Mixed response to Bharat Bandh in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The Bharat Bandh on Tuesday mostly saw mixed response in Karnataka. While the state capital saw thousands of farmers taking out a rally from Town Hall, rallies and protests were held in other districts. Several farmers’ organisations came out in support of the bandh called by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene as part of the all-India bandh to protest againt the reforms to farm laws by the Centre. Pro-Kannada organisations too backed the shutdown. 

The bandh disrupted normal life as businesses downed their shutters in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts although the response was mixed in Mandya district. Farmers, joined by Dalit and labour unions, stopped bus services, disrupting movement of long-distance buses from 7 am for an hour. Rallies, demonstrations and protests were also held in Mangaluru, Belagavi, Tumakuru, Vijayapura, hubballi-Dharwad, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Raichur, Bidar, hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Koppal, Kolar and Chikkaballapur.

Though there were demonstrations, the bandh call evoked poor response in hassan. State transport buses, private taxis and autorickshaws were on the roads as usual in the district. In Davanagere and Chitradurga, KSRTC and city bus services besides autorickshaws and cabs remained off the roads, but government offices and banks functioned normally. Crowds, were however, noticeably thinner. In Davanagere, protesters at Jayadeva Circle raised slogans against the Central government and burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for introducing the farm bills. In Chitradurga town, protesters took out a march and submitted a memorandum at the deputy commissioner’s office.

BENGALURU: Tuesday’s Bharat Bandh did not have a major impact on normal life in Bengaluru, but farmers — estimated to be around 10,000 from several organizations — took out rallies and held demonstrations at Town Hall and Mysore Bank Circle, affecting traffic across the Central Business District of the state capital. The protesters blocked Sheshadri Road, Town Hall and Mysuru Bank Circle, shouting slogans against the Central government for enacting the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020.

While larger vegetable markets and the APMC yards remained shut in response to the bandh call, Bengaluru remained normal with shops and commercial establishments open in most parts of the city. 

KSRTC, BMTC and taxi services operated as usual around Majestic, Shanthinagar and Satellite bus stop on Mysuru road. While autorickshaws too plied, they were seen in much reduced numbers than otherwise. 

The police said no farmers were taken into preventive custody as the bandh remained peaceful in the city, and the authorities had made prior arrangements to allow demonstrations and protests only in specific areas like Freedom Park, Town Hall and Mysore Bank Circle, and had diverted traffic accordingly for the purpose. However, that did not stop the protesters from blocking traffic on Sheshadri Road and the approach roads to Town Hall, which caused traffic congestion in the Central Business District.

Youth Congress members were seen approaching shop owners, especially in Shanthinagar area, appealing to them to down their shutters to express their solidarity with the farmers.Meanwhile, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar walked with the farmers to extend his support and told the protesters that the Congress party would always stand with the farmers. 

Around 5,000 to 10,000 farmers are likely to converge on Bengaluru on Wednesday morning to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha, even as the winter session of state legislature is on since Monday. Traffic may be affected at KR Circle, Mysuru Bank Circle and Sheshadri Road, as farmers plan to surround Vidhana Soudha after the rally begins from Freedom Park.

Madikeri: Karnataka Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene members on Tuesday hosted a protest rally at Thimmaiah Circle in Madikeri. The rally, however, was denied permission by the Madikeri Town police. A minor rift broke out between the protesting farmers and the policemen, as the latter barred the farmers from creating a human chain. The situation was, however, resolved after the farmers agreed to the cops’ request to not block roads.

Ghazvanid and Noida’s air quality remained “severe” for the fifth day in a row while it stayed “very poor” in Faridabad and Gurgaon, according to a government agency data on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: Ghaziabad and Noida’s air quality remained “severe” for the fifth day in a row while it stayed “very poor” in Faridabad and Gurgaon, according to a government agency data on Tuesday.

Presence of pollutant PM 2.5 and PM 10 also remained high in the five immediate neighbours of Delhi, according to the air quality index (AQI) maintained by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

According to the index, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

The average 24-hour AQI at 4 pm on Tuesday was 424 in Ghaziabad, 407 in Noida and 405 in Greater Noida, 382 in Faridabad and 347 in Gurgaon, according to CPCB’s Sameer app. On Monday, it was 438 in Ghaziabad, 422 in both Noida and Greater Noida, 388 in Faridabad and 357 in Gurgaon.

India’s COVID-19 Update caseload at 3.78 lakh, continues to decline

NEW DELHI: The ongoing trend of contraction of India’s total active COVID-19 cases continues as the active caseload of the country stands at 3,78,909. The share of active cases in the total positive cases has further shrunk to 3.89 per cent.

The daily recoveries exceeding the daily new cases have ensured a total net reduction of the active caseload. A net decline of 4,957 cases has been recorded in the total active cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

India has reported more daily recoveries than the daily new cases during the past 24 hours. While 32,080 persons were found positive in the past 24 hours, India has registered 36,635 new recoveries during the same period.

India’s total cumulative tests are nearing 15 crores (14,98,36,767). Keeping in line with its commitment to conduct more than one million tests every day, 10,22,712 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. The testing capacity of the country has grown to 15 lakh tests per day.

India’s testing infrastructure has seen a significant boost with 2,220 labs across the country.

An average of more than 10 lakh tests conducted daily has ensured that the cumulative positivity rate is sustained at low levels and is presently following a downward trajectory.

The cumulative national Positivity Rate stands at 6.50 per cent today. The daily positivity rate is just 3.14 per cent. Higher volumes of testing eventually lead to a low Positivity Rate.

Nineteen States and Union Territories have a weekly positivity rate more than the national average.

Below are the States with the highest cumulative testing along with their respective positivity rates. Uttar Pradesh has the highest cumulative testing with more than 2 crore tests. Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are among the States with the highest cumulative testing with more than 1 crore tests.

The Recovery Rate has also increased to 94.66 per cent. Total Recoveries have surpassed 92 lakhs today (92,15,581).

76.37 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States/UTs.

Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of single-day recoveries with 6,365 newly recovered cases. 4,735 people recovered in Kerala in the past 24 hours followed by 3,307 in Delhi.

As many as 75.11 per cent of the new cases are from 10 States and UTs. Kerala continues to report the highest daily new cases at 5,032. It is followed by Maharashtra with 4,026 new cases.

402 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours.

Ten States and UT account for 76.37 per cent of new deaths. Delhi saw the maximum casualties (57). Maharashtra and West Bengal follow with 53 and 49 daily deaths, respectively.

Kriti Sanon tests positive for COVID-19

MUMBAI: Actor Kriti Sanon on Wednesday said she has tested positive for coronavirus and is currently under home quarantine.

The 30-year-old actor had recently returned to Mumbai after wrapping up the shoot for her upcoming film with her “Bareilly Ki Barfi” co-star Rajkummar Rao in Chandigarh, following which there were reports she had contracted the disease.

In a statement on Twitter, Sanon said she is following the advice of doctors and officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

“I’d like to inform everyone that I have tested positive for COVID-19. There’s absolutely nothing to worry as I’m feeling fine and have quarantined myself as per BMC and my doctor’s advice,” the actor

Sanon said she will get back to work as soon as she tests negative and thanked her fans for their wishes.

“I’m gonna ride this tide, rest it out and resume work soon. Till then, I’m reading all the warm wishes and they seem to be working. Be safe guys, the pandemic hasn’t gone yet,” she added.

Earlier, the cast of Karan Johar-backed “Jug Jugg Jeeyo”, including Varun Dhawan, Neetu Kapoor, Maniesh Paul and director Raj Mehta also tested positive for COVID-19 while shooting for the film in Chandigarh.

Farmer unions reject govt’s draft proposal on agri laws, to continue agitation

Thousands of farmers stayed put at Delhi borders on Wednesday to press for repeal of the agree marketing laws.

Farmers unions on Wednesday rejected the union government’s draft of proposals, Darshan Pal, President of Krantikari Kisan Union said.

“We will block the Delhi-Jaipur highway by 12th December. On 14th December, BJP offices will be gheraoed, protest demonstrations will be held in many parts of the country. We are also giving a call to farmers from other parts of the country to reach Delhi,” the leaders added.

The protesting farmers have also decided to boycott corporate giants Ambani and Adani.

Thousands of farmers stayed put at Delhi borders on Wednesday to press for repeal of the agri marketing laws.

A meeting called by Home Minister Amit Shah ended in failure on Tuesday night as farmer leaders rejected the government’s offer to amend new farm laws, saying they would settle for nothing less than the scrapping of the legislations.

The sixth round of talks between the government and farmer unions to end the protests on Delhi’s various borders, which was scheduled on Wednesday, has been cancelled.

Barricades around Hampi monuments to stop vandals

BALLARI: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has placed wooden barricades around the famous stone chariot at Vijaya Vittala Temple Complex in Hampi for protection. There have been several instances where tourists got too close to these monuments, with some going as far as touching them. To avoid the monument from getting damaged, the ASI placed the barricades around the heritage structure that was built in the 16th century. 

Besides the Stone Chariot, several other monuments in Hampi, including Ugra Narasimha and Saasive Kalu Ganesha, will be cordoned off in the next phase. In the past two years, Hampi has witnessed several incidents of vandalism, according to officials here. Officials from the ASI, Hampi circle, said that there were several complaints regarding unruly tourists getting too close to protected monuments. 

“Many times, tourists quarrel with security personnel over taking photographs by sitting or leaning on heritage structures. The idea is to minimise human intervention and preserve these structures for the future,” the official said. 

The official added that those who cross the barricades will be fined as per the rules. “The Central ASI had cleared the project to barricade important monuments in Hampi about six months ago. But due to the lockdown the work began only recently,” the official added. 

Local guides and photographers have welcomed the move. “Though the barricades obstruct the view of monuments it’s a necessary step. Tourists do not listen to the guards and get close to the monuments. The barricades will keep the important monuments safe” said a local photographer. 

Day after extending support to ‘Bharat Bandh’, Kejriwal meets protesting farmers at Singhu border

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday visited the Singhu border, where thousands of farmers are protesting against the Centre’s new farm laws, and reviewed arrangements made for them by the city government.

The visit comes a day after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) extended its support to the ”Bharat Bandh” called by protesting farmers on December 8.

Kejriwal was accompanied by his Cabinet ministers and some party MLAs during the brief visit to the protest venue on the Delhi-Haryana border.

“I checked the arrangements. We received a lot of pressure to allow the use of stadiums as temporary prisons but we did not give permission and I feel this helped the movement.

Since then our party MLAs and ministers have been involved in ensuring that farmers do not face any discomfort,” he said.

“We are working like ‘sewadar’. Here I have not come as a chief minister but as a ‘sewadaar’ to serve the farmers. It is our responsibility to support the farmers. I hope soon a solution is reached,” he told reporters.

Yuvraj Singh’s father backs sports stars returning awards to express solidarity with farmers

NEW DELHI: Yograj Singh, the father of cricketer Yuvraj Singh, on Monday, urged the Central Government to listen to the demands of the farmers and he also backed all sportsperson who are returning their awards in order to show support with the protesting farmers.

“Sportspersons returning award does not mean that they are defaming the award, it is their way to show their solidarity with the protesting farmers. Awards are earned by hard work of many years, it is not easy to get so if they are returning it, I back them. I am also with farmers, they are demanding the right thing,” he added.

Sportspersons of Punjab and Haryana have been returning their awards (Padma, Dronacharya, and Arjuna award ) in order to show solidarity with the farmers.

Boxer Vijender Singh, who joined the farmers’ agitation at the Singhu border (Haryana-Delhi border), on Sunday, had also said that he will return his Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award if the new agriculture laws are not withdrawn.

Addressing a gathering of protestors, Singh said, “I came here today as our big brother Punjab is here, so how can people of Haryana lag behind. If the government does not withdraw the black laws, I will return my Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award–the highest sporting honour of the nation.”

Amid the ongoing farmers’ protest, former national boxing coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu had also decided to return his Dronacharya Award to show solidarity with agitating farmers.

Thousands of farmers have gathered in and around Delhi to protest against the three farm laws, passed in the Monsoon Session of Parliament in September.

The farmers are protesting against the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. 

NDA ally Rashtriya Loktantrik Party extends support to farmers’ Bharat Bandh call

RLP convenor and MP Hanuman Beniwal made the announcement on Sunday.

Congress leader Sachin Pilot also supported the Bharat Bandh call, saying that all should raise their voice for their rights.

“Farmers struggling for their rights have called for a Bharat Bandh on December 8. We all should raise our voice for the rights of farmers,” Pilot said in a tweet.

“The unsuccessful dialogue between the central government and the farmers is a sign that the BJP wants to hollow out India’s agricultural foundation,” he added.

Talks between the government and protesting farmers remained inconclusive on Saturday even after five rounds of discussions as the union leaders stuck to their demand for the repeal of the new farm laws, forcing the Centre to call for another meeting on December 9 to resolve the deadlock.

The farmers are protesting against the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

Enacted in September, the three farm laws have been projected by the government as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the middlemen and allow farmers to sell anywhere in the country.

However, the protesting farmers have expressed apprehension that the new laws would pave the way for eliminating the safety cushion of Minimum Support Price and do away with the mandis, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates.

The Centre has maintained that MSP and Mandi mechanisms will stay.
