Bengaluru, 19th February 2021: SIBM Bengaluru reopens its campus and welcomes students back after 11 months.

As establishments across the country recuperate from the ill-effects of the ongoing pandemic, business schools are also taking the cautious decision of opening up campuses and calling back the students. The Serampore Initiative

The Serampore initiative of the National Museum of Denmark was established in 2008 with the aim of identifying remains of Indo-Danish history in Serampore and restoration of selected buildings from this period. Aero India, 2021 – ExclusiveIn-Conversation : One from the diary of a Test & Display Pilot

 Lately Defence minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 13th edition of Aero India – the marquee aerospace and defence business event – in Bengaluru. The Covid compliant premier air show commenced from 3rd of Feb till 5th of Feb 2021 at the Yelahanka AFS.

Ensuing, the biennial event every edition of Aero India enthralls the national and international Defence eminences, Dignitaries, Exhibitors, and Visitors on-ground with a magnificent line-up of air displays on all the days of the event. This year it was no exception to the said ritual all along the skyline of Bengaluru.

As an attendee to the event, gazing at the spectacular displays up above the ground so high a thought evoked in my mind. As in, how much effort and background work does go into the preparation of such impeccable shows (air displays) of human precision (Test/ Display Pilots).


On that note, I thought to seize a few moments of conversation at the tarmac this year with one such meticulous human soul, who relentlessly affirmed that the display or test pilots are a breed apart.

Here are the passages, from my candid conversation with Wng Cdr. Subhash P John, IAF Veteran (VSM) & Deputy Chief Test Pilot (RW) Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, India.

The bonhomie with his remarkable maneuvers delineated the efficacy of HAL’s – LCH (Light Combat Helicopter) as a platform at Aero India, 2021. Wng Cdr. John has been participating in the flying display at the Aero India since 2009 and has flown Rudra helicopters (weaponized version of Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), ALH-Dhruv, Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and others.


Our conversation started, while I tried understanding the basic difference between a normal pilot, test pilot and the display pilots from the man himself.  Wng Cdr. John subtly explained it to me, that the Test & the Display pilots are two different types altogether. And the factors that he finds extremely crucial for a Display pilots is – Discipline. However, there are many other common grounds that stand the same for all the three types, which I shall cover as you move ahead reading this conversation.

Discipline

Describing on the Discipline bit, Wng Cdr. John said, “We (Display Pilots) are given the freedom to do a lot of things. So, we try to stay within the physical limits of our aircrafts. We as display pilots always go beyond the typical limits that a normal test or fighter pilot undertakes. We go beyond that”

Sheer Focus

“It is imperative for us to have a lot of focus. It is in a very short span on time up in the air, one thing moves to the next. There is no time for us to think, and then act” he added.

Flying Skills

As expressed, by Wng Cdr. John another key aspect that he believes extremely crucial for a Display pilot is the flying skills of oneself. He said, “Almost all of us have the same level. So, these are the three things that goes into selection process of a Display pilot as a participant to any show”  

As we further moved deep into our conversation, Wng Cdr. John expressed, “Now, once a pilot is selected for a display, he or she needs to build a routine, the routine in the sense that, the maneuvers have been planned in such a way that somebody who is witnessing it enjoys it, that is supposed to grab their attention, they have to be safe that is always the utmost requirement and they should flow into one another. So, as you have seen the displacements executed by all of us here, it is not an individual’s act, it is a collective act which encapsulates as one, in form of a display for the spectators”  

The synchronization amongst the pilots has often been a delight among the spectators who descend at the Air Force Station biennially to watch the grit, discipline, and daredevil stunts of the air warriors.

If Synchronization & Trust are two important facets in the life of a Test / Display pilot ?

Wng Cdr. John underlines on this front while expressing his chain of thoughts, “True. Yes, they absolutely stand significant for our lives. Perhaps, that is why you would usually find us, the pilots sticking around together very often. Because, when our life depends on the other person’s actions, it is critical for us to establish the bonds of brotherhood amongst ourselves. Especially as teams when we initiate to execute an air display”

Emphasizing further on it, he added, “Possibly most of the things that we do, we all listen and discuss amongst ourselves. So that, it builds up a lot of human relations, in fact most of the time we know what the other person is thinking. The bond is that strong. Human relations help, for instance most of the time we know another person under the pilot would react necessarily to any surface aggression. That is important, but there is not much time for us to discuss. It must be an immediate instinctive reaction in favor to resolve any such adverse situations”


‘Brotherhood’ is an integral factor among the aviators that develops this bond and stitches them together during any air displays. Test pilots volunteer for the services and only a few can make it through the course. It involves risk as the aircrafts and helicopters are pushed through envelopes to ensure that the machine is safe before being put for the operational purpose into any Defence mechanism.

Is it too taxing to undertake multiple sorties on a single day at any aero show as a Display pilot ?

Out of curiosity when I asked him this, Wng Cdr. John, helped me with his cordial explanation, “ When we have a display scheduled, we generally keep all the other activities before the display. Even if we do something like that, usually about half an hour before the display we take a pause and strategize what and how we would execute it up in the air”

If I talk about myself, I still sit for 20 minutes to revise before every act of air display. As I have been doing it for so many years, the time is less. Otherwise, a new pilot would take at least a month to prepare for a flying display. And a lot of us do the same for their respective actions of how they going to execute it, so we all go through that.

As you see there is no time to think it must be very set. It is advanced, it is like a dance performance, and must go from one step to the other, there is no way you can stop. It is a balance in motion.

Whilst understanding the nuances from him, I inquired as in how many display sorties does, he prefers to undertake as a Display pilot. Wng Cdr. John was humble enough to throw some light on that front as well in context to Aero India, 2021, “I do not do many, because morning I do the display. And after that I do all the ground demonstrations for the customers, but I do not stretch myself do another display by afternoon”

“There is a certain limit of anything, you should not over do the fatigue. The display is for 6 minutes, 20 minutes. I prepare for it, 15 minutes to walk, start-up, Take-off another 6 minutes to 4 minutes. So, it is about 45 minutes approximately in total”

This 45 minute I cycle mentally, and not supposed to be in my normal senses. The reactions are faster. So, it is a tough, elevated level of 45 minutes. So, you cannot repeat too often. The most I can think of is if I am not doing anything one in the morning followed by another one by noon. But if I have some other commitments at work just one in the morning.

Ensuing, the engrossing discussions we concluded our conversation on a lighter note, talking about the food habits that the test and display pilots follow and how sleep time is extremely important for the pilots to push themselves beyond their limits to prove themselves flawless. Every time and always.

Randeep Surjewala meets CM Ibrahim, hopes to stall defection to JDS

BENGALURU: In a bid to retain MLC CM Ibrahim in the Congress fold, the party’s General Secretary and state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala personally went to meet the senior leader after consulting Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and KPCC President D K Shivakumar. Last month, Ibrahim met JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda along with former CM H D Kumaraswamy, invoking the displeasure of Congress leaders. Kumaraswamy had visited Ibrahim, after which the two had visited Gowda. 

Ibrahim is a Congress MLC, and there was talk that he would switch sides and be made JDS working president. JDS was also interested in getting back Ibrahim, who had served as Civil Aviation minister in 1996. It is no secret that the JDS got a negligible number of Muslim votes, and their effort to rope in Ibrahim is to try and regain votes in certain pockets where the party lost. It is an open secret that Ibrahim was sending signals about his unhappiness with Congress leadership. He used to be seen with Siddaramaiah regularly, but this was not the case in the past few months.

Ibrahim reportedly told Surjewala, “I have nothing against anyone but I have issues against certain processes, which need to be addressed.’’ Surjewala assured him he would convey his concerns to the high command. The Congress, too, is not ready to take any community’s support for granted, and is especially cautious about the minority issue in the backdrop of Youth Congress president aspirant Mohammed Nalapad’s disqualification after the election, and talk of certain leaders’ malafide intentions.

Minority votes are not the monopoly of the Congress, which is wary of the SDPI  and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen threat. This new belligerence on the part of the JDS by trying to rope in a strong Muslim leader may not be to Congress’ advantage.    

Shah promises ministry for fishermen

KOLKATA: Continuing his attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over a number of issues including not allowing Hindu religious festivals to political violence claiming lives BJP workers, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday made a slew of promises aimed at wooing the voters. These included facilities for fisherman and government jobs for women.

Addressing a rally at Namkhana in South 24 Parganas, Shah said if the BJP comes to power, a ministry will be set up for fishermen and 33 per cent of government jobs will be reserved for women. “Fishermen have to bribe Trinamool Congress’s musclemen to venture into the sea.

After overthrowing the TMC government, their plight will not exist. We will set up a dedicated ministry for the betterment of fishermen. Namkhana will become a district and the area will be converted into an integrated fishery zone,’’ Shah said.

He also announced a beneficiary scheme, which will be implemented if BJP rules the state. “Like the scheme for farmers, fishermen will get an assistance of `6,000 every year and the sum will be credited to their bank accounts,” he said.

The delta region of the district has a sizable number of people who depend on fishing for a livelihood. To win their support, Shah had lunch at the house of a fisherman. Eyeing consolidation of Hindu votes, Shah accused Mamata of not allowing festivals like Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja. “Shouldn’t Durga Puja take place in West Bengal? Court’s permission is needed for that.

Shouldn’t Saraswati Puja take place here? She (Mamata) has stopped it. Didi, Bengal knows you stopped Saraswati pujan in schools.” Shah flagged off the fifth and final Parivartan Yatra from Namkhana. In the morning, he visited Bharat Sevashram Sangha in Kolkata and went to Kapil Muni Ashram in Gangasagar.

PM Modi’s proposals on medical emergencies get support of 10 nations including Pakistan: Sources

NEW DELHI:Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s five specific suggestions to boost cooperation among nations in India’s immediate and extended neighbourhood to deal with future medical emergencies were supported at a virtual workshop on Thursday by health experts from 10 countries, including Pakistan, authoritative sources said.

India on Thursday organised the workshop on management of COVID-19 as well as its experience and way forward for health officials and experts from all eight member nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Mauritius and Seychelles.

In his address, Modi suggested that the countries should consider creating a special visa scheme for doctors and nurses so that medical personnel can travel quickly within the region during health emergencies and that the civil aviation ministries can coordinate on a regional air ambulance agreement for medical contingencies.

“Can we create a regional platform for collating, compiling and studying data about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines among our populations? Can we similarly create a regional network for promoting technology-driven epidemiology, for preventing future pandemics?” he said.

Modi further suggested sharing of successful public health policies and schemes among the countries.

The sources said all the countries, including Pakistan, supported the prime minister’s five proposals.

They said the experts proposed a structured discussion for regional cooperation on the proposals to take them forward.

The sources said all the participants agreed that there was a need for cooperation on regional basis to fight pandemics.

They said all the countries except Pakistan thanked India and Prime Minister Modi for India’s supplies of coronavirus vaccines and earlier assistance of various medicines, medical equipment and training of personnel.

Pakistan has not received coronavirus vaccines from India.

Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs said India provided over 229 lakh doses of coronavirus vaccines to various countries, out of which 64 lakh doses have been supplied as grant assistance and 165 lakh doses were sent on a commercial basis.

In a major announcement, India on January 19 said it will send COVID-19 vaccines under grant assistance to several countries, including Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Mauritius under grant assistance.

Covid-19 Update India 13,193 new cases, 97 deaths

NEW DELHI: Daily cases of COVID-19 in the country climbed to over 13,000 after 19 days taking India’s tally of cases to 1,09,63,394, while the recoveries surged to   1,06,67,741, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday.

A total of 13,193 new cases were registered in a span of 24 hours.

The death toll increased to 1,56,111 with 97 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,06,67,741 which translates to a national COVID-19 recovery rate of 97.30 per cent and the case fatality rate stands at 1.42 per cent.

The COVID-19 active caseload remained below 1.5 lakh.

There are 1,39,542 active cases of coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 1.27 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past  60 lakh on September 28,  70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29,  90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

Mumbai Indians picked Arjun Tendulkar purely on a skill basis: Mahela Jayawardene

Arjun, who is the son of former legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 20 lakhs in the mini-auction of IPL on Thursday.

CHENNAI: Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene said that the side picked Arjun Tendulkar purely on the basis of his skill sets.

Arjun, who is the son of former legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 20 lakhs in the mini-auction of IPL on Thursday.

Jayawardene said the stint with Mumbai Indians will be a learning process for Arjun. The former Sri Lanka skipper also said the 21-year-old left-arm medium-pacer will learn and evolve his game with time.

“We’ve looked at it purely on a skill basis. I mean, there is going to be a big tag on his head because of Sachin. But, luckily, he’s a bowler, not a batsman. So I think Sachin will be very proud if he could bowl like Arjun,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Jayawardene as saying.

“I think it’s going to be a learning process for Arjun. He just started playing for Mumbai, and now the franchise. He will learn the ropes; he will evolve. He’s still young. A very focused young man,” he further said.

“We have to give him time and hopefully not put a lot of pressure on him either. Just let him evolve and work his way up, and that’s what we’re there to help him to do,” Jayawardene added.

Arjun was also the Mumbai Indians net bowler during the IPL 2020 and was the last player to be bought in the IPL auction on Thursday.

“I have spent a lot of time in the nets, trying to teach him some tricks of the trade, he is a hardworking kid, he is keen on learning, it is an exciting part. The added pressure of being Sachin Tendulkar’s son will always be on him, it is something he needs to live with, the environment of the team will help him. It will help him become a good cricketer, how many times a youngster gets picked in the auction and everyone is talking about him, he has to prove himself and he has to show everyone he has the goods,” said Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan during a virtual press conference.

In the players’ auction held on Thursday, defending champions Mumbai Indians also picked up, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jimmy Neesham, Yudhvir Charak, Marco Jansen, and Piyush Chawla.

When asked about acquiring all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, Zaheer said: “He is someone who has capabilities of a good all-rounder, it is all about timing, we have timed it well. Neesham has the capabilities and that is what we all think, hence the opportunity. It is all about timing, it is all about getting a chance to prove yourself.”

BJP will end cut-money culture, bring development in Bengal if voted to power: Shah

KAKDWIP: Alleging that the TMC government has introduced a “cut-money” culture in West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the BJP’s fight is to end it and take the state to the path of development if voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls.

He said the BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ is not for changing a chief minister, an MLA or a minister but ending infiltration and transforming West Bengal into a developed state.

“This ‘Parivartan Yatra’ is not for changing a CM, or a minister. It is for ending infiltration and also for the transformation of Bengal. You vote for the BJP. Leave alone illegal immigrants, not even a bird from across the border will be allowed to enter the state,” Shah said addressing a rally here.

He also spoke about the killings of BJP workers and warned that the perpetrators will be thrown behind bars.

The union minister said the BJP is ready to take on the “goons” and the “syndicates” of the ruling TMC.

Speaking on the controversy over the ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan, Shah said, “Bengal CM gets angry at the slogan due to her appeasement politics.

” Banerjee had on January 23 declined to speak at an event to celebrate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary where “Jai Shri Ram” slogans were raised in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shah also slammed the TMC dispensation in the state for alleged corruption in disbursing ‘Amphan’ relief funds.

“The central government had sent relief funds after ‘Amphan’ cyclone, the money was siphoned off by the TMC leaders.

If voted to power, we will probe into this corruption.

We will form a task force for saving lives from cyclones and environmental disasters,” he said.

Shah also reached out to the West Bengal government employees and said the 7th Pay Commission will be implemented in the state if the saffron party is voted to power.

“The financial condition of Bengal is so bad that the state government employees don’t get the benefits of the 7th Pay Commission. If voted to power we would implement it in the state,” he said.
