Monsoon Session of Karnataka Assembly to Start from Today

June 5, 2017 by Nasheman

vidhana soudha

Bengaluru: The ten day long monsoon session of Karnataka state assembly will begin from today on June 05. With this new session, a stage has been set for a war of words between the ruling party Congress and BJP led opposition. Current monsoon session is one of the shortest sessions in recent years which called in month advance as the state government is planning to introduce Goods and Service Tax in the state with effect from July 01, 2017.

The session is expected to give its green signal to GST, state budget introduced for the year 2017-18 and other important bills. Recent mysterious death of Karnataka Cadre IAS officer Anurag Tiwari, alleged corruption scandals by the members of ruling party and others are expected to create heated debate in the session.

India played like favourites, says Shahid Afridi

June 5, 2017 by Nasheman

Shahid Afridi

Birmingham: Shahid Afridi was appalled by Pakistan’s abject surrender but he credited India for their commanding show, saying the defending champions lived upto the favourites tag in their Champions Trophy opener here.

Afridi, a former Pakistan captain, said his country’s drab show last night took away all the excitement from what was expected to be a high-voltage Group B encounter.

“The Indo-Pak Champions Trophy encounter failed to live up to its hype as Pakistan produced a forgettable performance at Edgbaston. As a Pakistani supporter, the drab show was a painful watch indeed as India once again proved that it has a stranglehold over its neighbour that it is in no mood to relinquish,” Afridi wrote in a column for the ICC.

“India started as the favourite and played the entire game in the same frame of mind, even as Pakistan crumbled limply.”

India launched their ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a resounding 124-run victory over Pakistan last night, extending their dominance over the arch-rivals in major ICC tournaments.

Analysing the match, Afridi said India came hard on skipper Sarfraz Ahmed’s shoddy game plan.

“Sarfraz Ahmed won what was a crucial toss in tricky weather conditions. When rain is around, the team batting second gets a huge advantage. Unfortunately though, a poor game plan and shoddy execution, besides abysmal fielding, nullified the advantage,” he said.

“Mohammad Amir bowled a splendid first over and I thought he would strike with the new ball. Strangely though, Sarfraz handed the other new ball to Imad Wasim despite the overcast conditions. The tactic was perplexing for me since the match wasn’t being played in the UAE! Even if Sarfraz wanted to surprise India, he should have deployed his faster bowlers after an over or two from Imad.”

Afridi said Pakistan had allowed Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to settle down and once that happened, it was difficult to stop the duo.

“Players of the calibre of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are very hard to stop if they are allowed to settle early, and that is what Pakistan allowed them to do,” he said.

“While the Indian openers negotiated Amir carefully, they gradually got their eye in against Imad. Pakistan missed a trick and for the rest of the Indian innings there was hardly a period where they looked troubled.

“Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh than flayed a tiring attack before Hardik Pandya’s cameo turned the match totally in the defending champion’s favour,” Afridi added.

Afridi also came hard on Pakistan’s shoddy fielding effort.

“Pakistan’s fielding was very ordinary too, with easy runs given away inside the circle, besides the dropped chances, which made life tougher for the bowlers. The players looked tense and nervous despite the claims to the contrary before the start of the game,” he said.

Afridi was also scathing on his attack on the Pakistani batsmen, who could muster just 164 runs.

“I feel that our batsmen are short on the skills side and freeze under pressure. The senior lot failed to cope with the increasing run-rate and got out after occupying the crease for long but barren durations.

“There is simply no excuse for a 164-run score on a flat wicket where the opposition managed 319 with consummate ease,” he said.

UAE’s Etihad Airways announces suspending flights to Qatar

June 5, 2017 by Nasheman

Etihad Airways

Abu Dhabi:  Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has said that it would suspend flights to Qatar after the United Arab Emirates was among major Gulf states to sever ties with Doha in an unprecedented regional crisis, said a report from AFP on Monday.

Etihad said flights would stop on Tuesday, after the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain said they would cut all air, land and sea links with Qatar within 24 hours.

Etihad, which operates four return flights to Doha daily, said the measure will be in place “until further notice”.

Other carriers from the three Gulf countries, including Dubai’s Emirates, are likely to announce similar measures.

The unprecedented measures against Doha include ordering Qatari citizens to leave within 14 days and banning citizens of the three Gulf states from travelling to Qatar.

Doha airport, along with airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have become major hubs after Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways seized a significant chunk of transcontinental travel on routes linking Western countries with Asia and Australasia.

Cairo: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terror groups including the Muslim Brotherhood and interfering in its internal affairs.

“Qatar’s policy threatens Arab national security and sows the seeds of strife and division within Arab societies according to a deliberate plan aimed at the unity and interests of the Arab nation,” Al Ahram news quoted an Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement as saying.

The four countries announced they would withdraw their diplomatic staff from Qatar, and also the closure of its airspace and borders severing land, sea and air contact within the next 24 hours.

According to Saudi state news agency SPA, authorities announced that Qatari troops would be pulled from the ongoing war in Yemen due to Doha’s “practices that strengthen terrorism” and its support to groups “including Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as dealing with the rebel militias”, reports the BBC.

In an official statement, Bahrain said Qatar has interfered with its internal affairs, engaged in negative media coverage against it, and supported terrorist activities and armed groups, as well as financed Iranian-backed groups that are responsible of vandalism and violence in the country, reports Xinhua news agency.

The country has asked Qatari diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours.

The UAE has also accused Qatar of “supporting, funding and embracing terrorism, extremism and sectarian organisations”, according to state news agency WAM.

Monday’s move comes after Qatar alleged that hackers last month took over the site of its state-run news agency and published what it called fake comments from its ruling emir about Iran and Israel, Al Ahram reported.

Its Gulf Arab neighbours responded with anger, blocking Qatari-based media, including the Doha-based satellite news network Al Jazeera.

In March 2014, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain had recalled their ambassadors from Qatar its alleged backing of then-Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood member.

However, eight months later they returned their ambassadors as Qatar forced some Brotherhood members to leave the country and quieted others.

CBI searches Prannoy Roy’s home, NDTV calls it ‘witch-hunt’

June 5, 2017 by Nasheman

prannoy roy

New Delhi: The CBI today searched the residence of NDTV founder Prannoy Roy here and three other locations for allegedly causing losses to a private bank, a move termed by NDTV as a “witch-hunt” based on “same old” false accusations.

The agency has registered a case against Roy, his wife Radhika and RRPR Holdings for allegedly causing losses of Rs 48 crore to ICICI Bank, CBI sources said.

They said the agency was conducting searches at four places in the national capital and Dehradun.

“This morning, the CBI stepped up the concerted harassment of NDTV and its promoters based on the same old endless false accusations,” NDTV said in a statement.

It said NDTV and its promoters would fight tirelessly against this witch-hunt by multiple agencies.

“We will not succumb to these attempts to blatantly undermine democracy and free speech in India. We have one message to those who are trying to destroy the institutions of India and everything it stands for: we will fight for our country and overcome these forces,” it said.

‘484 civilians killed’ in US-led strikes in Syria

June 3, 2017 by Nasheman

US military reports 484 civilian deaths by US-led coalition strikes, but outside monitors put the number much higher.

by Al Jazeera

The US military said that coalition attacks on ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq have killed more than 480 civilians since mid-2014 – a tally that is far below those of outside monitors.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on Friday that it added an additional 132 civilians deaths to its April report, a sharp increase from 352 it previously reported in late April.

However, that total, which only includes civilian deaths through April, was still far short of what non-governmental organisations and monitors have estimated.

Airwars, a London-based collective of journalists and researchers that tracks civilian deaths in Syria and Iraq, estimated more than 3,800 non-combatants have been killed since the US-led coalition’s operations began in August 2014.

Mosul offensive

CENTCOM’s estimate includes 105 civilians killed in a US-led air raid in March against a building in the Iraqi city of Mosul, the single deadliest incident for civilians arising from a coalition strike since anti-ISIL operations began in Iraq and Syria nearly three years ago.

Separately, Al Jazeera’s sources recently said more than 120 civilians were killed in less than a week as Iraqi forces – backed by coalition air power – move to take the remaining pockets of territory held by ISIL in Mosul.

In a statement emailed to Al Jazeera earlier on Friday by the Operation Inherent Resolve press office, the coalition said it “is aware of allegations of civilian casualties”.

It added that the “coalition and Iraqi security forces are making every attempt to safeguard civilians as they liberate the city from ISIS terrorists who are using snipers to target civilians trying to flee the city … The coalition takes all allegations of civilian casualties serious and will assess the allegations”.

The battle to recapture the last stronghold of ISIL in Iraq has now entered its eighth month.

Iraqi government forces, backed by US advisers, artillery and air support, have cleared the east and most of western Mosul and are now focused on controlling the Old City with Iraqi civilians paying a heavy price.

“We moved out and got frightened by heavy air strikes,” one civilian who escaped the fighting in western Mosul told Al Jazeera. “We fled after our house was destroyed by mortar shelling.”

The close-quarter fighting has intensified with reports that ISIL fighters have gathered at the historic al-Nuri Mosque – a centuries-old structure famous for its leaning minaret – to make a last stand as Iraqi forces encircle the armed group in its de facto capital after capturing the city in 2014.

Nearly 200,000 civilians are caught in an area of about eight-square kilometres.

Al Jazeera’s Osama bin Javaid, reporting from Erbil, just east of Mosul, said observers are pushing the Iraqi military and the US-led coalition to take care of civilians, despite the intensity of combat against ISIL.

“Saving people is proving to be easier said than done,” Javaid said. “Aid workers and rights groups have been repeating their concerns that in the process to push ISIL out, Iraqi forces must make sure that civilians are not caught in the crossfire.”

5-year-old sexually abused in Bengaluru

June 3, 2017 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: A five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted, beaten up and dumped in a semi-conscious state on a roadside in the city after she went outside of her makeshift tent to relieve herself in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

According to the police, the incident occurred in K G Halli police station limits, and the girl was found by a policeman on beat patrol in the area. The girl was bleeding due to head injuries and was immediately rushed to the state-run Bowring hospital, officials added. She has suffered several injuries.

Doctors treating the girl suspect she has been sexually assaulted and said she is currently under shock.

“The girl was admitted at about 3.45 AM at our hospital. There are genital injuries like vaginal tear, her ring finger has been amputated and there is also a scalp injury which led to the bleeding,” Dr Manjunath told reporters.

He said the girl was in shock and a bit disoriented. Prima facie it appears she has been sexually assaulted, he said, adding the sex abuse cell would conduct further tests to ascertain this. Doctors said that she is out of danger and all her vital health parameters are stable. She is currently undergoing treatment at the paediatric intensive care unit of the hospital.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru), Hemanth Nimbalkar, said a case has been registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and investigations are on.

He said three teams have been formed, including a technical team and a special team under the supervision of Ajay Hilory, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru East).

Nimbalkar said after the doctors suspected sexual assault, the girl’s mother was traced. Following her statement, a case was registered. She told the police that her daughter had gone out of the tent in which they were staying to attend to a nature’s call and did not return.

Cops said they are waiting for the girl to regain consciousness to take her statement. They suspect that someone known to her or someone residing near her house might have committed the crime.

Minister for Bengaluru Development and Town Planning KJ George visited the girl at the hospital on Saturday afternoon. He called it a “heinous crime” and said the incident shames the entire society.

He said she would be provided the best medical treatment possible and police would investigate and take action against the culprits at the earliest.
