Agrarian crisis: Over 35,000 farmers converge in Mumbai to protest

March 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai: For the second time in 10 months, Maharashtra farmers cracked the whip on the government to turn spotlight on the grave agrarian crises gripping the state by completing a long march to the Legislature, here on Monday.

More than an estimated 35,000 peasants — men, women, youth and even seniors — with lines of worry collectively writ on their weary faces, determinedly completed the 180-km long march over six days.

Organised by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), the farmers wing of Communist Party of India-Marxist, the farmers sporting red caps, red flags, beating drums and cymbals and the tribal blowing instrument –‘tarpa’, marched in disciplined unity as the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena braced itself for the political fallout of the peasant power.

In a considerate gesture, the farmers abandoned their night’s rest, to march from the Somaiya Grounds, Vidyavihar starting 2 a.m. (Monday) to reach the historic Azad Maidan at dawn, to avoid inconveniencing students appearing for the ongoing board examinations.

Wary of the potential ramifications as the farmers prepared to lay ‘seige’ on the Maharashtra Legislature on Monday afternoon, the state government hurriedly formed a high-powered six-member Ministerial Committee to discuss all issues with the peasants.

Farmers leader Ajit Nawale said that among the major demands are implementation of the farm loans waiver announced in June 2017, (after farmers in the state went on a ‘strike’), then make the farmers completely debt-free, besides other demands.

“Considering the tremendous response we have evoked from across the state, the government cannot dismiss us lightly. If it continues to dilly-dally on the farm loans waiver or try to take us for a ride, it will face the consequences,” Nawale told reporters late on Sunday.

AIKS Maharashtra President Ashok Dhavale pointed out that the crisis in the farmlands is very severe with “over 400,000 farmers committing suicides in the past 25 years”.

“Agrarian distress is linked to malnutrition… The farming community is feeling betrayed by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre,” Dhavale said.

Congress leaders including state chief Ashok Chavan, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and Prithviraj Chavan, and the Nationalist Congress Party’s President Sharad Pawar and Dhananjay Munde and Jitendra Awhad declared support to the marchers.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray and Yuva Sena President Aditya Uddhav Thackeray turned up personally to welcome the farmers on Sunday evening.

Many of the marchers, braving the early summer heat, were seen reaching Mumbai with red and swollen eyes, broken or temporarily mended footwear, dusty, torn clothes, having barely managed a square meal or a proper bath during the past week as they started in Nashik on Wednesday.

However, they hoped that justice might be finally done to their cause.

Not kept in loop, won’t sign BCCI central contracts: Amitabh Chaudhary

March 10, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary on Thursday questioned the process followed for awarding central contracts to international and domestic cricketers, saying none of the office-bearers were kept in the loop on the matter.

COA member Diana Edulji, however, alleged that the BCCI finance committee sat on the central contracts despite three reminders and all officer-bearers were informed including Choudhary.

The contracts for October 2017 to September 2018 were finally announced on Wednesday with cricketers receiving a windfall.

“What I can tell you for sure is that I was not part of process. I can also tell you that nobody from the board was. I also happen to be the convenor of senior selection committee and no meeting was called. I won’t sign (on the contracts) if they come to me,” Choudhary told PTI.

Edulji countered Choudhary’s claims saying the selectors indeed met on Saturday and graded the players.

“We wrote to the BCCI finance committee three times (first time in October and latest this January) but did not get a reply. Now the players’ insurance was also coming up for renewal so we had to go ahead with the contracts,” said Edulji.

“I can also tell you that the selectors met on Saturday and the gradation was done only by them,” she added.

Off-spinner Jayant Yadav and Karun Nair bagging a contract despite not playing for India for a year raised eyebrows while someone like Rishabh Pant, who played for India on Tuesday, was excluded. Even Shreyas Iyer, who is a contender for World Cup berth.

A new A+ category was introduced for India players who play all three formats while C category was added for the women cricketers. The five players in A+ category including captain Virat Kohli would gets Rs 7 crore each while the players in A, B and C categrory Rs 5 crore, Rs 3 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively. MS Dhoni was named in A category as he doesn’t play all formats.

The BCCI officials and COA have been at loggerheads of late as implementation of Supreme Court-backed reforms keeps getting delayed further.

PNB scam fallout: Government makes passport mandatory for bank loans above Rs 50 crore

March 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Express photo by Sumit Malhotra

New Delhi: Passport details of borrowers taking loans of Rs 50 crore and more have been mandatory to ensure a swift action in case of fraud and prevent fraudsters from fleeing the country, a top official said today.

Passport details will help banks to take timely action and inform the relevant authorities to prevent fraudsters from fleeing the country.

“Next step on clean and responsible banking. Passport details must for loans above Rs 50 crore. Step to ensure quick response in case of fraud,” Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar tweeted.

This is a preventive step to avoid flight of economic offenders and banks to collect passport details of all new borrowers of loans in excess of Rs 50 crore, he said.

For all existing loans of over Rs 50 crore, banks have been asked to collect passport details of borrowers within 45 days, he added.

In absence of passport details, banks were hamstrung in taking timely action to prevent defaulters especially wilful one from fleeing the country.

Several big defaulters like Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya and Jatin Mehta have fled the country putting the recovery mechanism in quandary.

Last week, the Cabinet approved the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill after Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi allegedly defrauded state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) of Rs 12,700 crore and left the country and are refusing to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

The proposed fugitive law aims to impound and sell assets of Nirav Modi-type escapees with a view to quickly recover dues. It also will apply to defaulters who have an outstanding of Rs 100 crore or more and have escaped from the country.

As part of drive to clean the banking system, the Finance Ministry last week had directed public sector banks (PSBs) to probe all NPA accounts of over Rs 50 crore for possible fraud and accordingly report the cases to CBI.

Besides, the ministry had asked banks to monitor loans above Rs 250 crore and red flags whenever the original covenants of the loans are violated. This was spelt out as part of 6-point-reform measures announced for PSBs in January.

All this happened because I embraced Islam: Hadiya

March 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Kozhikode: On her first visit to her home state Kerala after the Supreme Court upheld her marriage with Shafin Jahan, Hadiya on Saturday said “all this happened as I embraced Islam”.

“The Constitution gives all the freedom to choose their religion, which is a fundamental right of every citizen and all this happened because I embraced Islam,” said Hadiya while interacting with the media.

Hadiya and her husband arrived here on Saturday from Salem and drove to the office of the Popular Front of India (PFI) where she briefly interacted with reporters.

“With the Supreme Court upholding our marriage, we feel we have got freedom,” Hadiya said here. The top court on March 8, set aside an order of the Kerala High Court that annulled their marriage.

Hadiya, 24, earlier Akhila Ashokan, embraced Islam and married Shafin Jahan, a Muslim. Hadiya’s father alleged that she was forcibly converted by groups with links to terrorist outfits.

“It was only the PFI that supported us all through our troubled times and what’s more surprising is that two Muslim organisations whom we approached refused to help us,” added Hadiya who will be in Kerala for three more days before returning to Salem in Tamil Nadu where she is studying.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud on Thursday said: “Hadiya alias Akhila Asokan is at liberty to pursue her future endeavours according to law.”

However, the court also said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) would continue its probe into the criminal dimension of the case, if any.

Hadiya’s father has said that he will go ahead in the case seeking legal recourse to the apex court’s latest judgement.

FIR against cricketer Mohammed Shami for domestic violence

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

An FIR was on Friday registered against Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and four other members of his family on the basis of a complaint filed by the bowler’s wife Hasin Jahan, who made claims of adultery, torture and threats of being killed, reports ANI.

Hasin Jahan had on Thursday lodged a police complaint against him and his family members at a Kolkata police station. She had earlier posted screenshots of alleged conversations between Shami and multiple women. Jahan had also shared some photos of the bowler as “evidence” to support her allegations.

The Indian cricketer has been booked under sections 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (Causing hurt), 307 (Attempt to murder), 376 (Punishment for rape), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence.), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC.

Meanwhile, Shami has defended himself saying, “All these accusations made against me are baseless. They have no meaning. She said that this has been happening for five years, the fact is that we have been married just for four years.”

“If this (the abuse) has been happening since five years then why did it come out now. Why did it take five years for it to come out. According to me, this is a well thought out conspiracy against me. I want to remain just as normal as you’ve always seen me. On Holi and every other festival, I’ve been with my family. Spent time with my daughter and wife. Even after my wife was trolled so much in the past I stood by her. And I would like to stand by her today as well,” he told news agency ANI.

Top cop Roopa Moudgil releases music video to inspire women

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Firebrand police officer D Roopa Moudgil, who shot into the limelight with her report on alleged preferential treatment to sidelined AIADMK leader Sasikala in jail, has shown another side to her personality by releasing a music video to inspire women.

“Proud to release my music video. This should be the besttribute I could have given to women on International Women’sDay,” she told PTI in an interview here after the video was released yesterday.

The video features her singing ‘Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye’, a popular song from the 1965-Meena Kumari and Dharmendra starrer ‘Kaajal.’

“The video is a collage of still photos, news videos andvisuals featuring me. The audio recording was done in half anhour and video shooting in four hours.

This was done for a cause and free of cost,” Moudgil said.

Asked why she chose this song, the officer said it continues toinspire her, which speaks about the power of mind.

Moudgil first came into the limelight when as Dharwad SP she arrested the thenMadhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti after rushing toBhopal with her team.

Bharti was arrested in connection with a 10-year-old non-bailable criminal case in which she was accused of hoisting the national flag at Dharwad’s communally sensitive Idgah Maidan on Independence Day.

In recent months, Moudgil’s report as DIG(Prisons) laying bare alleged irregularities in the Parapana Agrahara Central Jail here, including preferential treatment to Sasikala, had stirred a hornet’s nest.

Sasikala is in jail serving her four-year-term in a disproportionate assets case.
The officer said the lyrics of the song has always inspired her and continues to do so.

“Your mind is like the mirror. It is all in the mind – happiness, sadness, success, failure. If you can think you can, you surely will … Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye,” she said.

The music composer is Alen who has done music for many Kannada films.

Replying to a query, Moudgil said she did the video at the request of Shruthi Rao, who is a musician and radio jockey.

Besides singing, she also has learnt Bharatanatyam and classical music.
