‘Rs 20,000-crore loss due to floods, drought in Karnataka’

December 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Karnataka suffered an estimated Rs 20,000-crore loss during the kharif season owing to floods and landslides in its southwest districts and acute drought conditions in other regions, an official statement said on Wednesday.

“The prevailing condition is unprecedented, as the state was affected by floods and landslides and is facing acute drought conditions during kharif and rabi seasons, impacting the state’s economy,” the state Revenue Department said in the statement.

Of the southern state’s 30 districts, 45 taluks (sub-districts) in 8 districts were affected by floods and landslides while 100 taluks are reeling under drought due to scanty rainfall in the rabi season, it noted.

Heavy monsoon rains, which caused floods and landslides in Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts led to widespread destruction of crops, houses and infrastructure, besides displacing hundreds of people.

During the north-east monsoon period (October to December), the state, however, faced 49 per cent deficit rainfall, with north interior region that accounts for 90 per cent of rabi sowing, recorded 66 per cent rain deficit.

Seeds or saplings are sown during July-October for kharif crops and November-March for rabi crops.

During the rabi season, 153 taluks have been affected by drought so far, the statement added.

In the drought-hit regions, drinking water is being supplied to 283 villages through 524 water tankers and 315 private borewells (through pipelines) in 17 districts of the state.

“Since sowing has been impacted during the rabi season, fodder shortage is likely in the coming months. Fodder will be supplied at subsidised rates through its banks,” the statement said.

The state government has also increased man-days in the drought-hit districts to 150 days from 100 days across the state this year.

“Awareness campaign is being held in drought-affected villages to ensure greater participation of workforce and prevent migration from rural to urban areas,” it added.

A man-day refers to the work accomplished by a person in a day.

About 6 lakh man-days are generated per day and 1 crore per month across the state, the statement said, estimating over 10 crore man-days to be generated by March 2019

Gadkari to call CMs’ meet on Karnataka’s water project

December 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari will convene a meeting of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers on the implementation of the controversial Cauvery river project at Mekedatu for drinking water supply, said an official on Wednesday.

“Gadkari conveyed the decision on the proposed meeting to Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy when they met in New Delhi,” said an official of the Chief Minister’s Office in Bengaluru in a statement.

Karnataka has sought the Central government’s approval to build a dam at Mekedatu on the river near Kanakapura in Ramanagaram district, about 100km southwest of Bengaluru, for storing and supplying its water to the parched districts of Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts.

Objecting to the project fearing denial of its share of the river water, Tamil Nadu has also petitioned the Central government and the Supreme Court not to allow Karnataka to build the balancing reservoir at the goat’s leap gorge.

“Kumaraswamy has sought Gadkari’s intervention to resolve the issue between the two riparian states and convince Tamil Nadu that the project would be beneficial to both the neighbouring states,” said the statement.

As sharing the river water for agriculture and drinking in the state’s old Mysuru region became contentious, leading to the apex court modifying the inter-state dispute tribunal award, storing it (water) at Mekedatu for drinking only has turned into a protracted legal and political battle.

“Tamil Nadu is objecting central permission in mid-November to Karnataka to even prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for building the dam on the grounds that storing water would deny its share for its farmers in the delta region,” an official of the state Water Resources Department told IANS here.

The project is estimated to cost the state a whopping Rs 5,192 crore.

Tamil Nadu has also disputed Karnataka’s claim on the project’s purpose, as storing the river water will allow it generate hydel power and thus restrict its flow into its delta region.

Kumaraswamy also sought Gadkari’s intervention to make Goa allow Karnataka utilise the Mahadayi river water for drinking purpose in the four drought-prone districts in the state’s northwest region.

“Though the inter-state river tribunal has permitted Karnataka to utilise the water for drinking purpose, the Goa government has approached the top court against the tribunal award, which is in the state’s favour,” said the official.

In a related development, Gadkari, who is also the Surface Transport Minister, has agreed to build an elevated highway between Hubballi and Dharwad, about 400km from Bengaluru to ease the gridlock between the twin cities in the state’s northwest region.

“Gadkari has directed the state government to complete the land acquisition to allow the state-run National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to begin the elevated road projected work,” added the statement.

State PWD Minister and Kumaraswamy’s elder brother H.D. Revanna, state Chief Secretary T.M. Vijayabhaskar and Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister E.V. Ramana Reddy were present on the occasion.

Nasheman News : With the arrest of three persons including two school owners, the Delhi Police claimed to have busted a fake education board syndicate that cheated over 10,000 students in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and other states, an officer said on Wednesday.

Altaf Raja, 23, Manoj Kumar, 32, and Shambhu Nath Mishra, 46 — all residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria and Balrampur districts — were arrested in separate raids between December 12 and 23.

“Police teams first arrested Altaf Raja while giving fake board certificate of higher secondary to a decoy customer in Vikas Puri of Delhi. Altaf Raja was granted 10-day police remand. Following his interrogation, Shamnbu Nath Mishra and Manoj Kumar, owners of two schools in Deoria, were arrested from their locations in Uttar Pradesh,” Additional Commissioner of Police Rajiv Ranjan told media.

“During investigation, we found that Altaf Raja and his accomplices were operating fake education board named ‘Board of Higher Secondary Education’ in Vikas Puri. They had cheated over 10,000 innocent students after convincing that their board is recognised and provides mark-sheets and certificates of 10th and 12th in only two to three months for Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000,” Ranjan said.

“The gang members collected the details of students on WhatsApp and received the amount in their bank accounts,” the officer said.

“A complaint in this regard was also received from the Directorate of Education of Delhi,” the officer said, adding that Altaf Raja was last year arrested by the Delhi Police for running another similar fake education board in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony.

After being later released on bail, Altaf again started a similar racket with his accomplices.

“The gang members, active in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat and other states, were involved in circulating and distributing mark-sheets and certificates of their fake education board which has 23 websites,” he said.

“A large numbers of fake mark-sheets, certificates, provisional certificates and migration certificates, answer sheets, nominal rolls, question papers, record registers of students, and certificates of Class 10 and 12 were recovered from their possession,” he added.

Muslim women urge for unanimous passage of triple talaq bill

December 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : The Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) on Wednesday called upon the government and the opposition parties to pass the law on Muslim triple talaq bill through “consensus, without political point-scoring”.

On Thursday, the Parliament is scheduled to discuss the proposed The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, after the government issued an Ordinance on it earlier this year.

The Ordinance was brought after the government failed to push it through the Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session of Parliament owing to lack of unanimity among various political parties, said BMMA Co-Founder Zakia Soman.

The Ordinance makes instant triple talaq a punishable offence with a three-year jail term, and Soman urged that it would be ideal if both Houses of Parliament pass the Bill unanimously, especially since some important amendments have been made to the original Bill.

For the much-anticipated legislation, she said that today women across the country are protesting, writing to women’s commissions and observing token fasts for legal protection.

“We urge all political parties to recognise, acknowledge and extend their support to the demands of Muslim women. For too long have they (Muslim women) been discriminated against the faced insecurity, fears for life, threats of instant divorce, polygamy, juvenile marriage and deprivation of inheritance rights,” said Soman.

However, now the Muslim women have organised themselves, armed with the knowledge of both their constitutional rights and rights as per the Quran, which need to be acknowledged and realised by all political parties, she pointed out.

“The tide is turning. This law, if it becomes a reality, will be important and the BMMA will continue to fight for comprehensive codification of Muslim family law where gender-just provisions pertaining to age of marriage, mehr, consent, polygamy, halala, muta, maintenance and inheritance are also legislated upon,” Soman added.

The BMMA has published its version of a comprehensive Muslim family law and demanded that the government consider the same for further discussions to work towards a comprehensive law which has been hanging for long, she said.

Ajmal apologises for abusing journalist, faces FIR

December 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : A day after abusing a journalist, and threatening him of “smashing his head”, Lok Sabha MP Moulana Badaruddin Ajmal expressed his apologies on Thursday, saying he respects media persons.

Ajmal, a Lok Sabha MP from Assam’s Dhubri constituency, landed himself in a controversy on Wednesday over the episode.

Ajmal, who leads the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), faced condemnation from from different sections over the incident. Several media organisations have threatened to file FIRs against him.

Apologising over the episode, Ajmal, who is also a perfume trader, wrote on Twitter: “Media is the fourth pillar of democracy and I have always respected media persons and everyone knows that. I have sincere regards for them. The Mankachar incident was an unintentional aberration and I sincerely apologize for that to all concerned.”

Guwahati-based Digital Media Journalist Association of Assam (DiMJAA) has said it will file an FIR against Ajmal on Thursday.

Members of the media fraternity also staged a protest on Thursday at Dispur Press Club, wearing black badge.

The AIUDF chief got agitated on Wednesday when a journalist asked him if he will side with the party that comes to power in New Delhi.

He was addressing a press conference at Mankachar to honour the AIUDF leaders who won in the recently held rural polls in Assam.

Ajmal not only verbally abused the journalist but also asked him to get out of the venue.

“I’ll smash your head,” he said, while snatching the boom of the journalist.

Grandmom arrested for murdering 1 month old grandson

December 26, 2018 by Nasheman

The accused claimed that she was worried about the financial toll the child would have on her son, the father.

Days after a 29-day-old infant was found smothered to death in Bengaluru’s Viveknagar, Ashoknagar police arrested the baby’s grandmother on the grounds of murder. 53-year-old Vijayalakshmi was taken into custody by the police on Tuesday after she confessed to the crime.

On December 21, at around 5.30pm, Vijayalakshmi had strangled the child with her dupatta while the child’s mother, Stella, was tending to the baby’s twin in another room. She then covered the baby with her dupatta and placed it under the cot before going for her routine evening walk.

When Stella found her son missing, she informed her husband and Vijayalakshmi’s son, Karthik. The duo approached the Ashoknagar police to give a complaint. Police came and searched the home and found the child under the cot and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Central) D Devaraja said that Vijayalakshmi had committed the crime because she felt that the child would be too much of a financial strain on her son. “My second grandson was born with health problems and was treated for 10 days after birth. The treatment continued even after we brought him home. On Thursday, my son and daughter-in-law decided to change their doctor as the baby showed no sign of improvement. He was treated for two days at a private nursing home in Fraser Town. I was worried he may not survive and it would burden my jobless son. So I decided to murder the child as my son would, anyway, be left with the other baby. I killed him when Stella was in the washroom,” Vijayalakshmi told the police.

However, there are also allegations that Vijayalakshmi was upset with her son’s decision to marry a woman of a different religion, which prompted her to commit the crime.
