“Kale Angrez”: Navjot Singh Sidhu’s Latest Attack At BJP

Congress star campaigner Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday urged the voters in Indore in Madhya Pradesh to free the country from the rule of “Kale Angrez” (Black Britishers) and “chowkidars” as he took a jab at the ruling BJP.
“Yeh Congress Mahatama Gandhi ki party hai, Maulana Azad ki party hai. Yeh Congress desh ko goron se Azadi dene wali party hai… Aur tum Indore walon ab Desh ko kale angrezon aur chowkidaron se azadi dilaogee… Apne vote ko chota mat samjho (Congress is the party of Mahatama Gandhi and Maulana Azad. This is the party that freed the country from the rule of colonisers… You, the people of Indore, will now free the country from the rule of Black Britishers and chowkidars. Do not underestimate the power of your vote),” the cricketer-turned-politician said.
The 55-year-old leader also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech on Friday. “The Chowkidar is only for the Ambanis. The country is under a debt of 32 Lakh crore and he is to blame. If a farmer takes a debt of Rs. 2 lakh, he takes a blank check but does not do the same for wealthy businessmen,” he said.
The Congress leader was served a second notice by the Election Commission on Friday over his speech in Bhopal last month where had accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of stealing money from government-controlled banks and called him “rashtra drohi” or traitor. Earlier this month, Mr Sidhu was served a notice by the election body for allegedly launching a personal attack on PM Modi at a rally in Ahmedabad on April 17.
On Friday, he also referred to the complaints with the election body against him. “You complain about what I say about you, but I never complain. Shehenshahs (kings) don’t complain,” he said.
Mr Sidhu, who is the tourism minister in the Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government, switched camp from the BJP to the Congress around three years ago. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi last month chose him to “extensively campaign” for the party in the national elections, he had announced in a tweet.
The last phase of the seven-phased national elections, which began on April 11, will be held on May 19; votes will be counted on May 23.
India, U.S. to engage regularly to resolve trade issues, says government

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India and the United States will engage regularly to resolve outstanding trade issues, the Indian government said, after U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross met his Indian counterpart Suresh Prabhu on Monday.U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross testifies before a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on oversight of the Commerce Department, in Washington, U.S., March 14, 2019. India and the United States are locked in disputes over tariffs, price caps India has imposed on imported U.S. medical devices and over rules banning companies from selling products via firms in which they have an equity interest.
“Both sides agreed to engage regularly at various levels to resolve outstanding trade issues by exploring suitable solutions, which are mutually beneficial,” the government said in the statement.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had said earlier on Monday he planned to discuss India’s new e-commerce rules that could have an impact on operations of firms such as Amazon and Walmart with his Indian counterpart on Monday.
India also prohibits companies from making deals with sellers to sell exclusively on their platforms, rules which could affect investment plans of foreign firms in India’s fast-growing market set to touch $200 billion by 2027.
“Both sides agreed to deepen economic cooperation and bilateral trade by ensuring greater cooperation amongst stakeholders, including government, businesses and entrepreneurs,” the government said.
In March, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.
India is the world’s biggest beneficiary of that trade concession, called the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), and its withdrawal would be the strongest punitive action against the country since Trump took office in 2017.
Two Indian trade ministry sources had said the government was hoping for a breakthrough in the talks. One said India wanted the United States to review its decision on GSP and also hopes the it will defer its decision to withdraw trade privileges until India’s general elections are over on May 19.
Political and security ties between India and the United States have grown but trade has become problematic. Indian officials said both sides are likely to emphasize strategic ties and try to manage trade differences.
“The messaging is a re-assurance that the U.S. thinks of India as a strategic partner and the relationship cannot be colored by differences on trade,” one of the sources said.
Total U.S. trade with India stood at $87.5 billion in 2018, with the deficit at $21.3 billion.
India has held off implementation of new tariffs on U.S. goods after Washington refused to give it an exemption on higher steel duties.

Opposition not celebrating moment of great pride: Arun Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley hailed the listing of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN Security Council (UNSC). At the same time, he also attacked the opposition accusing them of not celebrating the major diplomatic win for India.
“The listing of Masood Azhar by UNSC is a big victory for India and its diplomacy. Azhar and his organisation had been trying to target India for decades. Azhar could not be declared an international terrorist thrice in the past due to a technical hold. But India’s influence, its diplomatic pressure and recent developments brought together many countries who wanted Azhar to be declared an international terrorist. And China was forced to remove its technical hold,” Jaitley said at a press conference in New Delhi on Thursday.
It is a matter of great pride for the country as well as the Narendra Modi government, he added.
Slamming the opposition, Jaitley said, “If India wins, all Indians win, but unfortunately, some friends in opposition feel they may pay a political price if they join the celebration. They had questioned the airstrike on terror strongholds in Balakot and claimed that ‘we also carried out an invisible surgical strike’.”
India was trying for this for a decade and the opposition demeans the country’s victory by calling the listing as insignificant, Jaitley said.
The 1267 Sanctions Committee of the UNSC on Wednesday announced the designation of Azhar, leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), over its ties to Al-Qaeda.
The US, France along with the UK had moved the proposal to designate Azhar as a “global terrorist” in UNSC in February, just days after the deadly Pulwama terror attack.
The JeM has claimed responsibility for the Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF soldiers and led to a spike in military tensions between India and Pakistan.
China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the UNSC, was the sole hold-out in the 15-nation body on the bid to blacklist Azhar, blocking attempts by placing a “technical hold” and asking for “more time to examine” the proposal.

Centre’s Notice To Rahul Gandhi Over Complaint About Foreign Citizenship
The complaint is from BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who has for years been alleging that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen.
[Nasheman news] NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi asked to explain “factual position” after a complaint on his citizenship.
Rahul Gandhi has been asked by the Home Ministry to explain within 15 days his “factual position” over a complaint that he has foreign citizenship. The complaint is from BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who has for years been alleging that the Congress president declared himself a British citizen in documents.
The home ministry notice comes bang in the middle of the seven-phase national election in which Rahul Gandhi is contesting from the constituencies of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala.
“I am directed to say that this ministry has received a representation from Dr Subramanian Swamy, in which it has been brought out that a company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9EH and that you were one of the directors and secretary of the said company,” says the letter from BC Joshi, Director, Citizenship, in the Home Ministry.
The ministry refers to the complaint as saying that in the company’s annual returns filed on October 10, 2005 and October 31, 2006, Rahul Gandhi’s date of birth is June 19, 1970 and “you had declared your nationality as British.”
The dissolution application of the company dated February 17, 2009 also refers to Rahul Gandhi’s nationality as British, the letter says.

The Home Ministry, in its letter to Rahul Gandhi, asked him explain his “factual position” over complaints about his citizenship.
“You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of the communication,” the Home Ministry writes.
Subramanian Swamy, a fierce critic of the Gandhis, raised the allegation first in 2015, in a complaint to the ethics committee of parliament, and has repeated it several times since.
Rahul Gandhi, in his reply to the ethics committee, had accused the BJP leader of misleading the nation and had challenged him to substantiate his claims with documentary proof. Denying ever seeking British citizenship, he also called it an “endeavor to malign my name”.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, “This is BJP in panic mode. For BJP, Rahul Gandhi is the only agenda. They can do whatever they want but they will decisively lose the election.”
The BJP’s Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said it was a “very serious question” for the president of a party. “You should be a citizen of India if you want to vote or fight the election,” said the Union Minister.8
The election will end on May 19 and the results will be declared on May 23.
