Modi government pursuing anti-people policies: Opposition leaders

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Opposition leaders on Monday accused the Modi government of pursuing “anti-people policies” and cheating the people on various issues, besides remaining silent on the rising prices of fuel and other essential items.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar accused the NDA regime of betraying the people through fuel price hikes and said that a beginning had been made to oust the “anti-people” Modi government in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a joint opposition protest rally at the Ramlila Maidan here against petrol and diesel price hikes, Pawar said that power had gone into the wrong hands, and parties opposed to the government have to work together to remove it.

“We have to bring about a change. If a change has to be brought, all political parties who work to protect the interests of people have to make joint efforts to remove this anti-people government. If we are ready to proceed on this path, we will get the support of people… power has gone into wrong hands and we will rid the country of it,” the former Union Minister said.

He said that a beginning has been made with Monday’s protest called by the Congress and supported by nearly 20 political parties.

Without naming the BJP, Pawar said that people running the government for the past four years had assured that prices of commodities of daily use will be kept under check but steps that should have been taken were not taken.

Pawar took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his speech at the BJP National Executive meet on Sunday. “He talked of his government’s bravery, but this bravery is in pulling down the rupee, this bravery is in raising fuel prices, this bravery is in raising cooking gas prices.”

The former Union Minister also countered the BJP charge that nothing happened in the last many decades, and said such allegations were quite strange.

“Then Leader of the Opposition Atal Bihari Vajpayee told Parliament that such remarks were an insult to farmers who had made India self-dependent in food grains, an insult to labourers who worked to increase industrial production and export…”

He also took a dig at the BJP vis-a-vis commemorating Vajpayee, saying the BJP veteran was not remembered when he was alive. Instead of taking his name now daily, BJP leaders should follow his message if they wanted to pay him real tributes.

In his remarks, Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy accused the Modi government of “cheating people on every issue.”

Revolutionary Socialist Party Member of Parliament N.K. Premachandran said that protests by various political outfits was an indication that the entire country is agitated and protesting against the government’s “anti-people policies”.

Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary said the BJP leaders were silent on issues affecting the people, including fuel prices and unemployment.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren said that the government had “looted” about Rs 10 lakh crore from the poor, farmers, labourers and the middle class through increased prices of petroleum products.

“The Prime Minister calls himself a fakir (acetic). I am surprised. We have seen plunderers loot the country, but it is for the first time that a ‘fakir’ is looting the country,” he said.

Streets deserted in Bengaluru, shops attacked in Mangalore

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Daily life was thrown out of gear across Karnataka after Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and their allies called for a Bharat Bandh on Monday, to protest against the rise in fuel prices.

In Bangalore, schools, education institutes and several offices were shut. Many corporates asked their employees to work from home and avoid travelling. Local buses, taxis and autorickshaws stayed off the roads, giving a deserted look to the city. Business establishments, shops, malls, also remained closed.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses kept off the road across the state.

Hundreds of workers from Congress, JD(S), Left parties and other outfits came on the streets, raising slogans,

Organisations such as Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, BMTC, Ola and Uber and taxi associations, uto Drivers’ Association have lent their support to the bandh.

In Mangaluru, incidents of stone pelting at hotels and shops, which remained open, were reported.

The shutdown was also reported from in many other parts of the state including Tumakuru, Ramanagar, Mandya, Channapatna, Hassan, Mangaluru, Chamarajnagar, Mysuru. Hubballi, Bidar and Kolar.

Condemning the attack, BJP Karnataka chief B S Yeddyurappa said, “It’s an ill-intended bandh to trouble the common man and mislead them. This bandh is benefiting only the extortionists. People know what’s happening. Nowhere in the country, it’s successful except for Karnataka because it’s a conspiracy of the Congress and JD(S),” Yeddyurappa said.

As a precautionary measure, state chief minister HD Kumaraswamy declared a public holiday for schools and colleges in Bengaluru on Monday.

A country-wide bandh has been called by the Opposition over the fuel price rise. Price of both – already having set records earlier this year – rose for almost all of last week and petrol even breached the Rs 80/litre mark in the national capital.

India launches new digital bridge with Africa

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

As part of India’s reachout to Africa, the External Affairs Ministry on Monday signed an agreement with the Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd. (TCIL) to establish a pan-African e-network between the two nations.

“This project, called the e-VidyaBharati and e-ArogyaBharati Network Project, will serve as yet another bridge – a digital bridge – between our countries, shrinking the distance between India and Africa even more,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said at the signing ceremony.

She said that the the Project “is a clear effort by India to reach out to Africa in the critical areas of education and health”.

“This e-network aims at providing quality tele-education and tele-medicine facility by linking select Indian Universities, Institutions and Super Specialty Hospitals to African educational institutions and hospitals,” the Minister said.

Stating that the earlier avatar of this project was operated on satellite-based technology and covered 48 African countries, Sushma Swaraj said that it has now been decided to establish two separate web-based portals – one each for tele-education and tele-medicine.

“This would significantly increase the ease of access for students, doctors etc. who are the intended beneficiaries of this project,” she said.

Reiterating the importance of Africa in India’s foreign policy priorities, the External Affairs Minister pointed out that in the last four years, there have been 26 visits to African countries at the level of President, Vice President and Prime Minister apart from several other Ministerial visits.

“It has been decided to significantly enhance our diplomatic presence in Africa with the opening of 18 new resident missions over the coming four years,” she said.

She also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 10 guiding principles of India’s engagement with Africa during his address to the Ugandan parliament in July and said: “Our development partnership will be guided by African priorities, so that it liberates African potential and not constrain their future.

“We will rely on African talent and skills and build local capacity and create local opportunities. We will keep our markets open and make it attractive to trade with India.”

Sushma Swaraj also said that the Indian industry will be supported for investing in Africa.

India is also a leading development aid partner of African countries and this includes implementation of 180 lines of credit worth about $11 billion in over 40 African countries.

Interpol issues red corner notice against Nirav’s sister

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Interpol has issued a red corner notice (RCN) against Purvi Deepak Modi, sister of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi who is wanted in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, officials said on Monday.

According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) the Interpol issued the RCN against Purvi Modi on the charge of money laundering, as requested by it.

In August, a special court in Mumbai had issued public summons to Nirav Modi’s sister Purvi and brother Neeshal, who are Belgian citizens, to appear before it on September 25. The court also said that if they fail to appear then their properties would be confiscated under the newly enacted fugitive offenders act.

According to ED officials, Purvi Modi and other family members of Nirav Modi were the recipients of the proceeds of the crime.

Last week, Interpol issued a RCN against Nirav Modi’s close aide Mihir Bhansali in connection with the case.

Bhansali, who was an executive in Nirav Modi’s Firestar International firm, is absconding since the probe started in the alleged $2 billion PNB fraud case.

The RCN is issued to seek the location and arrest of wanted person(s) with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.

The ED wants to question Purvi Modi and Bhansali to unearth further details of the fraud committed by Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi of the Gitanjali group to cheat the Mumbai-based PNB’s Brady House branch.

The Interpol, in its notice, requested its 192 member countries to arrest or detain Bhansali so that his extradition process could begin.

The Interpol has issued a similar notice against Nirav Modi, who as well as his family and uncle Choksi left the country in January, a month before the fraud came to light.

The notice mentions Bhansali’s birth place Mumbai and gives his date of birth as November 15, 1977.

Purvi Modi’s photo is also pasted on the notice.

Bharat Bandh affects normal life in Tripura

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

A nationwide shutdown or Bharat Bandh called by the opposition Congress, Left and other parties against the increasing prices of fuel affected normal life in the BJP-ruled Tripura on Monday.

Most markets, shops and business establishments were closed and private and passenger vehicles remained off the roads. Government offices and some banks were open but employee attendance was low.

Flights operated to-and-from Agartala while the Northeast Frontier Railways operated their trains with very few passengers.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) K.V. Sreejesh told IANS that there were no untoward incidents reported from any part of the state.

The Congress and Left parties maintained that the shutdown was total and successful while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that the people rejected the Bharat Bandh in Tripura.

Several Congress party workers were arrested for holding demonstrations in different places and creating obstacles in front of government offices.

Manipur Lok Sabha member Thokchom Meinya along with two party leaders from Assam, Wajed Ali Choudhury and Abdur Rauf, were also arrested here.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Lok Sabha member from Tripura Sankar Prasad Dutta told the media that braving the threat of ruling BJP and the state government, the state’s people unitedly observed the shutdown to protest against the rising prices of transport fuel and essentials.

The ruling BJP, however, claimed that the “people outrightly rejected the ‘Bharat Bandh’ as it did not serve their interest”.

“Normal works were done in government offices and in most places in Tripura. Ongoing process of panchayat elections was also carried out all over Tripura. As plying of vehicles was little less, government employees and other workers went to their places of work with their own arrangements,” BJP General Secretary Pratima Bhowmik told IANS.

“As a national party, BJP’s policy is always against any shut down as the party gives top priority to development and peace besides the interest of the common and poor people. Any kind of ‘bandh’ or strike affected the development and interest of the people.”

Strike remains mostly ineffective in West Bengal

September 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The nationwide six-hour strike called by the Congress and the Left Front sponsored 12-hour general strike in West Bengal evoked a lukewarm response on Monday as people came out in numbers on the streets while public transport was available in the city and suburbs amid tight security arrangements.

The Congress and its allies called the strike from 9 a.m. against the rising prices of petrol and diesel along with the depreciating rupee, the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist)-led Left Front too called the strike starting from 6 a.m. on the same issue.

However, it was business as usual in the city and suburbs where thousands of office goers hit the streets as the day progressed. The districts also remained largely active barring stray incidents in some places like Howrah district’s Dasnagar industrial area where the strike supporters tried to put up road blockades and clashed with the police.

Banks, educational institutions including schools and colleges mostly remained open while trading activities at Burrabazar in the city were more or less normal.

According to a state official, the attendance at the state secretariat Nabanna was over 95 per cent and overall attendance in state government offices was 97 per cent.

Train services in Eastern and South-Eastern Railways were largely normal though the Left Front supporters tried to block the rail tracks in Hooghly district’s Sreerampore, Kolkata’s Jadavpur station and Sealdah division’s Lakshmikantapur lines.

Additional police personnel have been deployed throughout the state to prevent any disruption or violence in connection with the strike. However, the Left Front and the Congress took out rallies in some places in support of the strike.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state supported the issues on which the shut down has been called, but opposed the strike in the state in line with the party’s stated policy against any kind of strikes.

State Minister and Trinamool’s Secretary General Partha Chatterjee had said that the government would take all measures to maintain public utility services.

State-run transport corporations are running more buses than usual to ensure that commuters are not inconvenienced, a state official said.

A special arrangement has been made with a nationalised insurance company to extend insurance benefits of up to Rs 75,000 to the owner of any vehicle, damaged by miscreants on Monday, a state official said.

The owner of the vehicle would have to file a complaint within 12 hours of the incident and will be reimbursed within 72 hours, the officer added.
