Paul Beatty becomes first American to win Booker Prize

October 26, 2016 by Nasheman

paul-b

London: Paul Beatty has become the first American author to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize for “The Sellout” — a satire of race and class in the United States.

The novel, described by the judges as “shocking and unexpectedly funny”, tells the story of an African-American man who attempts to assert his identity, ironically by reintroducing slavery and segregation in his Los Angeles neighbourhood.

The 54-year-old author collected the 50,000 pound literary award at a ceremony at London’s Guildhall last night.

Beatty appeared overwhelmed with emotion and struggled for words as he began his acceptance speech.

“I hate writing,” the Los Angeles-born writer said.

“This is a hard book,” he went on. “It was a hard for me to write, I know it’s hard to read. Everyone’s coming at it from different angles.”

The author’s caustic wit and humour set against the backdrop of US politics earned him high praise from the judges, who compared his work to the likes of Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift.

Amanda Foreman, chair of the judging panel, said the novel had been chosen unanimously after four hours of deliberation.

“‘The Sellout’ is one of those very rare books that is able to take satire, which is in itself a very difficult subject and not always done well, and it plunges into the heart of contemporary American society with absolutely savage wit of the kind I haven’t seen since Swift or Twain,” she said.

“It both manages to eviscerate every social taboo and politically correct nuance, every sacred cow, while both making us laugh and wince. It is both funny and painful at the same time, and it is really a novel for our times,” she said.

Beatty, who now lives in New York, has three previous novels – “Slumberland”, “Tuff” and “The White Boy Shuffle”.

This is the third year that the award has been open to writers of fiction of any nationality. The shortlist included two British, two US, one Canadian and one British-Canadian writer.

The Sellout beat five other novels, including Madeleine Thien’s Do Not Say We Have Nothing, the bookies’ favourite.

Others in the running were Graeme Macrae Burnet for his Scottish crime thriller “His Bloody Project”, Deborah Levy for her novel “Hot Milk”, Ottessa Moshfegh’s “Eileen”, and David Szalay’s “All That Man is”.

The shortlisted authors each receive 2,500 pounds and a specially bound edition of their book.

The award was presented to Beatty by Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall.

CBI court acquits Yeddyurappa, two sons in bribery case

October 26, 2016 by Nasheman

Yeddyurappa

Bengaluru: In a huge relief to senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, a special CBI court here today acquitted him along with his two sons and son-in-law in a Rs 40 crore illegal mining case.

In a judgement delivered at a packed court hall, Judge R B Dharmagouder also exonerated nine other accused in the kickback case which had cost Yeddyurappa his Chief Ministership in 2011 following indictment by the then Lok Ayukta Santosh Hegde.

CBI had filed a chargesheet in October 2015 against Yeddyurappa, his sons B Y Raghavendra and B Y Vijayendra and son-in-law Sohan Kumar, a Bellary-based private steel company and a Shimoga based Trust run by the family of Yeddyurappa for alleged abuse of official position and corruption.

The case also saw Yeddyurappa spend about three weeks in jail in October 2011 in connection with the case before he was granted bail.

The accused had been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption, according to the CBI chargesheet which had alleged involvement of Rs.40 crore kickbacks, including Rs 20 crore that was allegedly paid to a trust run by the Yeddyurappa’s family, for granting favours, including mining licenses, during his chief ministership.

“Satyameva Jayathe. Justice is done. I stand vindicated,” a relieved Yeddyurappa tweeted shortly after the verdict.

“I am happy that false allegations and politically motivated charges have been dismissed,” the state BJP strongman, who has returned as the state BJP chief earlier this year, told reporters.

He said the court verdict had come as a relief to lakhs of BJP workers and gave a “new fillip” to him to bring back the party to power in the next Assembly polls in Karnataka.

Quetta attack: LeJ kills 60 in Pakistan police academy

October 25, 2016 by Nasheman

Outlawed group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claims responsibility for raid on facility in Quetta where 200 cadets were stationed.

by Al Jazeera

At least 60 people have been killed in an attack on a police training centre in the city of Quetta in Balochistan province, Pakistani officials say.

The announcement on Tuesday came at the end of a military counter-operation.

About 200 trainees were stationed at the facility when the attack occurred late on Monday, officials said, and some were taken hostage during the attack, which lasted five hours.

Most of the dead were police cadets.

Mir Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, home minister of Balochistan, said early on Tuesday that five to six armed men attacked a dormitory inside the training facility while cadets rested and slept.

More than a hundred people were injured, he said. The death toll could rise as many cadets were seriously injured.

The Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) claimed responsibility for the attack. The group, which has been outlawed by the government, has been involved in past attacks on security forces.

“Over the past few years LeJ has been targeted by the military, especially in Punjab province where its leadership was eliminated. And this attack surprised many that it still survives in some form,” writer and columnist Raza Rumi said.

An emergency was declared in all government hospitals of the provincial capital of Balochistan, with the injured shifted to the Civil Hospital Quetta and the Bolan Medical Complex.

Previous attacks

Witnesses reported hearing at least three explosions leading up to the raid. Sources told Al Jazeera that it took at least 30 minutes before Pakistani authorities responded to the assault.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent Kamal Hyder said the police training centre had come under attack in the past, with rockets fired towards it in 2006 and 2008.

Monday’s assault came just hours after armed men shot and killed two customs officers and wounded a third near the town of Surab, about 145km south of Quetta.

The customs officers were targeted by gunmen riding on a motorcycle, said Zainullah Baloch, a spokesman for the local police. Baloch said two officers died on the spot and the injured one was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Earlier on Monday, two assailants on a motorcycle killed a police intelligence officer in the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to Khalid Khan, a local police officer.

The Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack. The group’s spokesman, Muhammad Khurasani, said in a statement that the shooters returned to their hideout after the attack.

Pakistan has carried out military operations against armed groups in tribal areas near Afghanistan and in cities across Pakistan, but the fighters are still capable of staging regular attacks.

India aim to seal series in fourth ODI against New Zealand

Ranchi: After taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series, hosts India will aim to pocket the series when they take on New Zealand in the fourth game at the JSCA International Stadium on Wednesday.

Post the six-run setback in the second ODI in Delhi, India got back to their winning ways after thumping the Kiwis by seven wickets at Mohali.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (80) and his Test counterpart Virat Kohli (154 not out) joined forces with a brilliant 151-run third wicket stand to outplay the visitors after an inspiring bowling effort by the Indians helped restrict them to a modest total.

Going into the fourth game, all eyes will be on India’s struggling opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, who have failed to fire in the first three outings.

Rohit has so far managed just 42 runs in the first three matches with a dismal average of 14 while Rahane has got the starts with scores of 33, 28 and 5 but failed to translate his Test form in the 50-over format of the game.

With the track at the JKSA assisting the batsmen, the Ranchi crowd will once again hope for another batting exhibition from the likes of Rohit, Kohli, Rahane, Manish Pandey and local favourite Dhoni.

Dhoni, who came to bat at No. 4 in the Mohali match, is once again expected to bat at the same position with Pandey, Maharashtra batter Kedar Jadhav and Baroda all-rounder Hardik Pandya to follow.

The bowling department has been very impressive in all matches so far. Seamer Umesh Yadav will lead the pack consisting of Jasprit Bumrah and Pandya.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra along with left-armer Axar Patel has also been among the wickets but more importantly it is Jadhav, who has proved to be Dhoni’s go-to man in the series so far.

With six wickets in his kitty so far, the diminutive part-time off-spinner has emerged as an effective surprise weapon for Dhoni to put the brakes on during the middle overs.

Moreover, with the selectors retaining the same side for the remaining two games, Dhoni as usual isn’t expected to tinkle with the winning combination.

On the other hand, Wednesday’s encounter will give the New Zealanders a golden opportunity to draw level and go into the final match with a chance.

Barring opener Tom Latham, the Kiwis have failed to ensure a consistent batting effort in the three matches so far.

Skipper Kane Williamson, who hit a century in the Delhi game, will once again be the focal point of the Kiwi batting apart from the likes of Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson, Luke Ronchi and James Neesham.

After a dismal Test series, Guptill, who is considered one of the more dangerous ODI openers, has failed to click on all three occasions.

To add to their woes, the Black Caps lack variety in their bowling. Pacers Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Matt Henry have been far from impressive in the subcontinental conditions.

Despite having three spinners in Mitchell Santner, Anton Devcich and Ish Sodhi at his disposal, Williamson’s poor luck at the toss has restrained him from using their services to the fullest where dew played a part in all three matches so far.

Squads:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain & wk), Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Hardik Pandya, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jayant Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (Captain), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Luke Ronchi (wk), Corey Anderson, Tim Southee, Martin Guptill, B.J. Watling (wk), Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner, James Neesham, Anton Devcich, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell

Supreme Court tells Vijay Mallya to disclose his foreign assets in a month

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today directed beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya to give complete details of his assets outside India in four weeks, saying it was of the “prima facie view” that he has not made proper disclosure of his assets.

A bench of Justices Kurian Joseph and R F Nariman also pulled up Mallya for not giving details of USD 40 million which he had received from British firm Diageo on February this year.

“We are prima facie of the view that the report has not made a proper disclosure in respect of our order of April 7, 2016, directing to make complete disclosure of assests and in particular, the receipt of USD 40 million as when it was received and how it has been dealt till date,” the bench said.

It also asked Mallya, who had earlier informed the court about his properties in India, to disclose complete details of his assets abroad in four weeks.

The bench posted the matter for further hearing on November 24.

A consortium of banks including SBI had on August 29 told the Supreme Court that Mallya had deliberately not made full disclosure of his assets including the USD 40 million which he received on February 25 from the British firm Diageo.

On July 25, the apex court, after noting the submissions by Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, had issued notice to Mallya on the banks’ plea and asked him to respond.
Rohatgi told the court that Mallya had provided wrong details of his assets in a sealed cover to the apex court.

AG had further alleged that a lot of information had also been concealed, including a cash transaction to the tune of Rs 2500 crore, which amounted to contempt of court.

Rohatgi had said that the liquor baron had also not agreed to deposit “substantial amount” as part of of Rs 9,400 crore loan due on him to establish his bonafide.

Mallya had maintained that the banks had no right over information regarding his overseas movable and immovable assets as he was an NRI since 1988.

Mallya had also claimed that as an NRI, he was not obliged to disclose his overseas assets, and added that his wife and three children, all US citizens, also need not disclose their assets.

The court on April 7 had directed Mallya to disclose by April 21 the total assets owned by him and his family in India and abroad while seeking an indication from him when he would appear before it.

It had asked Mallya, who owes over Rs 9,000 crore to around 17 banks, to deposit a “substantial amount” with it to “prove his bonafide” that he was “serious” about meaningful negotiations and settlement.

Won’t reconsider 1995 judgment defining Hindutva as ‘way of life’: SC

October 25, 2016 by Nasheman

Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court said on Tuesday that it won’t reconsider its 1995 judgment in which it defined Hindutva a “a way of life and not a religion.”

The SC’s statement came on a plea filed by activist Teesta Setalvad who wanted the court to reconsider that judgment even as five states head to the polls next year. Her plea was to not only redefine Hindutva, but also to ban its use in elections.

Setalvad’s plea also came in the context of the top court already examining a politically explosive question arising out of a separate plea filed in 1990. That question is – Will a religious leader’s appeal to his followers to vote for a particular political party amount to electoral malpractice under Section 123 of the Representation of People Act.

The SC said today it is not examining the larger issue of whether Hindutva means Hindu religion, and whether the use of Hindutva in elections is permissible. The 7-judge SC bench said it is examining a nexus between religious leaders and candidates and its legality under Section 123 (3) of the Representation of People Act.

The ambit of Section 123(3) of the Representation of People Act, provides for the disqualification of a candidate, if he, or any one on his behalf, is found “promoting or attempting to promote feelings of enmity or hatred between different classes of the citizens of India on grounds of religion, race, caste, community or language, for furtherance of the prospects of the election of that candidate or for prejudicially affecting the election of any candidate”.

The 1990 plea the SC is considering is to do with the Maharashtra assembly polls where Shiv Sena and BJP candidates allegedly used two speeches by Bal Thackeray and Pramod Mahajan – both now deceased – to seek votes in the name of Hindutva and the Hindu rashtra. Petitions were filed against many winning candidates of Shiv Sena and BJP in 1990 and the Bombay HC disqualified them.

On appeal, the SC reversed the judgments in all but two cases. One was later dismissed but the other was kept pending.

Bajrang Dal , VHP to protest if state govt celebrates Tipu Jayanthi

October 24, 2016 by Nasheman

TIPU

Mangaluru/Bengaluru: The Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have decided to oppose the state government’s decision of celebrating Tipu Jayanthi across the state on November 10.

Addressing a public meet on Sunday in Mangaluru, VHP joint secretary Surendra Kumar Jain said that the VHP and Bajrang Dal would not allow the government to hold either the birth or death anniversary of Tipu Sultan.

He added that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had to stop trying to please a community by organizing Tipu Jayanti; he alleged that the Chief Minister organized the celebrations for votes and in turn created unrest in the state.

The VHP said that the state government should not repeat the mistake committed last year and if done so this year, both the VHP and Bajrang Dal would jointly stage protests.
