HDK has claimed he will never speak to the media again

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

On Thursday, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy vowed not to address the media anymore. The decision comes as no surprise to journalists, who have reported on the Chief Minister and his government for the last six months. In fact, it is the latest flashpoint in his tumultuous relationship with the members of the press.

Kumaraswamy announced his decision to stop addressing press conferences at the launch of ‘Badavara Bandhu’ (an interest-free loan scheme for street vendors) in the APMC yard of Yeshwanthpur in Bengaluru. “I am scared to talk about anything these days. We are in a situation in which perhaps, a committee should be constituted to form guidelines on how a Chief Minister speaks to the media. From now on, I will speak to the media from the stage; but I will limit the interactions to just that. I have come to a decision that I won’t address the press for any reason,” he said at the event.

In his first six months as the Chief Minister of the state, Kumaraswamy has repeatedly clashed with the media over a number of issues.

In July, Kumaraswamy blamed the media for trying to divide the state by holding discussions on the demand for a separate North Karnataka state. “My media friends, you are responsible for lighting the fire for protests in North Karnataka with all the discussions on channels. I am not against farmers; I am only quoting the farmers in Koppal, who were protesting for the full farmer loan waiver,” he had told reporters in Bengaluru.

The demand raised by activists in North Karnataka was the subject of numerous articles and television discussions after a bandh was called on August 2 in connection with the issue. This appeared to have irked Kumaraswamy, who claimed that the media intensified the demand for a separate state. Eventually, the bandh was called off a day before it was scheduled to happen.

But the first signs of Kumaraswamy’s indifference towards the media, especially the television channels, had appeared barely two months into his tenure as the Chief Minister.

Around the same time, Kumaraswamy suggested that a separate room would be allocated to journalists to interact with the ministers at Vidhana Soudha. This was interpreted by sections of the media as a gag order to safeguard his ministers from being asked uncomfortable questions.

Kumaraswamy has also repeatedly complained that his statements have been misquoted and misrepresented by the media. In press conferences, he has often blamed the media of conspiring against him and portraying him in a bad light.

Another flashpoint occurred on October 25 when Kumaraswamy, while addressing reporters at the Vidhana Soudha, vented his ire against the media for reporting that the Chief Minister has ordered load-shedding in Gulbarga. Pointing towards a band-aid applied on his right hand, he said, “Look at this (band-aid). This is because of the stress your news is causing me. Without verifying the order with the department, a Kannada news channel announced that I am pushing the state towards darkness,” he said pointing his finger at a Kannada journalist, who raised a query.

He further probed the journalist to produce a government document proving that the state government had ordered load shedding and also asked media personnel to learn Kannada before trying to interpret government orders. “Instead of trying to damage my government’s work, you should learn Kannada and not publish anything that pleases you,” he added.

A week ago, Kumaraswamy’s disagreements with the media came to the fore once again, this time when he appeared to dismiss Jayashree Gurannavar, a woman farmer leader who questioned him about the protests raised by sugarcane farmers in the state earlier this week. The media highlighted Kumaraswamy’s indifference to the plight of farmers and accused him of disrespecting the woman who asked the question.

On Sunday, speaking on the issue at the University of Agriculture Sciences in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy said, “What I meant was why have you woken up to the situation now? Were you sleeping? I would never disrespect women. These are not farmers who are protesting but these are sponsored protests.” He further raised question marks over the protesting farmers and described them as ‘goondas’.

Kumaraswamy’s comment was criticised by farmer leaders and the opposition BJP. This led to Kumaraswamy softening his stance on Monday. “I was hurt when some comments were made about me during the Belagavi protest. But my reaction did not have any mala fide intention. It’s unfortunate that my words were not understood in the way I meant it,” Kumaraswamy told reporters.

Later in the week, Kumaraswamy once again expressed his disdain for the media’s coverage of the issue by claiming that he was being singled out. He also reprimanded the television media for showing visuals of a group of farmers beating an effigy of him with an axe. “I want to ask the TV media what was the meaning of repeatedly showing an effigy of mine being beaten by farmers using an axe in Mudhol? What impact did you think this would have on the people?” he asked in a tone familiar to most journalists reporting from Bengaluru over the last few months.

Kumaraswamy has made no attempts to hide his displeasure with the media, particularly television channels, in his first six months as Chief Minister. He believes that the media has been unfair to him and has distanced himself from the press on a number of occasions.

2 killed in accident on Delhi’s Signature Bridge

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Two medical students on a motorcycle were killed on Friday after ramming into a divider on the new Signature Bridge here and falling into the Yamuna river, police said.

The incident occurred at 8.40 a.m. on the bridge’s left turn loop.

“The deceased have been identified as Satya Vijay Shankaran, 23, and Chandershekhar,26,” Deputy Commissioner of Police A.K. Thakur said.

“They were riding a KTM duke bike at a very high speed. When they took the left turn, the bike lost its balance and hit the divider. With the impact of collision, the two fell off from the bridge. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were declared dead,” the DCP said.

“Being a left turn, the possibility of the victims performing stunts has been ruled out.”

Shankaran, a native of Ranchi, was interning in Hindu Rao Hospital, while Chandershekhar, from south Delhi’s Khanpur, was a second year MBBS student at the Hindu Rao Medical College.

The police found the bike on the bridge.

Congress playing into the hands of anti-nationals: JK BJP

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Reiterating that the Congress is playing into the hands of anti-national forces along with the NC and the PDP, Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP Thursday said Governor Satya Pal Malik foiled their “sinister design” by dissolving the state assembly.

The governor dissolved the assembly Wednesday night, hours after the PDP staked claim to form government with the backing of rival NC and the Congress.

“Congress is playing into the hands of anti-nationals. The Congress along with the NC and the PDP conspired against the democratic forces. The governor has foiled their sinister design,” BJP state president Ravinder Raina told reporters here.

BJP senior leader Kavinder Gupta had Wednesday accused the three parties – the Congress, PDP and NC – of forging an alliance to form a government in the state on “directions of Pakistan.”

Following the BJP charges, J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president G A Mir Thursday asked the BJP to either apologise or make public the evidence on its allegations.

Lauding Malik’s decision to dissolve the assembly, kept in suspended animation since June 19 after imposition of the Governors Rule, Raina said the conspiracy was against nationalistic forces, but it failed.

Raina said the whole conspiracy was hatched against the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions at the behest of Congress bosses in Delhi, but their designs have been exposed, he added.

Raina said the masterminds of the whole conspiracy were Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, Ghulam Nabi Azad and other senior state leaders of the party.

“This has also come to the notice that the Congress party has conspired along with other anti-National forces on the directions of Pakistan,” he added.

Raina said the NC and the PDP on behest of the Congress tried to sabotage the grass root level democratic process in the recent civic body polls, but miserably failed.

He said their grassroots workers were about to contest the civic body polls, but they boycotted it in the name of protecting Article 35 A of the Constitution.

Raina said the democracy has been strengthened in the state of by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday said that he and President Ram Nath Kovind will jointly lay the foundation stone of the Kartarpur corridor project in Dera Baba Nanak area of Gurdaspur district on November 26.

“Happy to share that I’ll be joining President Ram Nath Kovind ji in laying foundation stone for Kartarpur Corridor to International Border at Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, on November 26. It will be a great moment indeed for all devotees of Sri Guru Nanak Dev,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to develop the corridor from Gurdaspur in Punjab to the International Border (IB) to facilitate the passage of pilgrims to the Kartarpur Sahib gurudwara in Pakistan as part of the 550th birth annversary celebrations of the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev, next year.

However, the Centre clarified that India’s decision was not in response to any proposal from Pakistan.

The resolution was passed after many weeks of internal consultations and preparations within the government.

The gurdwara is significant for the Sikh community since Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life in Kartarpur till he died in 1539.

It is located around 2 km from the IB between both countries and can be seen from the Indian side.

Congress distances itself from C.P. Joshi’s remarks

November 23, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Friday distanced itself from senior leader C.P. Joshi’s statement that “only Brahmins know and can talk about Hinduism” with party President Rahul Gandhi saying his remarks were against the ideology of the party and he should apologise for it.

He also warned party leaders to refrain from making any statements which may hurt sentiments of any section of the society.

“C.P. Joshi’s statement is against the ideals of the Congress party. Party leaders should refrain from making any statement which may hurt any section of the society,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

“Respecting the principles of the party and sentiments of its workers, Joshiji would definitely realise his mistake. He should express remorse for his statement.”

Gandhi’s remarks came after a video of Joshi surfaced on Thursday in which he is heard saying that only pandits and brahmins knew about Hinduism and were learned enough to speak about it.

“Does anyone know what is the caste of Uma Bharti? What is the caste of Sadhvi Ritambhara? In this country, if anyone knows about religion, it is the pandits and the brahmins,” Joshi is heard saying in the video.

Trouble brews in Kerala unit of JD(S), party president intervenes

November 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Trouble has been brewing in the Kerala unit of the Janata Dal (S) – the third largest ally of the CPM-led government, prompting the party president to intervene.

JD (S) National President and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has called his three legislators to Bengaluru on Thursday to meet him at 8 p.m.

The three include Mathew T. Thomas, State Minister for Water Resources, former State Minister C.K. Nanu and K. Krishnankutty.

While Thomas continues to remain in the state, both Nanu and Krishnankutty have already left to meet the party chief.

The present impasse began when the Pinarayi Vijayan government completed its two-and-a-half years in office.

According to a section of the JD (S) owing allegiance to Krishnankutty, there was an agreement that Thomas would relinquish the ministership in Krishnankutty’s favour once the government completed the half-way mark of its 5-year term.

However, this claim has been refuted by the Thomas camp.

While Nanu remained aloof for a while, Krishnankutty has now managed to swing him to his side, and both are travelling together to meet their national president.

J&K Assembly dissolved: Congress targets PM

November 22, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for using Governor Satya Pal Malik to dissolve the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly “illegally and unconstitutionally”.

“We strongly condemn the way the Governor illegally and unconstitutionally dissolved the Assembly.

“The Governor has toyed with the Constitution and it was done at the behest of the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO),” Congress leader Manish Tewari told the media here.

The former Union Minister questioned as to why Malik did not dissolve the House in the last six months after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in June withdrew support to the Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) coalition government.

“For the last five-six months, the BJP tried its best to garner support by indulging in horse trading. But when its conspiracy failed to yield any result, it got the Governor to dissolve the Assembly just after the PDP, National Conference and the Congress staked claim to form the government,” Tewari said.

Earlier in the day former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram also targeted Malik saying parliamentary democracy was “outdated” for the BJP-appointed Governor.

“As long as no one staked a claim to form government, Jammu and Kashmir Governor was happy to keep the Assembly under suspension. The moment someone staked a claim, he dissolved the Assembly. Parliamentary democracy standing on its head.

“The Westminster model of democracy is outdated. Like in all other matters, it is the Gujarat model that has appealed to the J&K Governor,” Chidambaram tweeted.

The party also ridiculed the Governor’s defence on Wednesday, when he maintained that “the grand alliance” of PDP, National Conference and Congress was an “opportunistic” one.

“It is unfortunate that the Governor is talking more like a BJP spokesperson than a governor. We strongly condemn his action and demand that elections are held at the earliest for the sake of democracy,” said party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala.

In a dramatic development, Malik late on Wednesday dissolved the Assembly after the three parties staked claim to form the government which was followed by People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone making a rival claim to power with the backing of BJP and rebel PDP MLAs.
