Islamic scholars speak against extremism, for modernisation

October 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Grand muftis, Islamic religious leaders, from 73 countries on Thursday concluded here a three-day conference aimed at moderating how religious figures discuss Islam so as to counter the effects of extremism and increase the involvement of Muslim youth in peaceful displays of their faith.

During the fourth edition of the conference, held in Cairo and focused on the issuance of “fatwa” – religious guidelines promulgated by religious leaders, participants discussed a broad spectrum of topics, including organ transplants, divorce and stem cells.

“Our main concern in this summit is to redefine fatwa and reclaim fatwa from the radicals,” Ibrahim Negm, adviser to Egyptian Grand Mufti Shawki Allam told Efe.

Touching on topics ranging from divorce and marriage practices to inheritance and scientific activities, a fatwa is released publically as a way for Muslims to live an involved and connected spiritual life in the modern world.

“Our purpose is to revisit the Muslim tradition and … the heritage (writen in) books hundreds of years ago. We want to read them afresh in the light of contemporary issues. We are living in the 21st century, we are living in a global village and this has impacted how fatwas are issued,” Negm added.

The conference also discussed women’s rights and the use of the “niqab,” the long Muslim women’s gown and veil which completely covers the body and face.

“We emphasize the essence rather than the form … the way people dress is different from one Muslim country to another, so you have in the Gulf a certain way of dressing while in Egypt the way Muslims dress is different … (The same is the case) in Turkey. Meanwhile, in Europe Muslim (men and women dress in a different way), this is based on customs and traditions of Muslim community,” Negm stressed.

Negm announced that religious leaders will “launch an online portal that reaches young people and speaks to them in different languages”.

Government should be alert to Urban Naxals: RSS chief

October 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Warning the country against Urban Naxalism, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday said the government and the administration have to be alert to ensure that a vicious and hostile atmosphere that weakens and destroys social cohesion is curbed.

“The actual presence of Jihadi and terrorist elements in one way or other in such incidents is a common factor among all these. So the emerging conclusion is, this is a bigger canny conspiracy in collusion with forces from within and outside the country.

“It no more remains just a power politics by the opposition, but in this process, politically ambitious individuals and groups — either knowingly or unknowingly — and weaker sections crushed under deprivation and neglect get drawn as ammunition unknowingly or unwillingly,” he said in his annual Vijayadashami address at the RSS headquarters here.

Bhagwat said the government must also keep a constant vigil on such “incendiary” elements and forces so that they were not able to perpetrate nuisance.

“Slowly in the absence of any support from society, these incendiary elements will be completely defused. The administration has to make its intelligence gathering mechanism more comprehensive and alert. The schemes for the public good will have to reach the last man of the society through their prompt implementation. It will have to work with skill an diligence to ascertain law and order,” he said.

Bhagwat said that “forces with selfish motives” attempted to use those severely affected due to deprivation, injustice and negligence as “cannon fodder” for anti-national and criminal activities.

“The selfish power hungry politics with sheer disrespect for social harmony, legal and constitutional discipline and with an eye on votes in upcoming elections have been apparently clearly behind these machination.

“But this time an atmosphere of divergence, separatism, violence, acerbic hatred and going to the extent of fuelling anti-national sentiments is being created by exploiting these grievances,” he added.

Bhagwat said those leading and abetting violence during agitations were “votaries” of Urban Maoism.

He said “Urban Maoists” had contacts in social and other media, intellectual circles and other institutions associated with “such activities”.

“They execute this by defending such activities through intellectual and other methods, through delusory public campaigns related to agitations, while keeping a safe distance and maintaining their so-called eminent positions.

“They are experts in freely using deceit and poisonous provocative language to make their vicious campaign even more potent.”

Bhagwat said their activities done with the help of enemy nations was considered as “an additional skill”.

“This is a bigger canny conspiracy in collusion with forces from within and outside the country.”

Modi’s cronyism putting IAF pilots at risk: Rahul

October 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the Narendra Modi government’s focus on renegotiating UPA-era defence deals instead of finalising them, was causing life risks for the Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots, who are compelled to fly “ancient” aircraft.

“Since 2014, instead of closing the deals that had been negotiated by the Congress-led UPA government, the present government has focussed on renegotiating them just to benefit crony capitalists.

“And so, our pilots are forced to put their lives at risk each day — flying ancient Jaguars, that are kept in the air using parts scrounged from junk yards in France and other parts of the world,” said Gandhi on Facebook.

“Not only is this shameful, it reduces India’s prestige globally and puts the lives of our pilots at risk,” he said over the IAF’s drive to acquire airframes and spares from overseas grounded-fighters to upgrade the ageing Jaguar fleet.

Raking up the Rafale deal, Gandhi said: “The UPA’s Rafale deal for 126 aircraft would have transformed the Indian Air Force allowing us to scrap and replace ancient aircraft like the Jaguar.

“It involved the transfer of technology to HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) which would have helped make us become more self-reliant in the future.

“Instead, the deal was re-worked to Anil Ambani’s benefit and reduced to just 36 aircraft — all made in France! These aircraft will take years to arrive in India,” he added.

State owned oil firms cut Petrol, diesel prices

October 18, 2018 by Nasheman

Petrol and diesel prices Thursday were reduced for the first time in over two months because of a drop in the cost of production, according to state-owned oil firms. Petrol price was cut by 21 paise per litre and diesel by 11 paise, a price notification issued by state retailers said. This is the first price cut arising from a drop in international oil prices.

The rates were reduced by a minimum Rs 2.50 per litre across the country on October 5, when the government cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 1.50 a litre and asked oil PSUs to subsidise the fuels by another Re 1 a litre. The reduction in BJP-ruled states was more as they matched this cut by an equivalent reduction in local sales tax or VAT.

Petrol in Delhi now costs Rs 82.62 per litre as against Rs 82.83 a litre previously. A litre of diesel now costs Rs 75.58 as compared to Rs 75.69 previously. In Mumbai, petrol now costs Rs 88.08 per litre and diesel Rs 79.24.

The price cut follows international oil prices trading near the lowest level in a month on a bigger-than-expected gain in American stockpiles. West Texas Intermediate for November delivery traded 11 cents lower at USD 69.64 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent for December settlement was at USD 79.89 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. Brent had earlier this month hit a four-year high of USD 86.74 a barrel.

Prior to Thursday’s cut in rates, diesel price had risen by Rs 2.74 per litre since October 5 to more than wipe away the excise duty cut and oil firm subsidy. Petrol price had during this period risen by Rs 1.33 a litre. Before the October 5 price cut, petrol in Delhi had hit an all-time high of Rs 84 per litre and diesel was at record Rs 75.45. This came down to Rs 81.50 per litre for petrol and Rs 72.95 in case of diesel.

In Mumbai, petrol had hit a peak of Rs 91.34 hit on October 4 and diesel was sold at a record high of Rs 80.10. After the Centre cut excise duty by Rs 1.50 per litre and asked PSU oil firms to subsidise fuel by Re 1, Maharashtra and Gujarat governments were among the first to announce a matching Rs 2.50 cut.

They were later joined by Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Assam, Uttarakhand, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh and Bihar with similar moves. Jammu and Kashmir, which is under the governor’s rule, too reduced the tax on the two fuel. Maharashtra, however, reduced VAT only on petrol and not on diesel.

Even before the excise duty cut, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh had last month reduced VAT to cushion consumers for a spate of price increases. The reduction in excise duty on October 5, only the second in four years of BJP-led NDA rule, will dent Central government revenues by Rs 10,500 crore and was aimed at cooling retail prices that had shot up to an all-time high.

The BJP-government at the centre had raised excise duty on petrol by Rs 11.77 a litre and that on diesel by Rs 13.47 a litre in nine instalments between November 2014 and January 2016 to shore up finances as global oil prices fell, but then cut the tax just once in October last year by Rs 2 a litre.

Prior to October 5 cut, petrol price had risen by Rs 6.86 a litre and diesel by Rs 6.73 since mid-August.

Complaint booked against Man gives ‘triple talaq’ to wife via WhatsApp.

October 18, 2018 by Nasheman

A 26-year-old Muslim man in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra allegedly gave triple talaq to his wife through WhatsApp, and was booked following a complaint lodged by her, police said Thursday.

The man, Javed Saber Pathan, a resident of Khandala village in Vaijapur taluka in the district, was booked on Wednesday under section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2018, a police officer said.

“Javed had married Shabana Nisar Shaikh alias Sabha in December 2016. Things were fine between them for about a year. However, after that they regularly started arguing over small issues,” police inspector Anant Kulkarni said.

“On September 9 (2018), Javed dropped Shabana at her maternal aunt’s house in Kannad tehsil (in the district), but did not return to take her back. Shabana’s parents visited his house to request him to patch up with her. But on September 23, Javed sent a triple talaq message on her WhatsApp,” he added.

Shabana lodged a complaint against him with Vaijapur police station on Wednesday, following which a case was registered, Kulkarni said.

Javed was yet to be arrested, the inspector said adding that an investigation has been launched into the case. On 28 December 2017, the Lok Sabha had passed The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017.

The bill made instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddah) in any form spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp illegal and void, with up to three years in jail for the husband.

The Union cabinet last month approved an ordinance making triple talaq a punishable offence.

Alok Nath absence for court hearing, Orders to present for the next hearing,

October 18, 2018 by Nasheman

After accusing Alok Nath of sexual harassment, TV writer Vinta Nanda filed a police complaint against the actor on Wednesday. While Vinta Nanda said that the process of lodging the complaint was smooth, however, the Mumbai court objected to Alok Nath’s absence from the court and asked his lawyers to ensure that he is present in the next hearing as he is the main person.

In the wake of the Me Too movement, TV writer-producer Vinta Nanda had accused Alok Nath of rape and sexual harassment about 19 years ago. Ever since Nanda accused Alok Nath, a lot of actresses have come out in the open and accused Alok Nath of sexual harassment. In one of the latest developments, on Wednesday, Vinta Nanda made an official police complaint against Alok Nath in Mumbai. After filing the complaint, Vinta Nanda said that the police complaint has been accepted by the police and thanked the officials for their help.

While Vinta Nanda admitted that it wasn’t easy to recount the whole event which took place in the 90s, however, Nanda is happy that the entire process went smoothly. However, as reported by media, a Mumbai court didn’t pass an interim order and allowed writer-producer, who accused actor Alok Nath of rape and violence, to use social media to comment on the ordeal and the allegations against the actor.

Few days back, Alok Nath had filed a Rs. 1 defamation case against writer-producer Vinta Nanda. Earlier, while talking to a news channel, Alok Nath’s lawyer, Ashok Saraogi dismissed all the charges leveled against his client and said that Alok Nath will speak at an appropriate time. But on Wednesday, while hearing Alok Nath’s defamation suit, the court questioned Alok Nath’s lawyers for Nath’s absence. While the court asked Alok Nath’s lawyers to make necessary amendments in the suit, owing to technical errors in it, the court dismissed his lawyer’s plea to exempt Alok Nath to be present in the court. “Alok Nath’s lawyer asked for the actor’s exemption to be present in the court, to which the defence objected stating that he is the main person and needs to be present. The court also objected to his absence and asked him to be present in the next hearing, which is slated to be held on October 25,” as quoted by media.

In retrospect, Vinta Nanda had recounted her account of rape on Facebook detailing the years of isolation, trauma and depression that she endured. today as we speak, Vinta Nanda stands fearless as she had said, “I am fearless today because I have spoken what I had to and I’ve let it out.”

Vinta Nanda was the writer and producer of Tv serial Tara, in which Alok Nath played a lead role.
