India taking its rightful place as leading global power: US

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Greeting India on its 72nd Independence Day, US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo on Wednesday said a “fellow democracy and a friend” was taking its rightful place as a leading global power with its democratic values and inclusiveness.

“On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I extend my best wishes to the people and government of India on their Independence Day. Since gaining its independence 71 years ago today, India has set an example for South Asia and the world by supporting democracy, diversity, and the rule of law-values shared by the US,” Pompeo said in a statement.

“As members of the oldest and largest democracies, the people of the US and India have always enjoyed strong bonds of friendship. We are grateful for the vibrant Indian-American diaspora and the growing number of young people strengthening ties between our countries as exchange students.”

He said the values shared by the two countries contribute to inspiring collaboration in health, energy, environment, science, and high technology that will fuel the jobs and prosperity of the future.

“On this Indian Independence Day, we congratulate India – a unique civilization, fellow democracy, and a friend – on taking its rightful place as a leading global power and continuing our shared efforts to sustain the rules-based order.”

Cycle expedition to focus attention on polluted Yamuna

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Pramod Kumar Katara began his ‘cycle yatra’ early on Wednesday from the iconic Taj Mahal to India Gate in New Delhi to focus attention on the polluted Yamuna river.

“This time it is not just for a record but to draw the attention of the government to the polluted Yamuna. If the Taj is to be protected for posterity, Yamuna will have to be saved too,” the 53-year-old said.

The record for long distance cycling with the national tricolour is for the Limca Book of Records, he added.

“Already I have 21 records in my name, from Swiss ball balancing to yoga, but this one is going to be special for Yamuna,” Katara said.

Katara said he hoped to reach India Gate, a World War I monument in the heart of Delhi, by Wednesday evening via the Yamuna Expressway, covering the distance in around 12 hours.

Members of the River Connect Campaign collected at the Mehtab bagh to cheer Katara.

300 priests accused of abusing thousands of children in US

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Internal documents from six Catholic dioceses in the US state of Pennsylvania showed that over 300 “predator priests” have been credibly accused of sexually abusing thousands of children, according to a grand jury report.

“We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands,” CNN quoted the report as saying on Tuesday.

“Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted.”

The lengthy report investigates clergy sexual abuse dating back to 1947 in six dioceses: Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Scranton.

According to the report, the accused priests victimised boys, girls, teens and pre-pubescent children.

Some victims were plied with alcohol and groped or molested while others were raped.

“There have been other reports about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church. But never on this scale,” the grand jurors wrote in Tuesday’s report.

At a news conference announcing the report’s release, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro called it the “largest, most comprehensive report into child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church ever produced in the US”.

The report comes as the Catholic Church, including Pope Francis, is struggling to contain a sexual abuse scandal rapidly consuming the church on several continents.

In Australia, a bishop has been found guilty of covering up sexual abuse.

In Chile, the Pope was forced to recant his dismissal of an abuse scandal involving a prominent priest and bishops accused of covering up his crimes.

Karnataka’s final award of the Mahadayi Tribunal dispute: HDK

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka would study the final award of the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal, which on Tuesday recommended 13.42 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of the river water to the state before deciding on its next move, said an official statement here.

“We will respond to the final award of the Tribunal after a detailed study of its recommendations to the Union government. An appropriate decision will be taken after studying the award in 12 volumes and consulting with the concerned,” Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy said in a statement here.

The three-member Tribunal awarded 13.42 TMC of the river water to Karnataka as against its demand for 36.66 TMC, said an earlier statement.

“I have discussed the ruling with the state water resources department and legal experts,” added the Chief Minister.

One of the counsels who represented Karnataka before the Tribunal, Mohan Kataraki, said the immediate water needs of the state’s drought-prone districts Bagalkote, Belagavi, Dharwad and Gadag, have been addressed by the award.

“While the immediate water requirement has been met by the Tribunal’s award, we will take steps for any additional water requirement after going through the verdict,” Kataraki told reporters in New Delhi.

Congress state unit President Dinesh Gundu Rao said the party is partially satisfied with the award.

“We are partially satisfied with the Tribunal’s verdict as the award for Karnataka is less than the water we had demanded,” Rao told reporters here.

Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President B.S. Yeddyurappa, however, hailed the award as “historic”.

“We are happy with what has been awarded to the state and welcome the Tribunal’s decision,” Yeddyurappa said.

Heavy rains again hit Kerala on Wednesday killing four more people and taking the death toll to 43 since August 8.

It has been raining heavily in several parts of the state since Tuesday evening. The authorities were forced to open 33 dams across Kerala.

A person died in a Munnar lodge as it crashed. A 70-year-old woman in Ranni near Pathanamthitta was electrocuted as her house was submerged.

The Idukki dam floodgates were reopened late on Tuesday as the water level in the Periyar river and its tributaries flowing through Ernakulam and Thrissur districts rose menacingly.

Following flooding in and around the Cochin International Airport, all flights were canceled till 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Met has forecast more rains till Saturday.

Authorities are maintaining a close vigil especially in Idukki district as the shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam were also opened at 2.35 a.m. after its water-level crossed 140 feet.

People living in and around the dam were evacuated late on Tuesday.

Leaves of all revenue department officials have been canceled, authorities said.

All is not well between father and son

August 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Two recent statements made by JDS national president HD Deve Gowda and Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy have raised questions whether all is not well in the first family of the state’s ruling party.

According to the sources, HDD is keen to field Prajwal Revanna from Hassan constituency in the upcoming Loksabha election. He has made his intention clear in this regard. With this, Gowda is likely to contest from the Mandya, which is another strong belt of the JDS.

But HDK is not keen on fielding Prajwal, it is said. When he was questioned about the same in Haradanahalli in Hassan he informed that Prajwal will be fielded only if such a scenario emerges. Adding to this HDD in Hassan announced that HDK will move to national politics if any crisis emerges. But HDK refuted the statement and made it clear that he will never move to the national politics.

According to the sources in the party, HDD is under pressure from daughter-in-law Bhavani Revanna on lack of political representation to her husband and son. “She is pressurizing the senior Gowda to field Prajwal from Hassan. But HDK is against it,” said sources.
