Wear hijab in madrassas and at home, not in schools, colleges, it won’t be tolerated: Pragya

Wear hijab in madrassas and at home, not in schools, colleges, it won't be tolerated: Pragya
BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur |

Bhopal: Amid a row over hijab in Karnataka, BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur on Wednesday said headscarves will not be tolerated if they are worn in educational institutions other than madrassas.

The Lok Sabha member from Bhopal also said that Hindus worship women and don’t see them in evil manner.

Thakur was speaking at a function in a temple in Barkheda Pathani area here.

“You have madrassas. We have nothing to do if you wear hijab or apply khijab (hair colour) there (in madrassas). You wear the attire required there and follow their discipline. But if you distort the knowledge and discipline of schools and colleges in the country and start wearing hijab and applying khijab then it will not be tolerated,” she said.

The disciples of ‘gurukul’ (traditional Hindu educational institutions) wear ‘bhagwa’ (saffron) attire, but when such students go to other schools, they wear the school uniform and follow the discipline of the educational institutions, she added.

Thakur said that khijab is used for hiding the greying hair, while hijab is meant to cover faces.

“Hijab is a purdah. Purdah should be (used) against those who see you with evil eyes. But it is certain that Hindus don’t see them with evil eyes as they worship women,” she said.

In ‘sanatan dharma’, the place where women are not revered is like a crematorium, Thakur said while chanting a ‘shloka’ (verse).

“You should wear hijab in your homes,” she added while citing the marriage customs among Muslims.

DHARWAD: The district has lost another prominent writer and poet in Chennaveer Kanavi (93) on Wednesday morning at SDM hospital in Sattur at Dharwad.

Kanavi was suffering from age-related health issues and was also tested positive for the Covid-19.

He was shifted to the hospital in January due to difficulty in breathing and a couple of days later, he tested positive for Covid. Upon treatment, Kanavi’s Covid test returned negative but his health deteriorated due to the infection in his chest and weaker condition of other body parts.

The District administration is planning to keep the mortal remains at KCD for public viewing until the last rites are performed at the writer’s farmhouse in Kelgeri. Kanavi’s wife was also cremated at the same farmhouse after her passing recently.

Speaking to TNIE senior writer Siddalinga Pattanshetty said that he was impressed when he saw Kanavi at the government school and later followed him and his writings beginning with Navyadvani which was edited by Kanavi and the past principal Gokak sir.

“He is the person who remained as a model for other writers. His innocence, politeness and humble character inspire young writers. My most memorable incident involving him is when Kanavi and the former vice-chancellor Pavate sir invited Kuvempu for the 1957 Sahitya Sammelana held in Dharwad. Without their intervention, it would not have been possible to witness Kuvempu at the Sammelana,” he added.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other eminent guests visited the hospital during his hospitalization.

Kanavi was born on June 28, 1928, in Hombal village in Gadag district, while his education and career shaped in Dharwad. He is survived by five children.

Among Kanavi’s writings, Jeeva Dhwani Maduchandra, Nanna Desha Nanna Jana, Sahitya Chintana, Samatholana among others are very popular and have inspired literature lovers.

Numerous awards including Sahitya Akademi, Rajyotsava award, Maasti award and Doctorates by various universities have been presented to Kanavi for his work.

MUMBAI: Singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, who popularised disco music in India in the 80s and 90s, has died following multiple health issues, a doctor treating him said on Wednesday. He was 69.

Lahiri died on Tuesday night at the CritiCare Hospital in Juhu.

Hijab row: Karnataka BJP allegedly shares details of girls who approached HC, then deletes tweet

February 16, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party allegedly shared the personal details of the girls from Udupi including their residential addresses who had approached the Karnataka High Court against the ban on wearing of hijabs in classrooms.

Apparently after coming under criticism, the party deleted its tweets in English as well as Kannada.

The party had tweeted, “Five of the students involved in #HijabRow are minors. Don’t CONgress leaders Sonia, Rahul & Priyanka have any guilt for using minor girls to stay relevant in politics? How low will they stoop to win elections? Is this what “Ladki hoo lad sakti hoon” means, @priyankagandhi?” Along with the tweet, the party put out the personal details of the girls from Udupi, who had filed petitions in the High Court.

Taking a strong view against BJP’s Karnataka unit, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted, “Shameless @BJP4Karnataka tweets the addresses of the minor girls in order to attack the opposition. Do you’ll realise how insensitive, sick and pathetic this is? I request @DgpKarnataka and @TwitterIndia to take action and take down the tweet. Also seek @GoI_MeitY intervention.”

The Rajya Sabha member also demanded that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights take this up immediately.

“This is a criminal act to share names and addresses of minors. This is unacceptable,” Chaturvedi further tweeted.

Karnataka is witnessing a row over Hijab versus Saffron scarves, which started since December end in Udupi in coastal Karnataka.

On January 1, six girl students of a college in Udupi attended a press conference held by Campus Front of India (CFI) in the coastal town protesting against the college authorities denying them entry into the classroom by wearing Hijab.

This was four days after they requested the principal permission to wear Hijabs in classes which was not allowed.

Till then, students used to wear Hijab to the campus and entered the classroom after removing the scarves, the college principal Rudre Gowda had said.

“The institution did not have any rule on Hijab-wearing as such and since no one used to wear it to the classroom in the last 35 years. The students who came with the demand had the backing of outside forces,” Rudre Gowda had said.

The full bench of the Karnataka High Court where the girls had petitioned is hearing the matter on day-to-day basis.

The Court, in its interim order pending consideration of all petitions related to the hijab row, last week restrained all the students from wearing saffron shawls, scarves, hijab and any religious flag within the classroom.
