350 US dailies stand up to Trump’s media attacks

August 16, 2018 by Nasheman

At least 350 news outlets have launched a campaign to counter US President Donald Trump’s attacks against the media and promote a free press.

Hundreds of US newspapers, from the Martha’s Vineyard Times to the Dallas Morning News; from the Yankton County Observer in South Dakota to the Bangor Daily News in Maine, devoted print space on Thursday in an joint effort to defend press freedom in the country, CNN reported.

The move was initiated by the Boston Globe for a nationwide denouncement of the President’s “dirty war” against the media, using the hashtag #EnemyOfNone. It pledged to write an editorial “on the dangers of the administration’s assault on the press” and asked others to do the same.

The campaign is significant because it moves the conversation about Trump’s attacks out of Washington and New York and into communities across the country. He often derides media reports as “fake news” and attacks journalists as “enemies of the people”.

The initial positive response from 100 news organisations grew closer to 350 with major US national newspapers and smaller local outlets answering the call, along with international publications like the UK newspaper, the Guardian.

The Boston Globe in its editorial, “Journalists Are Not The Enemy”, argued that a free press had been a core American principle for more than 200 years.

The New York Times in its article, A Free Press Needs You”, called Trump’s attacks “dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy”. It published excerpts from dozens more publications beneath.

The New York Post, answered the Globe’s call by saying “Who are we to disagree?” adding: “It may be frustrating to argue that just because we print inconvenient truths doesn’t mean that we’re fake news, but being a journalist isn’t a popularity contest. All we can do is to keep reporting.”

But it also said: “Will this make a difference? Not one whit”

The Philadelphia Inquirer said its city was the birthplace of US democracy, writing: “If the press is not free from reprisal, punishment or suspicion for unpopular views or information, neither is the country. Neither are its people.”

The Wall Street Journal declined to take part in the campaign.

A poll released by Quinnipiac University showed that most Americans, 65 per cent, regard the news media as an important part of democracy, not an “enemy”. But 26 per cent of respondents, including 51 per cent of Republicans, sided with Trump’s “enemy” rhetoric.

An Ipsos poll, also this month, gave similar figures. In addition it found that 23 per cent of Republicans, and about one in eight Americans overall, believed Trump should close down mainstream news outlets like CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Press freedom groups have been sounding alarms about the threats posed by Trump’s dehumanizing language.

He certainly ramped up the pressure on mainstream media with numerous tweets. The Trump Twitter Archive says he has tweeted 281 times so far using the term “fake news”.

Former Prime Minister Vajpayee dead at 93

August 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a moderate face in saffron politics and the first non-Congress prime minister to complete a full term in office, died here on Thursday after a prolonged illness, AIIMS authorities said. He was 93.

“It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 5.05 p.m. on 16.08.2018,” an AIIMS press statement said.

The statement said Vajpayee was admitted on June 11 and was stable in the last nine weeks. “Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support system. Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today.”

Vajpayee, a diabetic patient, was undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). His condition worsened further on Wednesday evening with leaders from across the political spectrum thronging the hospital and enquiring about his health.

The former Prime Minister, whose birthday on December 25 is celebrated as Good Governance Day, was honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 2014 at his home.

He was Prime Minister for 13 days in mid-1996 when he was forced to resign ahead of the confidence vote for which he did not have the numbers.

Vajpayee again became the Prime Minister in March 1998 but his government fell 13 months later on the floor of the Lok Sabha losing by one vote in the confidence motion after AIADMK headed by the late J.Jayalalithaa withdrew support to the BJP.

The BJP government headed by Vajpayee returned to power in 1999 and completed its full term till 2014.

CM hails Kannadigas’ spirit for a united Karnataka

August 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Wednesday said the JD-S-Congress coalition government was committed to the development of the entire state, asserting that he has allocated more funds for all the regions than previous governments had done.

The Chief Minister hailed Kannadigas for their spirit of unity and strong will against attempts to divide the state.

“I have an emotional bonding with Belagavi (around 500km northwest of Bengaluru, bordering Maharashtra), where the state’s first legislative session was held in 2006 during my previous tenure,” he said in his address at the Sam Manekshaw Parade ground in Bangaluru on the occasion of the country’s 72nd Independence Day.

“I salute the spirit of unity demonstrated by Kannadigas against the division of Karnataka. Their strong will has silenced the feeble voices of a division of the state before they become louder,” said Kumaraswamy.

Giving an assurance on addressing problems of the people living in Goa, Kasaragod in Kerala and Solapur in Maharashtra, Kumaraswamy said he would address them in talks with his counterparts from the three states.

“The state government aims to improve the human development index of all districts across the state. Besides basic infrastructure, amenities like education, health, and social security for all are our priority,” he said.

On the Rs 49,000-crore crop loan waiver to distressed farmers, the chief minister said an official order would soon be issued on it for loans raised from state-run banks, benefiting 20.4-lakh farmers across the state.

“The state government has already waived loan raised from cooperative banks. The new order will be issued to waive loans from the state-run banks,” he noted.

Depreciating rupee will kill small businesses: Mamata

August 16, 2018 by Nasheman

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said the devalued rupee will lead to increase of oil import bills and small businesses will be killed further post the demonetisation.

She also said farmers’ distress will be compounded as the rupee fell further on Thursday to a new record low beyond Rs 70.20 against the dollar but recovered soemwhat later.

“Rupee crashes to its lowest ever. We are very concerned. Oil imports bill will now jump.

“Prices for vegetables will go up. After demonetisation disaster and now rupee slide, informal sector and small businesses will be further killed. Farmer distress will be compounded,” Banerjee said in a tweet.

The wider trade deficit, along with recent outflow of foreign funds, weakened the Indian rupee to a fresh record low.

At 10.45 a.m., the rupee recovered to 70.23 after it had plunged to 70.32-33 — the lowest ever mark — against the greenback on the back of an apparent intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

At the end of the intra-bank trade session on Tuesday, the rupee strengthened by four paise at 69.90 against the dollar, compared to Monday’s close of 69.94 per greenback.

300 priests accused of abusing thousands of children in US

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Internal documents from six Catholic dioceses in the US state of Pennsylvania showed that over 300 “predator priests” have been credibly accused of sexually abusing thousands of children, according to a grand jury report.

“We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands,” CNN quoted the report as saying on Tuesday.

“Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted.”

The lengthy report investigates clergy sexual abuse dating back to 1947 in six dioceses: Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Scranton.

According to the report, the accused priests victimised boys, girls, teens and pre-pubescent children.

Some victims were plied with alcohol and groped or molested while others were raped.

“There have been other reports about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church. But never on this scale,” the grand jurors wrote in Tuesday’s report.

At a news conference announcing the report’s release, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro called it the “largest, most comprehensive report into child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church ever produced in the US”.

The report comes as the Catholic Church, including Pope Francis, is struggling to contain a sexual abuse scandal rapidly consuming the church on several continents.

In Australia, a bishop has been found guilty of covering up sexual abuse.

In Chile, the Pope was forced to recant his dismissal of an abuse scandal involving a prominent priest and bishops accused of covering up his crimes.

All is not well between father and son

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Two recent statements made by JDS national president HD Deve Gowda and Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy have raised questions whether all is not well in the first family of the state’s ruling party.

According to the sources, HDD is keen to field Prajwal Revanna from Hassan constituency in the upcoming Loksabha election. He has made his intention clear in this regard. With this, Gowda is likely to contest from the Mandya, which is another strong belt of the JDS.

But HDK is not keen on fielding Prajwal, it is said. When he was questioned about the same in Haradanahalli in Hassan he informed that Prajwal will be fielded only if such a scenario emerges. Adding to this HDD in Hassan announced that HDK will move to national politics if any crisis emerges. But HDK refuted the statement and made it clear that he will never move to the national politics.

According to the sources in the party, HDD is under pressure from daughter-in-law Bhavani Revanna on lack of political representation to her husband and son. β€œShe is pressurizing the senior Gowda to field Prajwal from Hassan. But HDK is against it,” said sources.

The Goa government will soon announce an employment policy aimed at ensuring job for every youth in the coastal state, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Wednesday.

Parrikar, who is currently in the US undergoing treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer, in his Independence Day speech via a video message, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance government for its assistance in creating large-scale infrastructure projects in Goa.

“This year we have planned a new action plan for employment for our youth involving affirmative action, which includes providing employment subsidy for industries which employ Goan youth,” Parrikar said in his message.

Regarding infrastructure, Parrikar said that Goa had scaled great heights, thanks to the Centre’s support.

“Today, Goa has reached a different level altogether at every parameter vis-a-vis infrastructure, thanks to Rs 10,000-20,000 crore assistance from the Centre. Today, with the Mandovi bridge, Zuari bridge, National Highway 17, National Highway 4A, in all these places people can see a lot of development and the projects will be completed at the pre-decided time, without delay in a year or two,” the Chief Minister.

Parrikar also said that efforts were on to improve the quality of education in the state.
