July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

A UAE minister says Emirates sought ‘fundamental change and restructuring’ and not shutting down Al Jazeera.

Saudi Arabia and three other Arab countries that have imposed a political and economic blockade on Qatar are to drop their demand that the Al Jazeera Media Network be shut down.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a land, sea and air blockade on Qatar on June 5.

The anti-Doha quartet then issued a 13-point list of demands that included shutting down Al Jazeera Media Network, severing all ties with the Muslim Brotherhood and with other groups, including Hezbollah, al-Qaeda and ISIL (also known as ISIS), limiting Qatar’s ties with Iran and expelling Turkish troops stationed in the country.

In an interview published by The Times newspaper on Wednesday, Noura al-Kaabi, the UAE minister for the federal national council, said the Emirates sought “fundamental change and restructuring” of Al Jazeera rather than to shut it.

“The staff at the channel can keep their jobs and Qatar can still fund a TV channel but not one which provides a platform for extremists and where the English channel is a protective shield for the much more radical Arabic one,” Kaabi told The Times.

She also said that the Saudi-led group was ready to negotiate with Qatar.

“We need a diplomatic solution. We are not looking for an escalation.”

The group previously called the list of demands “non-negotiable”.

In response to the concessions expressed by the UAE minister, Al Jazeera Media Network rejected outside intervention.

“Al Jazeera Media Network rejects any external intervention pertaining to its organisational structure or journalistic mission, and reiterates its independence & professional editorial stance,” the Network said in a statement.

“Al Jazeera continues to stand by journalists and media institutions globally for their right to practise journalism without fear or intimidation. One of the cornerstones of free media is ensuring its ability to operate independently, without interference or censorship from governments or any other party.

“Over the past 20 years, Al Jazeera has demonstrated its editorial independence and refusal to bow down to pressures from anyone, serving as a testament to our commitment to the universal values of journalism.

“It’s clear that recent attempts by governments in the region and elsewhere to throttle the independence of the media is being met by condemnation by all international media institutions, with an urgent demand for an end to interference, intimidation, and threats.

Press freedom and human rights advocates, journalists and social media users from all over the world condemned the demand by the Saudi-led group to shut down Al Jazeera and other media outlets in Qatar, calling it “unacceptable”.

“We are really worried about the implication and consequences of such requirements if they will ever be implemented,” Alexandra El Khazen, head of the Middle East and North Africa desk at Reporters Without Borders, said last month.

Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of the Middle East and North Africa Division at Human Rights Watch, called the Saudi-led group’s demand “absurd”.

“This is just an attempted expansion of the cowardly censorship they have inflicted on their own citizens, but it will fail,” said Whitson.

The Guardian newspaper, in an editorial published last month, said the demand was “wrong”, “ridiculous” and “must be resisted”, joining the growing chorus of voices raising concerns about suppression of press freedom in the Gulf.

India, NZ to battle for last WWC semi-final spot

July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

India Women Cricket

New Delhi: The Indian team is in a must-win situation at the ICC Women’s cricket World Cup as back to back losses have put their chances of making the semi-finals in jeopardy.

Seething in pain, the Indians need redemption via a convincing victory against New Zealand on Saturday to seal a berth in the semi-finals of Women’s World Cup 2017at the Derby Cricket ground.

The Indians are in a spot of bother now and have to produce a Houdini’s act to escape elimination from the 11th edition of the Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Against the Indians are their current form, past statistics and former women cricketers’ prediction on the match favorites.

In the 10 head-to-head encounters in World Cup, the Kiwis have decimated India on nine occasions. The solitary win emerged in the 2005 WC semi-finals, where Indians comprehensively bulldozed through and reached their first finals of a World Cup.

Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj are the only two survivors from that summer afternoon battle where Indians emerged victorious by 40 runs at Potchefstroom, South Africa. However, former Kiwi cricketer and current coach Haidee Tiffin will look to avenge that.

India and New Zealand have suffered defeats in their previous games against Australian and England respectively. Saturday’s game will be more about performance, swiftness, unpredictable strategy rather than a deft, traditional game.

The Kiwis have a slight edge with all round athleticism led by skipper Suzie Bates. Bates, a former basketball player at the 2008 Beijing Olympics is the only Olympian to play the game of cricket.

A big attraction is 16-year-old Kiwi leg-spinner Amelia Kerr, who could prove to be an unexpected surprise for the Indian eves.

India’s recent performance seems like an inflated balloon, with batting, their main strength letting them down. Without a strong total to defend, the Indian bowlers will not be able to contain the opposition.

However, the Indians have two strengths. Deceptive loop deliveries of the spinners, that bamboozle batters for caught behind or stumping.

The ground, Derby seems to be the home ground for Indians where they had won their initial encounters of the World Cup. Knowing seasoned coach Tushar Arothe, we can see expect change in batting line up, more aggression in batting, innovative field placement and overall body language of Indians.

Mithali became the highest run scorers in One-Day Internationals during the last game, but on Saturday she will need ample support from Jhulan, Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma and Poonam Yadav.

SC orders CBI probe into extra-judicial killings in Manipur

July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today directed a probe by the CBI into the alleged extra-judicial killings by the Army, the Assam Rifles and the Manipur Police in the insurgency-hit state. A bench of Justices M B Lokur and U U Lalit asked the CBI director to appoint a team of officers to conduct the probe into the alleged killings.

The court was hearing a PIL seeking probe and compensation in the alleged 1,528 extra-judicial killings in Manipur from 2000 to 2012 by security forces and police. On April 20, the Army had told the apex court that it cannot be subjected to FIRs for carrying out anti-militancy operations in insurgency-prone areas like Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur, while alleging local bias in judicial inquiries conducted against it in these regions, which have tarnished its image.

“In every military operation, the Army cannot be disbelieved. Every judicial inquiry cannot be against the Army. The alleged extra-judicial killing cases in Manipur are not cases of massacre, rather these are cases of military operations,” the Centre had told the court.

The bench had also pulled up the Manipur government for not taking action on such alleged fake encounters by armed forces and asked was it “not supposed to do anything”. The Army had told the court that the judicial probes conducted into alleged extra-judicial killing charges were “biased” and slanted against them due to local factors.

It had alleged that the district judges, who were locals, had conducted the judicial inquiries into the alleged killings and local factors came in the way of the probe reports which went against the armed forces. The court was earlier told that there were 265 cases of deaths which have to be examined and there were various reports of the commission of inquiry in which serious allegations have been levelled against armed forces personnel.

The apex court had earlier asked the Centre to segregate the cases related to the armed forces from the list of 265 incidents of extra-judicial killings in Manipur. The Centre had said that out of the 282 cases, which were referred to it for verification, 70 matters were found to be related to the Army and Assam Rifles, while the rest concerned the state police.

In July last year, the apex court had directed a thorough probe into the alleged fake encounter killings in Manipur saying the use of “excessive or retaliatory force” by the armed forces or police was not permissible in ‘disturbed areas’ under the controversial Armed Force Special Powers Act.

SC demands Mallya’s presence to proceed in contempt case

July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

Vijay Mallya

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today considered the Centre’s submission that proceedings to extradite embattled businessman Vijay Mallya are going on in London and said the contempt case against him would move further only when he is produced before it.

A bench comprising Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit took note of the fresh status report, referred by Attorney General K K Venugopal that efforts to bring Mallya back were on. The apex court, which was to pronounce quantum of the sentence today against Mallya, who has alreday been convicted for its contempt, said proceedings can’t move further unless the businessman is produced before him.

Earlier, Mallya had failed to make a personal appearance before the top court despite being directed to do so. The apex court had on May 9 held Mallya, who is presently in the United Kingdom, guilty of contempt on a plea by the consortium of lender banks, led by the State Bank of India, for his failure to furnish details of all his Indian as well as offshore assets.

It had directed Mallya to appear before it today to argue on the quantum of punishment. The offence of contempt of court entails a maximum imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of upto Rs 2,000 or both. India had recently asked Britain to ensure early extradition of Mallya, who is an accused in a bank loan default case of over Rs 9,000 crore involving his defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

The apex court’s order had come on a plea by the consortium of banks, led by the State Bank of India (SBI), which had said that Mallya had allegedly transferred INR 2,581.41 million received from British firm Diageo to his children in “flagrant violation” of various judicial orders. The bench had reserved its order on two pleas of lending banks seeking contempt action and a direction to Mallya to deposit INR 2,581.41 million received from offshore firm Diageo respectively.

The banks have alleged that Mallya had concealed facts and diverted the money to his son Siddharth Mallya and daughters Leanna Mallya and Tanya Mallya in “flagrant violation” of the orders passed by the Karnataka High Court. The bench had also pulled up Mallya for not giving details of the INR 2,581.41 million which he had allegedly received from Diageo in February last year, saying it was of the “prima facie view” that proper disclosure as per its earlier order was not made.

The banks had on August 29 last year told the Supreme Court that Mallya had deliberately not made full disclosure of his assets including the INR 2,581.41 million he received on February 25 from Diageo.

July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

Dismisses application filed by the State of Maharashtra seeking vacation of stay

QNET

Delhi: Direct selling company QNet and its sub-franchisee Vihaan Direct Selling (India) Pvt. Ltd were granted further relief today when the Supreme Court granted no interference to the stay issued earlier in March.

Bench of Justice Nariman and Justice Kaul heard the matter briefly and observed that the stay granted on the earlier occasion needs no interference. The court thereafter dismissed the application filed by the State of Maharashtra seeking vacation of stay.

The Hon’ble Supreme Court sought information from the State on the status of the appointment of the Monitoring Authority. In response, the state of Maharashtra indicated that they have not taken any steps in this regard.

Earlier on March 27, 2017, the Supreme Court had ordered a stay on all FIRs and proceedings against QNet’s business in India. The order is seen as a positive development for the direct selling industry as it comes at a juncture when the government is trying to instill confidence in the industry with the introduction of the model Direct Selling Guidelines.

FIR against comedy group AIB’s Tanmay Bhat for joke against Modi

July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

AIB Modi Joke

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell on Friday registered a complaint against comedian Tanmay Bhat promoted All India Bakchod (AIB) for posting an offensive meme about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an official said here.

“We have registered the FIR at the Cyber Police Station in this regard after due legal consultations. Further details will be communicated later,” said Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Rashmi Karandikar.

The AIB’s meme was seen on Wednesday in which a person resembling Modi is shown with the ears and nose of a dog, and a similar person is busy on a mobile in another picture.

Following an uproar on the social media and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) circles, the AIB deleted the meme, only to invite the wrath of Congress activists.

On Thursday, some Twitteratti vented anger and tagged the Mumbai Police demanding strictest action against the AIB for the ‘obnoxious posts’ on the Prime Minister.

Undeterred by critics, Bhat vowed he would continue to make jokes repeatedly.

“Will continue making jokes. And deleting if necessary. And making jokes again. And apologizing if necessary. Don’t care what you think,” he tweeted.

Defending the meme on the AIB website and on Twitter, Bhat termed it lack of rational reasoning.

When contacted by IANS for his comments on the FIR, Bhat did not respond to calls or messages.

A Muslim Family of 10, Women and A Disabled Child Attacked Brutally By a Mob in a UP Train

July 14, 2017 by Nasheman

Muslim Family Attacked

Lucknow: A Muslim family of 10 including women, children, elders and a handicapped teenager were brutally assaulted in a train and robbed by a gang on Wednesday evening in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district.

The horrific incident took place on the Shikohabad-Kasganj passenger train when the family was on its way back from attending a marriage ceremony. A group of 35-30 men assaulted the family with iron rods and sticks between Mota and Nibkarori railway stations- some 30 km away from Farrukhabad junction.

A video of the incident showed group banging on the passenger coach in which the family was traveling and pelting stones to break the windows. They later jumped inside the train through the emergency window by breaking the glass panel.

50-year-old Mohammad Shakir, who suffered severe head injury along with fracture in right hand in the assault said, “It was a horror which I cannot forget. They attacked us with iron roads, robbed our belonging and molested our women. They didn’t even spare my 17-year-old physically and mentally challenged son.”

Horrified by the act, Shakir added, “They verbally abused us with some in the attacking group saying, “Kill them, they are Muslims”, and they continued to beat us until we went unconscious.”

According to Arsaan (22), son of Shakir, “The assailants groped my mother and sister blouse and salwar torn it. They snatched their gold chains and took our luggage and jewellery. They even attacked other passengers who came to rescue us. Later the passengers abandoned the coach leaving us behind to fight the assailants.”

“As soon the train stopped, the assailants jumped out of the train and called 20-25 youths who were already waiting on bike. We immediately locked the doors of the coach from inside and shut down the windows but the assailants started stone pelting and broke the emergency window panel. They barged inside the coach and again started assaulting us, while the other passengers abandoned the train,” he said.

“After the incident we attempted to contact police on dial 100, but every time, call was dropped. Later when the train reached Farrukhabad junction, the GRP took us to hospital,” he added.

The victims were admitted to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia government hospital, Farrukhabad, with fractured limbs and severe injuries to the head and stomach.

An FIR has been lodged under IPC section 395 and based on the video of the incident, special operation group and other police teams have detained three men and are questioning them.

Bob Corker: Saudi terrorism support ‘dwarfs’ Qatar’s

July 13, 2017 by Nasheman

Republican says Saudi crown prince may have made ‘rookie mistake’ over Qatar blockade, as diplomatic efforts continue.

Corker has previously threatened to block US arms sales to the GCC until there was a clear path for settling the dispute [AFP]

by Al Jazeera

An influential US Republican senator has criticised the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, over a blockade on Qatar by the kingdom and three other Arab states.

The comments by Bob Corker, chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, came as tensions in the region continue over the crisis, with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson expected to make an unscheduled stop in Doha on Thursday.

“The amount of support for terrorism by Saudi Arabia dwarfs what Qatar is doing,” Corker said on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar on June 5 and imposed a land, air and sea blockade on the country.

The quartet accuse Qatar of funding “terrorism”, an accusation Qatar rejects as “baseless”.

Corker said he was “really disappointed to see what Saudi Arabia did after having a great summit and bringing everybody together”, referring to May’s Riyadh conference that saw leaders of the GCC and other Arab states meet US President Donald Trump.

“I think this is quite possibly a rookie mistake by a crown prince who I think could be the future for Saudi Arabia,” Corker added.

The Tennessee senator made the comments while addressing the former US ambassador to Israel during a legislative committee hearing.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro, reporting from Washington, DC, said the Saudi crown prince is “widely seen as among the blockade’s chief architects and a chief organiser of the alliance behind it”.

She said that Corker has been among the blockade’s strongest US critics, adding that the senator has threatened to block weapons sales to members of the GCC until there was a clear path for settling the dispute.

Andreas Krieg, an assistant professor at King’s College London, told Al Jazeera that Corker’s comments are a lot to take in for the Saudi-led group.

“Saudi Arabia actually thought they had the Trump administration, especially the Republicans, on their side,” Krieg said. “That’s why they escalated so quickly and now they realise they actually don’t and the Trump administration has actually rolled back from earlier comments, and that is quite something to swallow for the UAE and Saudi Arabia.”

Tillerson’s Gulf visit

Corker’s comments came as Tillerson wrapped up the third leg of his four-day trip to the Gulf aimed at helping solve the GCC crisis.

Having shuttled between Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in an effort to help solve the GCC crisis, Tillerson is set to make an unexpected return to Doha on Thursday before returning to the United States.

On Wednesday, Tillerson met the Saudi king, crown prince and his counterparts from the Saudi-led quartet.

The Jeddah visit followed meetings in Doha with the Qatari emir and foreign minister on Tuesday.

Tillerson told reporters that the Qatari government had “reasonable” views during the crisis.

“I think Qatar has been quite clear in its positions, and I think those have been very reasonable,” he said.

Tillerson and the Qatari foreign minister also announced that the US and Qatar had signed an agreement on combating “terrorism” and its financing during the visit.

Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said the memorandum of understanding was not related to the current dispute.

But Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the UAE called the agreement “insufficient” and the result of “repeated calls” from the Saudi-led group over the past few years.
