ED raids premises linked to Shiv Sena MLA in money-laundering case

MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided premises linked to Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik in Maharashtra on Tuesday in connection with a money-laundering case, official sources said.

They said the searches are being conducted by the central agency at 10 locations linked to Sarnaik in Thane and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

“The searches are being conducted on the Tops group (a company in the business of providing security) promoters and related people, including some politicians,” an official source said.

Sarnaik represents the Ovala-Majiwada constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

COVID-19 Update India climbs to 91.77 lakh with 37,975 new infections; death toll nears 1.35 lakh mark

NEW DELHI: India saw 37,975 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day taking the country’s COVID-19 caseload to 91.77 lakh, while the recoveries crossed 86 lakh, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 91,77,840 and the death toll climbed to 1,34,218 with 480 new fatalities, including 121 from the national capital alone, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of active cases remained below 5 lakh for the fourteenth consecutive day.

There are 4,38,667 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country as on date which comprises 4.78 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 86,04,955 pushing the national recovery rate to  93.76 per cent, while the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.46 per cent.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5.

It went past 50 lakh on September 16, 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, and surpassed 90 lakh on November 20.

According to the ICMR, over 13.36 crore samples have been tested up to November 23 with 10,99,545 samples being tested on Monday.

The 480 new fatalities include 121 from Delhi, 47 from West Bengal, 30 from Maharashtra, 28 from Haryana, 24 from Karnataka, 23 each from Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and  22 from Kerala.

A total of 1,34,218 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 46,653 from Maharashtra followed by 11,678 from Karnataka, 11,622 from Tamil Nadu, 8,512 from Delhi, 8,072 from West Bengal, 7,582 from Uttar Pradesh, 6,948 from Andhra Pradesh, 4,631 from Punjab and 3,876 from Gujarat.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

“Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of  Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

Schools, PU colleges to remain closed in Karnataka amid fears of second COVID-19 wave

BENGALURU: Less than a week after the higher education department opened colleges in Karnataka, the government decided to keep schools and pre university colleges closed in the state.

The decision was announced on Monday by primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar following the report of a technical committee which was constituted by the Chief Minister.

Kumar said apprehensions of a second wave of COVID-19 and the winter season being a major reason for the spread were among the committee’s reasons for keeping schools and PU colleges shut.

Addressing mediapersons, Kumar said there were contending perspectives during the discussions — one, that said schools should not open at all and another that highlighted the increase in social ills such as child labour and child marriage among government school children in rural areas.

“We will have to tackle social ills. Yet the technical advisory committee has given its decision and the most important aspect now is to save lives,” he added, saying the decisions were made keeping the welfare of children in mind.

The technical committee will convene in the third week of December to decide on a road ahead for the academic year, as the department is looking at a phased reopening first for older students — Class 8 and above.

Kumar said board students in Class 10 will have completed 100 percent of their syllabus in December — classes are taking place on state-run television channel Doordarshan Chandana.

There are 9,59,566 Class 10 students of the state, CBSE and ICSE boards and 5,70,126 pre university board students in the state.

Examination dates will be decided after another round of discussions among officials.

Principal Secretary of Department of Primary and Secondary Education Department SR Umashankar said besides the state’s initiatives of disseminating educational content on television, YouTube and (the now suspended) Vidyagama programme, private channels have also been approached.

Reliance’s Jio TV has come forward to freely broadcast educational content and a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed in this regard, he added.

Hospet: Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar on Sunday alleged the CBI was working at the behest of the BJP, days after he was summoned by the central agency in a disproportionate assets case against him.

The former minister claimed the BJP was trying to trap him through the Central Bureau of Investigation.

“The CBI is working at the behest of the BJP. Let them do whatever they want but I am working to strengthen the party,” Shivakumar told reporters here on the sidelines of a bike rally organised by the Congress workers.

Shivakumar was issued summons asking him to appear before the CBI on Monday.

However, citing party related activities, he requested that he be allowed to appear on November 25, for which the CBI officials have agreed.

The CBI on October 5 had conducted searches at 14 locations, including in Karnataka, Delhi and Mumbai at premises linked to Shivakumar and others.

The agency had said the searches have led to recovery of Rs 57 lakh cash and several incriminating documents, including property documents, bank related information, computer hard disk etc, and that the investigation was continuing.

It had also registered a case against Shivakumar and his family members for alleged possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 74.93 crore.

Delhi riots: Police files charge sheet against Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam in UAPA case

New Delhi: The Delhi police on Sunday filed a supplementary charge sheet in a court here against former JNU student leader Umar Khalid and JNU student Sharjeel Imam in a case related to the alleged larger conspiracy in the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February.

The charge sheet was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat against Khalid, Imam and one Faizan Khan under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections related to criminal conspiracy, murder, rioting, sedition, unlawful assembly and promoting enmity on the grounds of religion, language, caste, etc of the Indian Penal Code, according to sources.

The offences entail a maximum punishment of death penalty.

The 930-page supplementary charge sheet was filed under sections 13 (unlawful activities), 16 (terrorist act), 17 (raising funds for terrorist act) and 18 (conspiracy) of the UAPA.

The accused have been charged under IPC sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy) read with sections 109 (abetment), 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) 124A (sedition), 147 and 148 (rioting).

The three have also been charged under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 353 (assault to deter public servant), 395 (dacoity), 419 (cheating), 420 (cheating), 427 (mischief), 435 (mischief by fire), 436 (mischief by fire), 452 (house trespass), 454 (house breaking), 468 (forgery), 471 (using forged document as genuine) and 34 (common intention) of IPC and under relevant sections of the Arms Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Properties Act, the sources said.

While Khalid and Imam are currently in judicial custody in the case, Khan had been granted bail by the Delhi High Court.

The main charge sheet was filed in September against Pinjra Tod members and JNU students Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, Jamia Millia Islamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha and student activist Gulfisha Fatima.

Others who were charge-sheeted included former Congress Councillor Ishrat Jahan, Jamia Coordination Committee members Safoora Zargar, Meeran Haider and Shifa-Ur-Rehman, suspended AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain, activist Khalid Saifi, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Salim Malik, Mohd Salim Khan and Athar Khan.

Communal violence had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 after clashes between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiralled out of control leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

Bengaluru: Former Congress minister R Roshan Baig was arrested by the CBI here on Sunday in connection with the multi-crore I-Monetary Advisory (IMA) ponzi scam, the agency sources said.

Baig, a disqualified MLA of the Congress, was summoned to the CBI office on Sunday morning and “based on material evidence, he has been arrested,” they said.

The former Shivaji Nagar MLA was produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody, the sources added.

The multi-crore ponzi scheme run by Karnataka-based IMA and its group entities allegedly duped lakhs of people promising higher returns using Islamic ways of investment.

Chennai: DMK president M K Stalin on Sunday hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah for attacking his party with the 2G Spectrum scam allegation and dynasty politics barb, saying it was an amusing and conjuring trick ahead of the 2021 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

The accusations were comical since the ‘twins’ who stood by Shah’s side -Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam- were ‘involved in corruption,’ over the past about four years, Stalin alleged, referring to the Home Minister as “Delhi Chanakya.”

“They may do any number of conjuring tricks, but the people are clear,” the DMK chief said adding a body blow awaited the AIADMK and BJP combine in the assembly elections due in April-May next year for levelling such charges.

The AIADMK on Saturday said its alliance with the BJP would continue for the assembly elections. He would not rest till the DMK returned to power, Stalin said adding he would start his poll campaign in January.

Till such time the party won power in Tamil Nadu there was no question of respite and he would start his poll campaign in January, Stalin said.

“Let us march ahead by outmanoeuvring the conspiracies of AIADMK and the BJP to scuttle our journey towards victory,” he said in a reference to the accusations against his party.

On Saturday, Shah said DMK and its ally Congress had no right to talk about corruption since the 2G Spectrum allocation scam happened during the United Progressive Alliance regime.

Dubbing the DMK a dynasty party, he had alleged it did not function based on democratic values but only took forward dynasty politics. It was now the turn of the DMK to lose elections -2021 Assembly polls- following the RJD in Bihar, he said.

The Minister also demanded the DMK to list out what it had done for Tamil Nadu when it held the reins of power.

Party treasurer T R Baalu alleged the BJP regime at the Centre has only betrayed Tamil Nadu so far by ignoring Tamil and imposing Hindi, and ‘damaging’ social harmony.

Listing several projects like the Rs 908 crore Nemelli desalination plan, Baalu said these were the achievements of his party-led regime.

TV actor Leena Acharya dies due to kidney ailment

Mumbai: TV actor Leena Acharya, who featured on shows like “Class of 2020” and “Seth Ji”, passed away following a kidney ailment, according to actor Rohan Mehraa. She was in her late 30s.

Mehraa, who co-starred with Acharya in “Class of 2020”, told PTI that the actor breathed her last in Delhi on Saturday.

Actor Ayush Anand, who worked with Acharya on “Perfect Pati” in 2018-2019, said the actor never mentioned about her kidney ailment.

“It was only yesterday when I had a word with her brother I got to know that she was suffering from kidney issues since the past few years and was living on just one kidney that too donated by her mother,” Anand told PTI.

Mehraa shared a picture on Instagram from the filming of the ALTBalaji show with Acharya.

“Rest in peace, Ma’m. Last year, this time, we were shooting for ‘Class of 2020.’ Will miss you (sic),” the actor captioned the post. Describing Acharya as a jovial person, Anand said she was extremely passionate about her work.

“She never mentioned about this (illness) on set and was always smiling, keeping the environment on set positive,” he added.

Acharya also featured on shows like “Aap Ke Aa Jane Se” and “Meri Hanikarak Biwi”.

NEW DELHI: India’s COVID-19 caseload went past 91 lakh with 44,059 coronavirus infections being reported in a day, while the recoveries surged to 85,62,641, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 91,39,865, while the death toll climbed to 1,33,738 with 511 new fatalities including 121 from Delhi alone, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The number of active cases remained below 5 lakh for the thirteenth consecutive day.

There are 4,43,486 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country as on date which comprises 4.85 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

The national recovery rate was recorded 93.68 per cent,  while the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.46 per cent.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh  on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5.

It went past  50 lakh on September 16,  60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on  October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, and surpassed 90 lakh on November 20.

The 511 new fatalities include 121 from Delhi, 50 from Maharashtra, 49 from West Bengal, 35 from Uttar Pradesh, 27 from Kerala and 25 from Haryana.

A total of 1,33,738 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 46,623 from Maharashtra followed by 11,654 from Karnataka, 11,605 from Tamil Nadu, 8,391 from Delhi, 8,025 from West Bengal, 7,559 from Uttar Pradesh,  6,938 from Andhra Pradesh, 4,614 from Punjab and 3,859 from Gujarat.
