Additional NDRF team rushed to Meghalaya to rescue miners

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  The Central government on Friday rushed an additional National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team to Meghalaya to assist the state in evacuating 15 miners who are trapped inside an illegal coal mine for 16 days now.

Coal India Limited (CIL) officials have rushed to the site in remote Ksan area in East Jaintia Hills district. A two-member team from Kirloskar Brothers’ Limited has already reached the site.

Indian Air Force (IAF) Spokesman Wing Commander Ratnakar Singh said a C-130J Super Hercules has been tasked to airlift NDRF rescuers from Bhubaneswar to Guwahati on Friday.

“We have been to the mining site on Thursday and made preliminary assessment along with the NDRF team. We have discussed plans and strategies with the NDRF and State administration how to dewater from the pit,” N. Mahapatra of Kirloskar Brothers’ Limited, told media.

“We require a good number of powerful pumps to suck out the water and this has been informed to our senior officials,” he said.

CIL Director Technical Binay Dayal, who arrived in Shillong on Thursday and held discussions with district authorities, said that the first task is to try to get the map of the illegal coal mine.

“Our logistics and technical team are on the way to the mining site. We are hopeful that our powerful pumps reach the site soon. We have been told that several other agencies would also provide necessary assistance,” he said.

The district administration has temporarily suspended pumping of water from the coal pit since December 24. However, the NDRF rescuers team dived inside the main shaft of the coal pit but could not locate any of the miners.

“The rescue operation is still on and our divers dived yesterday (Thursday) to locate the trapped miners but could not locate any of them. There is nothing in the main shaft of the coal pit. We have used all our equipment with us including SONAR to find out if any of the miners are trapped in the main shaft,” NDRF Assistant Commandant Santosh Kumar Singh, told IANS.

Asked if the rescuers have lost hope to evacuate the trapped miners over ground, Singh said, “Rescuers never lose hope. We are all putting our best efforts to rescue them.”

However, the relatives of the trapped miners are losing hope and are expecting a miracle to occur.

Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The Rajya Sabha was on Friday adjourned for the day amid ruckus, minutes after it met for the day’s proceedings.

After the papers were laid, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu took up Zero Hour submissions. However, a few members trooped to the Chair’s podium holding placards and raising slogans.

Naidu told the members to return to their seats and raise their issues as per the procedures.

When the agitating members paid no heed, Naidu said: “I have been very patient throughout. But I think time has come now to take action.” He then adjourned the House for the day.

Earlier, the House remembered the martyrdom of the four sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, who went down fighting the Mughals.

The Members also greeted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and former Union Minister A.K. Antony on their birthdays.

6.1-magnitude quake strikes Indonesia

Nasheman News : An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia’s Papua Barat province on Friday, officials said. There was, however, no report of any casualty.

The earthquake had an epicentre of 26 km under Manokwari town, but no tsunami warning was issued, Xinhua news agency quoted an meteorology official as saying.

No major damage or casualty has been reported, Indonesia’s national disaster management agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

“The tremors only triggered panic, people were rushing outside their houses. The jolts were strongly felt for five minutes,” added.

This comes days after a tsunami struck the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra on December 22, shortly after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted in the Sunda Strait. At least 430 people were killed after the volcanic eruption triggered a massive tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity.

Congress celebrates 134th Foundation Day

Image result for Congress celebrates 134th Foundation Day

Nasheman News : India’s oldest political party, Congress celebrated its 134th Foundation Day on Friday by hoisting the national flag and remembering some of its iconic leaders and freedom fighters.

“Over the last 134 years of Congress history, we have stood for justice, equality, non-violence, unity, freedom and, above all, dialogue. For all the years to come, we will continue to uphold these values and stand with the people of our country,” the party said in a tweet.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi celebrated the day by cutting a cake with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and other senior leaders of the party.

The party said it will stand by values of non-violence, quoting in another tweet words of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the first Home Minister of India, where he said, “the measure of our non-violence will be the measure of our success”.

In another tweet, it quoted the ideal of “love and sacrifice” for the country espoused by Sarojini Naidu, an eminent poetess, freedom fighter and Congress leader.

The Congress was founded in 1885 by a British civil servant Allan Octavian Hume. Hume was a celebrated ornithologist and is considered to be “the Father of Indian Ornithology”.

Facebook moderators getting wrong interpretation of Indian law: NYT

December 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The moderators at Facebook who carry out the critical task of removing dangerous content from its platform rely on material based on incorrect interpretation of certain Indian laws, The New York Times has reported.

The documents that are used to guide Facebook’s more than 7,500 moderators span more than 1,400 pages which often contain inaccuracies and outdated information, said the report on Thursday.

One of these documents tells moderators that any post degrading an entire religion violates Indian law and should be flagged for removal.

But the law prohibits such posts only in certain conditions, such as when the intention of the users is to inflame violence, Chinmayi Arun, a legal scholar, told NYT.

Another document for moderators instructs them to “look out for” the phrase “Free Kashmir” – though the slogan, common among activists, is completely legal, the report said.

The moderators are even warned that ignoring posts that use the phrase could get Facebook blocked in India.

According to data compiled by Statista, India has the highest number of Facebook users – 294 million (as of October 2018) – 90 million more than the number of Facebook users in the US which has the second-biggest users-base for the social network.

As Facebook faces severe criticism for allowing extremist content in some countries, and censoring legitimate posts in some other places, the job of moderators who need to monitor billions of posts every day in over 100 languages is very critical.

Those moderators, at times relying on Google Translate, have mere seconds to recall countless rules and apply them to the hundreds of posts that dash across their screens each day, the NYT report said.

An examination of the documents for moderators by the paper revealed numerous gaps, biases and errors, which are limited not only to interpretation of Indian laws.

For example, the moderators were once told to remove fund-raising appeals for volcano victims in Indonesia just because a co-sponsor of the drive was on the social network’s internal list of banned groups.

Similarly, in Myanmar, a paperwork error allowed a prominent extremist group, accused of fomenting genocide, to stay on the platform for months, the report said.

While admitting that perfection was not possible, Facebook’s Head of Global Policy Management, Monika Bickert said that the company had been successful to a great extent in achieving its primary goal of preventing harm.

Image result for 3rd Test: India declare on 443/7

Nasheman News : India declared their first innings after scoring a mammoth 443/7 to leave Australia with just seven overs to bat on Day 2 of the third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Thursday.

India’s massive total was powered by a classic century from Cheteshwar Pujara (106) and half centuries from skipper Virat Kohli (82), debutant opener Mayank Agarwal (76) and Rohit Sharma (63 not out).

To add to Australia’s woes, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (34) and stumper Rishabh Pant (39) also got decent starts but more importantly, were engaged in crucial partnerships with Rohit.

For the hosts, pacer Pat Cummins emerged the hero with the cherry, returning with figures of 3/72 on a docile MCG track while Mitchell Starc contributed with two wickets.

Josh Hazlewood and lone spinner Nathan Lyon worked hard for their one wicket apiece.

Brief Scores: India 443/7 (Cheteshwar Pujara 106, Virat Kohli 82, Mayank Agarwal 76, Rohit Sharma 63 not out; Pat Cummins 3/72) vs Australia.

3rd Test: Pujara, Kohli, Rohit put India in driver’s seat on Day 2

December 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Array

Nasheman News : Australian openers survived the early jitters to post 8/0 at stumps on Day 2 of the third Test after India declared their first innings at a mammoth 443/7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Thursday.

Aaron Finch (3 batting) and Marcus Harris (5 batting) went back unscathed after the Indian new ball duo of Ishant Shamra and Jasprit Bumrah bowled some hostile stuff to spice things up for an exciting contest on Day 3.

Earlier, India’s massive total was powered by a classic century from Cheteshwar Pujara (106) and excellent half centuries from skipper Virat Kohli (82), debutant opener Mayank Agarwal (76) and Rohit Sharma (63 not out).

To add to Australia’s woes, Indian Vice Captain Ajinkya Rahane (34) and stumper Rishabh Pant (39) also got decent starts and more importantly, were engaged in crucial partnerships with Rohit.

Resuming the final session at 346/4, India lost Rahane quickly to his old nemesis, Nathan Lyon, who sweated for 40 overs to get that one wicket in India’s first essay.

Interestingly, this was the ninth occasion Rahane fell to Lyon, making it the most number of times the tweaker has dismissed any player.

Australia could have had Rohit dismissed even before Rahane’s departure if only substitute fielder Peter Siddle had not dropped a sitter at backward square leg off Lyon and on the very next ball Travis Head made a mess of a catch, when the Mumbai right-hander was on 15.

Rohit, who by now had added 62 runs for the fifth wicket with his Mumbai teammate Rahane, took full advantage of the two lives to not only get to a crafty half century but also add another vital 76-run stand with Pant for the sixth wicket.

Pant looked in fine touch but inexperience overpowered the southpaw as he succumbed to pacer Mitchell Starc once the third new ball was taken.

New man Ravindra Jadeja hardly got his eyes in before being caught behind, even as Kohli signalled the declaration of the tourists’ first innings, leaving almost 6-7 overs for Australia to bat.

Earlier, resuming the second day at 215/2, Kohli and Pujara played out a wicketless first session, scoring 62 runs to take it to 277/2 at lunch.

After coming back, Kohli (82) made his intentions clear and went after the Australian bowlers until he jarred his back while playing a pull shot against Starc.

The back continued to trouble the India skipper, who eventually fell playing an uppercut off Starc to be caught comfortably by Finch at third man.

Interestingly, this is the first time Kohli has not reached three figures after reaching 50 in first innings in Tests in Australia.

Two overs after Kohli’s departure, Pat Cummins, the sole wicket-taker on the opening day, doubled the joy for the hosts with a fuller delivery that ended Pujara’s 319-ball marathon innings.

Pujara was undone by a ball that stayed too low and crashed into his stumps, once again underlying the confusing nature of the pitch at the MCG here.

For the Aussies, pacer Pat Cummins emerged the hero with the cherry, returning with figures of 3/72 on a docile MCG track while Mitchell Starc contributed well with two wickets.

Josh Hazlewood and the lone spinner Nathan Lyon worked hard for their one wicket apiece.

Brief scores:

Australia (first innings): 8/0 (Marcus Harris 5 batting, Aaron Finch 3 batting) vs India (first innings): 443/7 (Cheteshwar Pujara 106, Virat Kohli 82, Mayank Agarwal 76, Rohit Sharma 63 not out; Pat Cummins 3/72).
