Police assault Congress activists protesting against Modi

Nasheman News : The police assaulted several Congress activists, including from the youth and student wings, when they tried to protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to the city on Wednesday.

The trouble erupted when some Youth Congress and National Students Union of India activists stood near the roads and raised slogans of ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’. Others raised black flags and released black balloons as Modi’s motorcade zoomed past.

Angered by this, plainclothes security personnel pounced on the activists, pushed and dragged them, kicking and punching them brutally.

“An Emergency-like situation has prevailed in Solapur since the past couple of days… Party activists, municipal corporators and other elected leaders were served notices, questioned on their movements and today even prevented from staging peaceful protests,” Congress legislator Praniti (Sushilkumar) Shinde told IANS.

She added that several activists – including Nivrutti Gavhane, Ganesh Dongre, Shubham Mane, Shivraj Birajdar, Sidhhram Sagare – were detained by the police.

At least one activist was arrested and slapped with serious charges by the police. But after appeals by local Congress leaders, the charges were modified while others were allowed to go, said Shinde.

Modi, along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, spent half a day in Solapur to kickstart the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign.

Karnataka BJP wants state tax hike on fuel withdrawn

 Nasheman News : Slamming the Karnataka coalition government for burdening the people again, the opposition BJP on Wednesday urged Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to withdraw the 2 per cent hike in state tax on petrol and diesel.

“The basic price of petrol and diesel has declined across the country over the last 2 months due to fall in international crude oil prices. Instead of making the people benefit from lower prices, the state government had increased the sales tax on fuel by 2 per cent since January 1. It should be rolled back,” state BJP’s state unit general secretary C.T. Ravi told reporters here.

Kumaraswamy, who also holds the finance portfolio, increased the state tax to 32 per cent on petrol and to 21 per cent on diesel because their base price decreased since November.

“As the fuel prices declined after fall in crude oil rates in the global market since November, the state tax has been revised to 32 per cent on petrol from 30 per cent and to 21 per cent on diesel from 19 per cent since January 1, 2019,” said a statement by the chief minister’s office here on January 5.

Noting that the state tax on petrol was Rs 20.59 per litre and Rs 13.75 on diesel per litre, which was among the highest in the country, Ravi said the state levy was three times over that levied by the state-run oil marketing firms.

“When fuel prices decline, the ruling coalition partners (Congress and Janata Dal-Secular) say it is owing to fall in crude oil rates and when they go up, they blame the Modi government for it, indulging in double-speak,” said Ravi.

The state government had on September 17 reduced its tax on petrol to 28.75 per cent from 32 per cent and diesel to 17.73 per cent from 21 per cent in a bid to give relief to the people from on soaring international crude oil prices.

In the state budget for fiscal 2018-19 Kumaraswamy presented on July 5 Che increased the state tax on petrol by 2 per cent to 32 per cent from 30 per cent and on diesel to 21 per cent from 19 per cent with effect from July 15 despite protests and public resentment.

“We will launch a protest strike if the hike in the state tax on the fuel is not rolled back before the Sankranti festival next week,” a party official told IANS./Eom/405 words.

SC defers Ayodhya case to Jan 29

Nasheman News : The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred the Ayodhya title dispute to January 29, saying that the five judge bench to hear the case will be reconstituted as Justice U.U. Lalit has recused himself.

The apex court took the decision after senior counsel Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for one of the Muslim parties, told the bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that Justice Lalit in 1997 appeared for former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh in one of the matters related to the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute.

Singh is currently the Rajasthan Governor.

While telling the bench that personally he had no objection to the presence of Justice Lalit on the bench hearing the challenge to the 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict, he was just bringing the issue to the notice of the court. 

Thereafter Justice Lalit conveyed to Chief Justice Gogoi and other members of the bench — Justice S.A. Bobde, Justice N.V. Ramana, Justice D.Y. Chandrchud — of his reluctance to continue on the bench and recused himself. 

Chief Justice Gogoi in his order said that under the Supreme Court rules in exercise of his administrative powers, it was his perogative to decide the strength of the bench.

He said this while declining the submission by Dhawan that an earlier bench headed by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra had said that a hearing on the batch of petitions will be heard by three judge bench.

The court thereafter directed its registry to go through all the records relating to the Ayodhya case which are available with it and submit a report by January 29 as to how much time it would require for translating the documents and the case material which are in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Gurmukhi languages. 

However, when senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for one of the Hindu litigants, offered to assist the registry in handling of the papers and their translations, Chief Justice Gogoi said that he will rely entirely on his own registry to do the job. 

Having directed the secretary general of the Supreme Court to submit the report in 15 days the court directed that the reconstituted bench will hold the hearing on January 29. 

Strike second day sees minimal impact in Karnataka.

There was no major impact of the nationwide shutdown called by trade unions in Karnataka on the second day, with government offices and bus services functioning normally across the state on Wednesday. A number of reported incidences of government-run buses being vandalised by miscreants. On Tuesday, a total of 12 incidents of stone pelting against buses were reported by the state run bus corporations.

A few hundred industrial workers, joined by Anganwadi workers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), took out protest march from Town Hall in the city centre to the Raj Bhavan amidst tight police security. There were protest gatherings in major gatherings in Mysore Bank Circle and Corporation Circle as well.

The government offices, hospitals, commercial establishments, bus and metro services, however, remained largely unaffected in the state.

The 48-hour nationwide strike by the trade unions demanding labour-friendly laws and schemes has been in force since Tuesday.

State-run Karnataka State Road Transport Corp (KSRTC) operated about 3,600 of its scheduled 4,100 bus services across the state. Bus services in Bengaluru, however, were fewer, with only 428 bus services plying across the city against the 4,100 scheduled, leading to a high demand for autos and ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber.

Most of the schools in the state that had declared a two-day holiday ahead of the strike remained closed, while few opened on Wednesday. Universities were also forced to postpone examinations in light of the bandh across the state.

The trade unions on strike also held bike rallies in towns and cities waving red flags.

The striking labour unions had 12 demands including stopping all pro-corporate, anti-worker amendments to labour laws, against privatisation of transport system proposed in the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2017, institution of universal public distribution system to contain inflation, implementation of complete farm loan waiver and legislation of the right to sell at minimum support price, and measures for generation of stable employment.

Female rapist on gender-based woman; Complaint to High Court

The incident occurred in the Uttarakhand High Court after the police refused to accept the sex of a woman who had sexually transitioned to a woman, claiming her right to feminism.

According to the law, the High Court, which came to the aid of a linguistic woman, ordered the state police to inform the cause of this behavior.

The woman says in her complaint that she loves a man from Kotdwara and has been converting her into a woman to marry him.

But the woman alleged that her future husband called her to Kotdwara after raping her.

When the woman went to police station to complain about her rape, the police refused to file an IPC sub-376 (rape) complaint and filed a case under Section 377 (the criminal offense).

Asked by the woman, High Court Metalliri asked her to direct the police to change her FIR from September 37 to September 37, as she had full rights of feminism.

Justice Lokpal Singh, who listened to a woman complaint, ordered the state government to reply within four weeks.

ACB officials conducted searches in cabinet room

Bangalore: A team of ACB officials conducted searches at Puttur Shetty’s office on Tuesday in connection with the bribe money traced in the corridor of the Vidhana Soudha. Meanwhile, employee typist SJ Mohan Kumar, who was earlier involved with a bag with a bag worth Rs 25.76 lakh, had been arrested in the past five ministers.

Nasheman News : Police in Australia were on Wednesday investigating several suspicious packages sent to the Indian consulate and several other missions in Melbourne.

“The packages are being examined by attending emergency services. The circumstances surrounding the incidents are being investigated,” the Australian Federal Police said in a statement.

The packages were delivered on Wednesday, Efe news quoted the statement as saying.

Besides India, video footage showed emergency services workers attending the consulates of the US, Greece, France, Italy, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Korea and Switzerland.

Manuela Erb, the honourary consul of the Consulate of Switzerland told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the office had received a suspicious package that’s “believed to be non-hazardous, however they’re treating it as hazardous”.

On Monday, the authorities removed a suspicious package from the Argentine consulate in Sydney which was later found to be non-toxic.

Five Indians penalised for indulging in illegal betting in a day

Nasheman News : The latest edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) kicked off on January 5 and on Tuesday, a mobile court fined as many as five Indian citizens for indulging in illegal betting through their mobile phones during matches of the tournament at Dhaka’s Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium. An inter-ministerial meeting a year ago empowered the local administration in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet to operate mobile courts during cricket games to tackle illegal betting when the last edition of BPL was on. The same is being followed this year as well.

The mobile court of executive magistrate Imrul Hasan said the five Indians were penalised 4,000 Bangladeshi Taka each and were also expelled from the venue. Recently, a top anti-corruption official at the International Cricket Council said that with the spread of franchise-based cricket, the scope of corruption has also increased in the world of cricket.

“They were involved in betting with mobile phones. We imposed a fine of Tk 4,000 for each and expelled them from the ground. They will not be allowed to watch any more BPL game this season,” Hasan was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying. Three of the five Indians – Deepak, Sanjeeb Kumar and Sunil Kumar – hailed from the state of Haryana, said the magistrate.

Hasan also said that another Indian too was handed a similar punishment on Sunday. In all, 20 people, including six Indians, have been penalised in the first three days of the tournament, which will continue till February 5, he said. Even a Bangladeshi national was said to be jailed for entering the ground without a valid ticket and even threatening officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He was identified as Sajeeb Ahmed from Madaripur.

Six games were completed in the current edition of the BPL till Tuesday with three-time champions Dhaka Dynamites (twice as Dhaka Gladiators) topping the list with four points from two games. Current champions Rangpur Riders also have four points though from three matches. Sylhet Sixers, Khulna Titans and Rajshahi Kings are yet to win their first game in this season’s tournament.

‘PUBG’ online game addiction fitness trainer admitted in hospital

Nasheman News : The PUBG online game addiction has landed a fitness trainer in hospital in the sixth such case in the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir.

As per reliable sources, a fitness trainer (name not disclosed), got addicted to play PUBG online nearly ten days ago and ultimately he was admitted to the hospital when after completing one of the rounds, he started hitting him with blows and injured himself.

“The patient is unstable at the moment and has partially lost his mental balance,” a doctor (neurologist) treating him, pleading anonymity said.

He said that he is recognising people but is still not conscious and his mind is completely under the influence of the ‘PUBG’ game.

“He is under observation and we have started the treatment. We are hopeful that he will be fine in days,” said a doctor.

However, hospital sources added that it was the sixth case in a row reported in the winter capital, adding, “these are the case that has been examined and diagnosed after the patients were brought to the hospital but we apprehend that there might be many other such cases existing around but either left ignored or not being understood by the families.”

 The doctors however, have appealed to the people to keep watch on their children especially when they prefer to sit alone and operate mobile phones for long hours.

“The night hour mobile use should not be ignored and if possible, the cellphones should not be in the custody of their children during night time to prevent them from entering into trauma, which could be fatal if remains unchecked,” they added.

Meanwhile the locals have also appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik to raise the concern at the right corner and get such kind of “life-threatening” online games banned in the state and the country has well.

Pertinently China’s Online Gaming Ethics Review Committee last year in December has reviewed 20 games for containing “ethics risk” and nine of these games have been reportedly banned including “Fortnite” and “PUBG”, whereas corrective action has been proposed for the remaining 11.

‘Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds'(PUBG) is an online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole.

In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves.

The available safe area of the game’s map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters.

The last player or team standing wins the round.

Undisclosed assets worth Rs 6,000 cr detected under fgn black money law

Undisclosed assets totalling Rs 6,000 crore have been detected under the foreign black money law enacted by the government in 2015, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

Further, as on October 31, 2018, 34 prosecution complaints have been filed under the foreign black money law.

“As an outcome of the actions taken by the Income-tax Department under the Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015′ (The Black Money Act), as on October 31, 2018, undisclosed foreign assets and income valued at over Rs 6,000 crore have been detected,” Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Under the Act, a one-time compliance opportunity for a limited period was provided to those persons who have any foreign assets which have hitherto not been disclosed for the purposes of Income-tax.

In this compliance window, which closed on September 30, 2015, 648 declarations involving undisclosed foreign assets worth over Rs 4,100 crore were made. An amount of over Rs 2,470 crore has been collected by way of tax and penalty in such cases.

“Suitable action against the persons who have undisclosed foreign assets and income is taken under the Act. Such actions include enquiries, assessment of income, levy of taxes, penalties and filing of prosecution complaints in criminal courts, wherever applicable,” Shukla added.
