The last rites of the actor will be performed at Mumbai’s Chandan Wadi around 11 am

MUMBAI:  Veteran Hindi and Marathi actor Viju Khote, who feebly mouthed the iconic dialogue “Sardar, maine aapka namak khaya hai” as Kalia to Amjad Khan’s notorious Gabbar in cult classic “Sholay”, passed away on Monday.

He was 77.

The actor died in his sleep at his residence due to multiple organ failure.

“He passed away today at 6.55 am peacefully in his sleep at the residence. He has been unwell for quite some time. He had multiple organ failure

Viju Khote came from a family of artistes.

He was the nephew of yesteryear legend Durga Khote from his father, Nandu Khote’s side.

His father was also a noted stage actor and worked in silent-era films.

His elder sister Shubha Khote is another known name in the Indian film industry.

While Durga Khote is credited as one of the first notable female actors in the 1940s, later starring in classics such as “Mughal-E-Azam” and “The Householder”, both Viju and Shubha went on to become popular for their impeccable comic timing.

Starting out in films in the mid-60s, Viju Khote gained prominence with Ramesh Sippy’s “Sholay” in 1975 where he played Kalia and got one of the most memorable film dialogues as he reminded the most wanted dacoit Gabbar of his loyalty.

Viju Khote got his next unforgettable role in Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1994 sleeper-hit, comedy “Andaz Apna Apna”.

As the affable Robert, the actor got a catchphrase which has left a strong pop-culture footprint: “Galti se mistake hogaya.”

He excelled in character roles through the years.

Interestingly, in “Karz”, he starred as Kabira’s (Pran) left hand, literally called Baayan with Durga Khote, who played lead actor Rishi Kapoor’s mother in the 1980 reincarnation drama.

Kapoor took to Twitter to remember his “dear friend”.

“Though much elder, we used to bike together along with sister Shobha Khote ji, when I was young. Passionate and well informed about American films. We will miss you. Viju kutte aahe? (‘Where is Viju?’)” the veteran actor wrote.

Viju Khote and Shubha Khote, along with niece Balsavar, featured in 1993’s much loved and popular show “Zabaan Sambhalke” (based on the “Mind Your Language” series).

The actor continued to appear in commercial Hindi films, reprising his role of Robert in Santoshi’s “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani”.

In the 2010, he had a special appearance in Rohit Shetty’s “Golmaal 3” as the quintessential Bollywood house-help Shambhu Kaka.

Sister Shubha Khote played Kalindi, the suspicious aunt to Bindya Goswami in the 1979 original “Gol Maal”, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Viju Khote starred in around 300 films in his over five decade-long career in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, such as National Award-winning Marathi film “Ventilator” (2016), “Garam Masala”, “Pukar”, “Mela”, “China Gate”, “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”, among others.

FIR against PMC Bank chairman, MD, HDIL heads

October 1, 2019 by Nasheman

The FIR states that PMC Bank officials, along with HDIL directors, had caused the loss by not declaring NPAs even though there was no repayment of dues between 2008 and August 2019.

MUMBAI: The Economic Offence Wing (EOW), Mumbai, on Monday said it has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-Operative Bank’s (PMC Bank) former managing director, the chairman, as well as the bank’s major borrower Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL) for alleged fraud and irregularities.

Mumbai Police said as per the Reserve Bank of India’s directives, PMC Bank’s administrator Jasbir Singh Matta filed the complaint against ex-managing director Joy Thomas, chairman Waryam Singh and other bank officials for not declaring big loan accounts and Non-Performing Assets (NPA), and prima facie causing a loss of Rs 4,355.46 crore to the bank.

The FIR states that PMC Bank officials, along with HDIL directors, had caused the loss by not declaring NPAs even though there was no repayment of dues between 2008 and August 2019.

The information was hidden from the RBI with false and forged report of accounts with small loans and fake accounts leading to the loss, it said.

“The aforesaid persons (PMC Bank officials as well directors of HDIL, Wadhawans) colluded with criminal intent and conspired to use the loan amount for their own benefit by cheating the bank. Hence, EOW has filed the FIR under Sections 409, 420, 465, 466, 471 and 120(B). A special team has been formed to investigate the case,” a Mumbai Police statement said.

While Thomas last week said he was not aware of how the large exposure and NPAs were hidden, he admitted to wrongdoings to hide the NPAs in the letter to RBI last week.

The letter, now in public domain, shows him admitting that some of the large accounts were not reported to RBI from 2008 due to fear of reputational risk. In 2011, loans to HDIL at Rs 1,026 crore was more than half of the total advances of Rs 2,000 crore, he said.

When RBI started asking for indent for Advances master 2017 onwards, Thomas said the “stressed legacy accounts belonging to this group were replaced with dummy accounts to match the outstanding balances in the balance sheet. As the loans were mentioned as loans against deposits and were of lower amounts they were never checked by RBI.”

Bengaluru to get its 53rd Mayor on Tuesday

BJP is trying its best to rope in independents in order to increase its vote share

BENGALURU: After much delay, elections for the posts of Mayor, deputy Mayor and four standing committees — tax and finance, health, accounts and market — will be held on Tuesday. Earlier, the elections were scheduled to be held on September 27 but were postponed because the BBMP council committee took the decision to hold all the elections together — Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 12 standing committees.

But some people approached the High Court, which put the elections of some standing committees on hold. Harsha Gupta, Bengaluru Regional Commissioner, BBMP, said they cannot violate the High Court orders, so the elections will be held on October 1. Elections for the rest will be held once cases are disposed and as per the court directions.

As soon as the dates were finalised, corporators and party heads of BJP, Congress and JD(S) went into their huddle rooms to finalise the candidates. Till late on Monday evening, the party heads were holding meetings to put their best candidate forward for the Mayor’s post. The fate of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be decided by five Lok Sabha members (one Congress and four BJP), nine Rajya Sabha members (six from Congress and two from BJP), 23 MLAs (11 Congress, 11 BJP and one JDS) and 198 councillors (76 Congress, 14 JDS, 101 BJP and seven independent).

According to sources, BJP is trying hard to ensure that the independents join hands with them to increase their vote share and ensure that BJP Mayor holds the seat of power. The BJP is of the opinion that this will only be beneficial as centre, state and the city will all be governed by one party.

Meanwhile, Congress is trying its best to keep the JDS and independents happy so that it can retain its power in the city with a Congress Mayor once again. Congress is looking at this as its only ray of hope to hold power in the city, after facing a defeat in the trust vote.

Eshwarappa turns gun on Siddaramaiah, BSY is collateral damage

September 30, 2019 by Nasheman

Eshwarappa said that when Yediyurappa left the BJP and launched the KJP, he won only three seats.

SHIVAMOGGA: Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa, while criticising Congress Legislative Party leader Siddaramaiah, ended up taking a dig at his own Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, to drive home the point that no leader is bigger than his party. Eshwarappa said that when Yediyurappa left the BJP and launched the KJP, he won only three seats.

“Power is not permanent. Be it me, Siddaramaiah, Yediyurappa or Kumaraswamy, all politicians need the support of parties to rise to power. One should not act like a dictator,” Eshwarappa told reporters here on Saturday. Eshwarappa, who was among the most vocal critics of Yediyurappa when he left the party, remained critical even after Yediyurappa rejoined the BJP. This was apparent again on Saturday.
Eshwarappa also expressed displeasure over allocation of the additional portfolio of youth empowerment and sports, and said he would speak to Yediyurappa whether to take charge of it or not.

Eshwarappa said the Congress was defeated in the Assembly election and performed poorly in the Lok Sabha polls in the state due to the conspiracies of Siddaramaiah. “But when he was chief minister, Siddaramaiah behaved like a dictator. As a result, the Congress is nowhere in the state at present. It’s a lesson for not only Siddaramaiah but all politicians,” Eshwarappa said. “Siddaramaiah planned to form his own party but didn’t succeed. Yediyurappa launched his own party, KJP, but was not successful. Politicians need strong parties.”

Eshwarappa said that though senior Congress leader K H Muniyappa had accused former Speaker Ramesh Kumar of plotting his defeat and demanded his ouster from the party, Siddaramaiah made Ramesh sit next to him and didn’t take any action against him. There should be no support for those who deceive their own parties,” he said.

The minister expressed confidence that disqualified MLAs would get justice in the Supreme Court.
“Ramesh disqualified the MLAs at the behest of Siddaramaiah. Did the apex court ask the then Speaker to disqualify MLAs? No. He accepted the resignation of Chincholi MLA Umesh Jadhav. The same Speaker disqualified MLAs who submitted their resignations. I don’t understand this,” he said.

‘Don’t oppose power project’

Eshwarappa requested environmentalists not to oppose the proposed underground power project in the Sharavathi Valley. “Deforestation is bad, but at the same time, there should also be continuous electricity generation. The project also helps supply electricity to villages in the Sharavathi Valley, so the project should not be opposed,” he said.
