Lok Sabha polls 2019: Stage set for triangular fight in Akola, polarisation of Dalit, Muslim votes likely to help BJP

April 15, 2019 by Nasheman

Of the 18.54 lakh voters in Akola Lok Sabha seat, there are 2.75 lakh Dalits and 2.50 lakh Muslims. The Marathas and Kunbhi communities together constitute a vote share of 4.5 lakh. The remaining votes are scattered among various communities and sub-groups.
Lok Sabha polls 2019: Stage set for triangular fight in Akola, polarisation of Dalit, Muslim votes likely to help BJP

The stage is set for a triangular contest in the Akola Lok Sabha constituency in western Vidarbha where BJP’s three-term sitting MP Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre is fighting Prakash Yaswant Ambedkar of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and Hidayatulla Barkatulla Patel of the Congress.

Akola, the cotton capital of Vidarbha, is seeing a polarisation between Dalit and Muslims. While Muslims have pledged their support to Patel — the only minority face fielded by the Congress, majority of Dalits appear to have aligned with VBA’s Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar. The polarisation of votes, however, is likely to help the BJP retain its electoral one-upmanship in the constituency.

Referring to people’s emotional connect with Prakash Ambedkar in urban and rural Dalit ghettos, Dr Ashok Gadge, an Ambedkarite, said: “In Prakash Ambedkar, Dalits see their hopes and aspirations.

The support to (Prakash) Amdebkar transcends beyond Dalits. Through VBA smaller segments, like Dhangars and Mallis, have also joined Ambedkar.”

Of the 18.54 lakh voters in Akola Lok Sabha seat, there are 2.75 lakh Dalits and 2.50 lakh Muslims. The Marathas and Kunbhi communities together constitute a vote share of 4.5 lakh. The remaining votes are scattered among various communities and sub-groups like Malli, Koli, Banjara, Dhangar, Adivasis and Brahmins among others.

On Saturday, Dhotre (60), who represents the Maratha community, said: “My confidence has its root in the development work done by the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.” He claimed that the people in the constituency would rise above caste and community to exercise their votes for a “strong leadership”.

Making a strong pitch for the Congress-led opposition alliance at a rally in Akot Assembly segment of the constituency, Patel claimed that the party was the real custodian of all castes and classes. “Don’t look at my religion or community. You should support the leadership of Congress president Rahul Gandhi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar. The Congress and NCP have always served the poor and the oppressed classes.”

In a sharp attack on the VBA chief, Patel said: “It is evident that Prakash, grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar, is helping the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Our leaders were willing for pre-poll alliance with his party. But he refused on the pretext of number of seats or policies.”

“There is some link between cup and saucer (poll symbol of VBA) and chai (in apparent reference to Modi),” Patel said.

BVA general secretary Dyaneshwar Sultane, meanwhile, claimed that the Congress had “already surrendered the contest to BJP”. “Patel, who has a cooperative background, appears to be the team B of the BJP. The real fight here is between the BJP and VBA,” he said. Earlier in the day, the

VBA workers had took to the streets to campaign for the party, even as Prakash Ambedkar was campaigning in Solapur where he is fighting on a second seat.

Already facing the odds of polarisation of Dalit votes, the Congress cadre in the constituency said that while the party had made a symbolic gesture by fielding a Muslim candidate from Akola, the support from top leadership was “lacking”. A senior Congress functionary, who did not wish to be named, said: “By fielding Patel, the party has made things more difficult on this seat. The decisive Muslim vote in favour of Patel will lead to greater polarisation. The non-Muslim votes will now transfer to BJP.”

Local Congress workers have also accused ally NCP of a lukewarm response, a charge that the Sharad Pawar-led party has dismissed. The NCP has a sizeable representation in the Akola District Cooperative Bank and Agriculture Produce Market Committees.

The BJP, too, seems to be facing an lukewarm ally, with party insiders conceding that a faction of the Shiv Sena has staying away from campaigning for Dhotre. However, BJP appeared to be unruffled.

“If we have to point to one seat which is safest for the BJP, it is Akola. Therefore, we are not affected by minor issues, which crop up in every election,” a BJP strategist, not wishing to be named, said.

Dhotre, who is looking for a fourth term, has won from the constituency in the last three consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 2004, 2009 and 2014.

Of the six Assembly segments — Akot, Balapur, Akola East, Akola West, Murtizapur and Risod — in the parliamentary constituency, the BJP has four sitting MLAs, the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasang and the Congress has one each.

Traditionally a Congress bastion, the party had held the turf between 1952 and 1984. The BJP had made inroads into the seat with senior leader late Pandurang Phundkar winning from Akola in 1989. The BJP held the seat in next two polls in 1991 and 1996.

The political dynamics in the constituency altered with the entry of Prakash Ambedkar, who contested from Akola under the banner of Bharipa Bahujan Mahasang. Ambedkar, who was supported by then Congress and NCP, won 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha polls from the seat. However, as the relationship with Congress and NCP soured, Ambedkar adopted an independent strategy. Interestingly, Prakash Ambedkar has remained a constant, contesting from Akola in each election since 1998.

Five time MP Srinivas Prasad attempting to make a re-entry to Lok Sabha

April 15, 2019 by Nasheman

Chamarajanagara, Karnataka, Apr 15 (UNI) Five time MP and former Union and Karnataka Minister Srinivas Prasad is attempting to make a re-entry to Lok Sabha in Chamarajanagara (Reserved) seat by defeating sitting Congress MP Dhruvanarayana in the first phase of Polling slated for April 18.
While Srinivas Prasad, who had won the seat on Congress and JDU ticket in the earlier election, has joined BJP quitting Congress after being dropped from the State Cabinet, Druvanarayana is a joint candidate of coalition partners Congress and JDS.
Besides, former UP Chief Minister Mayawati led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has put up its candidate in an attempt to make a inroad. BSP’s attempt comes following victory of its candidate N Mahesh from Kollegal Assembly constituency in the 2018 election. Mahesh, the first time winner, was also made Cabinet Minister by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy. However, he quit following Mayawati coming out of ‘Mahaghatabandan’. BSP surprised many by winning nine out of the 30 seats in the Kollegal City Municipal Council (CMC) in the elections held in September last.
BSP State General Secretary Arkalavadi Nagendra said that ?the party’s support base is not confined to Kollegal Assembly but the support is spread in H D Kote, T Narsipur, Varuna and other Constituencies also.
Srinivas Prasad had contested general elections from Chamarajanagar as many as seven times since 1980 and won the seat four times on Congress ticket and once on JD(U) ticket. The victory in 1999 saw him he became Union Minister under A B Vajpayee Cabinet.
Prasad’s attempt to re-enter Lok Sabha, after two decade, is expected to ensure that Dhruvanarayan’s victory who has established himself and has became a popular among the voters. This time the battle for him is different since he has to wage war against his one time Political mentor (guru).
Talking to UNI, Dhruvanaryana said that he has been banking on development works he had undertaken during his two terms — it may be National Highway works, establishment of Agriculture College, Law College, Passport Centre and other Railway Works. Besides, JDS is also supporting him as per Coalition agreement. ” I am not worried about Srinivasa Prasad attempting to make a re-entry as Congress party has its own hold in the constituency”, he added.
Absence of JDS candidate may arrest division of votes this time, but the growing popularity of BSP in parts of the constituency, particularly in Kollegal, which is represented by the BSP’s former Minister N. Mahesh in the Assembly, may to some extent affect progress of the Congress candidate.
The BSP derives its support from the same sections of the society that have been traditionally supporting the Congress, even though Prasad had carved political space for himself in the region as a leader of the Dalits.
Even if the BSP is not strong enough to emerge victorious, it has the potential to hurt the prospects of the Congress, said Mallikarjunappa, a BJP leader from Chamarajanagar.
Apart from Prasad’s traditional ties with the voters, the BJP is banking on the Lingayats and the popularity of former Chief Minister and BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa among them.
The Congress is getting support of A R Krishnamurthy, who finished second as the BJP’s candidate in the last two elections and has been actively campaigning for Dhruvanarayan.
The constituency comprise of Hanur, Chamarajanagar, Kollegal and Gundlupet Assembly segments in Chamarajanagar Revenue District and H D Kote, Nanjangud, Varuna, and T Narsipur in Mysuru revenue District ? is home to not only Lingayats and Dalits, but also a sizeable number of Upparas, Nayakas and Vokkaligas.
Congress had won four assembly seats in 2018 election (Chamarajanagara, Hanur, H D Kote and Varuna, while BJP had won Gundlupet and Nanjangud, JDS in T Narasipura.
There are 16.80 lakh eligible voters and 10 candidates in the fray.
The BJP is banking on the ‘Modi wave’ to a great extent. Besides, the mood is upbeat in the BJP camp with the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and other leaders are campaigning besides the party is hoping to consolidate the Lingayat votes.

April 15, 2019 by Nasheman

Lucknow, Apr 15 : Union Home Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Uttar Pradesh state capital Rajnath Singh is likely to file his nomination from this parliamentary seat on April 16.
On the day of filing his nomination, Mr Singh is also expected to hold a road show from the party office to the Collectorate while several senior BJP leaders and NDA alliance leaders may also be present on the day.
Mr Singh is expected to reach the party office at around 0930 hrs on April 16th.
During the road show, the Minister will pay his tributes at the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar near the Hazratganj Chauraha.
He will reach the Collectorate at around 1200 hrs file his nomination for the Lucknow seat.
BJP leader and candidate from the Mohanlalganj parliamentary constituency is also set to file his papers the same day.
Although the Opposition is yet to field a candidate against Mr Singh, sources said that the Opposition candidate may be announced in the next 24 hours.
The last date to file nominations is April 18.
Lucknow is considered to be the stronghold of the ruling BJP which has held the seat since 1991. In such a scenario, it will be interesting to lookout for the way in which the electoral battle from this seat, which also has a legacy of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, eventually turns out.
Mr Singh had earlier contested from the Lucknow seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and secured a decisive victory by defeating Prof Rita Bahuguna Joshi by winning about 5,61,106 votes. Ms Joshi, who had then contested on a Congress ticket, later joined the BJP in October 2016.
Earlier, the Union Minister had contested from the Ghaziabad seat in 2009.
Lucknow goes to polls in the fifth phase and the nominations for this phase started from April 10.
Voting will be held here on May 6.

DC set to carry on their winning streak against SRH

April 13, 2019 by Nasheman

Hyderabad, Apr 13 : Delhi Capitals seem determined to carry forward their winning streak while taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next Indian Premier League game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts would put all their efforts in winning the game as they lost two matches back-to-back in the cash-rich tournament. After losing a game against Mumbai Indians at home, they failed to defend a tally against Kings XI Punjab. However, this time, they would love to turn the tables.

Like other teams in the IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad too have a lot to worry about. Apart from the opening duo– Jonny Bairstow and David Warner– none of the batsmen have shown stability in the middle. They would expect their batsmen to score runs at any cost for the crucial clash.

On the other hand, Delhi Capitals will be on high confidence after winning their last match against Kolkata Knight Riders, where Shikhar Dhawan struck 97 runs off 63 balls. He would once again be the key factor, as he is quite aware of the conditions at Hyderabad.

Though, it won’t easy to take on orange cap on their home ground, but DC the bowlers like Ishant Sharma, Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris to take on the challenge. It will be interesting to see, whether Axar Patel can perform like others spinner.

In terms of batting, DC batsmen have proved themselves in the last game and the same performance will be expected against the hosts which has the best bowling units in the competition with Rashid, Nabi and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Can Andre Russell win for KKR against rampaging Chennai in return IPL match at Eden

April 13, 2019 by Nasheman

Kolkata, Apr 13 : Time has come for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to stop the
current slide, especially, after two consecutive loss, almost in similar fashion, or
else maintaining the top four position may prove a tough task later, when Dinesh
Karthik boys will host MS Dhoni’s rampaging brigade -Chennai Super Kings- at
Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Two times winners KKR were atop the table in the current edition even after their
5th game, but the CSK toppled them to the second position in the 6th game and
took top slot when Dhoni’s boys beat them in Chennai by 7 wickets on April 9.
KKR could not reverse their fate even at home in the following game when visiting
Sourav Ganguly mentored Delhi Capitals easily beat the host by 7 wickets at Eden
on Friday night, the first home loss in the current edition for Shah Rukh Khan
franchise.
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings, atop the eight-team table with six
wins ( 12 points) from their opening seven matches, visit Kolkata where Andre
Russell’s explosive batting form may be a game changer for the host.
Kolkata have won four matches so far but defeats in their last two games have
halted their momentum.
Chennai restricted Kolkata to 108/9 in their previous meeting, despite Russell’s
half-century (unbeaten 50), as the Super Kings claimed a seven-wicket home win.
Interestingly, the two consecutive defeats for KKR preceded by losing the toss
and rival sent KKR to batting first.
Kolkata have lost their toss in their last two matches and been asked to bat,
with the general trend at Eden Gardens being to field first.
KKR could not save match despite three changes with overseas contingent.
Joe Denly, Carlos Brathwaite and Lockie Ferguson all came into the team, with
Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn and Harry Gurney dropping out.
The changes proved unsuccessful, however, with Denly out first ball and the
two bowlers proving expensive and wicket less. There could therefore be changes
again this time out.
Despite defeat to Delhi Capitals on Friday night here, Andre Russell’s explosive
form continued as he hit 45 from 21 balls with the bat and took 1-29 from three
overs with the ball.
Russell became the third IPL batsman to pass 300 runs so far this season as a
result.
He is also KKR’s top wicket-taker.
Shubman Gill was KKR top scorer with 65, his IPL highest and second half-ton,
pushed up the order to open. Robin Uthappa moved to 211 runs from seven innings,
while Nitish Rana has 180 from six.
Spinner Kuldeep Yadav has taken three wickets so far, but he has a good economy
rate and has shown his match-winning ability for India on numerous occasions in the
past year too.
Chennai Super Kings’ skipper MS Dhoni, the man-of-the match in their most recent
games, remains available after escaping a ban for his on-field confrontation with
umpire Ulhas Gandhe in that win against Rajasthan.
Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur returned to the team for that game, in place
of Harbhajan Singh and Scott Kuggeleijn.
Harbhajan took 2-15 in the previous game against Kolkata but has only played in
one match away from Chennai so far this season. Dwayne Bravo is currently
unavailable due to a hamstring injury.
The Super Kings have strength throughout their batting line-up, with Ambati
Rayudu scoring 57 in that chase, and Faf du Plessis scoring an unbeaten 43 in
the win against Kolkata when these teams last met.
Shane Watson has not showed the consistent form he displayed in Pakistan,
but the Australian should never be written off at the top of the order either.
Chennai’s bowlers have been key to their success so far, meanwhile.
Deepak Chahar has taken ten wickets in seven matches so far, while Imran
Tahir has weighed in with nine.
They have excellent economy rates of 6.29 runs per over and 5.61 runs per
over respectively too.
Chennai Super Kings predicted playing 11:
Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav,
MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur,
Imran Tahir
Kolkata Knight Riders predicted playing 11:
Joe Denly, Sunil Narine, Nitish Rana, Robin Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik, Shubman
Gill, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Harry Gurney, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh

Fresh revelations show that PM Modi acted as middleman of Anil Ambani: Cong

April 13, 2019 by Nasheman

New Delhi, Apr 13 : Reacting to fresh revelations on the Rafale deal that the France government waived taxes worth 143.7 million euros owed by a local subsidiary of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Global Comm Limited in 2015, around the same time when India was negotiating the aircraft deal, the Congress on Saturday said that it was now clear that Prime Minister narendra modi acted as the middleman of industrialist Anil Ambani in the deal,
Talking to reporters here, AICC spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said,”French newspaper Le Monde has reported that the France government waived taxes worth 143.7 million euros owed by a local subsidiary of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Global Comm Limited in 2015, around the same time when India was negotiating the Rafale aircraft deal. Reliance Atlantic Flag France was investigated by French tax authorities and found liable to pay 60 million euros in taxes for the period 2007 to 2010. After another investigation for the period 2010 to 2012, they were asked for an additional tax demand of 91 million euros in taxes. Thus the total tax liability came to 151 Million euros.

As against this, Reliance Atlantic Flag France of Anil Ambani wanted to settle it for a mere 7.6 million euros, which was rejected by the French. However, after PM Modi, on April 10, 2015, announced purchase of 36 Rafalefighter jets, off the shelf, the French suddenly turned benevolent and canceled a tax recovery of of 143.7 million euros of Reliance Atlantic Flag France and settled for 7.6 Million Euros, as per the sensational and shocking revelation . It is now clear that PM acted as a middleman of Anil Ambani in the deal.”

Anil Ambani’s company is the major offset partner of the Dassault Aviation, maker of Rafale fighter aircraft.
The Congress spokesperson alleged that the money trail in the deal is being exposed gradually.
“On March 23, 2015 AA (Anil Ambani) visited Paris and met defence officials and others in the French Defence Ministry. Till then, the contract of making 128 Rafale fighter jets was with the Defence PSU HAL,

48 hours before PM Modi’s visit to Paris, India’s Foreign Secretary denied that purchase of any aircrafts would be even considered at PM level visit. He infact said that negotiations between HAL and Rafale are underway. On April 10, 2015, PM Modi unilaterally announced ‘off the shelf’ purchase of 36 Rafale aircrafts in a 7.89 Billion Euros deal, affectively shelving the 126 Rafale aircraft with Transfer of Technology negotiated by UPA. On September 21 2018- French President, Mr Francois Hollande claimed that Reliance was offered as ‘Offset Partner’ by India i.e PM Modi, and they had ‘no choice’ but to accept it,”Mr Surjewala said.

“As we all know till March 13, 2014 the Dassault Aviation had a workshare agreement with the HAL worth of Rs 30,000 crore,” he added.
He also questioned the Dassault Aviation for investing Rs 284 crore in Anil Ambani’s company and said, “In 2017-18, the DA invested Rs 284 crore in Anil Ambani’s zero sum company which had no profit and business. . The company’s name is Reliance Airport Developer Limited (RADL) and it was investing at a time when the Indian government was making advance payment.

Why would Daasualt Aviation buy a share of Rs 10 at Rs 1000-1100? It is a case of money trail. Has the money trial come out in public in Rafale deal? Has PM Modi worked as an agent of his friend Anil Ambani?”
