GST to be launched at stroke of 30 June midnight, says Arun Jaitley

June 20, 2017 by Nasheman

gst

New Delhi: Reminiscent of India’s tryst with destiny at the midnight of 15 August 1947, Parliament’s historic Central Hall will host a function on the intervening night of 30 June-1 July to ring in the nation’s biggest tax reform—the goods and services tax (GST).

Announcing that the switchover to the GST will kick in at the stroke of midnight, finance minister Arun Jaitley said the hour-long function will mirror the contribution made by different political parties and states to the revolutionary new tax regime. The circular-shaped Central Hall had previously hosted a function that marked 50 years of Independence.

President Pranab Mukherjee, who had piloted the first Constitutional Amendment Bill to bring in GST in 2011 when he was finance minister with the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime, will share the dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion. Also on dais will be former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and H.D. Deve Gowda, apart from vice-president Hamid Ansari and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

All Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament have been invited as also chief ministers and state finance ministers, Jaitley said, adding that all the members—past and present—chairmen of the GST Council and the Empowered Committee of state finance ministers have been invited.

GST, he said, over the medium to long term will lead to a rise in revenues of the Centre and states as the size of the formal economy will grow. GST being a more efficient system will also result in better tax compliance, the finance minister stressed.

However, in the short term, “there will be some challenges” in switchover to GST, he pointed out without elaborating. Asked about industry bodies talking about small and medium enterprises not being prepared for the switchover to GST, Jaitley said 1 July as the rollout date has been announced well in advance and so “nobody had any business not to be ready”.

Besides, additional time has been given in the initial period for filing of the results, thus giving enough time to prepare for the transition, he said. On the anti-profiteering clause in the GST law, he said the provision has been made as a deterrent which is not intended to be used unless forced to.

June 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Jet Airways

New Delhi: He is a born frequent flier — a baby boy, born Sunday 35,000 feet above sea level on a Jet Airways plane from Saudi Arabia to India, has received a free lifetime pass from the airline as his first birthday gift.

Jet Airways flight 9W 569 took off from Dammam for Kochi at 2.55 am Sunday and when an expectant mother from Kerala travelling onboard went into premature labour the crew declared a medical emergency and diverted the flight to Mumbai.

While the Boeing 737 with 162 passengers on board was still over the Arabian Sea, the cabin crew requested on the public announcement system for a doctor to come forward. But since there was none a female nurse travelling to Kerala, named Wilson, volunteered to help deliver the child along with the airline staff.

After the plane landed in Mumbai, both the mother and the baby were rushed to a hospital and were said to be doing well, according to the airline. “Being the first baby to be born in-flight for the airline, Jet Airways is pleased to offer the newly-born a free lifetime pass for all his travel on Jet Airways,” the airline said in a statement.

The plane later resumed its onward journey to Kochi and reached its destination at 12.45 pm after a delay of 90 minutes.

One killed as van hits worshippers near London mosque

June 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Finsbury Park Mosque

London: One person was killed and eight others were injured after a van rammed into a crowd of worshippers near a north London mosque, police said on Monday.

A 48-year-old man was arrested following the collision just after midnight near Finsbury Park Mosque in Seven Sisters Road, reports the BBC.

“The driver of the van was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested…He has been taken to hospital, and will be taken into custody once discharged,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

The statement said no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police.

“Due to the nature of this incident extra policing resources have been deployed in order to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan,” the Guardian quoted the statement as saying.

Prime minister Theresa May condemned the incident and said police are treating it “as a potential terrorist attack”.

“I will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene,” she added.

According to the Muslim Council of Britain, the van “intentionally ploughed into a group of worshippers who were already tending to someone who had been taken ill.”

Harun Khan, the Council’s secretary general said: “It appears from eye witness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia.”

“Over the past weeks and months, Muslims have endured many incidents of Islamophobia, and this is the most violent manifestation to date,” the Guardian quoted Khan as saying.

An eyewitness told the BBC how he jumped out the way of the van as it struck.

“I was shocked. There were bodies around me…Thank God I just moved to the side.”

Another witness who lives in a flat on Seven Sisters Road said she saw people “shouting and screaming”.

“There was this white van stopped outside Finsbury Park Mosque that seems to have hit people who were coming out of the mosque after prayers finished.”

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said on Twitter: “I’m totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park.

“I’ve been in touch with the mosques, police…My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this awful event.”

Finsbury Park is a diverse London suburb situated a few kilometres north of the city centre.

It is home to a wide variety of nationalities and is the centre of London’s Algerian population.

Muslim girl assaulted, killed after leaving US mosque

June 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Nabra Hassanen

Washington: A Muslim girl was found dead a day after she was assaulted near a mosque in the US state of Virginia and a suspect has been arrested, police said.

The victim was identified as 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen of Reston and her body was found in a pond on Sunday, The Washington Post reported.

Fairfax County police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres and charged him with murder.

According to accounts from police and an All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) official, a group of four or five teenagers including Nabra had visited a restaurant to have a late-night meal after prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.

At about 4 a.m., the group was confronted by Torres as they walked on a street.

They ran into a mosque, but one of them, Nabra, was left behind and was later reported as missing, said Deputy Aleksandra Kowalski, a spokeswoman for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.

The police conducted an hour-long search around Dranesville Road and Woodson Drive in Herndon and remains thought to be the girl’s were found about 3 p.m. on Sunday in a pond in Sterling.

During the search, police said they stopped a car being driven in a suspicious manner in the area, and took the driver Torres into custody.

The girl’s mother said detectives told her that Nabra was struck with a metal bat.

“I can’t think of a worse instance to occur than the loss of a 17-year-old on Father’s Day, as the father of a 17-year-old myself,” Loudoun County Sheriff Michael L. Chapman said.

The reason for the attack was still not known, but hate crime was one of the options being investigated, reports said.

“We are devastated and heartbroken as our community undergoes and processes this traumatic event,” Rizwan Jaka, chairman of ADAMS, said in a statement.

Ram Nath Kovind is NDA’s presidential candidate

June 19, 2017 by Nasheman

ram-nath-kovind

New Delhi: Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind has been named as NDA candidate for upcoming presidential poll due to July 17. BJP national president Amit Shah today announced his name after the key party meeting at New Delhi.

The meeting attended by top leaders was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Ram Nath Kovind may file his nomination for president on June 23”, Amit Shah said in the post-meeting statement.

Ram Nath a lawyer by profession hails from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and he belongs to Dalit community.

Who is Ram Nath Kovind?
A chamar leader from rural Kanpur, Ram Nath Kovind was chosen as the NDA’s presidential candidate by the BJP in fitness with its dalit scheme of things ahead of the next parliamentary elections.

By chosing a leader belonging to the most backward among the dalits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi intended to send a strong social message.

Kovind as a NDA choice cannot be easily rejected by the opposition parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal (United) or the Bahujan Samaj Party because of his poor background as well as his track record as a non-controversial BJP politician. His name was announced by BJP chief Amit Shah after a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board on Monday afternoon, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Union ministers who had held parleys with opposition leaders last week.

Two years ago, when he picked Kovind as Bihar governor, Modi had then tweeted that “he has spent his entire life working for the Dalits, the marginalised communities.”

Kovind is known to enjoy good rapport with Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar who may not oppose his candidature. In fact, Kumar was the first non-BJP leader to call on Kovind in Raj Bhavan on Monday soon after Shah announced his candidture.

Soft-spoken Kovind, like BSP founder Kanshi Ram, belongs to the extremely poor section of the dalit community- the chamars who have faced extreme depravation and discrimination in northern India.

Seventy-one year old Kovind is a former BJP national spokesperson, who served as Rajya Sabha MP for two terms. He headed BJP’s SC/ST Morcha (1998 to 2002). Till he became a MP in 1995, Kovind lived in a rented apartment in Delhi’s Kalibari. Known to avoid controversy, he never appeared on television when he was party spokesperson.

Kovind served as a member on following important Parliamentary Committees.

His website as governor of Bihar recalled that Kovind had official orders issued by the Centre in 1997, which adversely affected the interests of employees of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes. Subsequently, Kovind succeeded in getting the orders null and void by the passage of three Amendments in the Constitution of India during the first NDA regime.

During his parliamentary tenure of 12 years, he emphasized on the development of basic infrastructure for education in rural areas by helping in construction of school buildings in Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand under M.P. L.A.D. Scheme.

As a lawyer, Kovind took a leading role in providing free legal aid to the weaker sections of society, specially SC/ST women, needy and the poor under the aegis of “Free Legal Aid Society” in Delhi.

Pakistan beat India to lift Champions Trophy

June 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Pakistan beat India

Pakistan have won the Champions Trophy cricket final after beating their arch-rivals India by 180 runs at the Oval ground in Britain’s capital, London.

Title-holders India, set 339 to win, collapsed after Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir removed the top three batsmen – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and captian Virat Kohli. They were eventually dismissed for 158, with 19.3 overs to spare.

Al Jazeera’s Lee Wellings, reporting from South London, said that only few people saw this result coming.

“This is absolutely remarkable. Pakistan fans cannot believe the journey their team has taken,” he said.

“Pakistan is celebrating their biggest victory against their archrival.”

Amir finished with three for 16 in six overs and Hasan Ali, who kick-started Pakistan’s revival in their group-win over top-ranked South Africa, ended the match when he had Jasprit Bumrah caught by gleeful captain and wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Left-arm fast bowler Amir, whose career was almost ended on the other side of London’s River Thames by a ban and jail term he received for his part in a spot-fixing scam during a 2010 Test against England at Lord’s, finished with three for 16.

He dismissed Rohit Sharma (nought), India captain Virat Kohli (five) and Shikhar Dhawan (21) in a stunning new-ball spell.

Earlier, Pakistan made 338 for four after losing the toss with opener Fakhar Zaman’s 114 his maiden one-day international hundred in just his fourth match at this level.

India had thrashed Pakistani side by 124 runs in their tournament opener at Edgbaston on June 4.

Wounded Pakistan look to overcome India for final glory

June 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Pakistan-India

London: A wounded Pakistan will be out for revenge while India will aim to maintain their dominance when the arch-rivals meet in the final of the Champions Trophy cricket tournament at The Oval here on Sunday.

Pakistan have been badly bruised against India this series in their opening group stage match, having lost the game by 124 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method.

India may be ahead against Pakistan in ICC tournaments by an 8-2 margin, but in all ODI tournament finals Pakistan holds a 6-2 edge in the head-to-head battle against India.

Pakistan have managed to bounce back in this tournament, defeating South Africa and Sri Lanka in the group stages and England in the semi-finals to book a berth in the final.

With Pakistan’s front-line pacer Mohammad Amir declared fit to play in the final after sitting out the previous match, he alongside new ball bowler Junaid Khan will be the key against India to provide their side with early breakthroughs.

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed will also look to use his team’s bowling strength to do the damage against an in-form Indian batting line-up.

The spin duo of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Hafeez alongside medium-pacer Rumman Raees — who made his debut in the semi-finals — will look to provide depth and variation to the Pakistan bowling line-up.

The batting department for Pakistan under the likes of opener Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman followed by Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez will look to flourish against India having got to good starts in the previous matches but failing to build lethal partnerships.

India, on the other side have looked a balanced side with both their batting and bowling departments having managed to click throughout the tournament.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan is the tournament’s leading run scorer with 317 runs in four matches and will look to continue his momentum against Pakistan.

In-form Indian batsmen Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have also helped their side look capable enough of chasing any target.

The bowling department for India under the likes of pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin have looked solid bowling economically while providing clinical breakthroughs.

Captain Kohli will also look to use off-break spinner Kedar Jadhav — who took two vital wickets in his previous match against Bangladesh — alongside Hardik Pandya to deceive the Pakistan batsmen.

Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wicket-keeper), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dinesh Karthik, Mohammed Shami, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav.

Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (captain and wicket-keeper), Ahmed Shehzad, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir, Rumman Raees, Junaid Khan, Imad Wasim, Fahim Ashraf, Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail.

Government announces 149 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras

June 17, 2017 by Nasheman

passport-india

New Delhi: No Indian will have to travel more than 50 km to get their passport, as the government is planning to set up a comprehensive network of Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) across the nation, with major post offices to also provide the service, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Saturday.

The Minister, announcing the openning of 149 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs), said these will be set up in the second phase. In the first phase 86 POPSKs were to be set up — 52 of which are now functional.

Apart from centres in the post offices, the government had earlier also announced 16 full-fledged PSKs taking the total number of new centres to the “auspicious” 251, she said.

“When I started at the Ministry, we had only 77 PSKs to cater to the whole nation. I realised that distance was the biggest hurdle for people to get their passports,” she said.

Even after pushing through 16 more PSKs apart from 86 of them in post offices, Sushma Swaraj said she felt it was not enough.

“We planned to set a target and decided that no individual should have to travel more than 50 km for a passport.”

“With that criterion for selection, today I announce 149 new POPSKs,” she said.

Sushma Swaraj also launched a web portal for the ministry’s flagship “Know India Programme” aimed at connecting the Indian youth living abroad with Indian culture and heritage.

Under the programme, the Indian diaspora would visit the country for a 25-day tour fully funded by the government.
