AIMIM colluding with BJP, will have little impact on polls: Congress’ Bihar chief

November 7, 2020 by Nasheman

The Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee chief also said the Tejashwi Yadav-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ will get a clear majority in the polls and the Congress will “definitely” do better.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi

NEW DELHI: Dubbing the AIMIM as the BJP’s “B-team”, Congress’ Bihar unit chief Madan Mohan Jha on Thursday accused the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party of colluding with the BJP, but said it will not have any significant impact on the assembly polls as people will not “waste” their votes.

The Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee chief also said the Tejashwi Yadav-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ will get a clear majority in the polls and the Congress will “definitely” do better in terms of winning percentage on the seats contested as compared with the 2015 polls.

Jha said the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) will not be able to cut into the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ vote share as its voters will vote intelligently and not let even one vote go waste.

The assertion assumes significance as it comes ahead of Bihar Assembly elections’ third phase which is set to see a triangular contest with the AIMIM entering the poll dynamics on many seats in the Seemanchal belt, which has a substantial Muslim population, to challenge the National Democratic Alliance and the RJD-led grand alliance.

The AIMIM is in the fray on 20 seats in Bihar polls, a majority of which go to polls in the third phase on November 7, as part of the Grand Democratic Secular Front that has four other parties, including Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samta Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Asked if the Owaisi-led AIMIM can cut into the Mahagathbandhan vote and affect its poll prospects in the third phase, Jha said, “The person you are talking about, the voters you are saying he could impact are very intelligent. They will not waste even a single vote. All voters will cast their vote intelligently.”

“Yes, in one or two seats his strong candidates could have an impact, but the voters in general will not be swayed. I am confident the voters will not make a wrong decision,” the Congress leader said.

On the assertions that Owaisi and his allies could be “vote cutters”, Jha said every one knows whose team they are and from where they are guided.

The state from which Owaisi comes, he is not strengthening his party there but is giving tension to people in other states, Jha said.

The AIMIM had won a seat in the bypolls, but this is an assembly election and voters vote very carefully and intelligently in these polls, he asserted.

Jha said Owaisi’s party was “definitely” BJP’s ‘B-team’.

“They are colluding with the BJP and look at their candidates, they give tickets as per the BJP’s wishes,” he said.

Asked if he believes that Owaisi’s alliance partners were also the BJP’s ‘B-team’, Jha said look at the stance taken by those who are with Owaisi and one would know the answer.

He said his statement that AIMIM and its allies were the ‘B-team’ of the BJP was based on what people of Seemanchal told him when he toured the area recently and he was just conveying their sentiments.

Jha said the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ had done really well in the two phases of the polls gone by and the trend has shown that a grand alliance government is going to be formed under the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav.

The Bihar Congress chief said he does not want to exactly predict any numbers, but was confident that the grand alliance will get a clear majority.

“Great enthusiasm was visible among the people at the four public meetings held by Rahul Gandhi in the last two days. Even the public meetings of Tejashwi ji, they are much bigger than the public meetings of the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and the Chief Minister (Nitish Kumar),” Jha said.

Asked if the grand alliance government comes to power will the Congress get the post of deputy CM, Jha said he does not want to comment on it as this was not an issue that is relevant right now.

On Prime Minister Modi’s sharp attacks at the grand alliance, Jha claimed that the people of Bihar were “not taking his remarks seriously” and alleged that he was making statements not befitting of the prime minister’s post.

Jha also said that the alliance between the BJP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) was an opportunistic one and therefore, the bitterness between them was visible from time to time.

Asked about Lok Janshakti Party chief Chirag Paswan and the impact he would have on the polls, Jha said some LJP candidates were having an impact in some constituencies, but whether he would have a role post polls, the people of Bihar will decide.

On whether the Mahagathbandhan would be open to an alliance with Paswan post polls, he said, “We will get a majority on our own and will not have to join hands with anyone.”

Polling in 71 and 94 constituencies, out of the 243 Assembly seats, was held in the first two phases on October 28 and November 3 respectively.

The remaining 78 seats will go to polls on November 7 and the counting of votes will take place on November 10.

Time to remove Kohli from RCB captaincy, feels Gautam Gambhir

November 7, 2020 by Nasheman

Time to remove Kohli from RCB captaincy, feels Gautam Gambhir

New Delhi: Former India opener and two-time IPL champion skipper Gautam Gambhir feels Virat Kohli’s non-performance as Royal Challengers Bangalore captain should lead to his removal from the hot seat as it is now a question of accountability.

Known for his straight-talking, the hero of India’s two World title triumphs made it clear that Kohli’s name as a leader shouldn’t be taken alongside the likes of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who are IPL’s most successful captains.

Asked if Kohli should be removed from RCB’s captaincy, Gambhir told ‘ESPNCricinfo’, “100 per cent, because the problem is about accountability. Eight years into the tournament (without a trophy), eight years is a long time.

“Tell me any other captain forget about captain, tell me any other player who would have got eight years and wouldn’t have won the title and would have still continued with it.

“So it has to be accountability,” Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, said on the show ‘Time Out’.

Gambhir has been a staunch critic of Kohli’s IPL leadership over the years but he insisted that there is nothing personal.

“…but somewhere down the line, he needs to put his hand up and say, ‘yes, I am responsible. I am accountable’.”

Gambhir then cited the example of Kings XI Punjab, who didn’t show patience with Ravichandran Ashwin after the veteran off-spinner failed to deliver as captain for just two seasons.

“Eight years is a long, long time. Look at what happened to R Ashwin. Two years of captaincy (for the Kings XI Punjab), he couldn’t deliver and he was removed.”

For someone like Rohit, who is on the cusp of his fifth title, a long stint as Mumbai Indians captain has been only possible because he has delivered, said Gambhir.

“We talk about MS Dhoni, we talk about Rohit Sharma, we talk about Virat Kohli…not at all. Dhoni has won three (IPL) titles, Rohit Sharma has won four titles, and that’s the reason they’ve captained for such a long time because they’ve delivered.

“I’m sure if Rohit Sharma wouldn’t have delivered for eight years, he would have been removed as well. There should not be different yardsticks for different people.”

Gambhir said it irksome to see Kohli’s reluctance to accept that the buck stops at him.

“You’re the leader, you’re the captain. When you get the credit, you should take the criticism as well.” He even went to the extent of saying that RCB did not deserve to qualify for the play-offs after four successive losses.

“You can keep saying ‘we qualified for the playoffs and we deserved to qualify for the playoffs’, absolutely not. RCB actually never deserved to qualify for the playoffs.”

Gambhir said RCB has increasingly become a side about only two people — Kohli and AB de Villiers.

“And then they should have had a squad, probably if Virat wanted to open, they should have picked a middle-order batter in the auction. But again it was all about Virat and AB (de Villiers).”

It was only de Villiers who came up some match-winning performances to prevent RCB’s season from becoming a total disaster.

“Imagine if AB would have had a bad season, tell me what would have happened to RCB,” Gambhir said.

“He was the one who actually won them two or three games out of seven. I don’t think as a unit they’ve done anything different from what they did last year. It’s exactly the same this year as well.

“Only because you’ve qualified for the playoffs, just because of one individual’s absolute brilliance, it doesn’t make you a strong contender to win the IPL.”

Biden should not ‘wrongfully’ claim President’s office: Trump

November 7, 2020 by Nasheman

Biden should not 'wrongfully' claim President's office: Trump

Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned his Democratic challenger Joe Biden against “wrongfully” claiming the presidency.

“Joe Biden should not wrongfully claim the office of the President. I could make that claim also. Legal proceedings are just now beginning! Trump said in a tweet Friday.

As the counting of votes in key battleground states continued, Trump did not make a public appearance but remained active on Twitter.

As per the latest projections, Biden has 264 electoral college votes and Trump trails behind with 213. Biden, 77, was leading in four of the five key battleground states where counting of ballots was still going on. Trump was trailing behind Biden in Arizona (by 38,455 votes), Georgia (4,224), Nevada (22,657) and Pennsylvania (19,500) but leading in North Carolina with 76,587 votes.

To be declared the winner of the US election, either of the two candidates needs at least 270 of the 538 electoral college votes.

Trump has challenged the authenticity of the elections, alleging massive voters fraud and electoral malpractice. In another tweet, he said his leads in all of these states were significant on election night but suddenly started vanishing. He asserted that the lead would come back once the legal proceedings move forward.

“I had such a big lead in all of these states late into election night, only to see the leads miraculously disappear as the days went by. Perhaps these leads will return as our legal proceedings move forward! Trump said.

Earlier in the day, he said that “with the attack by the Radical Left Dems on the Republican Senate, the Presidency becomes even more important!”.

Biden, who was expected to make an address to the nation in primetime, did not tweet or make a public statement on Friday. There were no public remarks either from his running mate Senator Kamala Harris.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday called Biden president-elect.

“President-Elect Biden has a strong mandate to lead, and he’ll have a strong Democratic House with him and many Democrats in the Senate. This has been a life or death fight for the fate of our democracy, as he says, the soul of our country.’ We did not win every battle in the House, but we did win the war, she said.

Pelosi said Biden is a unifier. She said, He is determined to bring people together because he respects all points of view. And as he has said, I ran as a Democrat; I’ll govern as President for all of the people, whether they voted for me or not.'”

It is clear that the Biden-Harris ticket will win the White House. His election is historic, propelled by the biggest vote ever in the history of our country, 73.8 million and counting Americans, the most votes ever received by any presidential ticket in history, Pelosi said.

Maharashtra govt. permits private buses to operate with full capacity.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Friday allowed private buses to operate with full capacity ahead of the Diwali holidays and issued an SOP to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.

The state government has directed private bus owners not to allow passengers without masks to board their vehicles and keep sanitizers at the entrance of buses along with extra masks.

Every passenger will be screened with a thermal gun before boarding, and those with fever, cough, and cold will not be permitted to travel.

Drivers should ensure that proper social distancing is maintained among passengers while boarding and alighting from buses, the SOP stated.

Buses should be disinfected at the end of each journey and even reservation offices should be cleaned and sanitized, it was stated.

As per the guidelines, permit holders of buses will have to maintain proper records of the disinfection of their buses.

The state government has also warned action against permit holders under the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989, and Disaster Management Act 2005, in case the SOP is violated.

Private operators have been seeking to ply buses with full capacity, especially after the state government permitted the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to so.

Delhi Police books YouTuber accused of cheating 'Baba Ka Dhaba' owner

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Friday registered a case against YouTuber Gaurav Wasan for allegedly misappropriating funds received as a donation for the owner of Baba Ka Dhaba’, an eatery in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar.

Kanta Prasad (80), the owner of the eatery, had shot to fame after a video of him tearfully recounting the desperation of the months since the lockdown was shot by Wasan and shared widely across social media platforms recently.

The case was registered against the YouTuber following a complaint lodged by Prasad on October 31, nearly a month after the video went viral.

In his complaint to police, Prasad alleged that Wasan “intentionally and deliberately shared only his and his family/friends bank details and mobile numbers with the donors and collected a huge amount of donation… without providing any information to the complainant”.

Wasan, however, denied the allegations.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said, “After we received a complaint, a preliminary enquiry was done and an FIR was registered under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of Indian Penal Code and an investigation has been initiated.”

Earlier in the day, Prasad said he was hurt over being called “greedy” by some people on the social media after he lodged a complaint against Wasan and challenged the YouTuber to disclose his bank details to prove his innocence.

Talking to reporters at a press conference, Prasad, accompanied by his lawyer Prem Joshi and blogger Tushant, claimed that Wasan gave him a cheque of 2.33 lakh on October 26 after the YouTuber was trolled for not handing over the donation amount to Prasad.

Tushant alleged that Wasan has only disclosed his bank account statements from October 7 to 10 whereas he received more money after that. He demanded that Wasan must reveal his bank account statements till October 26.

Joshi highlighted that in the initial videos shared by Wasan, he had claimed that Prasad did not have a bank account or a mobile phone but that was a “lie”.

Joshi also claimed that on October 26, when Wasan gave the cheque to Prasad, he made him sign a paper claiming that all dues had been settled. However, later he again gave Rs 1.45 lakh to Prasad.

Wasan, however, said that he has submitted to the police his bank account statements till November 2 and maintained that he gave all the amount received as a donation for Prasad to him.

COVID-19 Update 575 students, 829 teachers infected as schools reopen in Andhra Pradesh

November 7, 2020 by Nasheman

Classes resumed for class 9 and 10 and intermediate (second year) three days ago across the State following physical distancing norms.

VIJAYAWADA: As many as 829 teachers and 575 students, all from government high schools, have tested positive for Covid-19 in the State after the schools reopened on November 2. Classes resumed for ninth and 10th and second year Intermediate students three days ago, adhering to Covid-19 norms.

According to the statistics provided by the School Education Department, a total of 70,790 out of the total 1.89 lakh government teachers were tested for Covid-19. Of them, 1.17 per cent — 829 — teachers tested positive for the virus. While the highest number of 172 teachers tested positive in East Godavari, followed by 141 in Srikakulam. No teacher from Krishna tested positive for the virus. The reason for this is that only 26 teachers were tested for Covid-19 in the district while the number of tests conducted in other districts was in hundreds.

With respect to students, 95,763 students were tested for the virus and of them, 575 tested positive. This comes to 0.60 per cent. School Education Commissioner V Chinna Veerabhadrudu, however, maintained that the figures are not alarming.

“About four lakh students are attending school across the State everyday. This means that the number of students who tested positive is not even 1 per cent of the total students attending classes. With respect to teachers also, as on Wednesday, 99,000 teachers, out of the total 1.11 lakh, attended schools and only 829 have tested positive,” he explained.

He also stated that in case of teachers, the Covid tests were conducted before the schools reopened and in most of the cases the results had come after resumption of classes. “In case of students, we cannot conclude that they contracted the virus because they started going to school. There are two reasons – first, all the schools are found to be following each and every rule prescribed as per the Covid-19 protocol and second, in maximum cases the students’ parents are coming to drop and pick up them and barely any students are going home in groups on their own,” said Chinna Veerabhadrudu. A total of 9.75 lakh students have registered for class 9 and 10 in the State.

Of them, around four lakh students have been attending classes. Asked about any change in plans for reopening of schools for other classes in the wake of Covid-19 cases among students and teachers, the Education Commissioner replied in negative. “It is too early to take any such decision. We have to consider the students who belong to the ‘no-tech’ category (does not have access to online classes) as they suffered the most during the lockdown. After observing the situation for a few more days, we will take an appropriate decision. For now, we have instructed the schools to let the students of lower class disperse an hour before the higher class. Similarly, other guidelines will also be added to ensure safety of students,” he added.

Delhi riots: AAP government gives nod to prosecute Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam

November 7, 2020 by Nasheman

The police officer added that prosecution sanction from the Union Home Ministry against Khalid in connection with the Delhi riots conspiracy case had also been received.

NEW DELHI:  The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has given prosecution sanction against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid, who was arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with a case related to the February communal violence in north-east Delhi.

A senior official of the Delhi Police Crime Branch confirmed the development and added that the sanction was given about 10 days ago, and Khalid might now be named in the supplementary charge sheet. “The sanction for prosecution has been approved in all the Delhi riots-related cases registered by the police. Now, it is up to the courts to see who are the accused,” a senior Delhi government functionary said.

The police officer added that prosecution sanction from the Union Home Ministry against Khalid in connection with the Delhi riots conspiracy case had also been received. “To prosecute one under Section 13 of the UAPA, we need sanction from the MHA, which we have already received. For prosecution under Section 16,17 and 18 of the UAPA, we have received the sanction from the Delhi government,” the officer added. Khalid was arrested on September 13 under the UAPA Act in a case related to the communal violence.

He was arrested after 11 hours of interrogation. Earlier, he was questioned by the Crime Branch for a couple of hours on September 2 and also booked under the UAPA in another case related to the riots. At least 53 people had lost their lives and around 200 were injured in the communal violence that broke out on February 24 after a clash between supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and those against the legislation spiralled out of control.

In April, Khalid’s name figured in the FIR registered in connection with the riots. In the FIR, the police had claimed that the communal violence was a “premeditated conspiracy”, which was allegedly hatched by Khalid and two others. He was booked for the offences of sedition, murder, attempt to murder, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and rioting.

Slamming Kejriwal, Khalid’s father SQR Ilyas tweeted: “Arvindkejriwal unveiled.” Taking to Twitter, JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said: “Mr Kejriwal, each and every betrayal won’t be forgotten.” “I am happy for my friends in the US. Regardless of the outcome, they can take solace in the fact that they at least have a real opposition,” Shehla Rashid tweeted

Pinjra Tod members and JNU students Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, JMI student Tanha, Gulfisha Khatoon, ex-Cong councillor Ishrat Jahan, JCC members Zargar, Meeran Haider, Shafa-Ur-Rehman, suspended AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, activist Khalid Saifi, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Salim Malik, Mohd Salim Khan and Athar Khan
