Kerala High Court grants bail to actor Dileep

October 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Kochi: Malayalam superstar Dileep, arrested for alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the kidnapping of an actress, was on Tuesday granted bail by the Kerala High Court.

The bail conditions include surrendering his passport, furnishing a bond of Rs 1 lakh and a pledge to stay away from witnesses in the case.

This is the third time Dileep had approached the High Court for bail. He had also sought bail earlier twice from the trial court.

Dileep was arrested on July 10. The bail comes at a time when the police are set to file a chargesheet.

The arguments on the bail plea got over on Friday.

As news spread that the actor has got bail, his fans started reaching in large numbers the Aluva sub-jail near here where he has been lodged since his arrest.

Actor Mahesh, who had been defending Dileep all through, expressed happiness.

“Every time a bail plea was moved, we hoped against hope that he would get bail. Finally, the prayers of his fans have been answered,” he said.

The abduction took place in February when the actress was on her way from Thrissur to Kochi.

She was taken around in her vehicle forcefully for about two hours before being dumped near an actor-director’s home.

The key accused — Pulsar Suni and his accomplices involved in the actual abduction — were arrested a week later. After detailed questioning, police unearthed a conspiracy angle in the abduction and arrested Dileep.

India thrash Australia in 5th ODI, end series on winning note

October 2, 2017 by Nasheman

Nagpur: Rohit Sharma struck a century as India beat Australia by seven wickets in the fifth and final One-Day International (ODI) at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground here on Sunday to end the series on a winning note.

India thus won the series 4-1. The victory also helped India regain the top spot in the ODI rankings, pushing South Africa to the second spot. Australia remain third.

Chasing a modest target of 243 runs, India crossed the line with 43 balls still remaining.

Sharma and fellow opener Ajinkya Rahane put on a 124-run partnership in 22.3 overs which virtually sealed the match in India’s favour.

Sharma plundered 125 runs off 109 balls with his innings featuring 11 boundaries and five hits over the fence. This was his 14th century in the 50-over format.

Sharma became the fastest Indian to reach the 2,000-run milestone in ODI cricket at home. He surpassed former India captain Sourav Ganguly and present incumbent Virat Kohli to the top spot.

The right-hander from Mumbai achieved the feat in 42 innings while Ganguly took 45 and Kohli needed 46.

Rahane, who has also been in good form in this series, played a steady knock of 61 runs off 74 balls which included seven boundaries.

Fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile finally broke the partnership when he trapped Rahane leg-before.

Kohli then joined Sharma in the middle and the duo proceeded to take the hosts slowly but surely towards victory, adding 99 runs between them off 16.4 overs.

Sharma brought up his century in style, smashing Coulter-Nile for a six over mid-wicket.

He continued to torment the Australian bowlers before falling to leg-spinner Adam Zampa while trying to go over the top.

Kohli, who was cruising along with 39 runs off 55 deliveries, fell just three balls later when a mistimed drive into the hands of Marcus Stoinis at long off handed Zampa his second wicket of the match.

Kedar Jadhav and Manish Pandey then took India past the post, the latter hitting Australian pacer James Faulkner for two consecutive boundaries to bring up the victory in style.

Earlier, the Indian bowlers put in a disciplined performance to restrict the visitors to 242/9.

In-form opener David Warner was the highest scorer for Australia with 53 runs off 62 balls. It was the left-hander’s 17th fifty in ODI cricket.

After Australian skipper Steven Smith won the toss and elected to bat, Warner and fellow opener Aaron Finch (32) laid a solid foundation of 66 runs but the following top-order batsmen failed to sustain the momentum.

However, Travis Head (42) and Marcus Stoinis (46) put up an 87-run fifth-wicket stand to haul Australia to a respectable total though it may not be enough to stop India from winning the series 4-1.

For India, left-arm spinner Axar Patel was impressive, claiming three wickets for 38 runs in 10 overs.

Warner and Finch started strongly, putting the Indian opening bowlers under pressure. Both of them played calculated knocks as the partnership flourished.

Medium-pacer Hardik Pandya broke the dangerous-looking partnership as Finch was caught by Jasprit Bumrah at mid-off on the third ball of the 12th over, with Australia at 66/1.

Smith (16) joined Warner in the middle. But the partnership lasted for only 34 runs after Smith, attempting a sweep shot, missed a quick delivery from part-time off-spinner Kedar Jadhav and the bowler appealed successful for a LBW.

Australia’s slide continued and Patel delivered a big blow by removing Warner, who offered a straight catch to Pandey at long on.

Two overs later, the Gujarat spinner bagged his second wicket in the form of Peter Handscomb (13).

Travis Head (42) and Marcus Stoinis (46) then hauled Australia out of the rot with an 87-run fifth-wicket stand. Both of them took time to settle down and it meant that the spinners ran through their overs with less pressure.

But Patel claimed his third victim to break the stand when Head was bowled as he missed the line and length of the ball trying to sweep it in the sixth delivery of the 43rd over.

Two overs later, Stoinis perished too, with Bumrah getting an LBW decision. These two wickets allowed India to contain Australia even in the death overs.

Matthew Wade (20) and James Faulkner (12) then did their best to take Australia to 242/9.

At least 50 people have been killed and more than 400 injured after at least one gunman opened fire on concert-goers on the popular Las Vegas Strip in the US state of Nevada.

The mass shooting took place late on Sunday outside a building at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino during the Route 91 country festival. More than 22.000 people were in attendance at the concert.

According to the Las Vegas police, the shooter fired into the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel.

The suspected attacker was later found dead in his hotel room, a police statement said.

Cole Watson, who was at the concert with his wife and kids, said: “At first it sounded like someone was setting off a whole lot of fire crackers”.

He said when they “realised it was gunfire and everybody started running”.

“The scene was insane – it was absolute chaos,” Watson told Al Jazeera by telephone.

Wade Millward, a journalist with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, told Al Jazeera that the attack took place while country-music star Jason Aldean was performing.

“Witnesses told me they heard a sound like fireworks going off,” he said.

“Aldean played on for about thirty seconds before it dawned on everyone that this was not fireworks. Then people hit the ground and people ran.”

Watson said he saw several injured people when he and his family ran from the scene of the attack.

Another witness, Felipe Uribe, was watching the concert from the top floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel when he saw the attack take place.

“We were looking at the concert down below when we saw what appeared to be fireworks”, Uribe told Al Jazeera. “It wasn’t until later on that we realised it was actual gunshots.”

He said that people were running all over the place and “they were laying on the floor on their backs or their stomachs”.

“We didn’t know at that time the shots were coming from the hotel.”

Police later took Uribe and others he was with to a secure location where they had to wait for the situation to be cleared.

Videos posted on social media show the crowd ducking for cover as multiple shots can be heard.

“We are on lockdown now and police is going door to door checking on people,” he said.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Millward told Al Jazeera the lobby of one of the hospitals where victims were taken was packed with friends and family.

“I’ve seen people wearing bloody clothing and there is discarded bloody clothing outside.”

“There are still people walking by with blood on their shirts. There is police everywhere and there are two helicopters flying overhead.”

During a press conference, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said that at least 50 people had been killed and more 400 were injured, but added that the precise number of victims could not be given.

Two on-duty police officers were shot, one of them is still in critical condition, Lombardo said.

He also said the suspected shooter, an unnamed Las Vegas resident, was killed in a shootout with police in the hotel room where he was shot.

Lombardo added that police are still looking for a possible accomplice, who is wanted for questioning.

US President Donald Trump tweeted his “warmest condolences” to the victims of the “terrible Las Vegas shooting”.

Sunday’s attack is the deadliest mass shooting in the US since 1949.

So far in 2017, the watchdog group Gun Violence Archive has documented 273 mass shootings in the US.

The group also recorded 11,621 gun-related deaths and 23,433 firearm-related injuries during that period.

The Mandalay Bay attack comes just weeks after Spencer Hight carried out a mass shooting during a gathering at his estranged wife’s home in Plano, Texas. The assailant killed eight people and was later shot dead by police.

Adani’s $3.5bn debt-funded ‘investment’ in Australia at risk: Report

October 2, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Adani Group’s entire A$3.5 billion (Rs 178 billion) debt-funded ‘investment’ in Australia is gravely at risk, the US-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) said on Monday.

In a new report it details how Adani’s Abbot Point Coal Terminal has excessive financial leverage, negative shareholders equity and runs the risk of becoming a stranded asset if Adani’s Carmichael mine does not get a $1 billion Australian subsidy.

The Abbot Point Coal Terminal is due for a $1.5 billion debt refinancing next year and a cumulative debt refinancing of $2.11 billion by 2020.

Currently, operating at just over 50 per cent capacity, the Abbot Point Coal Terminal needs the Carmichael mine to fill the gap created as its current take-or-pay contracts progressively expire.

“Securing this refinancing is going to be a real challenge, not the least because the port value has been tied to the success of the Carmichael coal mine proposal which is itself yet to secure funding and which the ‘big four’ Australian banks have refused to touch,” an official statement quoting report co-author Tim Buckley said.

Buckley’s the IEEFA’s Director of Energy Finance Studies, Australasia.

“The potential for a loss of up to $1.5bn on any decision to walk away from Carmichael mine and rail proposal, explains why the Adani Group has been so focused on securing Australian tax payers money and royalty holidays to subsidise his loss making ventures,” he said.

“To the extent able to be analysed from Australian Securities and Investments Commission records, Adani’s entire mine, rail and port operation in Australia looks to be 100 per cent debt financed and shareholders funds now tally an unprecedented, negative $458 million combined. The value at stake for the Adani Group’s Carmichael mine proposal is far bigger than previously understood,” Buckley added.

Whilst Adani continues to search for overseas project funding, the report, “House of Cards: The Escalating Financial Risk of Adani’s Abbot Point Coal Terminal”, the report traces events that make the Carmichael project an even greater financial risk.

The events include Adani’s major proposed off-take coal customer, Adani Power Ltd’s 4.6 GW power plant at Mundra in Gujarat, is financially distressed and its equity is for sale for just Re 1 but has no buyers so far.

India’s thermal coal imports have continued the downward trend of the last two years and are down 13 per cent year-to-date in 2017 compared to the prior year.

And, in the light of new solar infrastructure projects delivering electricity at prices now 20 per cent below many Indian thermal power plant tariffs, financial analysts don’t see any imported coal demand to justify more expensive seaborne supplies.

Disappointing that PM follows those celebrating Gauri Lankesh’s murder: Prakash Raj

October 2, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence over the murder of senior Kannada editor and activist Gauri Lankesh, popular south Indian actor Prakash Raj said it was “disappointing” to see the PM follow those celebrating Lankesh’s murder on social media.

“Gauri’s killers have not been caught yet. But what is more disappointing is people celebrating her murder over social media spreading hatred,” Raj said on Sunday speaking at the 11th state meet of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) held in Bengaluru.

“Some of these people who celebrated her (Gauri’s) murder are followed by our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) on Twitter. We have a PM who shuts his eyes to this,” he said.

Immediately hitting out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Raj said, “When you look at the kind of statements he (Adityanath) makes, you don’t understand whether he’s a Chief Minister or a priest.”

“He (Adityanath) is a better actor than me. I think I must give out all my five national awards to him,” he said on a sarcastic note.

Clarifying Raj’s statement, Muneer Katipalla, the state president of DYFI told IANS here: “It was only a satirical comment that Prakash Raj made referring to how Adityanath was trying to act like a Chief Minister.”

Raj, however, did not respond to attempts by IANS to contact him to verify if he really plans to return his national awards.

Raj, a popular actor in Kannada, Telugu and Tamil film industries, has won five National Film Awards for his movies.

The 55-year-old editor of Kannada weekly tabloid by her name “Gauri Lankesh Patrike” was gunned down by unidentified men outside her home in the city suburbs on September 5.

The Special Investigation Team set up to probe the murder is yet to nab her killers.

Dalit man lynched for watching garba

October 2, 2017 by Nasheman

REUTERS/Amit Dave

New Delhi: A 21-year-old Dalit was reportedly lynched to death in Gujarat’s Anand district on Sunday by people from the upper-caste Patel community for attending a garba. Eight accused have been arrested, the police have said.

The incident took place around 4 am.

Jayesh Solanki, his cousin Prakash Solanki and two other Dalit men were sitting near a house adjacent to a temple in Bhadrania village when a person made “derogatory remarks about their caste,” the police said, quoting a complaint filed in connection with the incident. The accused said Dalits “do not have any right to watch garba. He made casteist remarks and asked some men to come to the spot,” an officer at the Bhadran police station said. The upper caste men allegedly thrashed the Dalits and banged Jayesh’s head against a wall, the officer said.

Jayesh was rushed to a hospital in Karamsad, where doctors declared him brought dead in the morning.

“We have registered an FIR under IPC sections related to murder and the Prevention of Atrocities Act against eight men,” the official said. Deputy SP (SC/ST cell) A.M. Patel said it did not appear to be a premeditated attack. “”Jayesh was killed in the heat of the moment, as there was no rivalry between him and the accused. We are probing the case from all angles,” Patel added.

According to the Indian Express, the man who started abusing the group of Dalit youth was Sanjay Patel. He was joined by Chintan Patel, Jignesh Patel, Rutvik Patel, Vickey Patel, Dhaval Patel, Ripen Patel and Dipesh Patel, all residents of Bhadraniya village in beating up the Dalits.

The Anand incident comes days after two Dalit men of a village near Gandhinagar were allegedly thrashed, in separate incidents on September 25 and 29, by members of the Rajput community, for sporting a moustache.
