Gauri Lankesh murder case: SIT has facial profile of attacker

September 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Special Investigation Team which was set up to investigate on the murder case of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh now has a facial profile of her attacker.

The SIT, which went through hundreds of digital video recorders (DVRs), developed an image based on the footage from one of the CCTV cameras on the path from her office to a residence. It also scrutinised CCTV camera footage from her house, which the assailant visited twice before the murder on September 5.

A senior police officer from the SIT told “The video frames clearly show the assailant was on a Bajaj Pulsar, wearing a formal shirt and trousera (not black jacket as reported earlier), a white helmet without a visor, a wristband, a watch and office tag around his neck. The officer said the assailant is lean built and aged between 34 to 38 years. The rough facial profile has given the SIT enough leads, it is said.

Gauri Lankesh was murdered on September 5 outside her residence. Journalists across the nation condemned the killing, and remembered a fearless scribe who was often critical of the right-wing.

Rajnath’s statement on Rohingyas ‘disingenuous’, says Owaisi

September 21, 2017 by Nasheman

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday termed as “disingenuous” the statement by Home Minister Rajnath Singh that Rohingyas who have entered India after fleeing Myanmar were not refugees but illegal immigrants who need to be sent back.

Owaisi said a majority of the Rohingyas who are in India have cards issued by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Talking to reporters in Hyderabad, Owaisi said Chakmas had from Bangladesh similarly and they were given Indian citizenship. He claimed that Tamils from Sri Lanka also came to India in a similar manner.

He said that the Supreme Court had ruled that the right to life and the right to equality apply not just to Indian citizens but also to aliens.

Some 40,000 Rohingya Muslims have taken refuge in India.

The Home Ministry on Monday submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court on the deportation of Rohingyas to Myanmar, calling them a “security threat to India”. The court will hear the issue on October 3.

“We need to understand the reality that Rohingyas from Myanmar who have entered India are not refugees. In order to get the refugee status, one needs to follow a certain process. None among them has followed that procedure,” the minister said in his address to the “National Seminar on Good Governance, Development and Human Rights” in New Delhi.

“No Rohingya has sought asylum in India and we cannot question their deportation by raising human rights concerns. Don’t mistake illegal immigrants with refugees. Any sovereign nation will act against illegal immigrants. The issue is also related to our national security,” he said.

“The world knows that Rohnigyas are stateless and disenfranchised people and are deprived of all human rights since 1947. Out of 15 lakh Rohngiyas who live in Myanmar, hardly 3,000 to 4,000 may be having documents,” Owaisi said.

He said Rohingyas who had taken refuge in Bangladesh had gone back in 1977 and 1997 under UN monitoring but were forced to flee again by the Myanmar government.

Australia restrict India to 252 all out in second ODI

September 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Kolkata: Despite half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, India was restricted to 252 all out in 50 overs in the second ODI against Australia.

Kohli scored 92 runs, while Rahane made 55 off 64 balls. The duo scored 102 runs for the second wicket after India won the toss and opted to bat. Kane Richardson, playing his first ODI since February 2016, took 3-55. Nathan Coulter-Nile also returned 3-51.

India lost Rohit Sharma (7) quickly, caught off a simple return catch by Coulter-Nile in the sixth over. Kohli and Rahane then came together and steered the Indian innings, scoring 50 runs off 51 balls.

The score crossed 100 in the 20th over. Kohli overcame his patchy start and reached his 45th ODI half-century off 60 balls. Soon after, Rahane reached his 20th ODI half-century off 62 balls.

Their 100 partnership came off 113 balls, but was then broken against the run of play. Kohli forced Rahane for a second run in the 24th over, and the latter was run out, unable to beat Hilton Cartwright’s throw from long on. It became a double blow as Ashton Agar (1-54) bowled Manish Pandey (3) cheaply four overs later.

Kedar Jadhav (24) then joined Kohli in the middle and put on 55 runs for the fourth wicket. India was slacking a bit in the middle overs as Australia exerted great control over the run-rate.

Jadhav then got out trying to force the pace, caught at backward point off Coulter-Nile in the 36th over. There was another double blow when MS Dhoni (5), playing in his 300th ODI for India, was caught.

It was only the fifth time in ODI cricket that Kohli had got out in the nervous 90s. The last occasion was in Perth in January 2016 when he scored 91 against Australia.

India crossed 200 in the 38th over, but the big blow came just prior. Kohli played on off Coulter-Nile and was bowled eight short of yet another ODI hundred. Overall, he faced 107 balls and hit eight fours.

Hardik Pandya (20) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (20) added 33 runs before a 15-minute rain break prior to the end of the innings.

There was some debate about the players walking off for rain, as Pandya was caught off a no ball in the 48th over just as the covers came on. Australia then affected a run-out as the batsman walked back to the dressing room without grounding his bat, but the umpires ruled in Pandya’s favor.

On resumption, Kumar was out caught after Smith dropped a skier. India lost two wickets in three balls as Kuldeep Yadav (0) was caught behind off Richardson in the penultimate over.

Pandya’s anticipated flourish never came, and he was caught at long on in the final over for Richardson’s third wicket. India finished with a below-par score losing its last four wickets for 13 runs.

Dawood in ‘setting’ with Modi government to return to India: Raj Thackeray

September 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Fugitive mafia don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar wants to return to India and is currently negotiating a settlement with the BJP-led government at the centre, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray said here on Thursday.

Making the sensational claim, Thackeray said that Dawood is now very sick and crippled, he is very keen to return to India and breathe his last in his motherland.

“He is currently engaged in a ‘setting’ with the government for this and this could happen,” Thackeray said at a huge gathering to launch his official Facebook Page.

However, he alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will exploit it politically by claiming that it managed to bring the absconder don to India.

“It is he (Dawood) who is keen to return… But, the BJP will claim credit for this to win the next elections,” Thackeray predicted.

Tax raids on Cafe Coffee Day chain owner in Karnataka

September 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Income Tax Department sleuths on Thursday searched the business and residential premises of Cafe Coffee Day retail chain founder-owner V.G. Siddhartha, son-in-law of former Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna, in Bengaluru and other places in the state for alleged tax evasion, said a senior official.

“Directorate Revenue (Intelligence) officials are conducting simultaneous search and seizure operation to ascertain undisclosed income and tax evasion, if any, under section 132 of the Income Tax Act 1961 in the offices and residence of a businessman who owns Coffee Day retail outlets across the country,” the tax official told IANS here.

The raids, which began at 8 a.m., were underway at the corporate office of Amalgamated Bean Coffee (ABC) Trading Company, which runs the coffee chain, in central Bengaluru, its branches at Chikkamagaluru, Mudigere and Sakelespur in the state and its owner’s house in the city’s upscale suburb.

Clarifying that the raids had nothing to do with the political links of the owner’s relative, the official said the businessman happens to be the son-in-law of a prominent politician in the state.

“The raid on the businessman is for evidence on information gathered during the course of investigation and is independent of his relationship with a politician,” added the official on the condition of anonymity.

Siddhartha is the elder son-in-law of Krishna, a former External Affairs Minister of the country from 2009-12. He was the Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004. He was also Maharashtra Governor from 2004 to 2008.

The 85-year-old veteran politician joined the BJP on March 22 in New Delhi after resigning from the Congress on January 29 this year, severing his four-decade-old association with the grand old party.

Maharashtra Ex-CM Narayan Rane, son Nilesh quit Congress

September 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Sindhudurg: The Maharashtra Congress received a strong jolt when senior leader and former Chief Minister Narayan Rane and his son Nilesh, an ex-MP, quit the party here on Thursday.

“I have sent my resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. I was promised the post of CM four times, but it was not honoured by the party,” Rane told a jam-packed media conference here in the afternoon. He also quit as Member of Legislative Council.

He claimed he was “used and exploited” by the Congress for the past 12 years to secure the support of his loyalist legislators and party activists.

Amidst speculation that he is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rane said he would go on a tour of Maharashtra before announcing the next course of action and criticized state Congress President Ashok Chavan.

“I shall prove my strength to Ashok Chavan. Many more Congress leaders shall follow suit. My son Nilesh and I have now become ‘Congress-mukt’ and have nothing to do with the party,” declared Rane.

Rane was the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance Chief Minister for a year (in 1999) when it ruled the state between 1995 and 1999.

In recent months, Rane has met BJP President Amit Shah and even Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on a couple of occasions in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, sparking off rumours of his imminent exit from the Congress.

Though the BJP fuelled the speculation by announcing it would welcome Rane with open arms, Rane had dismissed them as mere rumours.

Earthquake kills more than 200 in central Mexico

September 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Rescue workers race to find survivors after deadliest tremor in 32 years kills 217 in central Mexico.

Dozens of buildings collapsed across central Mexico during the earthquake [Ali Rae/Al Jazeera]

by Elizabeth Melimopoulos & Ali Rae, Al Jazeera

Mexico City, Mexico – Fabiola Luna Rios was in her house in the southern part of this city when Tuesday’s earthquake struck.

“This was a horrible experience,” the 47-year-old told Al Jazeera as she sat with her husband, Jesus Alberto, on Obregon Avenue on Tuesday night.

“I really felt panic,” she said. “I went out to the street, but when I saw my house, I saw it moving left to right.”

Alberto, who was in Mexico state at the time, added that he thought “the ground was opening up”.

“I felt houses were falling and for two seconds, I thought we would die,” he told Al Jazeera.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake, which struck shortly after 1:00pm local time (18:00 GMT), caused dozens of buildings to collapse and sent residents fleeing to the streets.

By midnight, at least 200 people had been killed across central Mexico, including more than 20 children who died after their school building collapsed.

Officials said the the death toll was expected to rise.

Luis Felipe Puente, the director of the government’s civil protection service, tweeted that the death toll was at 248 just after midnight on Wednesday.

Later on however, he lowered the number to 217, giving no explanation for the lower toll.

At least 86 deaths were reported in Mexico City and its surrounding areas. In the state of Morelos, directly south of the capital, 71 people were killed.

Another 43 people were reported dead in the state of Puebla, about 122km from Mexico City and the location of the earthquake’s epicentre.

In Mexico state, he said 12 people were killed, while four died in the state of Guerrero. One person was killed in Oaxaca state.

Scenes of chaos and destruction were seen across Mexico City, as rescue workers and others raced to find and help survivors still trapped under collapsed buildings.

It was the second earthquake to strike Mexico in less than two weeks. The first tremor – a powerful 8.1-magnitude earthquake – hit southern Mexico on September 7, killing at least 98 people and destroying and damaging thousands of homes.

‘This was way stronger’

For those who were alive in 1985, Tuesday’s quake brought back familiar feelings experienced during the devastating earthquake that killed some 10,000 people exactly 32 years ago.

“This is not the first time I’ve felt something like this,” Luis Alvarado, 39, told Al Jazeera from the neighbourhood of La Condesa in Mexico City.

“I witnessed the one in 1985 and the feeling wasn’t very different,” he said.

Maria Irene Pies, who lives in the La Roma neighbourhood, agreed, but said she felt Tuesday’s quake was much stronger.

“I was here during the 1985 earthquake, but I felt this was way stronger,” the 73-year-old told Al Jazeera.

“I was in my house when the earthquake started and it was really strong,” she said.

“Mirrors started falling, the furniture started moving.”

Pies, who lives near a medical laboratory, has been told to stay away due to fears that chemicals may have spilled during the tremor.

Like many others in Mexico City, she has moved to the streets over worries of aftershocks.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who said on Twitter that he had been flying to Oaxaca went the tremor struck, returned to Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon where he called an emergency meeting.

In a tweet, he warned Mexicans to “review the damage, disconnect the lights and turn off gas” before returning to their homes.

He also visted the site of the collapsed school where the pupils were killed. Thirty-eight remained missing.

Officials gave out the numbers of shelters and hostels for those needing a place to stay.

‘We are united’

Fernando Irando, who also lives in Mexico City, said that while he is used to earthquakes, “this [one] went above and beyond” any he has felt before.

“I think the city resisted it and I think there will be aftershocks and I hope we will be able to resist it,” the 61-year-old told Al Jazeera.

Just after nightfall, rescue workers and residents continued to search for those who were trapped under rubble.

In the neighbourhood of La Roma, residents desperately called for help, asking friends and family to bring medicine, food, water, lamps and batteries to help rescue workers and those still trapped under collapsed buildings.

“There are people trapped among the rubble and we are trying to give all the support,” Ana Marina Orenday Porras told Al Jazeera.

“Colonia Roma [Street] is devastated,” she said, referring to one of the main avenues of Mexico City.

“As we walked around, we realised that many buildings have fallen and many are about to fall, and we are trying to give all the support we can, as citizens, because authorities can’t cope with the size of the disaster.”

Back on Obregon Avenue, Rios and Alberto, said that unlike in 1985, they felt people were better equipped to react to a tremor this size.

“This time, I feel that people were more helpful [than in 1985],” Rios said.

Alberto agreed, adding “after all, we are all Mexicans and we are always united”.

Sindhu, Saina, Srikanth, Prannoy advance at Japan Open

September 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Tokyo: Olympic badminton medallists P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, H.S. Prannoy and the mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponappa advanced to the second round of Japan Open Superseries here on Wednesday.

Sindhu battled past Japanese Minatsu Mitani 12-21, 21-15, 21-17 in an hour and three minutes to set-up a second-round clash against reigning world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Thursday.

Olympic medallists Sindhu and Okuhara share four wins apiece in career meetings and have recently developed an enthralling rivalry. While Okuhara got the better of Sindhu at the World Championships final in August in Glasgow, the Hyderabadi hit back at the Korea Open in Seoul last weekend.

Another intriguing duel on Thursday will be between London Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal and 2016 Olympic champion Carolina Marin of Spain. Saina leads the head-to-head record against the Spaniard by 4-3.

Saina on Wednesday moved past Thai Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-17, 21-9 in 40 minutes, while two-time world champion Marin breezed past Chinese Chen Xiaoxin 21-11, 21-11.

Eighth-seed Srikanth fought off China’s Tian Houwei 21-15, 12-21, 21-11 in an hour and four minutes. After this win, Srikanth, India’s best bet in the men’s singles category, will take on Chinese Hu Yun.

Prannoy got the better of Denmark’s Anders Antonsen 21-12, 21-14 in 37 minutes. The Indian will face Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Jen Hao for a place in the quarter-finals.

Sameer Verma also moved into the second round as he registered a 21-12 21-19 victory over Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab. Sameer will meet Shi Yuqi of Japan on Thursday.

B. Sai Praneeth and Sourabh Verma, however, had to face defeats in the opening round. While Sourabh lost to five-time world champion Lin Dan of China 21-11, 15-21, 13-21, Praneeth went down 23-21, 17-21, 14-21 to South Korean Lee Dong Keun.

Meanwhile, young Satwik had a mixed day as he lost in the men’s doubles and advanced in the mixed doubles.

Satwik-Ashwini pair staved off Thailand’s Tinn Isriyanet and Pacharapun Chochuwong with a 21-17, 21-13 victory. The unseeded Indians will face a huge task of defeating Indonesian fourth seeds Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto on Thursday.

Satwik then partnered Chirag Shetty to lose to Indonesian third seed Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 25-27, 15-21 in 38 minutes.

Ashwini too lost in her doubles category. She and N. Sikki Reddy ran into South Korean third seeds Chang Ye Na and Lee So Hee and the latter prevailed 21-17, 21-12 in 39 minutes.

The senior Indian pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy also fell in the first round. The Indians lost to Chinese Taipei’s eighth seeds Lee Jhe-Huei and Lee Yang 18-21, 15-21 in 31 minutes.

‘Dera folllowers scattered ashes of kin in sect headquarters’

September 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Chandigarh: Around 300-400 followers of Dera Sacha Sauda had over the years scattered ashes of their relatives after their cremation inside the sect headquarters as part of “rituals”, a senior Dera functionary has told a Special Investigation Team of Haryana Police.

On media reports suggesting skeletons used to be buried in Dera premises, the Sirsa SIT headed by Dabwali DSP Kuldeep Singh Beniwal said, “No such fact has come to our notice”. A Special Investigation Team of Haryana Police yesterday evening questioned Dera Sacha Sauda Management Committee senior vice president P R Nain for two-and-a-half hours at Sirsa.

“Being a senior functionary, Nain was quizzed about various issues relating to the Dera. He was also asked about people who had gathered in Panchkula and Sirsa (ahead of Dera chief’s conviction). “Nain was also in-charge of the agriculture wing of the Dera. He placed facts on record stating that some followers used to bring human ashes and scatter these in Dera premises as part of rituals,” the DSP told PTI over phone.

“He placed on record that 300-400 followers had put ashes of their kin in the premises over past many years. The Dera maintained addresses and other contact details of such people, which Nain showed us,” he said. He said Nain had been quizzed at length and if the need is felt, he will again be called for questioning.

The SIT had earlier this week questioned Dera chairperson Vipassana Insan in connection with several issues including whereabouts of Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s adopted daughter Honeypreet, violence that had broken out in Panchkula and Sirsa following the sect head’s rape conviction.

“If the need is felt, we will again call her for questioning,” Beniwal said. Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping two disciples. He is lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak. Violence erupted in Panchkula and Sirsa in Haryana on August 25 following the conviction of Ram Rahim.

The mayhem left 35 dead in Panchkula and six in Sirsa.

Fortis Hospitals bring in new technology to monitor patients remotely

September 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Bangalore: Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore has partnered with Stasis, a global cloud-connected patient monitoring company, with an objective to provide the best care for high-risk patients who require round the clock monitoring outside ICU. Stasis builds cloud-connected vitals monitoring solutions for vulnerable patients who require close observation without one-to-one nursing care. Together, Fortis and Stasis are committed to ensure care extends well past the ICU.

Dr. Manish Mattoo, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospitals Bangalore said, “We are always looking to adopt new technologies and facilities in the hospital that can improve clinical outcomes and hence a cloud-based technology for patient monitoring is a big step towards digitalizing healthcare systems. Stasis is the latest technology being used by Fortis Hospitals Bangalore, that helps round the clock care and treatment to the patients with extra precision. It will help us in upgrading the patient monitoring, care and keep doctors clued into their patients’ vital parameters at all times. It will also help reduce costs as several patients can now be closely monitored outside ICU settings without compromising on care and supervision. This partnership is a good example of good medicine meeting great technology to bring down healthcare costs.”

The Stasis System keeps a watch on a patient’s core vitals such as heart rate, blood oxygen, respiratory rate, blood pressure, temperature, and even the electrocardiogram of vulnerable patients no matter where they are in the hospital. Unlike regular monitoring systems in ICU and wards that indicates the body functions of the patients in confusing numbers and waveforms, the Stasis System indicates different colors to communicate the patient status: green is good, yellow means patient requires care. The system helps involve caregivers and family attendees at the bedside, ensuring they are properly informed of their loved ones condition. These readings are displayed at a central tablet for medical experts to observe and take action. Most importantly, all the patients’ readings are easily accessible by their doctor from anywhere using the mobile app.

Mr. Dinesh Seemakurty, CEO of Stasis said, “Working with a top hospital chain like Fortis helps Stasis make the impact we always dreamed of. Our mission is to accelerate the practice of healthcare towards proactive medicine. This partnership is critical in making that vision a reality. By giving clinician’s access to their patient’s health parameters from anywhere through our secure mobile application, patients can feel safe knowing they are getting the best quality of care.”
