Ajmer dargah terror attack: NIA gives clean chit to Indresh, Pragya

April 4, 2017 by Nasheman

Indresh Pragya

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has cleared senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Indresh Kumar, radical Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and two others of all charges in the 2007 Ajmer dargah terror attack case in which three persons were killed. The NIA said no evidence was found against them.

In its supplementary closure report filed in the NIA Special Court here on Monday, the agency said it did not find any role of Mr. Kumar, Sadhvi Pragya, Ramesh Venkatrao and Samandar alias Rajendra Chaudhary in carrying out the blast at the 13th century shrine of Sufi mystic Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.

Special judge Dinesh Gupta fixed April 17 for deciding whether the court would accept or reject the closure report.

NIA’s failure

The court also expressed displeasure over the NIA’s inability to arrest three absconding accused, who figure in the agency’s list of most-wanted people with cash rewards against them.

The suspects on the run are Sandeep Dange, Suresh Nair and Ram Chandra Kalsangra. The court asked the NIA Director-General to file a progress report on the efforts to arrest the three fugitives.

The NIA Special Court had on March 22 sentenced RSS activists Bhavesh Patel and Devendra Gupta to life imprisonment after convicting them of carrying out the explosion inside the dargah during the month of Ramadan on October 11, 2007. Seven accused, including former RSS activist Aseemanand, were acquitted in the case.

Can’t release water to Tamil Nadu, says CM Siddaramaiah

April 3, 2017 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday reiterated the state’s inability to release Cauvery water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu, saying there was no sufficient water in the state’s reservoirs at present.

An official delegation from Tamil Nadu on Saturday held meetings with Karnataka chief secretary Subhash Khuntia and other state government officials in Bengaluru, with a request to release 3 tmcft of Cauvery water on humanitarian grounds.

“Their (Tamil Nadu) officials had come… they have had meeting with our chief secretary. We have explained to them that there is no water in our Cauvery reservoirs. We have told them that if there are rains and we get water, we will give for drinking,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.

He said “now, we don’t have water to give them.”

A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra on March 21 said all interim orders of releasing 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water by Karnataka would continue to be in force till further orders.

Following this, Karnataka had expressed its inability in supplying Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in line with the apex court’s directive, saying the state itself is facing a shortage of drinking water.

Meanwhile, former chief minister SM Krishna, who recently joined the BJP,termed as “correct” the state’s stand not to release water to Tamil Nadu, citing the reason that water level in the reservoirs was just enough for drinking water needs.

Noting that Tamil Nadu’s main intention was to get the Cauvery Management Board created, former chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy hit out at the state government and the ruling BJP at the Centre and its MPs for not taking the issue “seriously”.

Pointing at a protest by Tamil Nadu farmers in Delhi, he said, “the central government can take decision at any time… they (Congress and BJP) are more interested in winning the polls (by-polls).”

The Supreme Court will on July 11 commence the final hearing of the appeals filed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala against the 2007 award of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal on sharing of water for 15 consecutive workings days.

Former Samajwadi Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia joins BJP

April 3, 2017 by Nasheman

gaurav bhatia

New Delhi: Former spokesperson of Samajwadi Party (SP) Gaurav Bhatia, who had quit the party five days before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, formally joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday.

Once a prominent party face on the television batting for his erstwhile SP, Bhatia joined the saffron party in the presence of BJP national secretary Bhupendra Yadav and national general secretary Arun Singh at the party headquarters in New Delhi.

Bhatia also met BJP president Amit Shah later during the day.

The BJP, however, remained mum on the role of Bhatia in the party.

On Sunday, Bhatia said, “The SP was moving away from the ideals of Ram Manohar Lohia. There is no value of loyalty and sincerity and it has been surrendered to dynastic politics.”

A Supreme Court lawyer, Bhatia, who was appointed as additional advocate general of the UP government led by then chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah for inspiring him to join the party.

He was also the national president of the legal cell of the SP.

BJP swept the UP assembly elections and returned to power after 14 years by winning 312 seats while the SP-Congress alliance got 54 seats.

Bhatia, however, refrained from launching any personal attack on former UP chief minister or his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Bhatia resigned from all posts of the SP on February 5 in the run up to the elections saying that it was becoming difficult for him to continue serving the party.

He then accused the SP of compromising the very principles of democracy, secularism and socialism that he had had strong belief in.

At the time of his resignation, Bhatia refused to disclose the reason why he was leaving the party.

Attacks on Nigerians ‘xenophobic, racial’: African envoys to India

April 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Nigerians attacked

New Delhi: In a strong reaction to attacks on African nationals, heads of African missions in India termed the incidents as “xenophobic and racial” and asserted that no known, sufficient and visible deterring measures have been taken by the government.

The envoys, who recently held a “special” meeting on the incidents, called for an independent investigation by the Human Rights Council as well as other human rights bodies and also to comprehensively report the matter to the Commission of the African Union.

They said they expectated a strong condemnation from the highest political level both nationally and locally. A press release dated March 31 from the office of the dean of the African group head of the missions here, said the meeting was convened to look into the recent attacks against African students in Greater Noida.

“The meeting unanimously agreed that those accumulated attacks against Africans are xenophobic and racial in nature,” they said. They reviewed the incidents that have taken place in the past and concluded that no known, sufficient and visible deterring measures were taken by the Indian government, it said.

Condemning the recent attacks, they expressed their deep concern and also noted that these “reprehensible events, both outstanding and unresolved cases against Africans, were not sufficiently condemned by the Indian authorities”.

There are missions of more than 50 African countries which are accredited to India. Four Nigerian students were attacked by a group of Greater Noida residents who took out a candle-light march last after a 17-year-old boy Manish died due to suspected drug overdose.

The protest march was taken out after the police released some Nigerians detained for questioning in connection with death of Manish, a class 12 student, due to “lack of evidence”.

Petrol price cut by Rs 3.77 a litre, diesel by Rs 2.91

April 1, 2017 by Nasheman

petrol-price

New Delhi: The price of petrol is cut by Rs 3.77 per litre and that of diesel by Rs 2.91 a litre, the first change in rates in two-and-a-half months.

State-owned oil firms cut rates with effect from midnight tonight. Petrol currently costs Rs 71.14 a litre in Delhi and Diesel is priced at Rs 59.02 per litre.

Petrol price will be cut by Rs 3.77 per litre, excluding state levies, said Indian Oil Corp (IOC). Actual decrease will be larger after taking into account the local levies. Similarly, diesel rate was cut by Rs 2.91, excluding state levies.

Rates were last revised on January 16 when price of petrol went up by 54 paise. On that date, diesel rates were hiked by Rs 1.20 a litre.

“The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and INR-USD exchange rate warrant decrease in selling price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision,” IOC said in a statement.

IOC said the movement of prices in the international oil market and INR-USD exchange rate shall continue to be monitored closely and developing trends of the market will be reflected in future price changes.

Bizarre: Life term for killing cows, CM Vijay Rupani says want ‘vegetarian’ Gujarat

April 1, 2017 by Nasheman

vijay rupani

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government Friday amended the state’s Animal Preservation Bill to entail a maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a minimum of 10 years for cow slaughter after it was passed in the assembly in the absence of the Opposition Congress and with the visitors’ gallery packed with saffron-clad Hindu priests.

Speaking on the amendment, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that while he was “not against any food”, he wanted to make Gujarat “shakahari (vegetarian)”, “We do not want Jersey cows, but Gir and Kankreji cows instead,” he said.

Rupani also described Gujarat as a “unique state”, which followed the tenets of Mahatma Gandhi — “non-violence and truth”. “This is Gandhi’s Gujarat, Sardar’s (Vallabhbhai Patel) Gujarat and (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi’s Gujarat,” said Rupani.

The passage of the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 2017 came eight months after seven Dalits were beaten by self-styled cow vigilantes for alleged cow slaughter in Una.

The punishment for cow slaughter under the earlier law was imprisonment ranging from three to seven years. The new law also makes offences under the amended Act non-bailable.

The amendment was cleared after the Speaker suspended members of the Congress for creating a ruckus before the Bill was passed.

When the amendment Bill was introduced over a month ago, it had a maximum punishment of ten years imprisonment. On Friday, however, the ruling BJP moved to enhance the punishment to a life-term.

In another major amendment, the Bill included a provision that vehicles caught in transporting cows, beef or beef products illegally will be forfeited to the state government. The maximum fine for the offence has also been increased from Rs 50,000 to one ranging from Rs 1 lakh-Rs 5 lakh.

Besides, the punishment for conviction for illegal transportation of cow, beef or beef products has been increased from three years imprisonment to seven years.

The Act allows transportation of animals of cow progeny with permission, but not between 7 pm and 5 am.

The statement of the Bill reads, “In the year 2011, the State Government had made certain amendments in the said Act for better implementation of the Act. It is, however, experienced while implementing the said Act that still more stringent provisions are required to be made by amending the said Act for curbing the menace of illegal slaughtering of the animals covered under the said Act to provide for more stringent punishment and effectively check the rampant use of vehicles for transporting such animals.”

During the discussion on the Bill, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said, “This is not a Bill, but a feeling of crores of Indians. It is my humble attempt to give voice to the cows being killed by butchers. A single drop of cow blood falling on earth pains Hindus. With this law, Vijaybhai Rupani’s government will make Gujarat cow-slaughter-free.”

Jadeja also offered his respects to the “Hindu saints” in the visitors gallery, and said that he was “feeling proud as a Hindu” to introduce the Bill in the House.

One of those present in the gallery, Kaniramji Bapu of Dudhrej in Surendranagar district, an important religious seat of the maldhari community (cattle herders) in Gujarat, said, “We oppose cow slaughter and believe in its preservation. And so, we came here in support of the Act. Cows should be preserved and their slaughtering must end.”

Another religious figure, Mahant Vikramgiri from Ghela-Somnath of Jasdan in Rajkot district, said, “Around 300 sadhu-sants have come to Assembly. Since the government had announced that they will bring the Bill, we knew it in advance and are here to support it.”

In 2011, when Narendra Modi was chief minister of Gujarat, the state government had imposed a complete ban on slaughter of cows, transportation and selling of cow meat by amending the Act.
