Bata fined Rs 9000 for asking customer to pay Rs 3 for carry bag

April 18, 2019 by Nasheman

The forum observed that if companies were really worried about the environment, they should provide environment-friendly bags for free to their customers.

Bata India Limited has been told to pay Rs 9,000 to a consumer for deficiency in services. Acting on a complaint filed by the customer, a Chandigarh consumer forum has slammed Bata for asking the customer to pay Rs 3 for a paper bag.

In his complaint, Chandigarh resident Dinesh Prasad Raturi, told the consumer forum that he had purchased a pair of shoes on February 5 from a Bata store located in Sector 22D. The store charged him Rs 402 which also included charges for the paper bag. Raturi told the forum that by charging him for the bag, Bata was also endorsing its brand on the bag which was not justified.

The complainant sought a refund of Rs 3 and compensation for deficiency in services. Countering this, Bata India refuted the allegations of deficiency in services. The forum said compelling a customer to pay for a paper bag was a clear deficiency in service as it was the store’s duty to provide a free bag to the customer who had purchased their product.

The consumer forum has also directed Bata India to provide free paper bags to its customers. It also observed that if the companies were really worried about the environment, they should provide free environment-friendly bags to their customers.

The forum in its decision has directed Bata India Limited to refund the cost of the bag (Rs 3) and litigation charges, i.e. Rs 1000.

Besides asking Bata to pay Rs 3000 as compensation to the customer for the mental agony caused by deficiency in services, the forum has also directed the leading shoe brand to deposit Rs 5,000 in the legal aid account of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

The Chandigarh consumer forum’s decision is an eye opener for stores that compel customers to pay up to Rs five for carry bags.

K’taka IAS officer deputed as poll observer suspended for checking PM Modi’s copter

April 18, 2019 by Nasheman

Mohammed Mohsin was suspended with immediate effect for acting contrary to the instructions of the Commission concerning SPG protectees.

The Election Commission on Wednesday suspended a General Observer belonging to Karnataka IAS cadre for allegedly checking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter in Odisha’s Sambalpur on Tuesday.

Mohammed Mohsin was suspended with immediate effect for acting contrary to the instructions of the Commission concerning SPG protectees and will be posted at Sambalpur till further orders, a poll panel letter dated April 16 said.

A Karnataka cadre officer of the Indian Administrative Service, Mohsin was deputed as a General Observer and working under the supervision of the poll panel in Odisha.

“… the Commission has considered the material available before it and prima facie finds it dereliction of duty,” said the letter.

Sources told the Times of India that when PM Modi reached Sambalpur to address a rally on Tuesday, election officials inspected his convoy, which constituted a violation of protocol.

A senior police officer present at Sambalpur airstrip, speaking on condition of anonymity told ToI, “A team of poll officials led by Mohsin inspected some papers in the chopper carrying the PM. The inspection delayed his arrival at the meeting venue by around 20 minutes which was reported to the ECI.”

The Prime Minister had visited Odisha on Tuesday and addressed two rallies in Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar.

Mohsin is presently secretary in the backward classes department. Karnataka Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar said he was not aware of the incident and said the state cannot intervene in the matter.

On whether the official is barred from carrying out his duties after the elections as a result of the order, Bhaskar said, “Only after we receive further directives from the commission we can consider the next step.”

Earlier this week, the Karnataka Congress had tweeted a 14-second video clip showing two men carrying a black box allegedly unloaded from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter to a private Innova parked at a helipad, claiming that the video was filmed soon after Modi landed in Chitradurga last week to address an election rally. The Congress demanded that the EC conduct a probe into the same.

50 lakh jobs lost after demonetisation : Report

April 17, 2019 by Nasheman

Nearly 50 lakh people in India lost their jobs between 2016-2018, a report said highlighting that the “beginning of the decline” coincided with demonetisation, although “no direct causal relationship could be established” between the trends.

The report by Azim Premji University’s titled State of Working India was based on the CMIE-CPDX data that highlighted India’s unemployed were mostly the youth.

“In general, women are much worse affected than men. They have higher unemployment rates, as well as lower labour force participation rates,” it added.

The report revealed that unemployment, in general, has risen steadily post 2011. Both the Periodic Labour Force Survey and the CMIE-CPDX report the overall unemployment rate to be around 6 per cent in 2018, double of what it was in the decade from 2000 to 2011.”

“Among urban women, graduates are 10 per cent of the working age population but 34 per cent of the unemployed. The age group 20-24 years is hugely over-represented among the unemployed.

“Among urban men, for example, this age group accounts for 13.5 per cent of the working age population but 60 per cent of the unemployed.”

Besides, the report noted that “in addition to rising open unemployment among the higher educated, the less educated (and likely, informal) workers have also seen job losses and reduced work opportunities since 2016.

Earlier in February, the National Sample Survey Office’s (NSSO’s) periodic labour force survey (PLFS) had stated that India’s unemployment rate hit a 45-year high of 6.1 per cent in 2017.

The NSSO report was reportedly based on data collected between July 2017 and June 2018 and is the first official survey post-demonetisation.

However, the NITI Aayog debunked claims of jobless growth saying that the report was not a final one.

Earlier, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) had stated that 1.5 million jobs were lost just in the first four months of 2017—immediately after demonetisation of old 500 and 1000 rupee notes.

The issue hogged the limelight after two independent members of the National Statistical Commission — acting Chairman PC Mohanan and JV Meenakshi — resigned on January 28 over a disagreement with the Government on certain issues.

One issue pertains to the government withholding the release of the results of NSSO’s quinquennial survey, for the year 2017-18 even though the commission approved the report. This gains significance in the wake of the government being criticised for a scarcity of jobs in the country.

Only I can make India superpower, says PM Modi .

April 17, 2019 by Nasheman

PM Modi

Appealing to the people of Maharashtra to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said only he can provide a strong government at the Centre and make it a superpower.

“Last time (2014) you gave me a full majority and I could work with full strength to take firm decisions and work for public welfare. You have witnessed how I ran the country past five years,” Modi said, addressing a rally in Maharashtra’s Solapur.

He said that for making India a superpower, the country needs a sturdy government, not a “majboor” (helpless) one, and that tough one only he can provide, not the Congress Party.

Speaking at Akluj in Solapur district of Maharashtra that is part of the Madha Lok Sabha constituency, PM Modi hit out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi over ‘chowkidar chor hai’ campaign saying that he is being abused because of his “backward caste” background.

“Recently Rahul Gandhi branded an entire community as thief. He says everyone having Modi in his name is a thief. They abuse me because I am from a backward community. This is how they view people from backward castes,” he said.

PM Modi also targeted NCP chief Sharad Pawar in his speech saying that he is not contesting the elections because “he knows the wind”.

“Sharad Rao is also a player, he knows the wind. He will never allow himself to lose,” PM Modi said.

Rs 1.48 crore cash seized from TTV Dhinakaran’s party worker

April 17, 2019 by Nasheman

The raids were conducted at the premises of an AMMK leader in Theni where assembly bypolls are scheduled tomorrow.

The income tax department has seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.48 crore after an overnight search at a shop of a worker of TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK in Andipatti near Tamil Nadu’s Theni ahead of assembly by-polls, officials said on Wednesday.

This comes after the Lok Sabha election to the Vellore constituency in the southern state was cancelled on Tuesday after officials recovered huge amounts of cash from a building allegedly linked to a prominent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader last week. The cash seizure of Rs 11.53 crore was the biggest from a single location till date during the election season.

The police have also detained four Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam workers for restraining the officials from entering the premise at Andipatti, where a by-poll is scheduled to be held on Thursday.

“After we got information that a huge amount of unaccounted cash has been kept in a shop owned by an AMMK worker, we raided it. During the nine-hour-long raid, the I-T department seized the cash packed in 92 covers,” Pallavi Baldev, returning officer and Theni district collector, said.

The ward numbers, voters’ names and address were written on each and every cover which were filled with cash. They had planned to give Rs 300 to each voter, said sources with the EC.

According to the I-T department’s officials, they launched the raid at around on Tuesday to 5.30am on Wednesday.

According to news agency , I-T department’s director general (investigations) B Murali Kumar said the “sworn statement of the person present in the premises was recorded and he said that Rs 2 crore in cash was brought in there for distribution to voters in Andipatti panchayat union area on April 16.”

The shopkeeper fled the spot after downing the shutter when the team, comprised officials of the Election Commission-appointed surveillance squad and the I-T department, arrived at the shop. An argument broke out between AMMK workers and the officials and police had to open fire during the raids to disperse the party’s supporters, who objected to the action being taken. No one was injured in the firing, officials said.

“When I-T and EC officials tried to access the shop, a gang blocked them. A few also tried for run-away with cash bundles. Therefore, the police force which accompanied the officials opened fire in the air as a precautionary measure,” Baldev said.

A detailed report has been sent to Election Commission and income tax department in New Delhi, she said.

The AMMK’s Andippati constituency by-poll candidate K Jayakumar denied the charge, saying that the cash was seized from an office of the ruling AIADMK.

“We have not kept any money in our place. As we had noticed that the AIADMK’s workers have kept money, we informed the flying squad of EC. However, they are accusing us,” said Jayakumar.

I-T department officials also conducted searches in DMK’s senior leader and candidate K for the Thoothukkudi Lok Sabha seat Kanimozhi’s residence and office on Tuesday night.

This is not the first time an election has been countermanded on charges of bribing voters in Tamil Nadu.

The by-elections in the RK Nagar seat, held by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, was cancelled in 2017 after bribery charges. In 2016, the commission had cancelled polling in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi assembly constituencies after the AIADMK and DMK were alleged to have been bribing voters.

All the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu go to polls on April 18. Elections are also being held on 22 assembly seats that are vacant in the state in two phases on April 18 and May 19. The counting of votes will be held on May 23.
