Centurions de Villiers, Kohli nuke Gujarat Lions bowling

May 14, 2016 by Nasheman

de Villiers Kohli

Bengaluru: Maverick Royal Challengers batsmen Abraham de Villiers (129) and Virat Kohli (109) pummelled the Gujarat Lions bowling attack to blast electrifying centuries, powering the team to 248/3 in 20 overs at the M. Chinnaswami Stadium here on Saturday.

It literally rained sixes and fours from the blades of the awesome de Villiers-Kohli duo, sending the jam packed stadium into hysterics.

De Villiers who remained unbeaten smashed 12 sixes and 10 fours while Royal Challengers captain Kolhi blasted eight sixes and six fours. Kohli hit a 55-ball-109 while de Villiers smashed a 52-ball-129.

Altogether, RCB cracked 37 boundaries, 17 fours and 20 sixes. Of the total run of 248 scored, 188 emerged from boundaries alone. Other than the two centurions, only Chirs Gayle hit a four.

Kolhi produced the following scoreboard reading in the 19th over off left arm spinner Shivil Kaushik: 6, 4, 6, 6, 6 and 2, totaling 30 runs.

De Villiers and Kohli built a partnership of 229 runs in 97 balls. The intensity of hitting can be comprehended by the way runs flowed. At one time in the last stages of the innings, the duo plundered 47 runs in 14 balls.

Time and again, De Villiers is proving one characteristic he possesses very consistently: hitting the ball as hard as possible in all possible directions irrespective of the bowler, fielding set-up and the situation of the match.

Some of the sixes hit by de Villiers are so unique that only he could hit them. Some of the shots demanding extreme flexibility included a couple of deep sixes near the third man position, rarely seen before.

In the 16th over, de Villiers scored 23 runs, he reached his century in 42 balls with nine boundaries and eight sixes.

Not just boundaries, quick running between the wickets also helped Royal Challengers greatly in grabbing many quick singles and exploiting sloppy fielding by the Gujarat Lions at times.

Actually starting the innings slowly, Royal Challengers could only manage 10/0 after the first three overs, opened by Chirs Gayle and Kohli. After seven overs, RCB were at 50/1.

Hell-bent on ending his run of poor form, Gayle kept it slow, trying to steal quick singles.

Despite exhibiting great discipline, Gayle succumbed to an inside edge off Dhawal Kulkarni in the fifth ball of the fourth over. Dejected, he walked back to the dugout only to continue his single digit innings streak.

Enter de Villiers, and the face of the innings changed with regular boundaries all over the ground with all possible shots.

Unfazed by the slow start, Kohli and de Villiers started piling up runs slowly, De Villiers survived a stumping attempt by Dinesh Karthik in the ninth over.

With a partnership of 56 runs, Kohli and De Villiers scored 76 runs for Royal Challengers half way through the match.

Despite starting his innings much later than Kohli, de Villiers reached his half-century in 25 balls in the 12th over by a four off Kulkarni.

De Villiers reached 99 in the 16th over with a superb six, yet another extreme shot, coming deep off the wicket to hit a six on the on-side.

Until the fall of Kohli in the second last ball off the match, RCB did not lose a wicket after the dismissal of Gayle in the fourth over, manifesting the hard-hitting determination of the centurions in the match.

Interestingly, Kohli reached the milestone of scoring 3,000 IPL runs in this match, to join two other Royal Challengers, de Villiers and Gayle.

Except for Ravindra Jadeja who had figures of 0/34 in four overs, all the other Gujarat Lions bowlers conceeded expensive economy rates ranging between 11 to 16.66.

Left-arm spinner Shivil Kaushik had an economy rate of 16.66, Dwayne Bravo 15.33, and Dwayne Smith 13.

Though Praveen Kumar leaked 45 runs in four overs, he claimed two wickets while Kulkarni was the over bowler claim a wicket, 1/33.

Brief scores:

Royal Challengers Bangalore 248/3 in 20 overs (Abraham de Villiers 129 not out, Virat Kohli 109; Praveen Kumar 2/45, Dhawal Kulkarni 1/33)

R K Pachauri summoned as accused in sexual harassment case

May 14, 2016 by Nasheman

R K Pachauri

New Delhi: Former TERI chief R K Pachauri was today summoned as accused by a Delhi court which took cognizance of a charge sheet filed against him for allegedly sexually harassing and outraging the modesty of an ex-colleague.

“The court is satisfied that there is sufficient material to proceed against accused R K Pachauri under sections 354-A, 354-B, 354-D, 509 and 341 of IPC. Cognizance taken accordingly … Let the accused be summoned for the next date i.e. July 11,” Metropolitan Magistrate Shivani Chauhan said.

Delhi Police had on March 1 filed an over 1,400-page charge sheet in the court against Pachauri under sections 354-A (sexual harassment), 354-B(assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354-D (stalking), 509(word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 341 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC.

“Charge sheet perused. Heard. There are allegations against the accused that he made sexually coloured remarks upon the complainant on several occasions. He touched the complainant inappropriately despite a clear expression of disapproval from her side. He sent inappropriate SMSes and WhatsApp messages to the complainant,” the Metropolitan Magistrate said.

The charge sheet arrayed 23 prosecution witnesses, many of whom are present and former employees of TERI.

Pachauri was granted an anticipatory bail in the case on March 21, last year. On February 13, last year an FIR was registered against Pachauri on charges of sexual harassment under IPC sections 354, 354(a), 354(d) (molestation) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

IPL: Delhi thrash Hyderabad at home

May 13, 2016 by Nasheman

Hyderabad: Delhi Daredevils rode on a powerful batting performance to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets in an Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Thursday.

Chasing a target of 147 runs, Delhi did not face too much difficulties from the Hyderabad bowlers before romping home with 11 balls to spare.

Despite the loss, Hyderabad continue to sit at the top of the IPL table with 14 points from 11 matches. They have the same number of points as second placed Gujarat Lions but are ahead due to a superior run rate.

The hosts will however be disappointed with the fact that they have suffered a heavy defeat in their last home game of the ongoing season. They now face three away matches on the trot.

Delhi on the other hand, climbed to the third spot with 12 points from 10 matches.

The visitors were off to a poor start with opener Mayank Aggarwal departing early. But Quinton de Kock and Karun Nair (20) put together a 55-run partnership off 37 balls to build the foundation of a successful run chase.

Pacer Moises Henriques gave the noisy home crowd a glimmer of hope by removing both Nair and de Kock in the 10th over.

The Australian got Nair with a beautiful yorker but was a bit lucky to get de Kock’s wicket. The South African star had attempted an upper cut to a short pitched delivery which was sailing over his head on the way to the wicketkeeper.

The umpire decided to award a caught behind decision, but television replays later showed that the bat did not connect with the ball. De Kock scored 44 runs off 31 balls with five boundaries and two sixes.

But Delhi faced no trouble from thereon as Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson took them to victory. Pant was unbeaten on 39 runs off 6 deliveries with two boundaries and three well-struck sixes. Samson remained unbeaten on 34 runs, hitting a couple of sixes during his 26-ball stay in the middle.

For Hyderabad, Henriques was the best bowler with figures of 2/19 in three overs while veteran pacer Ashish Nehra (1/23) was the only other bowler to get a wicket.

Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad squandered a brilliant start to finish at 146/8 against a disciplined Delhi Daredevils bowling.

The hosts were once again off to a brilliant start as the opening duo of David Warner (46) and Shikhar Dhawan (34) fired 51 runs in the powerplay to lay the platform but lost the momentum as the Delhi bowlers bounced back with some brilliant efforts.

Warner, who has been in prolific form this season, looked set for another big score but off-spinner Jayant Yadav foxed him with a slower one to dismiss him four short of his sixth half-century. The Australian smashed six boundaries and a six to add 67 with Dhawan.

Next in, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (27) joined Dhawan but the duo could add only 31 runs as leg-spinner Amit Mishra sent the southpaw packing with Sanju Samson latching on to a brilliant running catch at deep midwicket. Dhawan’s 37-ball knock was laced with three hits to the fence.

Mishra struck again in his very next overA to remove incoming batsman Yuvraj Singh (8) and then Shami, who leaked 22 off his first two overs, packed Moises Henriques off the first delivery of his third over to reduce the hosts to 114/ 4.

Young Deepak Hooda (10) then added 21 runs for the fifth wicket with Williamson, only to be foolishly dismissed hit wicket from a slower delivery off Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Williamson soon joined Hooda at the dug-out after being cleaned up by Chris Morris. In his attempt to accelerate the scoring, the Kiwi tried to flash a fast yorker length ball only to find his bails in the air. His 24-ball knock included three boundaries.

Morris then ran out Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1) in his own follow through as wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha (7), Barinder Sran (1) and Ashish Nehra (1) could only add seven runs in the last over.

For the visitors, Mishra and Coulter-Nile picked two wickets while Yadav, Shami and Morris chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Brief scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 146/8 (David Warner 46, Shikhar Dhawan 34, Kane Williamson 27, Mishra 2/19, Coulter-Nile 2/25) vs Delhi Daredevils 150/3 in 18.1 overs (Quinton de Kock 44, Rishabh Pant 39 n.o., Sanju Samson 34 n.o.; Moises Henriques 2/19).

UP school principal divides class on caste basis, removed

May 13, 2016 by Nasheman

caste

Hathras: A principal in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district worked out his own “caste arithmetic”, segregating students of Class IX on the basis of their caste and appointing class teachers on a similar basis, prompting authorities to remove him.

Acting on complaints that Radhey Shyam Varshney, Principal of Seth Phulchand Bagla Inter College, a government- aided institution, had segregated students on the basis of their caste — Scheduled Caste, Backward and General — District Magistrate Avinash Krishna Singh ordered a probe by the District Inspector of Schools (DIoS).

After the matter was found to be true, the principal was removed.

Varshney had also appointed same caste teachers in the class and three of them, working as class teachers, have also been removed from their respective posts.

As per Varshney’s scheme of things, a general category teacher was appointed for a classroom having general students. Likewise, a a scheduled caste teacher was chosen for a classroom with SC students, and an OBC teacher for OBC students.

“We had received a complaint of discrimination against Principal of Seth Phulchand Baagla Inter College for separating classes on the basis of caste. We conducted an inquiry and found that three sections — A, B, C — of Class 9 had difference in ratio over the distribution of General, SC and OBC students,” Singh said.

“Section A had more of General category students as compared with OBC and Schedule Caste, in the same way section B had more OBC students and similarly section C had more SC students,” he said.

Some students had alleged that discrimination was being done in the class on basis of caste in seating arrangements and admissions in the college.

They had complained that the absurd practice was going on since April 1, the day new session started.

“We are planning to take strict action…We have advised the college administration to distribute the students evenly in the class and this should be done urgently,” the DM added.

Progressive groups demand scrapping of Bangalore Blue-print Action Group

May 13, 2016 by Nasheman

BBPAG

Bengaluru: Around 120 people representing various progressive civil society organisations, trade unions, workers federations, resident welfare associations, artistes, street vendor associations, environmental groups, etc. came together in protest against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s 28th April 2016 decision to form the Bangalore Blue-print Action Group (BBPAG).

Terming it as a Club of Rich and Famous, protestors demanded that the Chief Minister must defer to the Constitution of India and immediately scrap this BBPAG. The Chief Minister was asked to comply with the Constitutional 74th Amendment (Nagarpalika) Act, 1992 and set up the District/Metropolitan Planning Committees and make them functional within three months. The Chief Minister was also asked to immediately take steps to made Ward Committees functional as directed by the High Court of Karnataka over two years ago.

The protest took place at the headquarters of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike. Responding to the protests, Hon’ble Mayor Manjunath Reddy stated that he appreciates the meaning and depth of the concerns raised, and that he would communicate them to the Chief Minister. However, he declined to step out of the extra-Constitutional BBPAG stating:

“I cannot go against the Government. The Government gives funds to BBMP. If I go against the Government, then BBMP may stop receiving funds.”

This fear expressed by the Mayor clearly indicates how Mr. Siddaramaiah, celebrating his third year in power, is curbing autonomy and independence of Local Governments in blatant violation of the Constitution of India.

A copy of the representation received by the Mayor, endorsed by various progressive groups and organisations, is enclosed along with a note on the importance of implementing the Nagarpalika Act in totality. The main demands are:

We demand that the Karnataka Government must take immediate action to:

  1. Constitute Area Sabhas and Ward Committees in all Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils, and also ensure such oversight bodies are instituted in smaller urban areas/Nagar Panchayats (with population less than 300,000). All proceedings of such bodies must at all times be public. (The constitution of Ward Committees is also required per the directions of the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka in W. P. No. 46523/2012 c/w W.P. 24739/2012, an order that stands violated for over a year now.)
  2. Constitute, by a transparent and accountable process, District/Metropolitan Planning Committees, taking care to ensure representation from trade unions, public sector bodies, farmers organisations, civil society organisations, pourakarmika unions, street vendors associations, small traders associations, students, home keepers, public health networks, womens groups, human rights networks, child rights networks, environmental networks, sociologists, ecologists, informal sectors, teachers, economists, urban and regional planners, etc., while also including a representative from the IT/BT sector, as non-voting, advisory members of such bodies. Proceedings of this Committee must be public at all times, and its outcome must shape land use plans per the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, 1961.
  3. Ensure these bodies are established and made functional in every respect within the next three months.
  4. Ensure that every District/Metropolitan Planning Committee produces its Draft District/Metropolitan Development Plan by the end of 2016, and the same is taken up for consideration in 2017 Budget.

Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday re-appointed former India skipper Anil Kumble as its cricket committee chairman while his teammate Rahul Dravid was added as a member of the panel along with Sri Lanka’s former skipper Mahela Jayawardene.

Kumble, who was appointed the chairman in 2012 was given a three-year extension at the top post, the ICC said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Dravid and Jayawardene have been appointed to the committee, adding even more cricketing experience to the list of eminent people already on the committee.

Dravid and Jayawardene have played 1,161 international matches between them from 1996 to 2015, and each has been appointed for a three-year term. They will attend their first meeting at Lord’s on May 31 and June 1, three weeks before the ICC annual conference takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dravid has been elected by the current Test captains as current player representatives, replacing former Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has completed his final three-year term.

Jayawardene has been appointed as a past player representative and takes over from former Australia captain Mark Taylor, who has also completed his final three-year term.

Former Australia off-spinner and ex-Chief Executive of Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA), Tim May, has also been elected by the current Test captains as current player representative, replacing Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who has completed his three-year term.

Richard Kettleborough, three-time ICC Umpire of the Year, has been appointed as umpires’ representative in the committee and replaces Steve Davis, who retired last year.

ICC general manager cricket, Geoff Allardice, who also administers the ICC Cricket Committee meeting, said, “I want to thank Mark Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Steve Davis for their significant contribution to this committee.”

Malegaon blasts: NIA files chargesheet, clean chit to Sadhvi Pragya

May 13, 2016 by Nasheman

Sadhvi Pragya Thakur

Mumbai: In a complete U-turn, the NIA today dropped all charges against Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and five others in the 2008 Malegaon blast case while charges under the stringent MCOCA law have been given up against all the other 10 accused including Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit.

During investigation, “sufficient evidences have not been found against” Pragya Singh Thakur and five others, the NIA said, adding it has submitted in the chargesheet “that the prosecution against them is not maintainable”.

Today’s development in the case, in which seven people were killed in twin blasts when people were coming out of prayers during Ramzan in September 29, 2008.

There have been a lot of twists and turns in the probe into the Malegaon blast which was described as a handiwork of people associated with Hindu right wing groups.

The case was investigated initially by Joint Commissioner of Mumbai’s ATS Hemant Karkare who was killed during the 26/11 Mumbai attack. Before the NIA took over the case in 2011, ATS had booked 16 people but filed charge sheets on January 20, 2009 and April 21, 2011 against 14 accused in a Mumbai court.

Purohit and Pragya had moved several applications before Bombay High Court and Supreme Court challenging the charge sheet and applicability of stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case.

Shiv Narayan Kalsangra, Shyam Bhavarlal Sahu, Praveen Takkalki, Lokesh Sharma and Dhan Singh Choudhury are the other five accused against whom charges have been dropped besides Sadhvi.

The agency also said during investigation that it has been established that no offence is attracted in this case under the Maharashtra Control of Crimes Act (MCOCA), in which any statement given before a SP level officer is admissible as an evidence.

“In furtherance of same, the confessional statements recorded under provisions of MCOC Act by ATS Mumbai have not been relied up on by the NIA in submitting the present Final report,” the agency said in its chargesheet.

Lt Col Purohit and nine others will now be tried for charges including murder and conspiracy under the provisions of anti-terror law UAPA, IPC, Arms Act and Explosives Substance Act.

Director General of NIA Sharad Kumar told reporters today there was no dilution in the case.

Asked about the stand taken by the agency in the past when it had opposed the bail plea of Sadhvi and others even in the Supreme Court, he said “till our investigation was not complete, we had to go by the probe done by the ATS. Now that we have completed the investigations, we have submitted our final report (chargesheet)”.

The chargesheet was today submitted by public prosecutor Geeta Godambe before Special Judge S D Tekale here.

Special Public Prosecutor in the case Avinash Rasal said he was not informed about the filing of the chargesheet (by the NIA). “I am hurt and I may resign from the case”, Rasal said.

The Congress attacked the NIA decision to drop charges against Sadhvi Praygya and five others besides diluting the case against Lt Col and nine other accused.

Senior leader Digvijay Singh said “as I had predicted BJP and RSS have started the process of saving the Sangh Activists involved in Terror Cases.”

“Was the DG of NIA given extension for this?” he asked.

Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju dismissed the allegation saying government does not interfere in the investigation by the agencies. “We allow agencies to work independently,” he said.

Rajan unfit to be RBI Guv, should be removed: Subramanian Swamy

May 12, 2016 by Nasheman

subramanian swamy

New Delhi: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy today suggested that Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan be removed from the post as he was responsible for “unemployment and collapse” of industrial activity.

“In my opinion, RBI Governor is not appropriate for the country. I don’t want to speak much about him. He has hiked interest rates in the garb of controlling inflation that has damaged the country,” he told reporters in Parliament House.

The Governor’s actions have “led to collapse of industry and rise of unemployment in the economy”, he said. “The sooner he is sent back to Chicago, the better it would be.”

Rajan is the on-leave Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

After assuming charge as RBI governor in September 2013, Rajan gradually raised the short-term lending rate from 7.25 per cent to 8 per cent and had retained the high rates throughout 2014.

He kept the rates high, citing inflationary concerns despite intense pressure from the Finance Ministry and the industry for softening them with a view to boosting growth.

The Governor began the process of lowering the rates in January 2015 and since then it has come down by 1.50 per cent to 6.50 per cent.
