There will be a Sufi & Ghazal concert under the full moon light with stars over looking, followed by the traditional popular Rajasthan folk music program from Manganiyars. Entry for these events is through donor passes. An additional attraction at the venue is a food stall exclusively serving organic cuisine.

“BIAF was conceived & envisaged keeping in mind the need for an International flavor to the Arts Festival in our country. Our endeavor is to showcase world class performances from legendary artists to the generation next. Over the last nine years we have built this large scale festival, which is recognized as one of the top annual global festivals today. Artists from over 25 countries have performed at our festival. Harmony through Arts has been our objective and we hope to continue to carry this message across, especially in these turbulent times. The support of the people of Bengaluru is vital to keep festivals like BIAF alive and there have been magnanimous all these years and I once again take this opportunity to invite the citizens of our city to come & enjoy the wonderful artists from across the globe over the next three weekends. Your support is invaluable to us.” added Dr. Suma Sudhindra – Director of BIAF.

Dr. Veena Murthy Vijay, Director of BIAF, says It’s hard to sustain a large festival for so many years and we have been successfully conducting this year after year. For this we thank Ministry of Culture and other corporates that have had faith in us and have continued to sponsor all these years. “The power of the arts which brings harmony and sustains of our ancient culture across the world has inspired us to conduct Bengaluru International Arts Festival continuously, establishing BIAF as an annual global festival for the 10th year with true international standards”

10 killed in Mumbai building collapse, 60 still trapped

August 31, 2017 by Nasheman

Mumbai: At least 10 persons were killed and another 20 injured when a six-storeyed old residential building collapsed near J.J. Hospital here on Thursday, an official said.

Another 60 people are still feared trapped under the debris of Huseini Building, which came crashing down with a huge booming sound around 8.25 a.m.

War-like efforts were on to rescue those trapped, a BMC Disaster Control official said, adding the death toll could increase.

Twenty persons were rescued from the rubble within three hours of the incident, he added.

The building is situated in a heavily congested locality of south Mumbai’s C Ward, and rescue teams with their big vehicles and heavy equipment faced a tough time approaching the crash site.

The injured, that included two firemen, were rushed to hospital.

According to a woman, the building also housed a nursery-cum-playschool. The playschool was scheduled to open at 10 a.m., two hours after the building collapse.

Local residents, mainly Dawoodi Bohra community members and others, initiated their own manual rescue efforts, moving the rubble with their hands to help the victims.

A 90-strong team of NDRF, State disaster management, a 150-strong team of fire brigade personnel and workers, two sniffer dog squads, electronic gadgetry along with five fire engines, two JCBs, one crane and other machines were deployed to rescue the people buried under the massive heap of rubble.

A BMC bulletin at noon said the structure included an uninhabited godown on the ground floor and total 10 tenements on the remaining upper floors.

It added that the building – a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) cessed structure – was part of the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) redevelopment project, and declared unsafe for living at least six years ago.

“The dangerous building was served evacuation notice in 2011 and the occupants ordered to vacate it to make way for the SBUT redevelopment project, but they failed to heed the warnings,” said a BMC official.

According to the Fire Brigade, the building’s two wings have completely collapsed. The cause of the crash is being probed.

This is the first major building collapse after Tuesday’s deluge in Mumbai, and the second in five days after the Chandivali Crystal Business Park crash on August 26, that claimed six lives.

20 Rohingya Muslim refugees drown fleeing Myanmar

August 31, 2017 by Nasheman

Dhaka: The bodies of 20 Rohingya refugees, including children, were recovered from Naf River on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border after their boat capsized while they were fleeing violence in Myanmar that has forced at least 18,500 Rohingyas to seek refuge across the border.

An official said the boat carrying the Rohingyas was attempting to cross the border into Bangladesh in the Shahparirdwip area when it capsized on Wednesday night. Locals recovered the bodies from the river in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf on Thursday and handed them over to police, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Six bodies were found on Wednesday night and 14 more were recovered from the Bangladesh coast in the morning,” said Chailau Marma, Additional Superintendent of Police in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district.

Bangladesh security forces also detained 75 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, when they were trying to cross the border into Bangladesh, Bbnews24.com said.

The cause of the accident is under probe.

“We’re yet to find a survivor to know what exactly happened at the time and how many Rohingya people were on board the boat which it capsized in Naf River dividing Bangladesh and Myanmar,” said a police official.

The boat reportedly anchored near the Shah Porir Island of Bay of Bengal for a couple of days as the Bangladesh forces did not allow them to enter Bangladesh territory.

The International Organization for Migration said on Wednesday that over 18,000 Rohingya people fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar’s western Rakhine state amid a fresh wave of violence in the region since August 25.

According to reports, thousands of Rohingyas from Myanmar, mostly women, children and elderly people, were still waiting in no-man’s land along Bangladesh’s southeastern Naikhyangchhari border to enter Bangladesh territory.

Bangladesh, which shares about 271 km of border with Myanmar, has refused repeated local and foreign appeals to accept Rohingyas fleeing the coordinated rebel attacks on Myanmar border posts in which 100 people, including 80 insurgents and 12 members of the security forces, have been killed.

Madurai teen commits suicide, note says ‘you can never exit ‘Blue Whale’

August 31, 2017 by Nasheman

Chennai: A second year BCom student in Madurai hanged himself, in another apparent case of suicide under influence of the Blue Whale challenge, and the first such case from Tamil Nadu.

19-year-old Vignesh from Chennai hanged himself in his room, having reached the end of the challenge. Police found a whale cut into his arm and a suicide note in his room which said “Blue Whale- This is not a game but danger. Once you enter, you can never exit”.

Early investigation revealed that his friends found Vignesh was spending long hours on his phone, going through with the challenges as they were issued to him.

The Blue Whale ‘game’ has become a bane to the Central government, with the Ministry of Electronics and Telecommunications issuing a directive to web giants like Google and Facebook to scrub all references to the game from their search results, as the game is not an application and must be ‘played’ through specific forums and websites.

The game is run by a group of ‘moderators’ who come in contact with potential ‘players’ and issue them instructions to perform 50 tasks, either on the day of the task or in advance. The tasks can range from mundane works like watching a video to gruesome ones like inflicting self-harm by means of cutting words or drawings onto the players’ arms and legs. The final task is to commit suicide.

The game originated in Russia, and its creator, Philipp Budeikin, who was a psychology student, confessed to creating the game, claiming he wanted to “clean” society by removing those he deemed to have no value.

Nearly 20,000 Rohingya flee to Bangladesh from Myanmar

August 30, 2017 by Nasheman

Refugee flow gathers pace amid renewed fighting as the international community expresses concern for civilian safety.

More than 90,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee their homes since a crackdown in Rakhine state began in October [Simon Lewis/Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

At least 18,500 Rohingya Muslims, many sick and some with bullet wounds, have fled into Bangladesh over the past six days amid renewed fighting in western Myanmar.

The figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Wednesday came amid increasing concerns by the international community, with foreign governments and organisations worried that Rohingya villages are being subject to collective punishment after an armed group on August 5 attacked police posts and an army base in Rakhine state.

The attacks – in which at least 110 were killed – were claimed by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), a group which was formed by Rohingya living in Saudi Arabia after a bout of serious communal violence in 2012, according to the International Crisis Group.

In the days following the attacks, the Myanmar army has burned down areas of Rakhine state and fired on civilians, according to rights groups and witnesses.

Scores have reportedly been killed. Al Jazeera has been unable to verify the death tolls.

While Rohingya Muslims have largely fled to Bangladesh, Rakhine Buddhists have mostly sought sanctuary in towns and monasteries to the south and east of the fighting.

“As of last night, 18,500 people have come across” from Myanmar’s Rakhine state, Chris Lom, the IOM’s Asia-Pacific spokesman, told the AFP news agency.

‘Stuck at the border’

Lom said exact figures were difficult to obtain because many of those who have made it into Bangladesh might not register with local authorities.

“We also know there are people stuck at the border but we do not know how many,” Lom said.

Bangladesh, which already hosts some 400,000 Rohingya who have fled Myanmar over the years, has vowed to block new arrivals and has deported some of those it has caught trying to make the crossing.

“They are in a very, very desperate condition,” said Sanjukta Sahany, who runs the IOM office in the southern town of Cox’s Bazar near the border.

“The biggest needs are food, health services and they need shelter. They need at least some cover, some roofs over their heads.”

Sahany said many crossed “with bullet injuries and burn injuries,” and that aid workers reported that some refugees “gave a blank look” when questioned.

“People are traumatised, which is quite visible.”

The UN, while condemning the attacks by ARSA, has pressured Myanmar to protect civilian lives without discrimination and appealed to Bangladesh to admit those fleeing the military counteroffensive.

Northern Rakhine has been under lockdown since October last year when a previously unknown group of Rohingya fighters ambushed a series of border posts inside Myanmar.

That prompted a massive military response, leading to some 87,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh, bringing with them harrowing tales of murder, rape and burned villages.

Fires burning

The UN believes the Myanmar government’s response to the crisis may amount to ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.

Satellite data recently accessed by Human Rights Watch show widespread fires burning in at least 10 areas in Rakhine.

Myanmar authorities say Rohingya “extremist terrorists” have been setting the fires during fighting with government troops, while Rohingya have blamed soldiers who have been accused of carrying out extrajudicial killings.

The partnership aims to reach out to 170,000 children across 1,300 government schools in the state.

“The scheme is a dream project conceived by Karnataka Milk Federation on Chief Minister’s (Siddaramaiah) suggestion to help poor children by providing them nutritious food essential for healthy growth and all-round development of schoolchildren,” Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Horticulture Minister A. Bangladesh defeat Australia by 20 runs in 1st Test

August 30, 2017 by Nasheman

Shakib Al Hasan took 10 wickets in the match as Bangladesh defeated Australia by 20 runs

Bangladesh scripted history as the hosts shocked Australia by 20 runs on the fourth day of the first Test match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium here on Wednesday.

This was the first Test victory against Australia for the hosts and with this result Bangladesh have now taken a 1-0 lead in the two match series.

From 158 for 2, Australia slipped to 199 for 8. Lower-order batsmen Pat Cummins (33 not out) and Nathan Lyon (12) then tried to stabilise the innings but Taijul Islam removed Lyon to seal the issue.

Australia entered the fourth day needing 156 runs with eight wickets in hand. Australia’s captain Steven Smith and David Warner added 130 but left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan dismissed both the batsmen and their middle-order failed to rise the occasion.

Man of the Match Shakib took ten wickets and also scored 84 runs in the first innings.

Earlier, Bangladesh scored 260 runs in the first innings with Tamim Iqbal (71) and Shakib scoring handsomely for the hosts.

Then, the Bangladesh bowlers did a brilliant job to dismiss Australia for 217. Shakib took five wickets while Mehidy Hasan scalped three wickets.

In the second innings, Bangladesh scored 221, setting a target of 264, which Australia failed to chase and lost the match by 20 runs.
