India, Pakistan exchange lists of prisoners

January 1, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News India and Pakistan on Tuesday exchanged lists of prisoners lodged in each other’s jails in keeping with a 2008 agreement.

“India handed over (names) of 249 Pakistan civilian prisoners and 98 fishermen in India’s custody to Pakistan,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

“Pakistan has shared lists of 54 civilian prisoners and 483 fishermen in its custody who are Indians or believed to be Indians,” it stated.

The lists were exchanged through diplomatic channels simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad.

India also called for early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel and fishermen along with their boats.

“In this context, Pakistan was asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 17 Indian civilian prisoners and 369 Indian fishermen to India whose nationality has been confirmed,” the statement said.

“Immediate consular access has also been sought for the remaining prisoners and fishermen to facilitate their early release and repatriation.”

According to the 2008 agreement, both countries exchange lists of prisoners lodged in each other’s jails on January 1 and July 1 every year.

The statement said that India had also asked Pakistan to expedite a response in the case of 80 Pakistan prisoners who have completed their sentences and await repatriation for want of nationality confirmation by Islamabad.

“To take forward the understanding reached to address the humanitarian issues, especially with respect to elderly, women and mentally unsound prisoners, India has already shared the details of the reconstituted Joint Judicial Committee and of the Indian medical experts team to visit Pakistan to meet the mentally unsound prisoners,” it said.

“Pakistan has also been requested to expedite the visit of a group of fishermen’s representatives to facilitate the repatriation of Indian fishing boats, presently held in Pakistan’s custody at the earliest.”

Nasheman News : Delhi Police penalised a total of 509 people on New Year’s eve for drunk driving, an official said on Tuesday.

“We issued 509 drunk driving challans on the eve of New Year. Majority of them were youngsters,” Delhi Police Deputy Spokesperson Anil Mittal told IANS.

The number is, however, less compared to the drunk driving cases of last (2018) New Year’s eve, when at least 765 people were challaned.

Thousands of police personnel were deployed across the national capital to ensure New Year celebrations go off smoothly.

Special traffic arrangements were made to regulate the movement of revellers, police said.

To prevent drunk driving in the national capital on Monday, Delhi Police had earlier conveyed the message of safe driving with warning that any incident of hooliganism and drunk driving would be dealt with strictly.

Tight security for New Year eve revelry in Bengaluru

December 31, 2018 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news] Bengaluru  Security has been tightened and vigil stepped up across the city to ensure peaceful celebrations of the New Year eve on Monday night by revellers, said a top police officer on Sunday.

“About 10,000 police personnel, including women constables, will be deployed in and around the city to maintain law and order and prevent untoward incidents on the New Year eve,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar told reporters here.

Briefing media on measures taken to usher in the New Year in a spirited way by the citizens, especially revellers who throng downtown and upscale areas, Kumar said about 80 platoons of reserve police force and 250 police women would be stationed in the central business district (CBD) from Monday evening to Tuesday morning for patrolling.

“Vehicles will not be allowed to ply from Monday 9:00 p.m. to Tuesday 6:00 a.m. on Brigade Road, a stretch of M.G. Road, Church Street, Lavelle Road, Richmond Road and Museum Road, with no parking 1km around the CBD area as revellers will assemble to celebrate the event,” Kumar said.

As women, girls and children will also flock to downtown and visit malls, hotels, restaurants and shopping plazas, police men and women in plain clothes will keep a watch on trouble makers and eve-teasers.

As part of the vigil, 270 jeeps and 1,200 patrolling bikes will move around the areas to regulate the movement of revellers gathering from all over the city and from outside.

Four drone cameras and four LCD display systems on giant screens and 15 watch towers will monitor the revellers in the CBD area and track down mischief mongers.

“Vehicular traffic will not be allowed on flyovers and elevated roads from 9:00pm on Monday to 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday to prevent drunken driving by tipplers and road mishaps by revellers,” Kumar added.

Though eateries, pubs, clubs and restaurants will be allowed to remain open till 2:00 a.m., owners will be responsible for any incident in their premises.

Manush claims double crown at national TT championships

December 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Sonepat Manush Shah completed a grand double when he won back to back finals in the junior and youth boys categories at the 11Sports 80th Junior and Youth National Championships here on Sunday.

This was the first double title triumph for Manush at a national event.

Manush beat Ronit Bhanja of West Bengal 4-1 to win the youth boys title.

In the junior boys final, Manush played a brilliant attacking game against Delhi’s Payas Jain. The southpaw needed just four games 11-6, 11-7, 11-7, 13-11 to lift the title.

The confidence of the Gujarat left-hander was impeccable and his free-flowing strokes were always difficult for the opponent to handle as Payas would have realised. The Delhi boy, who played well throughout and even led his team to the first title, could not overcome the powerful Manush.

In the junior boys semis, Jain defeated Raegan Albuquerque 4-1 while Maush beat Deepit Patil 4-0.

Within a few minutes after claiming the junior boys title, Manush had to be ready for his battle against Rohit Bhanja for the youth Crown.

Putting his fatigue behind, Manush focused on the task at hand and defeated Bhanja despite the stretched first game and a couple more.

Exploiting the angles and executing his shots to perfection he posed a lot of problems for Bhanja, who managed to take a game of him. But beyond that Bhanja couldn’t do much against Manush, who was full of confidence and determination during his 18-16, 12-10, 10-12, 11-4, 11-5 triumph.

At least five people died after a fire broke out in a 16-storey residential building in suburban Mumbai’s Tilak Nagar area Thursday evening. Two others, including a fireman, were also injured in the fire that started at the 14th floor of Sargam Society (G+16) at building number 35, B Wing, in Chembur, near Ganesh Garden, at 7.50 pm Thursday. The fire has been doused, and cooling down operation is underway.

According to the disaster management cell, the fire was reported on the 10th floor of the 16-storey building and later spread to other floors. Prima facie fire brigade officials are suspecting short circuit as the cause of the fire. Officials said initially, the fire was minor but later it escalated to a Level 3 (major) fire as it spread.

The fire brigade sent six fire engines and six water tankers to the spot. Local corporator Shusham Sawant said, “The fire fighting system of the building was not working properly. Also, double parking (by residents) on the road delayed fire brigade vehicles from reaching the spot.”

2 women stopped 1km from Sabarimala, police lathi-charge protesters

December 24, 2018 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news] SabarimalaTwo Kerala women devotees from the the hitherto banned age group were stopped barely one kilometre from the Sabarimala temple on Monday by thousands of protesters, who had to be lathi-charged by the police as tension broke out here.

The incident came a day after 11 women from Tamil Nadu had to be sent back in the face of steep protests mounted by traditional Lord Ayyappa devotees.

Trouble broke out early on Monday, when police accompanying the two women clashed with angry pilgrims after they created hurdles for the two women devotees, who are below the age of 50, from proceeding ahead for their darshan.

The police had to resort to lathi-charge and shield Bindu from Malappuram and Kanaka Durga from Kannur as angry Ayyappa devotees chanted slogans and approached them menacingly.

The 100-men from the police team managed to take the two up the pathway but have been stuck since 8 a.m. about one kilometre from the shrine as more than a thousand pilgrims have created a wall, chanting Ayyappa hymns and shouting slogans — determined not to allow the two to go any further.

The policemen shielding the women are waiting for more police force to arrive before they move forward.

Speaking to the media, Bindu, an advocate, said Sabarimala tantris are not above the Supreme Court.

“I want to pray at the temple and I don’t think the law of tantri is above the law of the land,” said Bindu.

The temple town has witnessed protests by Hindu groups since the September 28 Supreme Court verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the temple, including those from the hitherto banned age group of 10 to 50 years.

Ever since the verdict, around three dozen women from the hitherto banned age group have tried and failed to go up the pathway leading to the temple, following protest from the believers.

On Sunday, 11 women from Tamil Nadu in that age group failed to reach the temple, after massive protests broke out against them forcing the police and the women to flee to safety.

Rise in breast cancer leading to more ovarian cancer: Experts By Somrita Ghosh

December 22, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delh (IANS) Breast cancer, the leading cause of mortality among women in India, is being seen as an augmenting factor in the rise in ovarian cancer cases as well, according to medical experts.

Dr M.D. Ray, surgical oncologist at AIIMS, Delhi, says women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer remain at a higher risk of contracting ovarian cancer due to the presence of same gene that triggers both cancers.

“Genes are responsible for cancer. Owing to the rise in the incidence of breast cancer, we have observed that there is a considerable increase in cases of ovarian cancer as well in the past few years. Even at AIIMS there have been many cases where a female patient has been diagnosed with both,” Dr Ray told IANS.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are human genes that produce tumour suppressor proteins. However, when either of these genes is mutated — meaning it doesn’t function correctly — the damage to the DNA may not be repaired properly. As a result, cells are more likely to develop additional genetic alterations that can lead to cancer.

“There are two types of genes — BRCA1 and BRCA2 — which are responsible for both breast and ovarian cancer. Dysfunction of these two genes increases the chances of getting diagnosed with both the cancers. An individual with breast cancer, therefore, remains at risk of facing ovarian cancer and vice versa,” Dr Ray noted.

“If one has breast cancer, there are 30-35 per cent chances of also having ovarian cancer. And if the person has ovarian cancer, there are 10-15 per cent chances of getting diagnosed with breast cancer,” Dr Mala Srivastava, oncologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, noted.

Specific inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 most notably increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, but they have also been associated with increased risks of several additional types of the disease like fallopian tube cancer, peritoneal cancer, colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer.

Women who have inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 tend to develop breast and ovarian cancers at younger ages than those without these mutations.

Although presumed to be more common among women above 50, Dr Ray noted that both breast and ovarian cancer cases are increasing among women below 35 as well.

“This is owing to poor lifestyle habits. And this is not confined to any particular economic class. A sedentary lifestyle further escalates it,” he added.

Since both cancers are related to genetics, medical experts suggested that women should start screening and gene-testing at an early age.

“For, say, if one or two family members had breast or ovarian cancer then all the women in that family should be tested for BRCA 1 and BRCA 2. Secondly, the screening for both breast and ovarian cancer should start early in life. Suppose a woman’s mother had breast cancer at the age of 45, then she should start mammography at the age of 35,” Dr Srivastava pointed out.

In India, however, gene tests are still costly which is why many women fail to get diagnosed in time. Dr Srivastava said that a gene test would cost around Rs 25,000 to Rs 26,000.

“In India, almost 90 per cent patients come to a doctor when in an advanced stage because they don’t get detected at an early stage. The main reason is that the symptoms of ovarian cancers are very vague. Despite all types of high-tech surgeries, the survival rate is less than 30 per cent,” Dr Ray added.

The doctors claimed that if detected early, both cancers are curable.

“Now-a-days, treatment is very good. If a woman diagnosed with breast cancer is detected and treated at an early stage, there are less chances of her having ovarian cancer,” Dr Srivastava explained.

According to a latest ICMR-Lancet report, breast cancer is the leading cancer among Indian women. States like Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Haryana were found to have the majority of cases.

The report also stated that ovarian cancer has the sixth-highest incidence rate with the majority in states like Kerala, Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh and Punjab.
