Dishoom has all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler

August 6, 2016 by Nasheman

By: Shaheen Raaj
Producer:

Director: Rohit Dhawan

Star Cast: John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Dhawan, Akshaye Khanna, Rahul Dev & Saaqib Salim and above all Nargis Fakhri, Parineeti Chopra and cricketers like Javed Miandad, Mohinder Amarnath & Atul Wasan in cameo roles.

Music: Abhijit Vaghani & Pritam

The varied scams of India and more specifically the match – fixing scam of the game of cricket has started attracting Bollywoodian film makers too. So in the not so long ago past we had a film like Jannat and just recently we had a film like Azhar based on the alleged match – fixing scam of cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin albeit which dealt more with his personal life’s love tangle, and now comes director Rohit Dhawan’s Dishoom based on the same game of cricket again albeit with a kidnapping angle attached to it.

The plotted scenario of Dishoom kick – starts with a well – planned kidnapping of Indian cricket team’s ace – cricketer Viraj Sharma (Saqib Salim) by the dreaded Altaf (Rahul Dev), at the behest of Wagah (Akshaye Khanna) during a cricket series in the Middle East. The reason for Wagah to kidnap Viraj Sharma is to bail himself out of the Rs. 400 crore worth of debts that he has got himself into because of his match – fixing deals going kaput. When the Indian Government gets to know that Viraj Sharma has been kidnapped and that too, just 36 hours before the crucial & the much awaited India – Pakistan match, they decide to put their best police officer Kabir Shergill (John Abraham) on the job. Fearing national unrest & tension, they instruct Kabir Shergill not to utter a word to anyone about Viraj Sharma’s kidnapping. When the news reaches the embassy of the Middle East, they immediately become ready to offer all kind of possible help to Kabir Shergill. That’s when Kabir Shergill chooses the “never – solved – any -case” police officer Junaid Ansari (Varun Dhawan), who is only way too happy to be chosen for the task of finding Viraj Sharma. And their parter in crime is Ishika (Jacqueline Fernandez) who is a petty thief.

Director Rohit Dhawan’s last outing was Desi Boyz which had really attracted attention towards his superb directorial treatment and with Dishoom he has indeed proved that he is a chip of the old block namely his father David Dhawan. Another plus point of Dishoom is the technical side comprising of screenplay by Tushar Hiranandani & Rohit Dhawan himself, action by Allan Amin & Stefan Richter, music by Abhijit Vaghani (Background Score) & Pritam (Songs – some of which have already proved to be runaway hits), cinematography by Ayananka Bose & editing by Nitin Rokade & Ritesh Soni.

Performance wise the film clearly belongs to John Abraham & Varun Dhawan and together with their superb chemistry and excellently well – matched comic timings will bring the house down and leave the audiences in spits to the extent that may even roll down in the darkened auditorium. But individually both John Abraham & Varun Dhawan are superb & outstanding respectively. In fact Varun Dhawan is improving his histrionic skills film by film and displays his emotional, comic, romantic & action abilities too. Next in line the same is the case with Jacqueline Fernandez and to top it she also adds the oomp & the glamour quotient in right proportion. That apart a seasoned actor like Akshaye Khanna makes his grand re – entry in Bollywood with Dishoom. In fact he is simply outstanding in his cameo role of a bad boy with gay/homosexual streaks omnipresent in him. On the other hand Saqib Salim as the kidnapped cricketer is perfect. And last but not in the least Rahul Dev succeeds in displaying the mean & evil streaks in in his villainous avatar.

Tail Piece: Dishoom has all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler to satisfy the cravings of a masala oriented cine goers hailing from all walks of life.

10,000 Indians stranded in Saudi to be evacuated: Swaraj

August 1, 2016 by Nasheman

New Delhi, Aug 01, 2016, PTI:

About 10,000 Indians stranded in Saudi Arabia will be evacuated and no one will go hungry as ration has been distributed to them, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in Parliament today.

Her deputy V K Singh is leaving for Saudi Arabia to oversee the evacuation process, she said in a statement in both Houses of Parliament.

As members in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha expressed concern over the fate of these Indians, Swaraj made the statement informing them that the Indian embassy was running five camps to feed them and she had received hourly inputs till early today.
“Not one worker of ours will go hungry. This is my assurance to the country through Parliament… We will bring all of them back to India,” Swaraj said.

The government, she said, was in touch with the foreign and labour offices in Saudi Arabia to ensure their early evacuation.

Swaraj noted that the law there Does not permit an emergency exit visa without no objection certificate from the employers who, she said, have shut their factories and left the country, leaving these employees stranded.

The government has requested the Saudi government to give them exit visas as employers had left the country and also urged it to first clear the dues of workers who have not been paid for months, whenever they settle the accounts with the companies concerned.

Singh is leaving for Saudi Arabia to oversee the operation, she said.

She recieved the last report at 2.45 AM, she said and informed the Lok Sabha that ration for 10 days had been distributed in all the five camps. “I am personally monitoring the situation.”

As some opposition members in Lok Sabha raised some questions, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan disallowed them, saying “She (Swaraj) has done everything. She has done really good work. Nobody has worked this much.”

Swaraj’s response also drew praise from the Chair and members in the Rajya Sabha.
Swaraj made the statement in the Lower House amid the din created by Andhra Pradesh MPs, who were demanding special category status for the state.

Senior BJP member L K Advani, who was sitting next to Swaraj, was seen requesting Andhra members with folded hands to allow her to speak.

Novak Djokovic beats Kei Nishkori to claim Toronto Masters title

August 1, 2016 by Nasheman

Toronto: Minutes after completing a 6-3, 7-5 ATP Toronto Masters final win over Kei Nishikori for his 66th career title, Novak Djokovic had already shifted his focus to the Rio Olympics.

The world number one, who claimed his fourth Canadian title with a command performance over Asia’s top player lasting less than 90 minutes, will waste no time in heading south to Brazil for the weekend start of the Summer Games.

“It’s the biggest event in the history of the sport, so to be part of it is already a huge privilege and honour that I will cherish, as I did in Beijing and London Olympic Games,” said the holder of a leading 30 Masters 1000 trophies.

“I had an honour of carrying the flag for my country in London 2012, one of the most unique and unforgettable moments of my life. So I look forward to that, honestly, just being part of it.

“I’m approaching the Olympic Games as any other tournament. I’m trying to respect the same kind of preparation and routine that I have with my team and that I have respected for so many years.

“It has worked well for us this week and as most of the other weeks the last couple of years.”

Djokovic lifted his game in Canada as the week progressed, sweeping to the title without the loss of a set and dispatching challenges from Gael Monfils in the semis followed by Japan’s Nishikori.

“The overall sensation (of Rio) is not going to be the same as the other tournaments, because it’s Olympic Games,” he said. “Of course you represent your country.

“You get to feel that you’re part of something much larger than just the tennis event. I look forward to that.

“I’m going to try to extract that positivity out of that huge attention and energy that will be directed into the Olympic Games and hopefully put myself in a position to battle for a medal.”

Djokovic won a bronze medal in Beijing and just missed the podium in London, losing to Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in the bronze medal match.

Sunday’s title erased memories of a third-round Wimbledon upset loss a month ago to Sam Querrey.

“Everything in life happens for a reason. The fact that I have lost in the first week of Wimbledon allowed me to have a week more of the time with my family and just the quality time off the tennis, thinking about other things, recharging my batteries, and then coming in here with plenty of motivation to do well.

“I couldn’t ask for a better start to the hard court season, and hopefully I can keep going in the right direction.”

Djokovic won his seventh trophy this season. “It has happened many times in my career where I would start a tournament still feeling a little bit uncomfortable on the court and finding my rhythm, and then in the end of the tournament I find that proper comfort level with shots, with the way I feel, with mental attitude.

“My two best performances arrived in semi-finals and finals — the right moment for me.

“That gives me a lot of confidence that I will try to carry into Rio.”

Ashish Patil, producer & director avers, “At Y – Films we like to push the envelope with the stories we tell. Pappu & Papa is something that’s going to tear up that envelope and eat the shreds: It’s incredible how still in the 2nd most populous country in the world; sex is such a taboo topic. Most parents clam up when having to talk to kids about the “The Birds & the Bees”. Research clearly shows that sex talk with parents is directly linked to safer sexual behavior. We’re here to help get this important chat started – in 15 languages – after all, Love & Sex know no language! But none of this will be remotely even possible if we continue to treat sex as a taboo. We are proud to partner with Y – Films for a web – series which we believe will eventually help in normalizing the conversation on safe sex.”

The series is presented by Durex Feel Thin. India’s Thinnest Condom. In association with Ching’s Desi Chinese. The content has been heavily researched & ratified by some of the foremost medical experts, top hormonal & gynecological doctors of the country. We hope it creates some genuine social impact, not just locally but globally.

Thrashing of Dalits by “cow protection” vigilantes outrageous: Elyas Muhammad Thumbe SDPI

July 25, 2016 by Nasheman

sdpi

New Delhi: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) held a massive protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar here terming the incident of thrashing of Dalits by the cow vigilantes for skinning a dead cow in Una of Gujarat. The aftermath of this inhumanly act wherein the Dalits were stripped, flogged, bound and paraded on accusations that they had killed a cow for skinning has triggered protests all over India.

While addressing the gathering in the dharna held in the national capital, party General Secretary Elyas Muhammad Thumbe said, it is the Modi-led forces of aggressive Brahminism who should introspect with regards to the ongoing violent agitations by Dalits in Gujarat and other parts of India as it is not the question where it went wrong, but where did it go right. The discriminatory ideological oppression over Dalits which is being witnessed on Indian soil for ages must end so as to guarantee peace in the nation.

Elyas said it is time to draw the line and stand up against this divisive government at the Centre and States. The truth cannot be forgotten that Dalit, tribal and Muslim communities are exposed to grave security risk always and everywhere. Government, instead of appealing for peace to the victims of attack should chain and punish the cow vigilantes for the barbarism they commit. Cow protection cannot be a cover for the pursuit of the kind of aggressive vigilantism that is seen in different parts of the country.

In his address SDPI Delhi Pradesh President Adv. Aslam said it is now becoming RSS & BJP vs. Dalit, SC/ST, Patidars, Backward Classes, Minorities and Moderates. Gujarat is a failure in the sense that it has failed in its duty to take care of the minorities, Dalits, Adivasis and the people below the poverty line.

The dharna was participated by rights activists representing several socio-political organizations including Reetha Abraham of CRI, Manoj Kumar of INSAF, Dr. Rahul of BAMCEF, SDPI National Secretary M Rafiq Jabbar Mulla, Delhi VP Irfan Ahmed, I.A Khan, Naved Azim, Dr Nawab, Vakeel Johree, Muslehuddin, Raees Ahmed, Ghulam Ali, Mohammed Aamir, Mohammed Uzair, Danish apart from hundreds of Party cadres and members belonging to different communities.

Normal life hit as transport unions in Karnataka strike work

July 25, 2016 by Nasheman

Karnataka bus strike

Bengaluru: Normal life was affected today across Karnataka, including the IT capital here, with over one lakh employees of four state road transport corporations commencing an indefinite strike, seeking wage hike.

As the employees struck work since last midnight, office- goers waiting at bus stops was a common sight across the city, while thousands who had come down to Bengaluru from different parts of the state were seen stranded at Kempegowda bus stand, the city’s main bus terminal.

Commuters had started facing trouble since yesterday evening with drivers and conductors not turning up for work.

Similar reports have emerged from different parts of the state. Authorities in several districts have declared a holiday in schools and colleges.

More than one lakh employees of state transport corporations have gone on strike with about 41 demands, including a 35 per cent wage hike, while state government has offered 10 per cent increase.

Several rounds of reconciliatory meetings held between the management of state transport corporations and the unions, even at the level of Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, had failed with both sides sticking to their stand.

“We are still open for discussion with the unions. They have to come for discussion with an open mind. They will also have to understand the financial situation and reconsider their demand of 35 per cent wage hike. We are ready for discussion at the chief ministerial level,” Reddy had said.|

KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation General Secretary and All India Trade Union Congress leader H V Anantha Subbarao said, “The unions are ready for a meeting with Chief Minister. Let him call a meeting. We feel sorry that public are suffering, but our concerns should also be addressed.”

Meanwhile, stone pelting on buses was reported from different parts of the state like Hassan, Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Belagavi, Shivamogga, Koppal and Chikkamagaluru.

Transport officials said alternative arrangements are being made by giving temporary contract carriage to private operators during the strike.

In the wake of the strike, public were depending on private and own vehicles for commuting even as several commuters complained that private transporters were overcharging.

Transport officials said they have begun crackdown of private transporters who are overcharging.

India inflict innings defeat on West Indies

July 25, 2016 by Nasheman

India-West-Indies

North Sound: Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin starred with a seven-wicket haul as India defeated West Indies by an innings and 92 runs on the fourth day of the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.
Ashwin decimated the West Indies’ middle and lower order after lunch to boast figures of 7/83. This was India’s biggest margin of victory outside the sub-continent.

The Chennai off-spinner made good use of the conditions to extract appreciable turn from the pitch and was helped along by some poor application by the West Indies batsmen.

Carlos Braithwaite, who remained unbeaten on 51, was the highest scorer among the hosts.

Coming together with the hosts toterring at 132/8, Braithwaite and Devendra Bishoo (45) engaged in a desperate battle with the Indian bowlers as they sought to postpone defeat.

The duo displayed copious amounts of patience and application — qualities sadly missing in their top order colleagues — to frustrate the Indian bowlers for a long time and forge a 95-run partnership.

Bishoo even hit Ashwin over the mid-wicket boundary for a six a couple of overs before tea to offer some much needed cheer to the home crowd.

However, the hosts’ heroic resistance suffered a rather tame end shortly after tea. Bishoo fell agonisingly short of a half-century when he offered a relatively tame catch to Cheteshwar Pujara at midwicket while trying to hoick a delivery by Ashwin.

Shannon Gabriel lasted all of three deliveries before being outfoxed by an Ashwin delivery that spun in sharply to hit the stumps as the visitors celebrated a well-deserved victory.

Earlier, the West Indies continued their battle during the rain-shortened morning session.

Opening batsman Rajendra Chandrika and Samuels forged a 67-run stand following the dismissal of Darren Bravo early in the morning.

The match was halted due to rain half an hour before the end of the first session, forcing an early lunch, as the West Indies, who were on Saturday bowled out for 243 in their first essay, were battling to avert an innings defeat.

Resuming the day at 21/1, the West Indies received a big blow in the first over of the day when left-handed overnight batsman Bravo edged an away-moving delivery from pacer Umesh Yadav to wide third slip fielder Ajinky Rahane, who dived low to his left to pluck a brilliant catch.

It was just the start the Virat Kohli-led visitors wanted and the wicket further boosted their confidence.

However, the home batting duo of Chandrika and Samuels came out with strong resistance to deny India any more wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards stadium.

While Chandrika was all about doggedness and determination as he played 84 deliveries for 22 not out, Samuels, 35, showed the way for the West Indies with attacking intent.

Samuels took the attack to the opposition and hit 11 boundaries among the 85 deliveries he faced.

Indian pacer Ishant Sharma tested him early with rising deliveries but he fended them with determination — twice spanking them through the covers for fours.

Indian bowlers also made the fault of bowling much outside the off stump as Samuels and Chandrika found them comfortable.

Samuels produced an off-drive and a punch towards the covers of Mohammed Shami and later punished Ashwin with three fours in a single over, making the best use of experience and feet movement.
