50% cap breached, OBCs should get 54% quota: Ram Gopal Yadav

Nasheman News : Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav on Wednesday demanded 54 per cent quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), saying the government had opened the doors for that by breaching the 50 per cent barrier on reservations set by the apex court.

While supporting the Constitution amendment bill to provide 10 per cent quota for upper castes in government service and higher educational institutions, he said the OBCs were given reservation corresponding to only half their population to ensure that the 50 per cent cap is not breached.

“But when you have broken the barrier of 50 per cent as set by the Supreme Court, I request that OBCs should be given 54 per cent reservation as per their population as opposed to 27 per cent now. Also, the population of Scheduled Castes is also now 25 per cent and they should be given reservation accordingly,” he said in the Rajya Sabha during a debate on the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019 which was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

He added that the Bill would not bring the results that the government was promising as the cut offs under the reserved class would be even higher than the general quota “as you would see in one year when public service commission results are announced”.

He also questioned the timing of the Bill saying it could have been brought any time over the last four and a half years and was yet brought on the last session of Parliament before the Lok Sabha polls.

“The government’s goal is not to help the poor. This bill is brought by the government with eyes at 2019 elections. Had you (government) been honest, this Bill would have been brought some two-three years back so that people would have actually benefited from it,” Yadav said.

The Samajwadi Party leader also asked the government to improve implementation of reservation for SCs and STs.

“Even after so many years of reservation, do they have enough representation in government jobs,” he asked.

He added that the new 10 per cent reservation for upper castes won’t yield desired and promised results because there were not enough jobs in the market as “many jobs were lost due to demonetisation”.

Frequent clashes between Myanmar security forces and Buddhist rebels in Rakhine state have spread alarm among thousands of Rohingya refugees living in no-man’s-land on the country’s border with Bangladesh, as concerns grow over the intensified fighting.

More than 730,000 members of the mostly Muslim minority have fled Myanmar to escape a brutal military-led crackdown that started in 2017. Most of the Rohingya have taken shelter in sprawling refugee camps in neighbouring Bangladesh but some have been living in limbo on the border, unwilling to enter the settlements or return home.

They are now caught on the sidelines of fighting between Myanmar troops and the Arakan Army, an armed group seeking more autonomy for western Rakhine state’s Buddhist-majority population.

“Heavy fighting is going on between the government troops and Arakan Army inside Myanmar,” Rohingya leader Dil Mohammad told AFP news agency.

“The situation is very tense,” he said, adding that the security build-up and daily gunfire had created “panic”.

Myanmar soldiers last week set up security camps and bunkers along the border after fighting saw 13 police killed.

Some of the fortifications are directly adjacent to a border fence running alongside a stream and overlooking shacks erected by an estimated 4,500 displaced Rohingya living in the narrow strip of land.

Refugee community leader Nur Alam said gunfire could frequently be heard after dark on the other side of the border.

“Every night it is close by. The Myanmar border guard have set up 10 new posts near our camp. It’s very intimidating,” he told AFP.

Last week, an Arakan Army spokesperson outside Myanmar told Reuters news agency that the group attacked the security forces in response to a broad military offensive in the north of Rakhine state that also targeted civilians.

UN appeal

Meanwhile, the United Nations said in a statement on Wednesday it was “deeply concerned” about the situation in the area.

“Mr Ostby further appeals to all sides to intensify efforts to find a peaceful solution to the situation and to ensure humanitarian access to all people affected by the violence,” the statement added.

A Bangladesh official said they were aware of the border tensions.

“We will talk to the relevant authorities to discuss what to do,” local administrator Kamal Hossain said.

Rohingya in Buddhist-majority Myanmar have suffered decades of persecution. Impoverished western Rakhine state, in particular, is scarred by deep ethnic and religious hatred.

A report by UN investigators in August last year found that Myanmar’s military carried out mass killings and gang rapes of Rohingya with “genocidal intent” and said the commander-in-chief and five generals should be prosecuted under international laws.

Myanmar has denied any wrongdoing, saying it was defending itself against Rohingya fighters who attacked police posts.

Nasheman News : Prime Minister Narendra Modi patted his government’s back for the passage of Upper Caste Reservation Bill and Citizenship Amendment Bill in his first rally after the two key Bills were passed. The two Bills were passed in Lok Sabha where the government enjoys a majority. The Bill to provide ten per cent reservation in education and government jobs to economically weaker sections was tabled in Rajya Sabha on the last day of the Winter Session on Wednesday and will be taken up for discussion during the day.

Hitting out at the opposition parties for raising objections, he said that the Bill is a “strong answer” by Parliament to those “spreading lies”. He assured that none of the reservations allotted to the weaker sections will be reduced to add this 10 per cent quota. “The rights of the deprived sections, including the dalits and the tribal people, will not be affected because of this bill. The opposition wanted some part of the reservation of weaker sections to be taken away to be given to upper castes but we were adamant that nothing will be taken away from them. This is an additional quota being made for the people from general category,” PM Modi said at a rally in Solapur in Maharashtra. 

He termed the passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha as a “historic” step which seeks to uplift the deprived sections and also illustrates the commitment of the government to prioritising the good of those needing it the most. “There are misconceptions being spread about the Quota Bill. Rajya Sabha was extended by a day for this Quota Bill only. I am confident that like yesterday, we will pass the bill in Rajya Sabha too,” PM Modi said. 

He also applauded his government for the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. “The Bill is important as migrants from other countries who want to stay here will be given Indian citizenship now. India will give shelter to these migrants. We have taken the onus of taking care of these people who have come to India,” he said. He assured the people of Assam and North East that their rights will not be curtailed in any way through the bill’s provisions.

PM Modi was speaking in Solapur after the inauguration of a highway project built at an investment of over Rs 970 crore. He added that Solapur will soon be covered under the Udaan scheme which seeks to link far off places with air connectivity. During his visit, he also laid the foundation stone of a project worth over Rs 1,800 crore of 30,000 houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

Nasheman News : Pakistan’s Chief Justice Saqib Nisar on Wednesday said that the country’s Supreme Court will not allow Indian content to be shown on Pakistani TV channels as it “damages our culture”.

Nisar’s remarks came as a three-member apex court bench heard an appeal filed by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) against the High Court’s decision to ban the broadcast of Indian content on TV channels in the country, Dawn newspaper reported.

Pemra’s counsel Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri told the Supreme Court that foreign content was banned on court orders before a High Court issued a stay.

The authority’s Chairman Saleem Baig said that 65 per cent of the content shown on Filmazia channel was foreign and that the number at times goes as high as 80 per cent.

At this, the Chief Justice remarked: “We will not allow Indian content to be aired on (Pakistani) channels.”

On being told that “Filmazia was not a news channel but was an entertainment channel and that it did not do any propaganda”, the Chief Justice countered the Pemra counsel by saying: “It is, however, damaging our culture.” 

The top judge adjourned the hearing in the case till the first week of February as the Pakistan Broadcasters Association’s counsel Faisal Siddiqui was not in attendance. 

In 2016, Pemra had imposed a ban on airing Indian content on local television and FM radio channels.

The decision was largely seen as a tit-for-tat move after similar actions were taken by some channels and the entertainment industry in India against Pakistani content and artists, the report said.

In 2017, the Lahore High Court lifted the Pemra-imposed ban, declaring it null and void as the federal government had no objections regarding the same.

In October 2018, the Supreme Court reinstated the ban on the transmission of Indian content on local television channels.

Massive fire at under-construction hospital building

A massive fire broke out on Wednesday at an under-construction building of a hospital in Nagpur.

According to initial reports, at least 20 people are trapped inside the building, most of them labourers.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known but it is believed that short circuit caused the blaze. No casualty has been reported so far. Eyewitnesses said that thick black smoke was rising from the 10-storey building. 

At least 10 fire tenders are at the spot and efforts are on to control the raging inferno. Army jawans are also helping firefighters in controlling the blaze.

Rescue operations were underway when the last reports came in. Some reports claimed that the fire has been brought under control.

On December 29, 12 firefighters were injured while trying to douse the flames when a fire broke out in Sadhana House in Worli, Mumbai.

On Dec 27, seven people lost their lives after a broke out on the 14th floor of an apartment in Chembur, Mumbai.

Nasheman News : As the 48-hour nationwide trade strike entered its second day on Wednesday, angry protesters stormed into the cabin of a State Bank of India (SBI) manager here and vandalised it

“At around 10.15 a.m., angry protesters came into my cabin and asked if I did not know that today is a protest day. I told them that although we are open, banking operations were not taking place. Then they threw the computer and other properties on my table,” Santosh Karunakaran, the manager, told the media here.

This branch is located near Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s office and also the temporary union office of the protesters.

The bank has lodged an official complaint and the police have launched a probe.

Congress, BJP contest for MP Deputy Speaker post

Nasheman News : The Madhya Pradesh Assembly is likely to witness voting for electing the new Deputy Speaker of the House as both the ruling Congress as well as the opposition BJP have fielded candidates.

Hina Kaware, a second-term MLA from Lanji in Balaghat, has filed the nomination for the Congress while the BJP has fielded its former Minister Jagdeesh Dewra, an MLA from Malhargarh in Mandsaur district.

The voting for the second top post in the Assembly is likely to take place on Thursday.

Both candidates expressed confidence of winning the election.

On Tuesday, Congress’ N.P. Prajapati was elected Speaker after BJP members walked out in protest over the Protem Speaker’s refusal to let the opposition party propose the name of its nominee for the post.

The BJP had fielded former Minister Vijay Shah for the post.

If any of the candidates don’t withdraw their nomination, voting will have to be undertaken to elect the new Deputy Speaker.

A 32-year-old rowdy sheeter from Bengaluru was found dead in a pool of blood in Tumakuru district on Tuesday, two months after he had eloped with Pallavi, the niece of Kiran Gopalaiah, a JD(S) MLA from Bengaluru. A special team has been formed to arrest the perpetrators, district police said.

“He may have been killed at night. It appeared he was attacked with lethal weapons, including machetes, at the spot where the body was found,” a police officer was quoted by The Times of India, as saying.

The deceased Manu R was working as a driver with the Mahalakshmi Layout MLA’s brother Guli Basava alias Basavaraju C (Pallavi’s father) and also ran a DVD shop on the side. According to The New Indian Express, a total of eight of Basavaraju’s men had allegedly kidnapped Manu and took him to the empty area in Jetti Agrahara village. The gang had allegedly forced Manu to consume alcohol and tied his arms and legs before killing him with sharp weapons.

Basavaraju had initially approached the police stating that Pallavi had gone missing on October 22 and it was later found out that Manu had also gone missing on the same day.

“We learnt Manu had married Pallavi and we tried to trace him. We couldn’t trace them and we still don’t know where Pallavi is staying,” said police.

Manu had posted several videos on Facebook speaking about death threats from Basavaraju and his son Kiran. In one of the videos, Manu was reportedly heard saying that police were hunting him for kidnapping Pallavi but the couple clarified that they had married each other out of their free will.

Police say the whereabouts of Pallavi are unknown.

According to police, Manu had more than 10 cases against him in Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural and Tumkur districts and is survived by his mother who lives in Ballagere village in Tumakuru.

ICC welcomes USA Cricket as its latest member

 Nasheman News : Following the expulsion of USACA a couple of years ago, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday welcomed USA Cricket as its newest member.

According to an ICC statement, USA Cricket’s application to become the 93rd Associate Member in accordance with the ICC Constitution was approved by ICC Members following the Membership Committee’s recommendation to the ICC Board late last year and is implemented with immediate effect.

As a Member of the ICC, USA Cricket is now eligible to receive funding in accordance with the ICC Development Funding Policy and can sanction domestic and international cricket in the United States.

Welcoming the new body, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: “This is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and I would like to congratulate the Chair of USA Cricket, Paraag Marathe, and the Board, on this important milestone and wish them all the very best for the future.”

USA Cricket Board Chair Paraag Marathe said: “USA Cricket was established to bring together the cricket community in the United States, develop the game and unlock the sport’s undoubted potential for growth. Burglar dies after falling from 9th floor

Nasheman News : A burglar slipped from the ninth floor of a building at Indirapuram here and fell to his death — along with some stolen ornaments, cash and a pepper spray.

The incident occurred on Tuesday midnight in Ambaji Apartments in Ghaziabad city. 

Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said the security guard of the society informed the police about the incident. 

When police reached the spot, he was found dead. The crime scene suggested he was attempting to commit or had committed a burglary in the apartment complex. 

He succeeded climbing to the ninth floor from the rear side of the building. But he slipped and fell all the way to the ground floor, dying instantly. 

“We are trying to identify him. He may be a suspect in the burglaries which have occurred in the past in the same society and in adjoining housing societies,” the officer said.
