Ballia firing: Nadda cracks whip, directs controversial UP BJP MLA Surendra Singh to stay away from probe

October 19, 2020 by Nasheman

This comes a day after the MLA met Swatantra Dev Singh in Lucknow after being summoned over his statements in connection with the incident in which a man had died after gunfire.

NEW DELHI: The central leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday stepped in and cracked the whip against MLA Surendra Singh over his statements regarding the firing incident in Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh.

BJP National President JP Nadda has asked party’s Uttar Pradesh chief Swatantra Dev Singh to convey it to the MLA to stay away from the probe, sources said.

This comes a day after the MLA met Swatantra Dev Singh in Lucknow after being summoned over his statements in connection with the Ballia incident in which a man had died after bullets were fired during a meeting for allotment of shops under government quota, in Durjanpur village.

“BJP National President JP Nadda spoke with UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh, expressing his displeasure over statements of MLA Surendra Singh regarding Ballia incident. He asked the party’s UP chief to convey it to MLA Surendra Singh to stay away from the probe.

On October 16, a day after a local BJP leader Dhirendra Pratap Singh in Ballia district allegedly shot dead the man, BJP MLA Surendra Singh condemned the “one-sided” investigation of the administration.

“The incident is upsetting. It should not have taken place but I condemn the one-sided investigation of the administration. Nobody is looking at the pain of six women who have been injured in the incident. Dhirendra Singh fired in self-defence,” Surendra had said.

“How can I deny that he is my close associate? Not only mine, but he is also a close associate of BJP as his family votes for us and he worked for us in polls. Everyone who votes for us is a close associate. But I decry the incident and administration’s one-sided probe,” he had added.

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) arrested the main accused Dhirendra Pratap from Lucknow in connection with the Ballia firing case.

BENGALURU, NEW DELHI: Taking note of the spiralling number of Covid-19 cases in Karnataka, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has sent a team of experts to review the state government’s management of the pandemic. A team comprising a Joint Secretary, a public health expert and one clinician was rushed to Karnataka by the Centre. The team has so far visited Kalaburgi and Dharwad for field review and is expected to meet officials of the State Health Department on Saturday. In a statement released on Friday morning, the Union Health Ministry said that high-level teams have been deputed to Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, which are reporting a surge in new Covid-19 cases of late.

“Teams will support the state efforts towards strengthening containment, surveillance, testing, infection prevention and control measures, and efficient clinical management of the positive cases. The central teams shall also guide in effectively managing the challenges related to timely diagnosis and follow-up,” the statement said.

Officials of the State Health Department said the team is expected to review Karnataka’s model of Covid-19 management and give suggestions, but there is unlikely to be any interference or supervision. Given Wednesday’s number of total cases — 7,43,848 — in Karnataka, the Union Health Ministry said the state accounted for 10.1% of the national figure. “It has 11,010 cases per million population. So far, 6,20,008 patients have recovered in the state, resulting in recovery rate of 83.35%. The active cases are 1,13,557 (14.1% of national figure). The tests per million population is 53,518 in Kerala, 38,605 in Rajasthan, 37,872  in West Bengal and 50,191 in Chhattisgarh, lending credence to the State Government’s stance that a major contributor to the spike in the number of cases is extensive testing.

As of now, the total cases in Kerala are 3,17,929, which account for 4.3% of the total cases while the active cases are 94,609, comprising 11.8% of the total national figure. The state, however, has a low case fatality rate of 0.34% and deaths per million states is 31. The test positivity rate in the state is 16.6%.
In Rajasthan, there are 21, 587 active cases, which is 2.7 % of the national figure, and the test positivity rate is 5.3%. RJD-led Grand Alliance releases joint manifesto promising to waive off farmers’ loans

October 17, 2020 by Nasheman

Releasing the poll manifesto titled “Pran Hamara” (Our resolution), leaders of the Mahagathbandhan allies maintained a united face and promised to uproot the failed government of NDA.

In what appeared to be a well calculated move, the RJD-led Grand Alliance (Mahagatvandhan) promised to waive off the agricultural loans of Bihar’s farmers on top priority, and providing jobs to 10 lakh unemployed youths of the state  as soon as the government is formed.

Releasing the poll manifesto titled “Pran Hamara” (Our resolution), leaders of the Mahagatvandhan allies including face for CM Tejaswi Yadav of RJD, Randeep Singh Surjewala of the Indian National Congress and others, on Saturday maintained a united face and promised to uproot the failed government of NDA, led by a “tired CM” like Nitish Kumar.

Questioning Nitish Kumar’s ambitious scheme, Tejaswi Yadav said, “Where does the earmarked fund of Rs 24,000 crore go under the Jal-Jeevan-Harayali mission of Nitish Kumar? It is nothing but a well-engineered plundering of people’s money.”

LJP chief Chirag Paswan, too, had multiple times questioned the viability of this scheme promising to set up an inquiry into it soon after the formation of the LJP supported-government in the state.

Making a big announcement, aiming at garnering mass electoral support from the fraternity of farmers, Tejaswi Yadav announced that the GA government will waive off the farmers’ agricultural loans soon after initiative for providing jobs to 10 lakh unemployed people.

He also attempted to please the students by promising to waive off fees which is demanded while applying for jobs in the state government.

In addition to this, Yadav added that the government will also pay fare to the students who go to the examination centres.

As for the problem of over 4.5 lakh contractual teachers who were at loggerheads with the Nitish Kumar-led government, the manifesto promises to give them equal pay.

Accusing the Nitish Kumar government of providing scams, Tejaswi said, “Around 60 scams have been committed in Bihar during the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government including the Bhagalpur’s Srijan scam.”

He added that the NDA has engrossed itself only in the accusation of RJD and Lalu Prasad instead of speaking on agendas of unemployment and poverty.

Responding to Nitish Kumar’s recent statement of terming him as ‘inexperinced’, Tejaswi Yadav said, “I am 31 years old which is half of Nitish Kumar’s political career but have earned a lot of experience on how to work for the people.

If I was inexperienced, why would he appoint me as the deputy CM in the GA government?”

Since the age of 26, I have been targetted and accused in many cases and have faced agencies. But what I have done during my tenure as deputy CM is far better than others.”

The General secretary of the AICC, Sundeep Singh Surjewala accused the BJP in particular of being in three alliances in the Bihar polls.

“The BJP is in three alliances-one with the JDU (openly), second with the Assauddin Owais led alliance and the third with the LJP (behind the curtain). BJP is playing a double game as a party of Janus face,” he alleged.

October 17, 2020 by Nasheman

The Centre has also issued a standard of care guidelines thus ensuring the standardised quality of medical care for all coronavirus patients in government and private settings.

NEW DELHI: India has one of the lowest 81 COVID-19 deaths per million population in the world with less than 1,000 fatalities registered daily since October 4, while the fatality rate of 1.52 per cent on Friday was the lowest since March 22, the Union Health Ministry said.

These results have been boosted by 22 states and Union Territories which have demonstrated better performance and are reporting even lower deaths per million population compared to the national average, it said.

“The COVID-19 case fatality rate has been on the slide continuously. At the current figure of 1.52 per cent, it is the lowest since March 22,” it highlighted.\

Thirteen states and Union Territories, including Puducherry (403), Maharashtra (335), Goa (331), Delhi (317),  Karnataka (152), Tamil Nadu (135) and Punjab (131), had deaths per million population more than the national average.

As part of COVID-19 management and response policy, the Centre’s sharp focus has been not only on containing the spread of the disease but also to reduce deaths and save lives by providing quality clinical care to the critical and severe patients, the ministry said.

Collaborative efforts of the Centre, states and Union Territories have resulted in the strengthening of health facilities across the country.

A total of 2,212 dedicated Covid hospitals have been providing quality medical care.

The Centre has also issued a standard of care guidelines thus ensuring the standardised quality of medical care for all coronavirus patients in government and private settings.

A unique initiative to build the capacities of the ICU doctors in the clinical management of critical patients towards reducing the fatality, e-ICU has been started by AIIMS, New Delhi.

India on Friday too maintained the trend of registering more recoveries than the new cases, with 70,338 people having recuperated in 24 hours as against 63,371 fresh instances of the infection being reported.

The total number of recoveries have surged to 64,53,779 and exceed active cases of COVID-19 by 56,49,251.

“Recovered cases are eight times more than active cases which are sliding continuously. Presently, active cases comprise merely 10.92 per cent of the total cases,” the ministry highlighted.

The national recovery rate has improved to 87.56 per cent.

The ministry said 78 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 states and Union territories.

Maharashtra alone has contributed the maximum with more than 13,000 single-day recoveries.

Also, 79 per cent of the new infections are from 10 states and Union territories.

Maharashtra continues to report more than 10,000 cases daily followed by Karnataka with more than 8,000 cases.

Of the 895 fatalities reported in 24 hours, nearly 82 per cent are concentrated in 10 states and UTs of Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha and Delhi, the ministry said.

Maharashtra has reported 337 deaths which comprise more than 37 per cent of the new fatalities.

Maharashtra legislature issues breach of privilege notice to Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami

October 15, 2020 by Nasheman

The notice was served on October 13 and a written clarification has been sought from Goswami by October 15, the secretariat said in a statement on Wednesday.

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Legislature secretariat has issued a notice to Republic TV’s Editor in Chief Arnab Goswami for breach of privilege for submitting a copy of the proceedings of the Assembly in the Supreme Court without the Speaker’s permission.

The notice was served on October 13 and a written clarification has been sought from Goswami by October 15, the secretariat said in a statement on Wednesday.

The legislature secretariat had earlier sought a clarification from Goswami on September 16 over a breach of privilege motion against him during a two-day monsoon session of the state legislature.

The motion had been tabled by Shiv Sena MLA Prapap Sarnaik, taking exception to the way Goswami referred to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and other ministers during his coverage of Sushant Singh Rajput death case.

As no response came by deadline of October 5, a reminder was sent to him seeking response to that notice by October 20.

Copy of the proceedings of the house was also sent to him and he was told that the details cannot be used without the permission of the assembly speaker.

But Goswami, when he moved the Supreme Court against this notice, also submitted the copy of house proceedings in the apex court, which was a deliberate violation of the legislature’s privileges and powers of the assembly speaker, the statement said.
