Religious conversion seekers must give 30 days advance notice: Rajasthan HC

December 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Jaipur: Any person going for religious conversion on his own should inform the District Collector 30 days in advance, Rajasthan High Court ordered on Friday.

Issuing fresh guidelines for matters relating to religious conversions, Justice G.K. Vyas warned that stringent action would be taken against those found forcing people to convert.

“If any particular organisation is found guilty (of forcing) for caste conversion, its licence will be cancelled,” he observed.

On November 28, the amicus curiae appointed by the Rajasthan High Court to look into the legality of religious conversions in the state had advised the court to issue guidelines for conversions until a law was enacted by the government in this regard.

The amicus curiae was appointed by the court following a habeas corpus petition filed by Chirag Singhvi, brother of Aarifa Modi alias Payal Singhvi, which challenged the conversion of his sister from Hinduism to Islam and then her marriage to a Muslim man.

The division bench of justices G.K. Vyas and Virendra Kumar Mathur had adjourned the hearing for arguments by the government and other respondents.

Rs 80,000 cr has come to BJP coffers in last five months: Anna Hazare

December 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Guwahati: Attacking the Narendra Modi government at the Centre, prominent social activist Anna Hazare on Friday said the country has topped the list of corrupt countries in Asia in the last three years of the NDA rule and claimed that Rs 80,000 crore has come to the coffers of the BJP in the last five months as donation.

Hazare, citing a Forbes Magazine article that quoted a Transparency International survey, said India tops the list of corrupt countries in Asia. “I am not claiming this but it being reported by Forbes Magazine after conducting a survey among the Asian countries,” he said.

“I have been silent for the last three years. When a new government comes we must give them some time. So I remained silent, but now the time has come to speak against them. I am going to start another movement for a strong Jan Lokpal as well as for the farmers of the country from March 23 next year,” said Hazare.

Slamming the Centre, he said that Rs 80,000 crore had come to the coffers of the ruling party in the last five months as donation.

“The common people are still reeling under problems. The farmers of the country are suffering. Banks give loans to the farmers but slap interest as per their whims and fancies. The Reserve Bank of India must fix a rate of interest for all the farmers and banks should not be allowed to fix the interest for the benefit of the farmers.”

“The farmers commit suicide as they fail to get good price for their crops to repay the loan. There is no MSP for their paddy,” he said while expressing his concerns.

He said he had written 32 letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past three years but received no response to any of them from the PMO.

“I am going to involve everyone in the movement for a strong Jan Lokpal and farmers’ issues. I am going everywhere to speak to the people. We are ready to go to jail. But if they put us in jails we must ensure that every jail in the country should be filled by people,” said Hazare.

The veteran leader said while the then UPA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made a weak Jan Lokpal, the present BJP-led NDA government has further weakened the Jan Lokpal.

“Earlier there was a provision which made it mandatory for the officers to declare their assets but the present government abolished it. While the companies were allowed to donate 7.5 per cent of their profit to political parties, now any amount can be donated to the political parties,” said Hazare while appealing to people to support the movement to be started from March 23.

Hindu group attacks Christmas carol singers in MP

December 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Satna: Alleging religious conversion, a mob linked to a right-wing Hindu group attacked Catholic carol singers in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district and also set a priest’s car ablaze.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening. Instead of taking action against the attackers, the police detained the Christian singers, a priest said.

Father Rene Verghese told IANS on Friday: “A group of students training to become priests was moving around Satna town, visiting Christian institutions and singing carols.

“Some 15 km from here in Dara Kalan village church they were getting ready for the Christmas celebrations, when a group of people attacked them, accusing them of carrying out religious conversion.”

Verghese said the Hindu group raised slogans and called the Civil Lines police station.

All 32 carollers, accompanied by two priests, who were singing carols were picked up and taken to the police station. Eight priests who later went to the police station to enquire into the matter were also taken into custody, he said.

The agitating mob attacked the Christian students inside the police station, and set fire to the priest’s car parked outside.

Verghese denied any attempt at religious conversion. He said singing carols is a common practice around the time of Christmas. “We were just doing that and preparing for the Christmas celebrations.”

However, City Superintendent of Police D.D. Pande told IANS: “One Dharmendra Dohad has registered a complaint with us that he was paid Rs 5,000 and converted to a Christian.

“He was given a holy dip in a pond and his name was changed to Dharmendra Thomas, the complainant said. They also asked him to pray to Lord Christ,” he said.

A case has been registered against one identified person and five unknown persons in the conversion case, Pande said.

They are also investigating the vandalism carried out by the mob.
