Congress announces its picks for Sindagi, Hanagal bypolls

October 6, 2021 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The Congress on Tuesday announced its candidates — Ashok Managuli for Sindagi and Srinivas Mane for the Hanagal bypolls — soon after party acting president Sonia Gandhi met Karnataka CLP leader Siddaramaiah in Delhi. State party president D K Shivakumar had presented his choices when he was in Delhi a few days ago.

Congress sources said while Ashok Managuli, son of former JDS MLA M C Managuli, was a serious claimant for the ticket from Sindagi, there were two aspirants for the Hanagal seat — MLC Srinivas Mane, who contested from the seat in 2018 and lost to C M Udasi, and Manohar Tahsildar who has served as MLA for four terms. While Srinivas Mane staked claim on the ground that he lost in 2018 by about 6,000 votes, Manohar Talsildar had claimed the ticket as he had represented the constituency for four terms. However, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar backed the candidature of Srinivas Mane whose term as MLC expires on January 5.

Asked if the party was considering a larger role for him at the national level, Siddaramaiah emphatically denied it. “Except for Karnataka politics, no national politics was discussed,” he said and asserted that his interest lies in state politics. He added that he had been offered the post of AICC General Secretary by former party chief Rahul Gandhi which he had declined and recalled that he resigned as member of the Congress Working Committee and clarified that he has no interest in national politics.

Siddaramaiah also said there was no discussion with the party president on any reshuffle in the party’s state unit. “It was not discussed with Sonia Gandhi. I have given a list to Randeep Singh Surjewala. He has said that he will discuss the issue of revamping the state party unit with me,” he added. Party sources confirmed that the Congress is going for a major revamp and the names are likely to be finalised before Ayudha Puja. When asked about it, Siddaramaiah said, “We won’t discuss it in public.”

Sack MoS: Siddu
Siddaramaiah said that the killing of four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh reminded him of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the incident. He demanded that Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra be dismissed and his son arrested.

J&K: Militants kill Kashmiri Pandit who didn’t flee valley after 1990

October 6, 2021 by Nasheman

SRINAGAR:  A prominent Kashmiri Pandit businessman, who had not left the Valley even after the militancy erupted in 1990, was among three people killed by militants on Tuesday.

A police officer said militants targeted Makhan Lal Bindroo, the owner of Srinagar’s famous chemist shop Bindroo Medicate, at his pharmacy at Iqbal Park area in uptown Srinagar in the evening.

The militants fired from a point blank range, leaving Bindroo in a pool of blood, and escaped from the highly secured area.

Bindroo, 65, was rushed to the SMHS Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. SMHS medical superintendent Dr Kanwaljeet Singh told this newspaper that Bindroo was hit by four bullets.

“One of the bullets hit him on eyebrow,” he said.

Immediately after the militant attack, police, CRPF and army personnel rushed to the area and launched a combing and search operation.

The area where the attack took place is highly secured as police and paramilitary personnel remain stationed.

A police station is barely a few hundred meters away from the pharmacy and a paramilitary CRPF camp is also not far off.

Unlike others of his community, Bindroo had stayed back with his wife and operated his pharmacy. Bindroo Medicate is one-stop shop for patients as the medicines unavailable anywhere else can be found there.

An hour after Bindroo’s killing, militants shot dead a non-local street vendor at Lal Bazar area in downtown Srinagar.

The deceased, who was selling his ware in a handcart, was identified as Virender Paswan of Bhagalpur from Bihar.

In the third attack, militants shot dead a civilian in Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district in the evening. Militants fired from blank range at Mohammad Shafi, a civilian, in Shahgund Hajin area.

He was also declared brought dead by doctors.

The killings drew widespread condemnations from all the political parties. J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the killings and said perpetrators of these heinous acts would be brought to justice very soon.

Bollywood stars high-paying clients to D-Company’s drug cartel, say officials

October 5, 2021 by Nasheman

MUMBAI:  It’s no secret anymore that Mumbai’s drug cartel is being peddled by the D-Company and that most of the Bollywood stars and strugglers are its high-paying clients.

“The D-company helmed by underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim suspected to be based in Pakistan runs this lucrative business. The D-Company buys raw drugs — opium, poppy and coca — from Afghanistan and Cambodia. After processing them into heroin, brown sugar, charas and cocaine, these drugs are smuggled into India via Punjab border and Gujarat ports, and land here in Mumbai,” said a senior officer from the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Mumbai Police.

After the drug consignment reaches Mumbai, it is handed over to the main dealer, sub-dealers and other local suppliers.

The drug suppliers mainly hide in the ghettos of Mira Road, Nalasopara and Dockyard Road of Mumbai and extended suburbs.

“The college-going students mostly take ganja and charas. Heroin and cocaine, the refined drugs — are sold at a very high price. Only the well-heeled people can afford them. Most of the Bollywood film stars and strugglers take either heroin or cocaine,” said the officer.

A highly-placed source in the Anti-Narcotics Cell said MDMA (also knows as Ecstasy) is in high demand for its said effects on sexual excitement.

“The MDMA is also used by Bollywood struggler girls. There is a myth that this drug can keep them slim and fit,” the source explained.

Earlier the MDMA used to be made in Mumbai and Palghar area only.

“However, following continuous high vigil and frequent raids, these makers shifted to Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Heroin is the highest quality and costliest drug that has been supplied by Cambodia and some South American countries,” added the source.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Sunday arrested Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and seven others in connection with the seizure of banned drugs onboard a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast.

Besides Aryan Khan, the arrested accused are identified as Munmun Dhamecha, Arbaaz Merchant, Ismeet Singh, Mohak Jaswal, Gomit Chopra, Nupur Sarika, and Vikrant Chhokar, an NCB official said.

Aryan Khan, Dhamecha, and Merchant were produced before a metropolitan magistrate’s court here earlier in the day which remanded them in NCB custody till October 4.

All the eight accused will be produced before the court on Monday after their medical examination, he added.

Aryan Khan has been booked under sections 27 (punishment for consumption of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance), 8C (produce, manufacture, possess, sell or purchase of drugs) and other relevant provisions of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will take oath as an MLA on October 7 and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has written to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar inviting him to administer the oath of office to the party supremo at the State Assembly instead, informed Partha Chatterjee, General Secretary of Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday.

Speaking to ANI, Chatterjee said, “We suggested and requested the Governor to come down to Assembly and administer the oath of office on October 7.”

“Raj Bhawan response on the administration of Oath/Affirmation to the Members elected to the WBLA in bye-election from 159-Bhabanipur A/C, and the adjourned poll in 56-Samserganj and 58-Jangipur A/Cs held on 30 September 2021. Once Gazetted Governor would take call,” tweeted the official Twitter handle of the West Bengal Governor.

Earlier on October 3, following TMC’s poll victory in Bhabanipur, Jangipur and Shamsherganj, a request was made to the Governor by the state that the Bengal assembly speaker be given the responsibility to administer the oath to the newly-elected MLAs on October 4.

Responding to a question on the Governor’s decision to conduct the oath-taking ceremony in the Governor house, Chatterjee said, “It is our desire and request to the governor that the oath-taking be conducted in the Assembly.”

Answering a query on TMC and other opposition leaders not being allowed in the Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh following violence that broke out after a car hit protesting farmers, Chatterjee said, “This is their (BJP) culture. They are scared of TMC and Mamata Banerjee.”

Bhabanipur gave its verdict for Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee as she won the assembly constituency by-polls with a margin of over 58,000 votes.

According to the Election Commission of India, Mamata Banerjee secured 85,263 votes which are around 71.90 per cent of the total votes connected in the by-elections.

AKSHATHA T

A Father had a son and a daughter by name Basayya and Acchu . The twins looked alike , except for the large , red birthmark on the daughters cheek . It happened one day that the mother had left her mirror sitting on a chair . Brother looked in the mirror “Ah , how beautiful I am”, he said , my skin is so smooth and perfect . Sister looked in the mirror and screamed , Ah , how ugly I am, my skin is rough and red , she hated the big red birthmark on her cheek, brother went on and on about how beautiful he looked . Sister felt ugly and angry . She ran up to the mirror and smashed it . Brother said , sister broke mother’s mirror , she’s so mean ! Sister hid outside in the chicken coop. Father helped brother see why sister was so mad .
Brother felt bad, and said to his father,” can we buy a mirror to a sister that will help her to see her true beauty,.” That’s a good idea !” Said father. They went to the market where many people were selling their wares. An old peddler women was at the market with a monkey. The monkey danced and sanged in front of an mirror. The mirror sang back . ” That’s the mirror for sister!”pointed brother . Father paid the old pleddler women . They placed the mirror in the back of their cart. The monkey jumped into the cartand hid in a sack. Brother ran into the house . ” Look sister , a new mirror ” I don’t wanta new mirror ,” she cried. ” Take it back ! ” But this one is enchanted ” sister looked in the mirror and couldn’t see anything , not even her own reflection . ” The mirror doesn’t work ! It’s broken ” said sister . Just then , the monkey jumped out of the sack . ” Ee , Ee , ! Can’t catch me ! He screemed as he ran from table to chair . Brother and sister chased the monkey all around the room. The naughty monkey hid behind the couch and wouldn’t come out ! Sister gave the monkey a banana ! He jumped out of his hiding place , plopped on the couch and stuck , the banana in his ear.
Basayya and Acchu laughed ” silly monkey ” we better get him back to the old peddler , said brother . Wait a minute ! Look !” Said sister . They stared at the monkey who was laughing at himself in the mirror . Acchu looked into the mirror but she could only see her own reflection . Acchu saw herself giving her doll to a friend who didn’t have one . She saw herself mending a bird’s broken wing . She saw herself giving the Baker back his money wing . She saw herself giving the Baker back his money when he gave her too much change . Then, something magical happened Acchu saw her face. The very first thing she once thought was ugly now looked beautiful . Acchu is glowing ! Father , mother and brother basayya embraced sister Acchu . The beautiful things you do are good and true , and the beauty that you are shines though ” then said oo oi ! So true agreed monkey ” Get that monkey said brother basayya .They all chased monkey right back to the old peddler women who was very happy to see him . So it is that brother basayya learned of his true beauty by helping his sister Acchu discover hers . Sister learned that true beauty isn’t how you loon , it is who you are ! As for the monkey , some say he is still in the village dancing with the enchanted mirror.

Facebook outage costs Mark Zuckerberg USD 6 bn, position drop in billionaire list: Report

October 5, 2021 by Nasheman

Facebook Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg’s personal wealth took at least USD 6 billion fall amid a whistleblower’s explosive claims against the site and massive outages that disrupted services on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for several hours on Monday. A selloff sent the social-media giant’s stock plummeting around 5 per cent on Monday, adding to a drop of about 15 per cent since mid-September.

The stock slide sent Zuckerberg’s worth down to USD 120.9 billion, dropping him below Bill Gates to No. 5 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

According to the index, he has lost about USD 19 billion of wealth since September 13, when he was worth nearly USD 140 billion.

“Sorry for the disruption today — I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, grave claims against Facebook by a ‘whistleblower’ ie. former product manager, Frances Haugen, in an interview on CBS’ ’60 Minutes’, that aired on Sunday, has also done a ton of damage to the website’s credibility.

Haugen in the interview spoke about Facebook’s alleged complicity with regard to the January 2021 US Capitol Riots.

She also explained how Facebook has “over and over again” chosen “profit over safety”.

Haugen, who will testify before US Congress this week, said she hopes that by coming forward the government will put regulations in place to govern the company’s activities.

100% cut-offs of DU colleges leave aspirants dejected

100% cut-offs of DU colleges leave aspirants dejected

New Delhi: The cent per cent cut-offs of Delhi University colleges have left many aspirants who have scored above 90 per cent dejected and are now scouting for alternatives as they feel that their dream of getting admissions into DU might not become reality.

DU on Friday announced its first cut-off list for undergraduate admissions with prominent colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce and Hindu College pegging the cut-offs at 100 per cent for various courses.

Bhavika, a Chandigarh-based aspirant, has 95.5 per cent in her best of four and wants to pursue BA (Honours) Economics from either Lady Shri Ram College or Shri Ram College of Commerce.

“Seeing the cut-offs, DU looks like a distant dream at the moment. I have applied under the ECA quota, for which the admissions will happen after seats under the various cut-offs are filled. There is a lot of time to go for that. As a backup plan, I have taken admission in Symbiosis Law School, Pune but DU is my first preference,” she said.

Her friend Ishita Mehra, who has scored 93.6 per cent in best of four, has taken admission in SD College, Chandigarh as a backup option.

“They should have held the central universities common entrance test for aspirants. I didn’t get enough marks and had there been exams, I am sure I would have scored 96 per cent or 97 per cent. I want to get into BCom(Honours) in a good North Campus college. I will wait for the remaining cut-offs but I won’t settle for a lesser college in DU,” she said.

Roshni Zahoor, a resident of Rataul in Uttar Pradesh, has 94.75 per cent in her best of four subjects and wishes to pursue BA(Honours) History at a prominent North Campus college.

“The cut-offs are quite high and I won’t be able to make it in the first list in the campus colleges. However, I am meeting the cut-offs in Deshbandhu College and Aryabhatta College. I will take admission in Deshbandhu College and then migrate to the college I want if I manage to meet the scores in any of the subsequent lists,” Zahoor said.

Riya Sharma, who has scored 94.8 per cent in her Best of Four, wants to pursue BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, which is offered in three colleges — Acharya Narendra Dev, Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences and Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences.

“At Bhaskaracharya, the cut-off for the course is 99 per cent while at Acharya Narendra Dev it is 97 per cent. I am meeting the eligibility at Shaheed Rajguru where the cut-off is 94 per cent. I will take admission to that college and wait for the cut-off at Acharya Narendra Dev to come down,” she said.

Another DU aspirant Prishya Jain, who has scored 98.25 per cent in best of four subjects, wants to pursue BCom Honours in Shri Ram College of Commerce and Lady Shri Ram College but the high cut-offs have put a spanner.

“I will wait for the subsequent cut-offs for these colleges. I have taken admission in a college in my hometown as a backup option,” Jain said.

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association treasurer Abha Dev Habib said students should not lose heart and wait for subsequent cut-offs.

Dr Babli Moitra Saraf, the principal of Indraprastha College For Women, said students should not be in despair even if they are not able to meet the cut-offs in the first list.

“The first and the second cut-offs are higher because colleges do not want to run the risk of excessive admissions. The rule is that everyone within the cut-off has to be accommodated irrespective of the number of seats,” she said.

Saraf added that there are many colleges and universities in Delhi like the Indraprastha University and Ambedkar University.
