PM Modi renames Shipping Ministry to ‘Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday rechristened “Ministry of Shipping” to “Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways”.

The announcement was made after Modi inaugurated Ropax ferry services between Surat and Saurashtra in Gujarat, through video conferencing. Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani also attended the event.

This ferry service will reduce the distance between Surat and Saurashtra from 317 km (by road) to just 60 kilometres, informed Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Shipping Minister on Saturday.

A large number of people from Saurashtra have settled in Surat and are working in the diamond industry. There are about 5,000 buses plying daily between this route which takes around 10 to 12 hours, Mandaviya informed.

India’s COVID-19 Update crosses 85-lakh mark with 45,674 fresh cases

NEW DELHI: India recorded 45,674 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, taking the overall cases in the country to 85,07,754, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s data on Sunday.

With 49,082 new discharges in the last 24 hours, the total active cases reached 5,12,665 and the cumulative recoveries are now at 78,68,968. The country’s death toll due to coronavirus surged to 1,26,121 after 559 deaths today.

Maharashtra reported 1,00,068 active cases, 15,69,090 recoveries and 45,115 deaths due to the disease so far while Karnataka recorded 33,339 active cases, 7,99,439 recoveries and 11,369 deaths so far.

The national capital reported 40,258 active cases and 6,912 deaths while 3,83,614 people recovered from the infection till now. Kerala reported 83,377 active cases, 3,95,624 recoveries and the death toll stood at 1,668 on Sunday.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 11,77,36,791 samples have been tested for coronavirus to November 7, of these, 11,94,487 samples were tested yesterday.

India’s Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of COVID-19 has touched 1.48 per cent and the country continues to report one of the lowest mortality rates, as per the MoHFW on Sunday.

The Ministry said that the widespread and comprehensive testing, prompt tracing, quick isolation, and effective treatment of severe patients in ICUs through a standard of care protocol across government and private hospitals have resulted in this outcome.

Delhi records over 7,000 Covid-19 cases for first time government to augment beds

The positivity rate stood at 12.19 per cent amid the festive season and rising pollution in the city, according to the latest bulletin.

NEW DELHI: Delhi recorded over 7,000 COVID-19 cases for the first time taking the tally to over 4.23 lakh on Friday, while the death toll rose to 6,833 with 64 more fatalities, authorities said.

The 7,178 fresh cases were diagnosed following the 58,860 tests conducted the previous day, while the positivity rate stood at 12.19 per cent amid the festive season and rising pollution in the city, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department.

The previous highest single-day spike till date here — 6,842 cases — was recorded on Wednesday.

The number of daily cases had crossed the 6,000-mark for three consecutive days from November 3-5.

On Friday, 64 new fatalities were recorded, pushing the death toll in the national capital to 6,833.

On Thursday, 66 fatalities due to COVID-19 were reported.

The active cases tally on Friday stood at 39,722.

The bulletin said the total number of cases has climbed to 4,23,831.

The recovery rate on Friday was over 89 per cent, it said.

Meanwhile, Delhi government on Friday issued orders to augment the capacity of beds for COVID-19 patients by adding in total over 1,100 beds at various state-run and private facilities to “combat the third wave” of spread of infection.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain took a review meeting with all the medical directors and medical superintendents of COVID-19 hospitals.

Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev took a review meeting with all district magistrates on COVID-19 management, it said.

Additional Chief Secretary (Services) took a meeting with officials of the three municipal corporations and the New Delhi Municipal Council to review the pandemic situation.

The number of Rapid Antigen Tests conducted on Thursday stood at 43,194 while the RT-PCR, CBNAAT and True NAAT tests figures were 15,666 in all adding to 58,860, according to the bulletin The number of containment zones in Delhi increased to 3,754 from 3,684 on Thursday.

The sudden spike in cases comes amid the festive season and rising pollution levels.

While Durga Puja celebrations ended on October 25, the next festivals are Diwali and Chhath in November.

The National Centre for Disease Control in a report drafted recently had warned that Delhi needs to be prepared for about 15,000 fresh cases of COVID-19 per day, taking into account the upcoming winter season-related respiratory problems, large influx of patients from outside and festive gatherings.

According to the Friday bulletin, out of the total number of 15,781 beds in COVID hospitals, 8,253 are vacant.

It said 618 beds in COVID care centres are occupied by persons under quarantine, including travellers who have returned by Vande Bharat Mission and bubble flights.

Delhi government has significantly ramped up testing in the past few days, with the count on several times crossing the 60,000-mark.

The number of tests done per million as on Thursday was over 2.6 lakh while the total number of tests stood at over 49 lakh.

The bulletin said 3,77,276 patients have recovered, been discharged or migrated so far.

Since September, daily cases had begun to rise in the city.

From the last week of September, the daily numbers had started to come down a bit.

The number of people in home isolation rose to 23,679 compared to 23,411 the previous day.

WASHINGTON: The United States has set a third straight daily record for new Covid-19 infections, notching more than 127,000 cases, John Hopkins University reported Friday.

And the death toll as of 8:30 pm over the past 24 hours was 1,149, the Baltimore-based university said.

The outbreak has been surging for weeks across the country, with the Midwest worst-hit even as the number of new diagnoses were approaching springtime levels in the south, northeast and west.

While deaths remain far lower than the peak in spring, Friday was also the fourth day in a row that fatalities were above 1,000. The last time people were dying of Covid-19  at that rate in the US was early September.

As of Friday evening, the US — the worst hit country in the world in terms of deaths and total cases — had more than 236,000 coronavirus-related fatalities and 9.7 million known infections.

Cases are expected to increase as the country moves into colder weather and people switch to socializing primarily indoors, prime conditions for passing the virus from person to person.

Colder, drier weather might also play a role in creating favorable conditions for the virus to linger in air and on surfaces.

Reasons that deaths are down from their peak include the fact that as cases are more spread out geographically than they were at the start of the US epidemic, hospitals are better able to cope with the caseload. 

Doctors have also learned how to better treat severe cases of Covid-19  — by placing patients on their stomachs, avoiding the use of ventilators where possible and using them on low-pressure settings if they are required, and, perhaps most crucially, using steroids such as dexamethasone to tamp down a destructive autoimmune response known as a cytokine storm.

Since a greater proportion of people getting infected are younger, they are also less likely to develop severe forms of the disease.

Two vaccine makers, Moderna and Pfizer, say they might be ready to apply for emergency use authorizations towards the end of the month.

But if and when vaccines do become available, they’re only expected to be moderately effective, meaning that people will need to continue to adhere to masking, social distancing and hand hygiene to bring an end to the pandemic.

Rs 4,636 crore for skill devpt: State, Tata Tech join hands to upgrade ITIs

Tata Technologies Ltd has joined hands with the Karnataka government to develop 150 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by investing over Rs 4,000 crore.

BENGALURU: Tata Technologies Ltd has joined hands with the Karnataka government to develop 150 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by investing over Rs 4,000 crore.  Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa termed the agreement, signed on Friday, as a first-of-its-kind initiative of government-industry partnership that will enable youth to get good quality skill training based on industry requirements. The initiative is part of the government’s continued efforts to ensure ease of doing business, and the agreement is mutually beneficial as the industry will have a skilled workforce. 

As per the agreement, signed by Anand Bhade, president, Tata Technologies, and S Selvakumar, Secretary, Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood, ITIs will be upgraded by investing `4,636.50 crore. Tata Tech and 20 other companies are contributing `4,080 crore from their CSR funds, while `657 crore will be provided by the State government. Each of the 150 ITIs will get `30 crore for upgradation. 

New infrastructure, industry-oriented courseware, training and support for advanced equipment and software to benefit students to get better employment opportunities will be provided at ITIs. Students from other such institutes too can avail of the facilities. While 300 trainers from Tata Tech and associate industries will train students at the upgraded institutes, online training will be provided in all government and aided ITIs in the State. In the first phase, ITIs at Peenya, Hosur Road, Ballari, Mysuru, Dastikoppa and Shikaripura will be upgraded.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said the initiative is expected to help over one lakh youth get better employment opportunities every year. Based on the requirement of the industry, ten new courses are being added at ITIs, he said. Warren Harris, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Tech, said their vision of  ‘Engineering a better world’ is to create a platform for students to be part of the transforming ecosystem and get exposure to the latest machinery, hardware, software and training.  There are 1,713 ITIs in the state. Of them, 270 are government, 196 aided and 1,247 private with 1.8 lakh students.  

Industrious plan 

  • Rs 30 crore each will be invested to upgrade 150 government ITIs: Total investment: `4,636.50cr
  •  ITIs will be developed into skill training hubs with new machinery and technology  
  •  Syllabus will be based on demands of industry
  •  Electric vehicles, agricultural machinery, aerospace and defence, horticulture, smart city and other sectors would be the focus

It’s been more than a week since former mayor R Sampath Raj, accused in the DJ Halli violence case, is absconding after leaving a private hospital in the city.

BENGALURU: It’s been more than a week since former mayor R Sampath Raj, accused in the DJ Halli violence case, is absconding after leaving a private hospital in the city. He has been repeatedly shifting his base, dodging Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths. Special CCB teams have visited places in Kerala and Maharashtra looking for him, but returned empty-handed. Now, they are heading to Andhra Pradesh, sources said. 

Last Saturday, four special teams went to Kerala to nab the former mayor. They had also questioned his relatives to track his movements. On October 29, Sampath Raj escaped from a private hospital in Hebbal, and police searched his house in Cox Town soon after. A CCB officer said a technical team is working on tracking his movements, which showed him moving from one state to another. 

Meanwhile, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai spoke to reporters on Friday, saying that the special teams have clues about Sampath Raj’s whereabouts, and he will be arrested soon.Raj allegedly planned his escape from the city on October 26 along with his former driver, and they hired a cab for this. He was admitted to a private hospital, but absconded soon after his discharge. Meanwhile, the CCB issued a notice to the hospital for not informing them about the discharge.

Fed up with bad roads, Karnataka villagers take NHAI engineer for a ride on tractor

The engineer was made to sit on a tractor and taken for a ride for 2 km on Thursday. The incident happened near Dodduru when some villagers staged a protest to fix the road.

GADAG: Angry villagers of Dodduru and nearby villages took an Engineer from the National Highway Authority on a tractor to show the pathetic condition of Lakshmeshwar and Dodduru road. 

The engineer was made to sit on a tractor and taken for a ride for 2 km on Thursday. The incident happened near Dodduru when some villagers staged a protest to fix the road.

Rajesh Patil, AEE of National Highway Authority visited the spot to convince the villagers but villagers asked him to travel on that road to know the exact situation. Lakshmeshwar to Doddur is a road which was repaired a month back but the villagers are complaining that the contractor has not done his work properly. 

The main road from Lakshemwar to Doddur is one of the busiest roads in the taluk. Farmers go to their fields on carts, villagers go to market on  auto rickshaws.

This road has also witnessed many minor accidents and last week a cart’s wheel stuck in a muddy road and one cattle’s leg was broken. After these incidents many villagers submitted memorandum to the concerned officials but it was in vain. 

Rajesh Patil, engineer who saw the road on a tractor said, “I have seen the pathetic condition of the road. This is all due to the contractor’s mistake. The road repair work will start after Deepavali”.
