Modi unlikely to attend Art of Living event

New Delhi: Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the Art of Living’s mega World Culture Festival organised by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Security concerns are being reportedly cited as the reason for Modi’s nonattendance.

According to news reports, the Special Protection Group, which provides security to the Prime Minister, has cited security concerns.

This agency reportedly fears a major stampede as there are no proper plans for emergency evacuation of the place.

The event is yet to get security, traffic, fire, and structural safety clearances. According to police officials, several issues were raised with the organisers but there was a serious lack of coordination.

He was scheduled to inaugurate the event on February 11.

Bangladesh court upholds death sentence

Dhaka: The top court upheld a death sentence on Tuesday imposed by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal on a leader of an Islamist political party for killing a freedom fighter during the 1971 war of independence.

In a short order read out by Chief Justice Surenda Kumar Sinha, the appellate division of the Supreme Court acquitted Mir Quasem Ali – a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami – of three other charges, including another offence that also carried the death penalty.

The court, however, upheld the convictions and sentences in six other cases.

So far, the International Crimes Tribunal – established in 2010 to prosecute those alleged to have committed war crimes during the bloody conflict with Pakistan – has convicted 24 people. Most convicted are leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, which in 1971 supported the military activities of the Pakistan military to stop Bangladesh’s secession.

Four men have now been executed.

“The appellate division has passed this judgment properly after scrutinising the facts, documents, materials and evidence in the court,” one of the prosecutors, Ran Das Gupta, told Al Jazeera. “The inspiration of the people has been fulfilled by this judgment.”

Ali’s family questioned the ruling.

“The evidence presented against Mir Quasem Ali was self-contradictory and insufficient for a conviction,” said Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem, Ali’s son. “Where the conviction itself has no basis, upholding of the death sentence is a travesty of justice.”

Lead defence lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain said, “The judgment of the highest court of the law cannot be questioned. We will leave it to history.”

He added once the full written judgment containing the legal reasoning is published, the defence lawyers will consider whether to seek a review. Ali will be hanged within months unless a review reverses the ruling, or if he’s granted clemency.

MN Nahid Hossain, who came to the court to observe the proceedings, said “the whole country is satisfied with the judgment”.

The International Crimes Tribunal had ruled in its judgment in November 2014 that during the war Mir Quasem Ali was a leader of a pro-Pakistan militia, known as the Al Badr, and was in charge of a torture centre located at Dalim hotel in Chittagong.

The defence argued during Ali’s appeal that the prosecution’s own documents showed from the beginning of November 1971, when all the offences for which Ali was convicted are alleged to have taken place, the Jamaat leader was in the capital, Dhaka.

The tribunal and executions have divided Bangladesh and plunged the South Asian nation into its worst political crisis in years.

Bengaluru: In yet another rape shocker reported on Woman’s Day, a 36-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three men, including husband of a GP member, at HSR layout police station limits in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

The woman, resident of E Krishnappa Colony, in her complaint said that the trio forcefully entered her house and raped her in front her adolescent son and even filmed the incident.

Santhosh Reddy, husband of a local GP member and two others were taken into custody by the police, following a complaint.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today agreed to hear tomorrow a plea filed by a consortium of 17 PSU banks seeking a direction that industrialist Vijay Mallya be restrained from leaving India.

“List it for hearing tomorrow,” a bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice U U Lalit said, when Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for PSU banks, mentioned the matter for urgent hearing.

Rohatgi said that the plea has been moved by 17 banks, including State Bank of India, against Mallya whose various firms have taken loan from them.

He also said that the dues run into thousands of crores.

Govt was forced to listen to people: Rahul Gandhi on EPF tax withdrawal

New Delhi: As the government rolled back the controversial proposal to tax EPF withdrawal, Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday mounted a fresh attack on it, saying the attempt to tax the safety net of the middle class was “morally” wrong.

The Congress Vice President, in a series of tweets, said the government was forced to listen to people and roll back the “patently unfair” tax on EPF.

“Finally the Govt was forced to listen to people and roll back the patently unfair tax on EPF.

“But the attempt to tax the safety net of millions of hard working middle class people was morally wrong and shows this Govt’s anti-ppl mindset (sic)”, he said on the micro-blogging site.

In the face of all round attack, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday completely rolled back the controversial proposal.

He made a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha during which he also announced withdrawal of imposing monetary limit for contribution, of employers to provident and superannuation fund of Rs 1.5 lakh for taking tax benefit.

Terming as “big victory” for people of the country the roll back of the proposal, Congress said Modi once again “quickly and meekly” caved into the pressure exerted by Rahul Gandhi.

Congress spokesman Sanjay Jha tweeted “Modi, ONCE AGAIN, quickly/ meekly caves in to pressure exerted by @OfficeOfRG, fighting for the common man. #EPF(sic)”.

Party’s chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala termed it as a “big victory” for people of the country.

“Modi government was forced to withdraw the anti-people measure in the wake of nationwide protests of the salaried class. It is a big victory of people (sic),” he said on the micro-blogging site.

Bengaluru: Thousands of dead fish were washed ashore today at Ulsoor lake, a popular boating site here, raising concerns about water pollution in the city.

Residents living in and around the lake were in for a shock as they found the fish heaped around, raising unbearable stink in the water body.

Several residents, who complained about the stink, said sewage from the drain flowing into the lake due to a breach in a bund had depleted oxygen levels causing the large fish kill and authorities concerned had done nothing despite complaints.

“We are not surprised…we have been warning authorities from the last two years..sewage water is getting mixed with the lake water due to a breach in a bund..,” a resident said.

A tourism spot, Ulsoor lake had been choked with water hyacinth in recent years, with government launching clean-up efforts.

The incident comes even as there is a growing concern by environmentalists over polluted lakes, exemplified by the thick froth and flames from the Yamlur lake that caused ripples in the city last year.

The cause for the large fish kill was not known.

India overpower Bangladesh to win Asia Cup

Mirpur: Delhi lads Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli led the charge as India won the Asia Cup, outclassing Bangladesh by eight wickets in the final at the Sher-e-Bangladesh National Stadium here on Sunday evening.

Coming together after India had got off to a poor start, Dhawan and Kohli produced a 94-run partnership as the visitors overhauled the 121-run target in 13.5 overs.

Dhawan, who has been a flop throughout the tournament, finally found his touch when it mattered most, scoring 60 runs off 44 balls with nine boundaries and a six.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 41 runs off 28 balls with five boundaries. India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni added the finishing touch with 20 runs off just six deliveries, with one hit to the ropes and two sixes.

Pacer Al-Amin Hossain (1/30) gave Bangladesh some early hope by dismissing Rohit Sharma early. Chasing a tricky target in front of a packed stadium rooting for the hosts, Rohit probably found the pressure too much to handle as he edged one that was moving slightly away to Soumya Sarkar at first slip.

But that was one of the few moments of joy that the Bangladesh players and the capacity home crowd could find as Kohli and Dhawan came together to pull the visitors out of trouble.

The Delhi duo kept the required run rate within manageable limits with regular hits to the fence and some excellent running between the wickets.

It needed a superb effort in the field by Sarkar off Taskin Ahmed’s (1/14)bowling to see the back of Dhawan. The Delhi batsman attempted a square drive off a full toss, but Sarkar dived to his right to pluck the ball inches off the ground.

But by then, India were well on the road to victory and Dhoni strode in to finish off the job with some trademark power-packed hits.

Earlier, Mohammad Mahmudullah produced some lower order fireworks as Bangladesh posted 125/5 in 15 overs.

Walking in with Bangladesh in trouble at 75/5, the right-hander proceeded to hit two boundaries and an equal number of sixes in his 13-ball innings to remain unbeaten on 33.

Sabbir Rahman gave him crucial support from the other end with 32 runs from 29 balls. The duo produced a 45-run partnership to help the hosts to a competitive total.

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah (1/13) and Ashish Nehra (1/33) made good use of the seam friendly conditions to remove the Bangladesh openers early on.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who opened the Indian bowling, had figures of 1/14 while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/25) also bagged a wicket.

Bangladesh had a decent start with 11 runs in the first two overs before Bumrah pegged back the run rate with just three runs in the third over.

The Bangladesh openers tried to push up the run rate with Sarkar smashing two boundaries in the next over. But Nehra struck back immediately as he mistimed the last ball of the over while playing across the line to offer an easy catch to Hardik Pandya at mid-off.

Bumrah then piled on the pressure by trapping Tamim Iqbal leg before.

With both openers gone, Shakib al Hasan and Rahman set about trying to rebuild the innings.

They were cautious in the initial stages before trying to break the shackles with some big hits. The duo added 34 runs between them before Shakib was caught by Bumrah at short fine leg while trying to sweep Ashwin.

Bangladesh suffered back to back jolts in the 12th over when Mushfiqur Rahim was found short of his crease while attempting a second run, while Mashrafe Mortaza holed out to deep midwicket in the very next ball as Bangladesh reeled at 75/5.

Mahmudullah then provided the crucial big hits later on to help the hosts to a strong finish.

Bengaluru: Strand Life Sciences, a global leader in precision medicine diagnostics announced the publication of a landmark study in the Journal of Human Genetics in a paper titled, “Detection of high frequency of mutations in a breast and/or ovarian cancer cohort: implications of embracing a multi-gene panel in molecular diagnosis in India.” http://www.nature.com/jhg/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/jhg20164a.html.

Breast and ovarian cancers are among the most frequently diagnosed forms of hereditary cancers, and leading cause of death in India. According to GLOBOCAN, 145,000 new cancer cases were diagnosed, and 70,000 deaths occurred in India in 20121. The burden of breast cancer on the Indian healthcare system has been steadily increasing, emphasizing the need for a cost-effective method for early detection of these cancers.

As part of this large study, 141 unrelated patients and families with breast or ovarian cancer were tested for mutations in 13 genes associated with high inherited risk, using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). 36.2% of the cases showed clear inherited risk, with the number going up to 52% for cases with a family history of breast cancer. Both numbers were higher than expected. Most were on account of mutations in the commonly tested BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. However, 28% of the mutations detected were in other genes, indicating that Strand’s multi-gene germline cancer test provides increased diagnostic sensitivity, and possibly better patient outcomes, as compared to previous approaches of testing single genes or just the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In addition, 37% of the mutations detected have not been reported earlier in patients, indicating novel variation in the Indian population. These trends continue to hold on more than 300 further cases tested after the study was submitted.

These findings are important for patient care, as breast and ovarian cancer patients with a strong inherited risk, and their related family, can take steps for cancer prevention and increased surveillance. Recent and upcoming promising developments in systemic therapy for such patients might also yield better outcomes2. These findings also help in growing the knowledge base of genetic variants in the Indian population.

Dr. Ramesh Sarin, MBBS, MS, FRCS, a leader in the field of genetic testing and a Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, said “Genetic testing using multi-gene panels will potentially be helpful in developing effective strategies for early detection, prevention, and better management of HBOC, which will have a positive impact on healthcare in India.”

North Korea has pledged a “sacred war of justice for reunification” including a nuclear strike against the United States, saying joint military exercises by Seoul and Washington were being carried out to prepare for an invasion.

South Korean and United States troops began large-scale military exercises on Monday in an annual test of their defences against North Korea, which called the drills “nuclear war moves” and threatened to respond with an “all-out offensive”.

South Korea said the exercises would be the largest ever following North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch last month that triggered a United Nations Security Council resolution and tough new sanctions.

Isolated North Korea has rejected criticism of is nuclear and rocket programmes, even from old ally China, and last week leader Kim Jong-un ordered his country to be ready to use nuclear weapons in the face of what he sees as growing threats from enemies.

The joint US and South Korean military command said it had notified North Korea of “the non-provocative nature of this training” involving about 17,000 American troops and more than 300,000 South Koreans.

South Korea’s defence ministry said it had seen no sign of any unusual military activity by the North.

Still, it issued a statement on Monday warning the North that it “should immediately stop its reckless behaviour that would drive them to their own destruction”.

“If North Korea ignores our warning and conduct provocations, our military will relentlessly respond and we warn that North Korea will be held fully responsible for any situation leading to North Korea’s reckless provocation,” the statement said.

North Korea’s National Defence Commission said the North Korean army and people would “realise the greatest desire of the Korean nation through a sacred war of justice for reunification”, in response to any attack by US and South Korean forces.

Its response would include nuclear weapons and their use against the United States, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a statement on Monday. 

“We have a military operation plan of our style to liberate South Korea and strike the US mainland,” the KCNA report said, also adding a “powerful nuclear strike means targeting the US imperialist aggressor forces bases in the Asia-Pacific region”.

The North, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), as it is officially known, routinely issues threats of military action in response to the annual exercises that it sees as preparation for war against it.

The threat on Monday was in line with the usual rhetoric it uses to denounce the drills.

The latest UN sanctions imposed on North Korea were drafted by the US and China as punishment for its nuclear test and satellite launch, which the US and others say was really a test of ballistic missile technology.

South Korea and the US militaries began talks on Friday on the deployment of an advanced anti-missile Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system in South Korea.
