar is quoted as saying by India Today.

“It is a very good pitch on which 337 runs will be chaseable. There is no doubt about it,” he added.

“I told you this will be a 340-run wicket either way.”

Salgaoncar and others are also seen walking on the pitch. “It’s not allowed still we did it. The BCCI observer is also sitting around,” Salgaoncar said.

“No stranger can access the pitch. That is the BCCI and ICC’s law. If someone asks me tomorrow I will say no one came, I don’t know,” he added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) have decided to terminate Salgaoncar’s contract.

“After reports stating an alleged malpractice from the MCA pitch curator Pandurang Salgaonkar, the MCA has dismissed Salgaonkar from the position of curator with immediate effect,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“The BCCI appointed curator Ramesh Mhamunkar was immediately made the point person for the centre wicket and the field of play for the 2nd ODI between India and New Zealand.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) Match Referee Chris Broad inspected the pitch ahead of the match and cleared the same for the game to go ahead,” the statement added.

BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary asserted that the issue has been dealt with effectively.

“The BCCI has zero tolerance towards any activity that brings the game to disrepute. We have acted swiftly and ensured that there are no loopholes left ahead of the second ODI between India and New Zealand,” he added.

“It a very serious matter. There is zero tolerance for such things. This is more shocking as Pandurang Salgaoncar himself was a first class cricketer,” he added.

BCCI CEO Rahul Johri too echoed the same opinion.

“Strict action has been taken against the pitch curator and the employment relationship between Pandurang Salgaonkar and MCA stands terminated. The BCCI is in touch with the MCA and appropriate measures will be taken with regard to the matter,” he said.

“The BCCI will continue to enforce strict measures in case of such misconduct in the future.”

The Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has also taken a dim view of the matter.

“We are looking into the issue and are in contact with the concerned officials. We have asked for a detailed report and will act upon it accordingly. At BCCI, we have zero tolerance towards any such activity,” CoA chairman Vinod Rai said.

Salgaoncar represented Maharashtra as a fast bowler from 1971-82. He has also served as chief selector of the Maharashtra Ranji Trophy team.

100 Farmers Found With Same Aadhaar in Maharashtra

October 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government’s attempt of online registration for loan waiver implementation has sent the authorities into a tizzy as names over 100 farmers have been found linked to a single Aadhaar number.

The state government had earlier stressed on online registration by farmers with their Aadhaar, which is a unique identification.

The government has said that the Aadhaar-based linking will avoid any duplication as well as fake accounts getting the benefit of the loan waiver.

A senior official from the Maharashtra cooperation department showed a list of potential beneficiaries of farmers having a common Aadhaar number, which has become a cause of concern for the government.

“We always thought that the Aadhaar number will be our key to check fake beneficiaries. Now, we don’t know how to address this challenge with so many farmers showing the same Aadhaar number. If we have to carry out a manual check, which will take weeks. The farming community is already agitated over the delay in implementation of the scheme,” the official said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called an urgent meeting with bankers today to address issues like this that crop up in the way of speedy implementation of the scheme.

Officials of some banks also admitted that the data they received from the online registration portal Aapale Sarkar – varies the data at their in their records.

The names of some farmers are missing and some do not match with the land size or type of loan.

“In many cases the principal amount and interest are not matching. It leads to suspicion. Unless the state officials have verified the account and its loan amount, we cannot consider that account for loan waiver,” a senior official of a leading public sector bank.

The state government had last week released a sum of Rs 4,000 crore under the first phase of the over Rs 34,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme.

Responding to the Opposition’s criticism against the online system of filling forms for availing the scheme, Fadnavis last week earlier said had that not been done, the banks would have mismanaged funds.

The Centre had earlier this year made Aadhaar mandatory for availing crop insurance policies.

As per the agriculture ministry’s directive, banks were asked to persuade farmers to furnish Aadhaar identification card at the time of sanction/renewal/ disbursement/inspection of the loan or on visit at bank branches.

Jay Shah defamation case: Court issues summons to The Wire

October 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: An Ahmedabad court Tuesday issued summonses to respondents in the criminal defamation case filed by BJP chief Amit Shah’s son against news portal ‘The Wire’ over a report that claimed the turnover of his firm grew exponentially after the party came to power in 2014.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S K Gadhvi issued summonses to journalist Rohini Singh, five editors and the non-profit company that publishes The Wire. The summonses are returnable by November 13.

The metropolitan court issued summonses after it prima facie found that a case of defamation punishable with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both under section 500 of IPC was made out against all the seven respondents.

The order was issued after considering the depositions of three witnesses, including Jay Amit Shah, as well as documentary evidences produced by his lawyer S V Raju.

Making his submissions today, Raju said, “The article was not published in good faith and was aimed at tarnishing the reputation of his client”.

Before issuing summonses, the court conducted an inquiry into the complaint under CrPC section 202 to ascertain whether there was sufficient ground for proceeding against the respondents.

In his application, Shah prayed for criminal action against the respondents for “defaming and tarnishing” his reputation by publishing an article, which was “scandalous, frivolous, misleading, derogatory, libelous and consisting of several defamatory statements.”

The seven respondents in the case are the author of the article Rohini Singh, founding editors of the news portal Siddarth Varadarajan, Sidharth Bhatia and M K Venu, managing editor Monobina Gupta, public editor Pamela Philipose and the Foundation for Independent Journalism, the non-profit company that publishes ‘The Wire’.

The case has been filed under IPC sections 500 (defamation), 109 (abetment), 39 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy).

Two businessmen- Jaimin Shah and Rajiv Shah- who appeared as witnesses, said they had received the article through WhatsApp and informed Jay Shah about it after realising that it “hurt” his reputation.

Appearing as a witness, Jay Shah also told the court that his friends and well-wishers told him that the article dented his reputation.

His lawyer Raju submitted before the court that the purpose of the article was not to give a bonafide account of the company or his client but to defame him keeping the state Assembly elections in mind.

He said there was “something fishy about the article” as it was “published hurriedly to make it an issue for the elections”.

In his complaint, Shah said that the accused conspired to get a “fabricated, reworded, and edited version of the defamatory article to be published in place of the original version.”

Raju told the court that Shah was given “unreasonable” time to respond to a questionnaire and claimed no further inquiry based on the response was made.

The complainant said a “predetermined conspiracy” was hatched to defame him.

The Wire had claimed in its report that Temple Enterprise Pvt. Ltd., the company owned by Jay Shah, saw a huge rise in its turnover after the BJP came to power at the Centre in 2014. It said the turnover grew from a measly Rs 50,000 to over Rs 80 crore in a single year.

A political storm erupted after the article titled ‘Golden touch of Jay Amit Shah’ was published. The Congress demanded sacking of Amit Shah as BJP chief and institution of a judicial inquiry into the entire episode, while the BJP called the article defamatory.
