Congress demands ailing Parrikar’s resignation over British national’s rape

December 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The Congress on Friday demanded the resignation of ailing Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar over the rape of a British national on Thursday near the popular beach village of Palolem in South Goa.

The recurring sexual assault on foreign nationals in the coastal state will have an impact on Goa’s tourism prospects, president of the Goa Congress women’s unit Pratima Coutinho told reporters at the state Congress headquarters here.

“The CM of Goa is missing. He is not keeping good health. He is not ready to distribute portfolios. He is holding 38 ministries and he is not even willing to distribute them. He is the home minister of Goa and molestation, rapes are increasing day by day,” Coutinho said, reacting to the rape of the middle-aged British national on Thursday morning.

The accused in the case was arrested by the police the same evening.

“The BJP government has finished mining in Goa. The tourism industry which is the main source of revenue, is facing a setback with these rapes and such incidents. Every year we see foreign nationals raped and molested. How can we expect foreign tourists to come to Goa? High time CM Parrikar resigns or gives his portfolios to other ministers,” she also said.

Goa is one of the top tourism destinations in the country and attracts more than seven million tourists annually, out of which half a million are foreigners.

Meanwhile, after the Goa BJP announced its protest march on Friday from the state BJP office to the Panaji ferry ramp, right opposite the Congress state headquarters, the Congress unfurled a banner outside its office premises ‘welcoming’ protestors from the ruling party to “explain their lies on Rafale deal”.

Saudi Arabia modifies intelligence service after Khashoggi murder

December 21, 2018 by Nasheman

New departments to be formed to ensure operations are in line with national security policy and human rights law.2 hours ago

Intense global backlash over Khashoggi's murder has tarnished the prince's international reputation, analysts say [Reuters]

Saudi Arabia has said it is creating government bodies to boost oversight of its intelligence operations, in the wake of international outrage over journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder.

The kingdom has said Khashoggi was killed inside its Istanbul consulate on October 2 in a “rogue operation” led by the then Deputy Intelligence Chief Ahmad al-Assiri and Royal Court Adviser Saud al-Qahtani, both of whom have been sacked.

King Salman subsequently ordered a restructuring of the main intelligence agency under the supervision of his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), who has faced global criticism over the journalist’s murder even though the government denies he was involved.

A committee headed by the prince has approved the creation of three departments to ensure intelligence operations are in line with the national security policy, international human rights law and “approved procedures”, the official Saudi Press Agency said on Thursday.

The statement made no mention of Khashoggi.

Bessma Momani, professor of political science at the University of Waterloo, said the modifications were an attempt to shift attention away from the crown prince.

“I think the optics of reform are clear,” she told Al Jazeera. “The message being portrayed here is that there are checks and balances in the system, that there is oversight, but frankly is doesn’t really address a bigger cloud hanging over the crown prince, that he was implicated in ordering this murder of Khashoggi.

“The key issue doesn’t go away, but I think the cosmetic restructuring is meant to try and deflect attention.”

“The idea here is that these three departments are going to be overseen by this committee, and this committee is going to be the crown prince. It really is, I think, quite difficult to see it as a genuine effort.”

The intense global backlash over Khashoggi’s killing has tarnished the prince’s international reputation and left the oil-rich kingdom diplomatically weakened, analysts say.

It has also cast a fresh spotlight on the Saudi-led conflict in Yemen, which is gripped by what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The US Senate voted last week to end American military support for Riyadh’s military campaign in Yemen, and separately held Prince Mohammed responsible for Khashoggi’s killing.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia slammed the Senate resolutions as “blatant interference”, warning that the move could have repercussions on its strategic ties with Washington.

Kumarswamy waiting for approval from congress High command

December 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday, December 20 said that he was waiting for a message from his coalition partner, the Congress party, to write to the Governor about carrying out the exercise.

“I’m yet to receive message from Delhi (Congress high command),” Kumaraswamy said in response to a question about writing a letter to the governor for the cabinet expansion exercise.

Addressing presspersons here, he said “Soon after our senior coalition partner (Congress) gives us the message, I will write to the governor.”

Seeking to contain simmering discontent within the party over cabinet expansion, the Congress on Tuesday had said the Congress-JD(S) coalition ministry would be expanded on December 22 as announced earlier.

Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah, Pradesh Congress President Dinesh Gundu Rao and Deputy chief minister G Parameshwara left for Delhi this evening to meet the Congress high command, including general secretary in-charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal, to discuss the expansion and the probable names.

According to sources, they are expected to meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi during the visit. However, reports suggest that Gandhi was in Shimla on a personal visit.

Asked whether the cabinet expansion would take place on December 22, the Chief Minister said, “please ask Congress party.”

“There are no issues with us (JDS)… we are ready for it. They (Congress leaders) too have gone to Delhi with an intention to expand the cabinet.”

Dinesh Gundi Rao on Tuesday, December q8 had indicated that it may be cabinet expansion or reshuffle or both may happen on December 22, creating worry among several ministers about being dropped from the ministry.

Kumaraswamy, on his part, did not spell out anything clearly to a question, whether it will be cabinet reshuffle on Saturday.

Pointing out that the Congress was the major party in the coalition, Kumaraswamy said, whatever they decide,” accordingly we will carry out the exercise.”

“There is no problem within our party (JDS), we are all united…..the vacant posts that are there we will fill them, we are ready, there are no issues within us,” he added. With the cabinet expansion exercise being postponed repeatedly, several aspirants, especially those from the Congress, had openly expressed their displeasure.

Despite repeated reiteration by Congress leaders that the expansion will take place on the scheduled date, party MLAs are sceptical about it happening till the Lok Sabha polls early next year. Some of them have also cited the current “Shoonya Masa” that is considered inauspicious month, as the reason.

According to the pact reached between the two partners at the time of formation of the coalition government in May, there are now six vacant ministerial positions left for the Congress and two for the JD(S).

This will be the second expansion of the Kumaraswamy’s ministry, who currently heads the 26-member cabinet.

Along with cabinet expansion, the coalition partners are also likely to appoint MLAs as heads to boards and corporations, and as parliamentary secretaries to Ministers on December 22.

Canberra, Australian Border Force (ABF) staff are regularly subjected to sexual harassment and bullying at work, an internal review has found.

The 2017 review of ABF culture, published by the Guardian Australia on Friday, uncovered “alarming levels of sexual harassment and bullying” within the organization, Xinhua news agency reported.

It revealed that the ABF was fostering a culture of nepotism and favouritism since it was established as an amalgamation of customs and immigration in 2015.

The report concluded that women, older employees, people with disabilities and ethnically diverse people were being unconsciously discriminated against at the ABF.

A separate report published by Fairfax Media earlier in December revealed that 22 per cent of ABF staff said they had experienced bullying or harassment at work in a 12-month period.

Pakistan has no say on Jinnah House: India

December 21, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi,India has made it clear that Pakistan has no say whatsoever on Jinnah House, the sea-facing bungalow in Mumbai of founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali which is in the process of being turned into a cultural and convention centre.

“Pakistan is not in the picture,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Thursday in response to a question at a media briefing.

“They have no locus standi as far as this property is concerned,” Kumar said. “It is a government of India property.”

His remarks came after the Pakistan Foreign Office earlier in the day said that Islamabad would not relinquish its claim over the property.

Jinnah’s daughter Dina Wadia had moved the Bombay High Court in August 2007 claiming ownership of the property on the ground that she was sole legal heir of Jinnah.

After she passed away in December last year, her son and Wadia group chairman Nusli Wadia is carrying on the litigation process.

“We are actually in the process of renovating it and putting it to effective use on the lines of what we do with Hyderabad House in New Delhi,” Kumar said.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in a letter to Mumbai BJP legislator Mangal Prabhat Lodha, said that the Prime Minister’s Office has approved the property to be transferred to her ministry.

“The Congress has finally jolted Narendraji from his deep slumber on Gabbar Singh Tax. Though still drowsy, he now wants to implement what he had earlier called the Congress Party’s ‘Grand Stupid Thought’. Better late then never Narendraji!,” Gandhi tweeted.

His remarks came two days after Modi said at an event in Mumbai that the government was aiming to bring 99 per cent of items at or below 18 per cent GST slab.

Online health consultation app launched in UP

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news] LucknowIn a bid to reach out to the far-flung areas and provide healthcare to people living in the countryside, India’s largest online health camp, myUpchar, launched its “Saathi” app and “Health Card” in the state capital on Wednesday.

“Under the new model, myUpchar has a partner in the operating villages along with a team of volunteers and support staff, who collect the basic details like weight, height, blood pressure, glucose, pulse and temperature, and shares those on the app with the doctor,” an official said.

During the launch event, the company declared that the users of this healthcare app are mostly from Lucknow, hence the launch event was organised in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

In view of the upcoming trends of online healthcare services in different cities, myUpchar decided to launch it for the rural population. In the near future, myUpchar will be participating in the healthcare awareness and soon bring in e-clinic networks.

“The focus of myUpchar is to solve the real healthcare problems in rural India where there are negligible healthcare facilities. Unlike other healthcare companies who serve only the elite class people, myUpchar is putting in every effort and hard work to solve the healthcare problems of the rural population in our country,” portal’s co-funder Rajat Garg said.

Further elaborating, he said: “The demand for online healthcare services is more in Lucknow as compared to the other cities of India. Every month, 11 per cent of Lucknow’s population has been seen urging for online healthcare services, which inspired us to launch ‘Saathi’ as well as ‘Health Card’ in Lucknow.”

Congress may not last full term in MP, hints Shivraj

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

[Nasheman news] Bhopal Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has hinted at his “earlier than expected comeback” to the treasury benches as the Kamal Nath-led Congress government may not last its full term of five years.

Chouhan was meeting his supporters on his last night at the Chief Minister’s residence late on Wednesday, when he assured them and said: “Don’t worry about your future. Don’t be despondent over what will happen to you, for I will be back.”

As Bharatiya Janata Party workers shouted slogans of Chouhan’s return in five years, the former Chief Minister, who ruled the state for three straight terms before being ousted in a close contest in the aeeembly elections, said in Bollywood style: “Tiger abhi zinda hai (The King is till alive).”

“Maybe it will not take an entire five years, may be I will be back sooner than you expect,” Chouhan added.

The Congress won 114 seats in the 230-member House. It fell two short of the magic number in a contest with the BJP (109) that went down to the wire.

However, the Congress ensured the support of 121 MLAs with the Samajwadi Party (1), Bahujan Samaj Party (2) and four Independents backing it.

ICC asks PCB to pay compensation to BCCI

December 20, 2018 by Nasheman

Dubai, (IANS) The International Cricket Council on Wednesday asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to pay the BCCI nearly 60 percent of the legal costs after losing their bid to claim compensation for cancelled bilateral series.

Last month, the PCB had asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay around $63 million for pulling out of two bilateral series in 2014 and 2015, which was rejected by the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC).

According to norm, the winning party claims legal costs from the losing side.

“The DRC has determined that the PCB should pay 60 percent of “(a) the (BCCI’s) Claimed Costs; and (b) the administrative costs and expenses of the Panel… (including, without limitation, the fees of the Tribunal members, and the costs and expenses they incurred in relation to this matter), the figure whereof is to be supplied to the PCB by the ICC,” Cricinfo quoted the ICC as saying.

Both boards have not yet disclosed the actual amount to be paid by the PCB.

“The PCB notes the ICC Dispute Panel’s decision on BCCI’s claims for their legal expense incurred on the PCB-BCCI dispute,” the PCB said in a statement.

“The award of significantly lesser costs than claimed by BCCI reflects that PCB’s case had merits. The PCB, however, reiterates its disappointment in the original decision/award given against it,” the board added.
