Gauri murder: SIT extracts picture of bike-borne man on recce before incident

October 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A special investigation team (SIT) probing the killing of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh outside her house in Bengaluru has extracted an enlarged picture of a motorcycle-borne youth, who is suspected to have conducted a recce of the area before the incident.

A police officer, who is part of the team, confirmed that the picture had been extracted from one of the two video clips they had obtained from a CCTV camera.

Police took the assistance of a forensic science laboratory abroad to stretch the picture.

The face of the suspect was not clear because he was wearing a helmet, the officer said.

The SIT has already released three sketches of two suspects, made based on eyewitness accounts.

Gauri Lankesh, known for her strong anti-right wing stand, was shot dead on September 5 evening outside her residence in Bengaluru.

The incident had triggered widespread outrage, leading to protest rallies across the country.

The Karnataka government has formed a 21-member SIT, led by Inspector General of Police B K Singh, to investigate the case.

Girl dies at Patna AIIMS for lack of treatment, RJD demands probe

October 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Patna: As a 9-year-old girl died at Patna AIIMS while her poor father completed the formalities for her treatment and an official posted at the counter refused to help him, the opposition RJD on Wednesday demanded a high-level probe into the matter.

Raushan Kumari, suffering from high fever for six days, died near the Outdoor Patient Department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Tuesday.

Her father Rambalak and his wife, residents of Kajra village in Lakhisarai district, brought her to AIIMS, following which he was directed by the staff to get a ‘parcha’ (registration card) made at the OPD counter.

As Rambalak, a daily wager, stood in the queue at the counter, his wife told him the girl’s condition had deteriorated. As Rambalak pleaded with people standing in a long queue to allow him to get the formalities completed out of turn, no one paid heed. He even pleaded with the clerk deployed at the counter, but was asked to come in queue.

“By the time Rambalak left the counter after getting the registration done, his daughter had died,” a staff of a private agency contracted for cleaning operations at the hospital said on condition of anonymity.

To add to his agony, the distraught man was allegedly not even provided an ambulance by AIIMS officials to ferry the body to his village. With little money on his person, he carried his daughter’s body on his shoulder for nearly four km to an auto-rickshaw stand at Phulwari Sharif here.

AIIMS Director Dr Prabhat Kumar Singh said he had no information that a critical patient had died due to lack of treatment.

“As far as a ‘parcha’ is concerned, doctors treat critical patients without it and later their registration is done. But I will inquire into this case if it has happened,” he said.

Interestingly, Patna AIIMS does not have an Emergency Ward.

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad flayed the Nitish Kumar government for its “apathy towards the poorest of the poor” which, he claimed, led to the girl’s death, and demanded a high-level probe.

“Everything has collapsed in Bihar, including law and order, education, and health. The latest incident of the girl’s death at Patna AIIMS vindicates our stand. There is no facility for the poor for treatment — they have been left to die, as happened in this case.”

He also took a dig at Union Minister of State for Health Ashwani Kumar Choubey, who last week reportedly suggested that patients from Bihar should be treated at Patna’s AIIMS and not in AIIMS at Delhi.

Choubey’s alleged remark about Biharis “crowding” AIIMS at Delhi even for minor ailments had drawn criticism from opposition parties.

Lalu Prasad said: “Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi have no time for genuine health issues. Both are busy showing their faces in the media, more or less on the lines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

“Girls are dying for want of ‘bhat'(rice) in Jharkhand and lack of treatment in Bihar,” the RJD chief remarked while referring to the death of 11-year-old Santoshi Kumari in Simdega district in neighbouring Jharkhand due to starvation.

George Saunders Wins the 2017 Man Booker Prize for Fiction

October 18, 2017 by Nasheman

London: The “unique” and “extraordinary” novel, “Lincoln in the Bardo,” by noted American short story writer George Saunders that tells the story of Abraham Lincoln’s grief after the death of his young son has been declared as the winner of 2017 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

Saunders’ win was announced by Lola Baroness Young, the chair of the judging committee, at a dinner at London’s Guildhall late on Tuesday night. He was presented with a trophy by the Duchess of Cornwall and a 50,000 pounds cheque by Luke Ellis, Chief Executive of the Man Group. Saunders also received a designer-bound edition of his book and a further 2,500 pounds for being shortlisted.

“The form and style of this utterly original novel reveals a witty, intelligent and deeply moving narrative. This tale of the haunting and haunted souls in the afterlife of Abraham Lincoln’s young son paradoxically creates a vivid and lively evocation of the characters that populate this other world. Lincoln in the Bardo is both rooted in, and plays with history, and explores the meaning and experience of empathy,” commented Young.

Her fellow judges this year were writer and critic Lila Azam Zanganeh, novelist and poet Sarah Hall, artist and author Tom Phillips and travel writer and novelist Colin Thubron.

Saunders thanked his wife, Paula, referring to her as his “precious friend and artistic hero” for supporting him to achieve the “wonderful honour”.

“If you haven’t noticed, we live in a strange time. So the question at the heart of the matter is pretty simple: Do we respond to fear with exclusion and negative projection and violence? Or do we take that ancient great leap of faith and do our best to respond with love? And with faith in the idea that what seems other is actually not other at all, but just us on a different day.

“In the US we’re hearing a lot about the need to protect culture. Well this tonight is culture, it is international culture, it is compassionate culture, it is activist culture. It is a room full of believers in the word, in beauty and ambiguity and in trying to see the other person’s point of view, even when that is hard,” Saunders said on receiving the prize.

The 58-year-old New York resident, born in Texas, is only the second American author to win the prize in its 49-year history. He was in contention for the prize with two British, one British-Pakistani and two American writers.

The novel is published by Bloomsbury, making it the third consecutive year the prize has been won by an independent publisher, following Oneworld Publications’ success in 2015 with Marlon James and 2016 with Paul Beatty. Bloomsbury has won the prize thrice before, with Howard Jacobson (2010), Margaret Atwood (2000) and Michael Ondaatje (1992).

The widely-read novel, which has now thrust Saunders into the limelight, focuses on a single night in the life of Abraham Lincoln: an actual moment in 1862 when the body of his 11-year-old son was laid to rest in a Washington cemetery. Strangely and brilliantly, Saunders activates this graveyard with the spirits of its dead.

The judges considered 144 submissions for this year’s prize. The books losing out on the prize were “4321” by Paul Auster (US), “Elmet” by Fiona Mozley (UK), “Exit West” by Mohsin Hamid (UK-Pakistan), “History of Wolves” by Emily Fridlund (US) and “Autumn” by Ali Smith (UK).

Modi should accept note ban was wrong move: Kamal Hassan

October 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Chennai: Apologizing for supporting demonetisation, actor Kamal Hassan said he will again salute Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he also accepts that the note ban was a mistake.

In an article in the Tamil magazine Anandavikatan, the actor said accepting and correcting mistakes is a marker for great leaders which Mahatma Gandhi was able to do.

Hassan said Modi should not be stubborn in arguing that the rabbit he had caught has three legs.

On his initial support for the demonetisation of 1,000 and 500 rupee notes, Hassan said he had welcomed the move and tweeted that it should be supported regardless of party affiliation.

“I thought people should bear with minor irritants in the goal to eradicate black money,” he wrote.

The actor said his friends and those who know economics had called him and criticised his support for demonetisation.

Hassan said he later thought that demonetisation was good but the manner in which it was implemented was wrong.

He said now there were voices saying demonetisation was a deception and the weak response from the government raises serious doubts about the scheme.

Journalist who reported on Panama Papers killed in bomb blast

October 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Valletta: A journalist who led the Panama Papers probe into corruption in Malta was killed on Monday in a car bomb near her residence, the media reported.

Daphne Caruana Galizia died on Monday when her car, a Peugeot 108, was destroyed by a powerful explosive device, reports the Guardian.

A blogger whose posts often attracted more readers than the combined circulation of the country’s newspapers, Caruana Galizia was recently described by the American news outlet Politico as a “one-woman WikiLeaks”.

Her latest revelations accused Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and two of his closest aides, connecting offshore companies linked to the three men with the sale of Maltese passports and payments from the government of Azerbaijan.

No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attack, the Guardian reported.

Malta’s President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, called for calm. “In these moments, when the country is shocked by such a vicious attack, I call on everyone to measure their words, to not pass judgement and to show solidarity.”

In a statement, Muscat condemned the “barbaric attack”.

“Everyone knows Caruana Galizia was a harsh critic of mine,” said Muscat, adding “Both politically and personally, but nobody can justify this barbaric act in any way.”

He announced in parliament later on Monday that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officers were on their way to Malta to assist with the investigation, following his request for help from the US government.

According to local media reports, Caruana Galizia filed a police report 15 days ago to say that she had been receiving death threats.

The journalist posted her final blog on her Running Commentary website at 2.35 p.m. on Monday, and the explosion, which occurred near her home, was reported to police just after 3 p.m.

Over the last two years, her reporting had largely focused on revelations from the Panama Papers, a cache of 11.5 million documents leaked from the internal database of the world’s fourth largest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca.

October 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Chill maadi! Namma Porter now speaks Kannada. Porter, India’s leading app-enabled intra-city logistics player, will now speak in your language as the company celebrates the festival season with new add-ons and attractive offers for drivers on the platform.

Porter’s new Kannada interface is a tech solution to a frequent problem associated with local logistics— language barrier. Porter’s language feature will help the team of drivers to operate in the language they are comfortable with, which means smoother trips and faster delivery for you.

“If you are new to Bangalore, navigating on and off the road can be tough. Besides the traffic, you have to navigate the language barrier too. Our driver partners also need to navigate the language besides the traffic. Porter helps you with both,” said Mr Pranav Goel, the co-founder of Porter.

“Most of the partners on our platform are comfortable using Kannada and the app will act as a bridge to users, ensuring smoother work flow and faster delivery,” said Mr Goel.

Rolling out the local language interface simultaneously in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai, the multilingual function of the app will ensure easy communication between the partner driver and customer, leading to a better understanding of the requirement and delivery.

Keeping up with the festive spirit, Porter had also rolled out special schemes for the driver partners earlier last month to better their profit margins. Driver partners who login for 250 hours during the period September 7 to October 17 were entitled to festival incentives which ranged from 45k to 55k depending on the city. The objective was to promote better work-life balance as well as to help the driver community maximise their profits during the festive season.

Pranav further added, “Porter is constantly striving to create opportunities that benefit our driver partners. We want to empower more individuals and create an ecosystem that will help create new business owners”.

About Porter:
Founded in 2014 by IIT alumni Pranav Goel, Uttam Digga and Vikas Chaudhary, the company aims to provide economical, efficient and reliable logistics solutions to its customers, while empowering partnered drivers, by utilising technology.
