India in SAFF U-15 football championship semis

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

India advanced to the semi-finals of the SAFF U-15 Championship as they blanked Bhutan 4-0 in their last Group league match played at the ANFA Complex in Kathmandu on Monday.

For India, Shubho Paul scored a brace while Subba Kushang and Xalxo Aman scored one apiece. India led 1-0 at half-time.

The Indians got off to a perfect start as the first goal came as early as the 4th minute when Shubho converted from the spot – placing it to the right of the rival goalkeeper Gyeltshen Dorji.

The rivals did manage to sneak into the Indian box on a couple of occasions, especially immediately after resumption.

The Indians’ perseverance soon paid dividends as the second goal came in the 66th minute, and it was all wrapped in individual brilliance. Receiving a loose ball in his own half, the irrepressible Subba ran past the entire rival defence, dribbled past three, entered the box and placed into the far corner.

The third goal came in the 83rd minute as Shubho completed his brace. It was a build-up which started in India’s half and after some casual exchanges, Shubho followed up a vicious long ball, sped past all and put it in.

Aman completed the rout in the 89th minute when he tapped into an empty net after the rival goalkeeper misread a Harsh Patre free kick.

Sabarimala temple open to all: High Court

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

The Kerala High Court (Devasom Bench) on Monday ruled that the Sabarimala temple was not only for Hindus but it had a tradition of welcoming people from all faiths.

The ruling, in response to a petition filed by Hindu activist and BJP fellow traveller T.G. Mohan Das, came as the Kerala government decided to step up the security in and around the temple when it opens next month.

Das petitioned that the high court should rule that the temple should be open to only devotees. The court did not accept this and pointed out that the Sabarimala temple was open to everyone.

The court, however, asked the Kerala government and the Travancore Devasom Board to file their affidavits on the issue and posted the case after two weeks.

The court also pointed out that there was no rule that all devotees who go to the temple should carry the sacred kit on their head.

But it said this was a must for the pilgrims who wish to mount the 18 steps that lead to the sanctum santorum.

In a second petition that came up before the Devasom Bench of the High Court, four women, including two women advocates, sought the protection of the court for praying at the temple.

The state government said if the pilgrim was a devotee, all the necessary arrangements would be provided for safe pilgrimage.

Satisfied with the reply, the court told the women that the court had nothing to do in this regard as the government had assured safe pilgrimage.

According to the latest figures, the total number of people arrested for creating trouble in the temple town and other places between October 16 and 22 as of Monday morning has touched 3,505. A total of 529 cases have been registered in various police stations.

The police have until now released pictures of 420 people whom they claim incited or took part in violence and unrest. On Monday morning, pictures of another 210 people were released, implying more arrests were on the cards.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Police on Monday decided to increase the number of top officials who would be posted in the temple town to oversee security arrangements when it reopens.

They would include two Additional Director Generals, four Inspector Generals besides other officers, overseeing a total of about 5,000 policemen and women.

The temple will open for a day on November 5 and then again on November 16 for almost two months for the routine annual pilgrimage.

In a related development, senior Congress legislator K. Muraleedharan urged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to call an all-party meeting to discuss the Sabarimala issue.

Congress MLA called Modi is a dengue mosquito, use pesticide to get rid of him

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Political dialogue in Maharashtra hit another low after a Congress MLA called Prime Minister a dengue mosquito.

Addressing a public rally, Congress MLA from Solapur South Praniti Shinde said, “We have a new dengue mosquito in our country, whose name is Modi baba. Everyone is falling sick because of him. So do whatever you can, spray pesticides and throw him out of the power next time.”

Besides this, the honourable Congress MLA called the local BJP MP Sharad Bansode a drunkard.

“The BJP leaders have not spent a single penny for the development of this district. What the government has given to our district are two leaders who keep fighting amongst themselves and one drunkard MP,” she said.

Responding to her jibe, the honourable BJP MP sought to shame the Congress legislator by calling her “someone who wears sleeveless clothes and attends parties”.

“Those who were caught in rave parties in sleeveless clothes have no right to attack me. I know what she does in Mumbai. If I open my mouth she will have no face to show in Solapur. This is the last warning to her,” Bansode said.

City should be garbage free by Oct 31 : HC

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari took Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to task and ordered the BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad to put an end to garbage dumped on the city’s roads.

“Mr Commissioner, the garbage in Bengaluru must be cleaned up by October 31 and how you do it is your problem,” said Justice Maheshwari, while hearing a case related to storm water drain clean-up.

Justice Maheshwari said, “We will hold you responsible if the city is not clean by October 31, when we are taking up the PIL petitions related to garbage menace. You can’t pinpoint the fault on others,” the Judge added. The Judge also reprimanded the BBMP’s engineers and ordered the Commissioner to hold training sessions for them.

Justice Maheshwari pointed out that there is a need to investigate the nexus between private builders and BBMP officials regarding the issue of storm water drain encroachments. “The BBMP has failed to address its civic duties,” he said.

Responding to the High Court’s order, Bengaluru Mayor Gangambike said the BBMP would concentrate on removing the garbage on the roads first. The other works related to dumping near lakes and others will be done once the roads are cleared.

Air pollution increasing factor for stroke among youngsters: Experts

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Tiny air pollution particles can also increase the risk of stroke in youngsters and healthy people by damaging the inner lining of their veins and arteries, according to medical experts.

Praveen Gupta, Director, Neurology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon, said that there has been a rise of young patients in the last few years.

“We get around at least three new young patients almost every month. The number of young stroke patients has almost doubled as compared to last few years. Studies suggest that major risk factors like air pollution and smoking increase stroke incidences both in the short term and long term,” Gupta added.

According to the experts, quality of air in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) is already very toxic and such a high level of pollution increases the rate of strokes.

“High level of PM 2.5 in the air increases risk of cardiovascular mortality. International studies have linked relation between pollution and stroke risk. In India situation can be more dangerous,” Vinay Goyal, professor, Department of Neurology, AIIMS, said on the occasion of World Stroke Day.

Among early symptoms, one may face weakness on one side of the body, feel difficulty in speaking or understanding speech and seeing with one or both eyes.

Other symptoms are dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, fainting or unconsciousness, change in sensation on one side of body.

“People are unaware of the linkage of stroke with air pollution and often do not take the necessary steps to avoid it. Even after stroke attacks, people underestimate the importance of rehabilitation, which can be the key to complete recovery. For the patient who cannot go to hospitals for regular physiotherapy sessions, home healthcare is the solution,” Gaurav Thukral, COO, HealthCare at Home said.

Muzaffarpur case: Ex-Bihar Minister’s husband surrenders

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Bihar Minister Manju Verma’s husband Chandrasekhar Verma surrendered before a court on Monday in connection to the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.

Chandrasekhar Verma, who was absconding for over a month, surrendered in the Begusarai District Court after a lower court and the Patna High Court repeatedly rejected his interim bail petitions.

In September, the police issued an arrest warrant against Chandrasekhar Verma in connection with an FIR registered by the Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) under the Arms Act.

The Patna High Court on Oct 9 rejected an anticipatory bail plea by Manju Verma against arrest by the CBI, which is probing the Muzaffarpur shelter home horror.

At least 34 girl inmates of the shelter home were found to have been raped during a social audit in June.

The CBI has seized 50 live cartridges from the former Minister’s Begusarai home.

Manju Verma resigned on August 8 following allegations that Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the case, had links with her husband.

Arrested on June 2, Thakur was lodged in the Muzaffarpur jail and was shifted to the Bhagalpur Central Jail last week.

Of the 42 girls lodged at the short-stay home run by Thakur’s NGO, 34 were found to have been sexually assaulted. The crime came to light after a social audit by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

SC to hear Ayodhya title suit in January 2019

October 29, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the listing of the Ayodhya title suit matter in January 2019 before an appropriate bench. However, it declined to specify any dates.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed the hearing for next year on a batch of petitions challenging the 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict trifurcating the disputed site in Ayodhya into three parts for Ram Lalla, Nirmohi Akhara and the original Muslim litigant.

Besides Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph were also on the bench.

On September 27, the top court bench led by then Chief Justice Dipak Misra, along with Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, by a 2:1 majority rejected the plea challenging the high court judgment and had directed that the matter would be heard by a three-judge bench from October 29.

The newly constituted bench on Monday was expected to hear a batch of petitions filed by both the sides — Hindu and Muslim stakeholders — challenging the high court judgement.

The Muslim petitioners had pressed for hearing the challenge to the high court judgment by a five-judge bench as the court had relied on a 1994 top court judgment that said a mosque was not essential to Islam for offering ‘namaz’.
