Bengaluru becomes first city in India to have its own logo

December 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Based on a crowd-sourced design, a logo was unveiled on Sunday at the ‘Namma Bengaluru Habba’ fest to promote ‘Brand Bengaluru’ on the global tourist map.

“The logo captures the spirit of the city and its 11 million people. Its design is a crowd-sourced, creative identity representing the city and its denizens,” said Karnataka tourism minister Priyank Kharge. The city is the first to gets its own identity badge.

With a new identify and a new look, Bengaluru joins New York, Paris, Berlin, London, Melbourne, Singapore and other global cities in having its own tourism logo.

“As a vibrant city of many cultures, colours and flavours, Bengaluru is on the move. It’s a dynamic city where tradition and modernity co-exist and its people thrive to aspire,” said Kharge.

The state tourism department will promote Bengaluru by leveraging its new identity through the logo and showcase the city’s heritage, architecture, gardens, art, music, food and its modern lifestyle, driven by technology.

“The logo will also help to leverage Bengaluru’s identity and create a brand value that could spur its economy and generate jobs by attracting more investments,” said Kharge.

Scripted in English and Kannada, the logo is similar to the tourism department’s ‘One State Many World’s’ logo, with options to change its colour into green, red or yellow to suit the occasion.

Observing that Brand Bengaluru was not about its coffee cafes and shopping malls but a new identity representing its people, their lifestyle and culture, the minister said the logo would provide an opportunity for tourists to feel the vibrancy of the city and its ethos.

Kharge also launched the tourism department’s mobile app with audio and video facility at the street fest held around the Vidhan Soudha.

The day-long street fest also had live performances by folk artists, story-telling sessions, interactive workshops and a flea market, with stalls displaying handicrafts, terracotta jewellery, herbal products, organic grains, including millets and a variety of food items.

Mumbai: Relief for Ashok Chavan in Adarsh case

December 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today set aside the sanction granted to the CBI by Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao to prosecute senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh housing society scam.

A division bench of Justices Ranjit More and Sadhana Jadhav ruled that though the CBI had claimed to be in possession of fresh evidence against Chavan at the time of seeking the sanction, it “failed to present any fresh evidence.”

The bench said the material presented by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) before Governor Rao could not be converted into credible fresh evidence against Chavan.

“The sanctioning authority is an independent body that can’t allow itself to be influenced by anyone’s opinion,” the court said.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by Chavan, challenging the sanction granted by the governor in February 2016 to prosecute the former chief minister of Maharashtra under various sections of the IPC related to criminal conspiracy and cheating, besides provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Chavan had challenged Rao’s order in the high court, calling it “arbitrary, illegal and unjust” and passed with “malafide intentions”.

Chavan, currently the president of the Maharashtra unit of the Congress, had served as the chief minister between December 2008 and November 2010 before he was asked to step down on charges of corruption in the Adarsh scam.

The CBI has accused Chavan of approving additional floor space index (FSI) for the Adarsh society in posh south Mumbai, and accepting two flats for his relatives in return when he was the chief minister.

He is also accused of illegally approving, as revenue minister earlier, allotment of 40 per cent of flats to civilians even though the society was originally meant for defence personnel.

The CBI had earlier told the HC that if Chavan’s petition is allowed, it would amount to his acquittal, which would render the entire probe exercise futile.

Opposition RJD leader shot dead in Bihar

December 22, 2017 by Nasheman

Patna: An Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader in Bihar was shot dead on Friday by unidentified assailants, police said.

Hareram Yadav, 50, was out on his morning walk when motorcycle-borne men shot him dead in Bihar’s Samastipur district.

According to a district police official Ajeet Kumar, the incident took place at Pukar chowk near his village. “Hareram Yadav was killed at close range after the assailants enquired about his well being.”

The police officer said it appeared to be the handiwork of people who knew how to handle weapons.

Angry over the incident, hundreds of villagers staged protest by blocking Hasanpur-Bithan road and shouted slogans against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and demanded the arrest of the killers.

Hareram is the fourth RJD leader in Bihar to be murdered after Nitish Kumar formed the new JD-U-BJP government after dumping the Grand Alliance with the RJD and Congress in July end.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his younger son Tejashwi Yadav, who is the Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly, has repeatedly slammed the state government in last few days over “spurt in crimes and total failure of law and order”.

RBI may be holding back Rs 2,000 notes, says SBI report

December 21, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may either be holding back Rs 2,000 notes or could have stopped printing high denomination currency, says a SBI Research report.

Juxtaposing the data presented in the Lok Sabha recently with the one provided by RBI in its Annual Report earlier, the SBI Ecoflash report said on Wednesday, “we observe” that the value of small denomination currency in circulation up to March 2017 was Rs 3.5 lakh crore.

This implies that the value of high denomination notes was equivalent to Rs 13.32 lakh crore as on December 8, after netting out the small denomination notes from the currency in circulation on that day, it said.

The report further said that as per the Ministry of Finance in the Lok Sabha recently, the RBI has printed 1,695.7 crore pieces of Rs 500 notes and 365.4 crore pieces of Rs 2,000 notes as on December 8. The total value of such notes translates into Rs 15.79 lakh crore.

“This means that the residual amount of high currency notes (the difference between Rs 15.79 lakh crore Rs 13.32 lakh crore) of Rs 2.46 lakh crore may have been printed by the RBI but not supplied in the market,” said the report authored Soumya Kanti Ghosh, group chief economic adviser, SBI. Interestingly, the report added, “it is safe to assume” that Rs 2.46 lakh crore may be on the lower side as the RBI must have printed notes of small denomination in the interregnum (Rs 50 and Rs 200).

“As a logical corollary, as Rs 2,000 denomination currency led to challenges in transactions, it thus indeed seems that RBI may have either consciously stopped printing the Rs 2,000 denomination notes/or printing in smaller numbers after initially it was printed in ample amount to normalise the liquidity situation,” said Ecoflash.

This also means that the share of small currency notes in total currency in circulation now may have touched 35% in value terms, it added. The government on November 8 last year had announced demonetisation of high value notes, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, which together accounted for 86-87% of the currency in circulation.

The move had lead to huge cash shortage and large queues were witnessed at banks for exchange or depositing the scrapped currency. The RBI introduced a new Rs 2,000 note as well as new version of the Rs 500 note. Subsequently, the RBI, for the first time, also introduced a Rs 200 note.

China says no political considerations in Masood Azhar’s listing issue

December 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Beijing: China today rejected India’s assertion that moves at the UN to list JeM leader Masood Azhar as a global terrorist were blocked due to narrow political considerations, saying it acted in a “candid way” over the issue based on rules and procedures.

China has been consistently blocking moves by India, the US, the UK and France to designate Azhar as a global terrorist by the 1267 Sanctions Committee by putting technical holds. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin during an open debate yesterday in the Security Council criticised some UN members for failing to “clearly understand” the common threat of terrorism.

“It is noticed that on an issue as serious as the designation of terrorist individuals and entities, the Council-mandated Sanctions Committees fail to make concrete progress and fall victim to narrow political and strategic concerns in some cases,” he said.

Responding to Akbaruddin’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing that on Azhar’s issue China had “acted in a candid way with ease”. “So what we do is nothing to do with the narrow-minded political considerations as you mentioned,” Hua said.

The issue of China blocking the listing of Azhar at the UN is expected to come up in tomorrow’s 20th round of India- China border talks in New Delhi. The talks will be held between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi. Besides the border-related issues, the two top officials also have the mandate to discuss all issues between the two countries. “We have stated our position multiple times about the listing issue 1267 committee to the media queries and dealt the questions in a sincere way on different occasions in the past,” Hua said.

She said China “firmly” backed the crackdown on various international terrorist groups. Defending China’s move to block the moves against Azhar who is accused by India of being the mastermind of the Pathankot terrorist attack, Hua said: “on this issue, we make our own judgement based on the merit of the matters themselves”.

She said the “relevant move” by China in 1267 committee was based on its rules and procedures. “We will work with various parties to uphold the security and peace of the international communication,” Hua said.

Special CBI court acquits all accused including A Raja and Kanimozhi in 2G case

December 21, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A special CBI court on Thursday acquitted all the accused including former Telecom Minister A Raja and DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi in the multi-crore 2G spectrum allocations cases. Fifteen other accused in the case and three companies were also acquitted.

Others acquitted in the case are former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja’s erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra and three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) — Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair.

Directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal, Kalaignar TV director Sharad Kumar and Bollywood producer Karim Morani are also acquitted in the case.

Besides them, three telecom firms — Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd (STPL), Reliance Telecom Ltd and Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd — were also accused and acquitted in the case.

Special CBI Judge O P Saini pronounced the judgement in the 2G scam which had rocked the UPA government.

In its charge sheet filed in April 2011 against Raja and others, the CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of 122 licences for 2G spectrum which were scrapped by the Supreme Court on February 2, 2012.

All the accused facing trial in these cases had denied allegations levelled against them by the CBI and the ED.

The court’s verdict came more than eight years after the CBI filed an FIR against “unknown persons” and began its investigations following a recommendation by the Central Vigilance Commission.

Manmohan, UPA stand vindicated in 2G scam: Sibal

December 21, 2017 by Nasheman

PTI

New Delhi: Congress leader and senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Thursday said the acquittal of all the accused in the 2G scam vindicated then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the UPA’s stand that there was no scam in the allocation of spectrum and licences to telecom companies.

“Manmohan Singh and the UPA government stand vindicated today,” Sibal said. He was speaking to reporters after a special court here acquitted former Telecom Minister A. Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi and others accused in the 2008 2G spectrum allocation scam case.

Sibal sought an apology from Vinod Rai who as then Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had in his telecom audit report estimated a massive presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the state exchequer by allocating 2G spectrum licences at allegedly throwaway prices.

The Congress leader said Rai must also apologise to the nation “as the telecom industry is in dire straits today and thanks to him and the then opposition (BJP)”.

Sibal, who succeeded Raja after the DMK leader was forced to resign, also sought an apology from the BJP that had accused the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of shielding the corrupt.

“They (the BJP) must apologise as they attacked the (then) Prime Minister, and the Congress in the Lok Sabha as well as in Rajya Sabha. Today’s verdict clears the government position as vindicated.”

Sibal had maintained during his term as Telecom Minister that there was zero loss to the exchequer and no wrong had taken place in the allocation of licences.

He repeated the argument, saying: “I told the people of this that nothing wrong that has happened. And today my position, the government’s position and the then Prime Minister’s position has been vindicated.”

The alleged scam in the issuance of licences and allocation of 2G spectrum by the Department of Telecom occurred during the Congress-led UPA government’s first tenure in 2008 but was widely reported in 2010 following a report by then Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai.
