For confronting Islamophobia, Pakistan, Turkey, Malaysia to jointly launch English channel

September 26, 2019 by Nasheman

In a tweet, Imran Khan said that the decision was taken during his meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in New York.

NEW YORK: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said that Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia will jointly launch an English language channel ‘dedicated to confronting the challenges posed by Islamophobia’.

In a tweet, Khan said that the decision was taken during his meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in New York.

“President Erdogan, PM Mahatir and myself had a meeting today in which we decided our 3 countries would jointly start an English language channel dedicated to confronting the challenges posed by Islamophobia and setting the record straight on our great religion – Islam”, Khan tweeted.

He also added that the channel would correct the misperceptions which bring people together against Muslims.

Further, Khan said: “Issue of blasphemy would be properly contextualized; series and films would be produced on Muslim history to educate/inform our own people and the world; Muslims would be given a dedicated media presence.”

India’s richest turned a bit poorer this year

September 26, 2019 by Nasheman

At least 953 wealthiest individuals have shed Rs 3,72,800 crore, a depletion of 7 per cent of the total wealth in 2019.

Mukesh Ambani

NEW DELHI: While a lot has been talked about the shrinking rural growth, the slowing economy has taken a toll on India’s richest men and women too. Interestingly, however, the combined wealth of top 25 richest people equalled 10 per cent of India’s GDP (gross domestic product).

Mukesh Ambani continues to be the richest Indian with a wealth of Rs 3,80,700 crore; that is, 2.6 times the revenue foregone by the Central government as it cut corporate income taxes to their lowest level weeks ago.

However, at least 953 wealthiest individuals in India have shed Rs 3,72,800 crore; this is a depletion of 7 per cent of the total wealth in 2019 as compared to that in the year-ago period. In fact, if we include the new wealth added this year, the average wealth shows a decline of 11 per cent during the same period.

According to the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2019, at least 344 individuals, or more than a third of this year’s list, witnessed wealth reduction and another 112 failed to meet the cut-off of Rs 1,000 crore – that is almost half of last year’s list.

For instance, billionaire Dilip Shanghvi has seen 20 per cent drop in his wealth to Rs 71,500 crore. Since 2016, Dilip Shanghvi has lost Rs 50,000 core in net-worth and slipped to the tenth place in 2019 from second in 2016.

Steel magnate Lakshmi N Mittal, who runs ArcelorMittal, is the fourth richest with a wealth of Rs 1.07 lakh crore but saw his net worth erode by 6 per cent in sync with the stress in the metal sector.

Among the players who crashed out of the richest list is Anil Ambani. The equity value of Ambani’s listed business empire has declined to Rs 2,000 crore. If one were to exclude the pledged shares, the equity value is at Rs 584 crore.

Congress puts onus on loyalty, but also banks on BJP rebels

September 26, 2019 by Nasheman

This bypolls, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is looking to field ‘loyalists’ from their party in all 15 Assembly segments.

Karnataka Congress chief Dinesh Gundu Rao

BENGALURU: This bypolls, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is looking to field ‘loyalists’ from their party in all 15 Assembly segments. While candidates with high chances of winning matter, those who are loyal will help the party more. The names of the candidates are expected to be released by the end of Thursday.

The Congress had previously won in 12 out of 15 seats, with three going to the JDS. With just a few days left for filing nominations, the Congress has almost finalised its list of names. “We are done with the groundwork, and have almost zeroed-in on the candidates,’’ said a senior Congress leader on condition of anonymity. On Thursday,  KC Venugopal, state in-charge, is expected to announce the names.

KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao said that they are looking for candidates who are loyal to the party, while also being popular in the specific locality. “We have checked their backgrounds, commitment and popularity. There have been no issues in getting cadidates,” he said. However, he said they are finding it a little difficult to find candidates for three constituencies, not naming which ones.

Other Congress sources said they are being cautious while choosing names. “We do not want to take any risks. We have seen what happened with candidates who left the party suddenly — the same party that helped them grow. We do not have such people again. We will make a comeback,’’ sources said.

Congress is also banking on rebels within the BJP. “If the disqualified MLAs or their kin are allowed to contest, those who have worked with BJP and want to contest, will feel ignored. This will affect the BJP, but will work for the Congress,’’ said KPCC working president Eshwar Khandre.

“Congress seems to be choosing loyalists. This also includes those planning to join the party after being rejected by the BJP,” the senior leader said.

India and Pakistan two nuclear countries, got to ‘work it out’: Donald Trump

September 26, 2019 by Nasheman

President Trump said he had ‘very productive conversations’ with the leaders of India and Pakistan on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

modi-trump-pti

NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump said he discussed Kashmir with the top leadership of India and Pakistan during his meetings with them and offered to help with “arbitration or mediation” on the issue to the two nuclear-armed neighbours, who have to “work it out”.

Trump’s comments came a day after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session here where the two leaders mainly focused on issues related to terrorism emanating from Pakistan and the Indo-US bilateral trade.

India maintains that Kashmir is a bilateral issue and no third party has any role in it.

Pakistan has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue after India withdrew the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, but New Delhi has asserted the abrogation of Article 370 was its “internal matter”.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, President Trump said he had “very productive conversations” with the leaders of India and Pakistan on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

“With respect to Pakistan and India, we talked about Kashmir. Whatever help I can be, I said, I offered, whether it’s arbitration or mediation or whatever it has to be,” Trump said in his opening remarks, offering to mediate for the fourth time.

Trump said he will “do whatever he can, because, they are at very serious odds right now and hopefully that will get better”. “You look at the two gentlemen heading those two countries, two good friends of mine. I said, fellows work it out, just work it out. Those are two nuclear countries, gotta work it out.”

When asked to comment on Trump’s remarks, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said India position is “very clear”.

“I think it has been articulated by the prime minister earlier. It was articulated yesterday (Tuesday) by the foreign secretary so that position remains,” Kumar told reporters at a briefing.

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had told reporters after the Modi-Trump meeting that the prime minister “made it clear that we are not shying away from talks with Pakistan”.

“But for that to happen, we expect some concrete steps to be taken by Pakistan. And we do not find any effort by Pakistan taking those steps,” Gokhale had said.

Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday — their fourth meeting since Modi came to power for a second term in May this year — came a day after the US president met Pakistani premier Imran Khan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.

A White House readout on Wednesday said Trump “encouraged” Modi to improve relations with Pakistan and fulfil his promise to better the lives of the Kashmiri people.

Gokhale had said during the meeting, Modi explained in detail to Trump the challenges faced by India because of terrorism, especially in Jammu and Kashmir, where 42,000 lives have been lost in the last 30 years due to terrorism.

Tensions between the two countries have spiked since the abrogation of Article 370.

It evoked strong reactions from Islamabad, which downgraded ties and expelled the Indian ambassador.

Meanwhile, both Modi and Khan are scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Friday.

CBI Searches At Ex-Bengaluru Police Chief's Home In Phone-Tapping Case

BENGALURU

Alok Kumar was the Bengaluru police chief during HD Kumaraswamy’s tenure.

Officials of the CBI are searching the home of former Bengaluru police commissioner Alok Kumar in the city in connection with the alleged phone-tapping of politicians and bureaucrats during the term of the Congress-JD(S) government in Karnataka.

Searches are being done in several other place in Bengaluru.

The Central Bureau of Investigation took over the case after the BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government last month asked the probe agency to take over the case from the cyber crime wing of Bengaluru Police.

Alok Kumar was the Bengaluru police chief during HD Kumaraswamy’s tenure.

Soon after taking over as Chief Minister in July, BS Yediyurappa had announced a CBI probe amid signs that the scandal was gaining political steam ever since disqualified JD(S) MLA AH Vishwanath, who had served as the party’s state president and later turned rebel, accused Mr Kumaraswamy’s of tapping phones and spying on more than 300 people, including him.

“It has come to the notice of the government that there are apprehensions that phones of several ruling and opposition political leaders, their relatives, and other government officials have been intercepted in an illegal unauthorised unwarranted manner,” the letter entrusting the probe to the CBI said.

Congress leaders, including Siddaramaiah, M Mallikarjuna Kharge and Home Minister in the alliance government MB Patil, had sought a probe while another key party leader and former minister, DK Shivakumar, rejected the snooping allegations and appeared to side with HD Kumaraswamy.

Phones of those close to Mr Siddaramaiah, who was the coalition coordination committee chief then, too had come under the watch.

Several BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, have accused Mr Kumaraswamy of being behind the episode to save his government which was then rocked by dissidence within.
