75-Year-Old Woman Raped, Brutally Assaulted In Kerala; 3 Arrested

A 75-year-old woman was raped and brutally assaulted in Kerala’s rural Ernakulam on Sunday, police said. The doctors at a private medical college hospital, where the elderly woman is being treated, said that her condition has improved slightly.

“The condition of the woman has improved slightly and her vital signs are returning to normal. There is improvement in her mental state too,” said a medical bulletin issued by the hospital.

The police have arrested three persons in connection with the incident. A 66-year-old woman is among those arrested, they said.

The septuagenarian was raped at the house of one of the accused, according to the police.

“While one of the accused raped her, the other, who was drunk, assaulted her brutally. This happened at the house of one of the accused,” K Karthick, District Police Chief, Rural Ernakulam, told NDTV.

“The woman also has certain mental health and memory loss issues,” he said.

The woman underwent emergency surgeries at the hospital on Monday.

A detailed medical examined showed the woman, who was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night, had suffered deep wounds in her private parts, as well as injuries on her chest and stomach areas.

Heavy rains across several districts in Karnataka, especially areas near the coast, have led to water level rising in the rivers. The state government has opened the gates of a massive dam in Uttar Kannada district to release water and avoid flooding the banks of the Kalinadi and Kadra rivers. Water from other dams has been released too.

The water level in many rivers is above the danger mark. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who is being treated for COVID-19 infection in a hospital, has released Rs 50 crore for initial flood relief work amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The districts that saw heavy rains are Kodagu, Gokarana, Chickmangaluru, Hassan and Mysuru.

The coastal districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have been badly hit, with the adjoining Kodagu district also bearing the brunt of heavy rains. Belgavi, which borders Maharashtra, and other northern districts are also badly affected.

Ahmedabad COVID-19 hospital fire leaves 8 patients dead

Ahmedabad: A blaze in the wee hours at a private hospital here has left eight COVID-19 patients dead, a fire brigade official said on Thursday.

The victims include five men and three women, who were being treated at the ICU ward of the COVID-19 designated Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad, the official said.

Fire broke out around 3.30 am on the fourth floor of the four-storey hospital, he said. Around 40 other COVID-19 patients at the facility were rescued and shifted to a civic hospital in the city, he said.

“Eight coronavirus patients admitted in the ICU ward of Shrey Hospital have died due to the fire, which has been doused,” said an official of the Ahmedabad Fire Department.

Primary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, police said.

“Forensic experts have arrived at the site for a detailed investigation,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police L B Zala.

Shrey Hospital is among the around 60 private hospitals designated as COVID-19 hospitals by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar, who reached the spot soon after the fire broke out, said an electric short circuit led to the blaze, which spread in the ICU ward within minutes.

Principal Health Secretary Jayanti Ravi also reached the spot and assured a thorough probe into the incident. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

In a statement, the CMO saidthe probe will be conducted by two IAS officers, Additional Chief Secretary in Home Department Sangeeta Singh and ACS in Urban Development Department Mukesh Puri.

They have been asked to submit a report in three days, the statement said.

With 1,073 new coronavirus positive cases, Gujarat’s COVID-19 tally reached 66,777 on Wednesday. The number of deceased has gone up to 2,557, an official said.

Ajman (UAE): A massive fire that broke out in a fruits and vegetables market in Ajman on Wednesday evening has been put out. 

According to an official of the Ajman Civil Defence, the blaze was brought under control in three hours. A cooling operation is still ongoing at the site.

Firefighters from civil defence stations in Dubai, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain joined the Ajman force in battling the blaze.

The fire broke out in the emirate’s new industrial area. Several fire engines were seen rushing to the spot to put out the blaze.

The Ajman civil defence had earlier urged motorists to take alternative routes.

“Ajman firefighters cordoned off the site and used water and foam in extinguishing the blaze which spread to several shops at the market,” sources told Khaleej Times.

About 200 kg gold, worth over 100 crores, had been sneaked into the country from the UAE, the National Investigation Agency, one of central agencies probing the smuggling of gold through the diplomatic channel in Kerala, said today, while countering the bail petition of a key accused in the case.

The NIA said using the diplomatic channel process, gold was smuggled around 20 times between November 2019 and January 2020.

The probe agency said the act was intentional, and that the accused Swapna Suresh and Sarith, while working with the UAE consulate, were aware of the possibility of smuggling gold through diplomatic channel as early as June 2019 and they had intimated this to the other accused. Even after Swapna Suresh was removed from the post, she continued to involve herself for the sake of facilitating such subversive activities, according to the NIA.

“The accused colluded and conspired to make use of this channel to smuggle gold along with materials genuinely required by the foreign diplomats at UAE consulate,” the probe agency said.

Among the articles seized from the accused, NIA said, were “USD 8,034, 701.5 Oman Riyals and Fixed deposits receipts to the tune of around Rs 51 lakh recovered from the bag of Swapna Suresh. Cash to the tune of about Rs 1 crore and gold to the tune of nearly one kg was seized from the bank locker. The total seizure worth exceeds Rs 2 crore.”

Swapna Suresh, who had filed the bail petition, alleged she had been implicated in the crime without any basis. She also alleged the case was the offshoot of political rivalry between the state and centre.

The NIA, in its counter to the bail, has said that their deliberate acts of using the diplomatic baggage of UAE as a cover to transport the contraband has affected the friendly relations with the UAE and that they have threatened “monetary stability of India” and that it’s suspected that they used the proceeds for “financing terrorism”.

The NIA has also justified the use of anti-terror law UAPA against this ‘intentional’ crime.

“Petitioner has contacts with many influential persons in society. She is capable to move and abscond even at the time of this pandemic. There is a chance the petitioner may tamper the evidence and influencing the witnesses”, the NIA said, while countering the bail petition of Swapna Suresh.

The racket was uncovered with the seizure of around 30 kg gold worth about Rs 15 crore, by the customs department at the Thiruvananthapuram airport on July 4. The gold was found in diplomatic baggage linked to the United Arab Emirates consulate in the state.

Sources say that they have submitted a list of names of “people of interest” with the central government. These people, according to sources, are currently in the UAE and need to be questioned in connection to the gold smuggling case probe.

A senior Mumbai police official has claimed that Sushant Singh Rajput’s brother-in-law, an IPS officer, had asked him to pressurise the actor’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty to end their relationship.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Paramjitsingh Dahiya told a TV channel that OP Singh, brother-in-law of Sushant Rajput and senior IPS officer of Haryana police, had made the request in February this year.

Sushant Singh Rajput, 34, was found dead at his apartment in suburban Bandra on June 14.

“Singh asked me to call Rhea Chakraborty to the police station informally and pressurise her,” said Mr Dahiya, who was the zonal police head of Bandra region till April 1.

Mr Dahiya said Mr Singh allegedly told him that Sushant Singh Rajput’s family felt Rhea Chakraborty was “controlling” the actor and wanted her out of his life.

Mr Dahiya said the actor’s family did not submit a written complaint. He said OP Singh made the informal request (to pressurise Rhea Chakraborty) to him through WhatsApp messages on February 18 and 25.

The DCP said Mr Singh visited Mumbai on February 5 and allegedly told him to inform Sushant Singh Rajput that he was in Mumbai. He also requested that a person called Miranda be kept in a day’s police custody, without any complaint or investigation, Mr Dahiya claimed.

The DCP said he “politely and firmly” told Mr Singh that it was not possible for him to call anyone to the police station and keep him in custody as it was against procedure.

Mr Dahiya said he asked Mr Singh to file a written complaint based on which the matter would be investigated. “The written complaint never came,” he added.

Sushant Rajput’s father KK Singh has released a video saying he alerted Mumbai police on February 25 that his sons life was in danger.

On Monday, Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh said the family didn’t raise any suspicion when the city police recorded their statements on June 16. “At that moment, they didn’t raise any suspicion and also didn’t complain about any lapse in our investigation,” he said.

At least a dozen candidates from Jammu and Kashmir qualified for the 2019 UPSC civil services examination, the results of which were declared on Tuesday.

Six of these candidates hail from Kashmir, including a girl from remote Kupwara district in north of the Valley.

In a congratulatory message, Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu conveyed his warm felicitation to all the successful candidates for the commendable accomplishment and expressed hope that they would discharge their duties with utmost dedication, commitment and sincerity to uphold the highest traditions of the civil services.

“Their achievement would certainly motivate and inspire many more youths from Jammu and Kashmir to take the country’s prestigious civil services examination in years to come,” he said.

Nadia Beigh from Kupwara cleared the prestigious examination in her second attempt. She secured 350th rank.

“It has been a daunting journey. It was my second attempt. I could not pass the prelims in 2018. Prayers of several people were with me and I want to thank all of them,” she said.

Ms Beigh said nothing was impossible if one focuses on his or her goal and work hard.

“I hope many people will be inspired by my success. I want to say that nothing is impossible in the world. If you focus on a goal and work hard for something, you will achieve it. It was my dream and I worked very hard. I feel very happy,” she said.

The other successful candidates from Kashmir Valley include Asif Yousuf Tantray from south Kashmir’s Kulgam who got 328 rank, Aftab Rasool from Trehgam Kupwara got 412 rank, Sabzar Ahmad Ganie from Kokernag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag got 628 rank, Rayees Hussain Lone from Gurez area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district and Majid Iqbal Khan, a resident of Shangus in Anantnag, got 638 rank.

While there are at least six successful candidates from Kashmir this year, there was none from the Valley in the list of successful candidates in the 2018 examination.

The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC) led by Sajad Gani Lone also congratulated the candidates.

“We congratulate Ms Nadia Beigh from Punzwa and Aftab Rasool from Trehgam in Handwara for qualifying the prestigious IAS. It is a proud moment for their families and people of the entire district,” the JKPC said on Twitter.

IAS officer Sehrish Asgar, Director, Information, Jammu and Kashmir, also congratulated the proud candidates.

“My heartfelt congratulations to all those who have qualified CSE 2019..My prayers and good wishes for your career ahead..Its heartening to see so many girls in the list…May you all shine…,” she tweeted.

“Many congratulations to you Nadia (Beigh)..You have made us proud…,” she said in another tweet.

COVID-19 pandemic created largest disruption of education in history, affecting 1.6 billion students

United Nations: The COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education in history, affecting nearly 1.6 billion students in all countries and continents and an additional 23.8 million children and youth could drop out or not have access to school next year due to the pandemic’s economic impact alone, the UN Secretary General’s policy brief on education said.

Education is the key to personal development and the future of societies. It unlocks opportunities and narrows inequalities. It is the bedrock of informed, tolerant societies, and a primary driver of sustainable development. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the largest disruption of education ever, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in a video statement launching his policy brief on Education and COVID19′ on Tuesday.

He said that in mid-July, schools were closed in more than 160 countries, affecting over 1 billion students and at least 40 million children worldwide have missed out on education in their critical pre-school year.

The policy brief said that the pandemic has exacerbated education disparities and learning losses due to prolonged school closures threaten to erase progress made in recent decades, not least for girls and young women.

Some 23.8 million additional children and youth (from pre-primary to tertiary) could drop out or not have access to school next year due to the pandemic’s economic impact alone, the brief said.

Guterres said as the world faces unsustainable levels of inequality, we need education the great equaliser more than ever. We must take bold steps now, to create inclusive, resilient, quality education systems fit for the future.

Guterres voiced concern that parents, especially women, have been forced to assume heavy care burdens in the home and despite the delivery of lessons by radio, television and online, and the best efforts of teachers and parents, many students remain out of reach.

Learners with disabilities, those in minority or disadvantaged communities, displaced and refugee students and those in remote areas are at highest risk of being left behind, he said.

The UN chief underlined that the world already faced a learning crisis before the pandemic as more than 250 million school-age children were out of school and only a quarter of secondary school children in developing countries were leaving school with basic skills.

Now we face a generational catastrophe that could waste untold human potential, undermine decades of progress, and exacerbate entrenched inequalities. The knock-on effects on child nutrition, child marriage and gender equality, among others, are deeply concerning, he said.

Launching the policy brief, he said it focuses on a new campaign with education partners and United Nations agencies called Save our Future’ and decisions that governments and partners take now will have lasting impact on hundreds of millions of young people, and on the development prospects of countries for decades to come.

The campaign will amplify the voices of children and young people and urge governments worldwide to recognise investment in education as critical to COVID-19 recovery.

The policy brief calls for action in four key areas of reopening schools, prioritising education in financing decisions, targeting the hardest to reach and future of education.

On reopening schools, the brief says that once local transmission of COVID-19 is under control, getting students back into schools and learning institutions as safely as possible must be a top priority.

The UN has issued guidance to help governments in this complex endeavour and Guterres said it will be essential to balance health risks against risks to children’s education and protection, and to factor in the impact on women’s labour force participation.

He also stressed that consultation with parents, carers, teachers and young people is fundamental.

On prioritising education in financing decisions, Guterres said that before the crisis hit, low and middle-income countries already faced an education funding gap of USD 1.5 trillion dollars a year and this gap has now grown further.

Education budgets need to be protected and increased. And it is critical that education is at the heart of international solidarity efforts, from debt management and stimulus packages to global humanitarian appeals and official development assistance, Guterres said.

The brief’s focus of targeting the hardest to reach emphasizes that education initiatives must seek to reach those at greatest risk of being left behind — people in emergencies and crises; minority groups of all kinds; displaced people and those with disabilities.

They should be sensitive to the specific challenges faced by girls, boys, women and men, and should urgently seek to bridge the digital divide, Guterres said.

The brief also highlights that the future of education is here and there is a generational opportunity to reimagine education.

We can take a leap towards forward-looking systems that deliver quality education for all as a springboard for the Sustainable Development Goals, Guterres said adding that to achieve this, there is a need to invest in digital literacy and infrastructure.

The brief notes that to cope better with future crises, governments should strengthen the resilience of education systems by placing a strong focus on equity and inclusion; and on reinforce capacities for risk management. Failure to do so poses major risks to international peace and stability, it said.

New Delhi: India’s COVID-19 tally increased to 18,55,745 with 52,050 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, while the recoveries crossed the 12-lakh mark on Tuesday, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to COVID-19 climbed to 38,938 with 803 fresh fatalities being reported in 24-hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

A total of 12,30,509 people have recovered, while there are 5,86,298 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country presently.

The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients has risen to 66.31 per cent, while the fatality rate has further dropped to 2.10 pc, the data stated.

The total number of confirmed cases also includes foreigners. This is the sixth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 50,000

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 2,08,64,750 samples have been tested up to August 2 with 6,61,892 samples being tested on Monday, the highest done in a day so far, Scientist and media coordinator at ICMR, Dr Lokesh Sharma, said.

“A total of 1,05,32,074 tests for detection of coronavirus infection have been performed with per day average of 3,39,744 tests in July, the highest number of tests conducted in a month so far,” Sharma said.

There are 917 labs in the government sector and 439 labs in the private sector for conducting COVID-19 tests.

Bengaluru: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors.

The 71-year-old leader of opposition in the state assembly has requested all those who have come into contact with him to quarantine themselves.

“I have been tested positive for #Covid19 & also been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution. I request all those who had come in contact with me to check out for symptoms & to quarantine themselves,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Siddaramaiah’s son Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah said his father had a fever since Monday morning and was admitted to hospital in the night.

“He was confirmed with corona infection after the antigen test was conducted,” he said in a tweet.

Siddaramaiah has also been admitted to Manipal Hospital where Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa is undergoing treatment for coronavirus.

Yediyurappa was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night after he tested positive for coronavirus, and doctors have said he was “doing well” and is “clinically stable”.

State Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar tweeted wishing for Siddaramaiah’s speedy recovery and said he was in constant touch with Manipal hospital doctors.(Siddaramaiah) health is stable and there is no need to worry.”
