Shaw youngest Indian to crack hundred on debut as India reach 232/3

October 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut as India rode on the Mumbai teenager’s fluent 134 to post 232/3 at Tea against the West Indies in the first Test here on Thursday.

Shaw, at 18 years and 329 days, reached the historic three-figure mark off just 99 balls at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

The record was previously held by Abbas Ali Baig, who at the age of 20 years 131 days, scored a half-century against England in Manchester in 1959.

Shaw is also the second youngest Indian ever to score a Test century after Sachin Tendulkar who cracked a ton at 17 years and 107 days in 1990 vs England in Manchester.

Shaw, who opened the innings for India, took 99 balls to get to his maiden hundred. His innings was laced with 15 boundaries.

Besides Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara also scored a good looking 86 in his own backyard but missed out on a hundred.

Skipper Virat Kohli, who was all smiles when young Shaw raised his bat after reaching the milestone, was at the crease on 4 with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (batting 0) with Shaw offering an easy return catch to leggie Devendra Bishoo trying to play against the turn.

Shaw and Pujara added 206 runs for the second wicket as the tourists were sent on a leatherhunt for large parts of the second session.

Shaw’s innings was studded with 19 fours while Pujara hit 14 boundaries before poking at a length ball half-heartedly to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off pacer Sherman Lewis, who bagged his first Test scalp.

Earlier, Opting to bat, the hosts lost K.L. Rahul for a duck in the very first over of the two-match series as Caribbean pacer Shannon Gabriel caught the Indian opener in front of the wickets.

Brief scores: India 232/3 in 51 overs (Prithvi Shaw 134, Cheteshwar Pujara 86, Virat Kohli batting 4, Ajinkya Rahane batting 0; Shannon Gabriel 1/38)

Delhi HC acquits man in rape-murder case of octogenarian

October 4, 2018 by Nasheman

The Delhi High Court on Thursday acquitted a man of the charges of raping and murdering an 81-year-old widow in 2014 at her south Delhi residence four years ago.

The High Court however dubbed the crime as “horrific” and said that an elderly woman had been done to death in the most inhuman manner.

A bench of Justices S. Muralidhar and Vinod Goel acquitted domestic help Neeraj Safi of the charges pressed under Sections 302 (murder), 375 (rape) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The High Court order to set aside a trial court’s conviction order came on Safi’s appeal.

“Howsoever strong a suspicion might be, it cannot constitute proof and is insufficient to return a finding of guilt. The case against the appellant had to be proved beyond reasonable doubt. The prosecution has failed to do that in the present case,” the bench said.

Safi, a resident of Madhubani in Bihar, was accused of the crime at his employer’s Greater Kailash-II house on July 7, 2014. On January 31 2017, the trial court convicted Safi of rape, murder and destruction of evidence.

The High Court also said that the prosecution has failed to prove the motive of the crime as nothing belonging to the deceased was in fact stolen and other household items remained untouched.

“The trial court overlooked the above legal position and erred in holding that not proving the motive was not fatal to the case of the prosecution,” the court said.

The High Court also found that there are too many gaps in the chain of circumstances leading to the crime.

“Neither the forensics report nor the post-mortem conclusively establishes that it was the appellant who had any sexual contact with the deceased,” the court said.

“With medical and forensic evidence ruling out the possibility of the appellant having committed the sexual assault on the deceased, the prosecution has failed to prove the motive for the crime.”

Police had said that the woman’s post-mortem revealed that she was beaten up, strangled with a dupatta and set on fire.

For talks with India, Pakistan seeks US help; gets rejected again

October 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Islamabad is seeking an American role in facilitating talks between India and Pakistan because the two neighbouring countries are not engaging bilaterally, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said, warning that absence of such facilitation could lead to escalation of tension.

But the latest Pakistani request in this regard has again been rejected by the US, the top Pakistani diplomat told a Washington audience on Wednesday, a day after he had meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton, during which he raised the issue only to be pushed back by the Trump administration.

“When we asked the US, to play a facilitating role…Why do we ask? Simply because we are not engaging bilaterally. And that bilateral disengagement is…a distraction. We want to focus, we want to move on the western side of the border, which we are not being able to because we have to watch our back from eastern side (towards India). That is not a healthy situation to be in,” Qureshi said in response to a question at the US Institute of Peace, a US Congress-funded top American think-tank.

“Now can you (United States) facilitate? The answer from them is no. They wanted (it done) bilaterally. But there is no bilateral movement,” Qureshi said. He went on to warn that this could lead to an escalation of tension between the two countries.

“If that lack of facilitation leads to escalation and some of the statements that have come out of late have not been very helpful,” the Pakistani foreign minister said in an apparent reference to the remarks by Indian leaders; “the so-called surgical strikes and stuff like that doesn’t make sense. It does not, that’s politics.. there are elections around the corner,” he claimed in response to a question.

Imran Khan’s new government in Pakistan, he claimed, is not shy of engaging.

Referring to the cancelling of his meeting with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New York, he alleged that India backed off. However, he quickly evaded India’s reasons for this – glorification of terrorists by issuing postal stamps and brutal killing of India’s security personnel by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

“If the Indians have a better option, share it with us. If disengagement, if not talking to each other will resolve and stabilise the region, fine. If that’s their analysis fine,” a hassled Qureshi said.

Qureshi who left for Pakistan after his meetings with Trump administration officials said it is unfortunate that the two countries are not engaging. “It’s unfortunate. That’s the way it is. Now. What does this government want? We want normalisation. We want co-existence. You’ve got to recognise the reality. Pakistan is a reality. So is India. We have issues. How do we resolve them?” he asked.

After coming to power, the first speech made by the Prime Minister Khan was “that every step you (India) take towards peace, we will take two. And he meant it. It wasn’t just because it sounded good. It wasn’t to please anyone. He is too blunt a person to please people. He can be very straight and he can be very blunt. But he said that because he feels that way,” Qureshi claimed.

India has highlighted how Pakistan created the conditions for cancellation of the meeting in New York – due to Pakistan issuing postage stamps glorifying terrorists and the brutal killing of three of its security personnel by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

The Pakistan foreign minister did not mention that in his answer and only said that the stalled dialogue process is not good for the two countries and the region.

Responding to a question on India’s stand that talks and terrorism cannot go together, a view which is shared by Washington too, Qureshi referred to a statement by Imran Khan while he was an opposition leader and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to New Delhi that “there would always be spoilers.”

“There will always be spoilers. There will always be elements that will scuttle the process of peace. But when they do that, let us re-engage to fight them. They will push us back. But we have to see what is in our interest, what is in the regional interest. What’s in Pakistan’s interest,” Qureshi said quoting what Imran Khan had told Prime Minister Modi.

BP, diabetes in pregnancy may up hot flashes later

October 4, 2018 by Nasheman

New York, Oct 4 Women with high blood pressure and gestational diabetes during pregnancy are likely to experience more hot flashes during their menopause, a new study reports.

According to researchers, an estimated 60 to 80 per cent of women experience hot flashes as part of menopause.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes may be modestly associated with a greater number of hot flashes.

It could be because of the cholesterol-lowering and diabetes medications, the findings revealed.

In contrast, women who had never been pregnant experienced fewer hot flashes.

“Women with a history of these pregnancy disorders were heavier and more likely to be taking lipid-lowering medications and diabetes medications,” said lead researcher, Rhoda Conant, from the University of Oklahoma in the US.

In the study, published in the journal Menopause, the team examined data on more than 2,200 women.

“With so many women affected by hot flashes, healthcare providers need to understand all the underlying risk factors that could influence hot flashes at the time of menopause,” said JoAnn Pinkerton, Executive Director from The North American Menopause Society in the US.
