Bengaluru: Tipu Sultan died historic death fighting British – President

October 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday said the erstwhile Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan died a “historic death” fighting the British and called him a “pioneer” in the development of Mysore rockets in warfare.

“Tipu Sultan died a historic death fighting the British. He was also a pioneer in the development of Mysore rockets,” Kovind said addressing the legislators in the Karnataka assembly at a joint session to mark the diamond jubilee celebrations of Vidhan Soudha, the state legislative building.

Recalling the contributions of former Mysore and Karnataka rulers, soldier, politicians and scientists in the growth of the state and the country on the whole, the President spoke of Tipu, leading to a majority of the legislators breaking into loud applause.

The President’s words on Tipu Sultan come just few days after Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, had called Tipu a “brutal killer, wretched fanatic and mass rapist”, ahead of the state’s Tipu Jayanti celebrations to mark the erstwhile ruler’s birth anniversary on November 10.

The ruling Congress in the state began celebrating Tipu’s birth anniversary since 2015, which led to violent protests by the right-wing organisations in the Mysore region and other parts of the state. The BJP in the state has been opposing the celebrations calling Tipu “anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada”.

Known as the ‘Tiger of Mysore’, Tipu Sultan ruled the Mysore kingdom from 1782-1799 succeeding his father Haider Ali.

Karnataka bans riding pillion on 2 wheelers below 100 cc capacity

October 24, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka government has banned riding pillion on two-wheelers with engine capacity of less than 100 CC, giving effect to a 2015 court order. The transport department also banned registration of such vehicles.

“Not only has the registration of such vehicles which have seats for pillion rider been banned, but also riding pillion on two-wheelers below 100 CC is prohibited,” said a government order issued by the transport department on October 13 last.

The order was issued based on a Karnataka High Court order in a case relating to award of compensation to Hemanth, a minor riding pillion who was crippled for life following a road accident in Mysuru in March, 2009. Hemanth and Nithin, who was riding the two-wheeler without a licence, were both aged around 14 then. A recklessly driven car had crashed against their vehicle.

While Nithin escaped with minor injuries, Hemanth was crippled for life with serious head injuries. In its June 15, 2015 order on a petition related to compensation claim by parents of Hemanth, the court had taken note of violations of rules and issued a slew of directions to the education and transport departments and the police to prevent minors from riding motor vehicles above 50 CC.

It had directed that to avoid repetition of similar situation, the transport department should not register vehicles below 100 CC with a pillion seat attached to it and not permit riding pillion on such vehicles (already registered). There should not be any seat for pillion riders in vehicles below 100 CC as mandated under Rule 143(3) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules – 1989, the court had said.

October 24, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: CM Siddaramaiah today warned people voicing their opinion against Tipu Jayanti that strict action would be taken against them.

“The BJP leaders are trying to divide the society. Yeddyurappa had praised Tipu Sultan when he was in the KJP. This shows his double standards,” he told reporters on seeking his reaction to the BJP threatening to launch a protest against the government’s decision to organise the Jayanti.

Tipu was born in Devanahalli near Bengaluru. He died while fighting against British forces. The BJP should not try to twist history, he added.

Opposition to observe November 8 as Black Day to protest note ban

October 24, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Opposition parties on Tuesday said they would observe November 8 as Black Day to protest against the “ill-conceived” decision of the government to spike Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, a year ago.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters that the opposition parties have worked out a joint strategy and would register their protest against the November 8, 2016, demonetisation decision.

“Demonetisation was an ill-conceived and hasty decision of the government. It is unprecedented, perhaps in the entire world, that a government had to alter its policy 135 times within a month,” Azad said, recalling how the government kept changing its rules in the aftermath of the note ban last year.

The decision to mark November 8 as the black day was taken at a coordination meeting on Monday that was attended by JD-U rebel leader Sharad Yadav, CPI MP D. Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi, BSP’s Satish Mishra and Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien.

Two auto drivers who put cockroach in food at Indira canteen held

October 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Two autorickshaw drivers have been arrested for dropping a cockroach in the food served at Indira Canteen to seek “publicity”.

Hemanth and Devaraj, along with two others, went to have food at Indira Canteen in Kamakshipalya on Friday and created a ruckus when they found a cockroach in their meal, the police said.

They then threatened people serving food, besides urging others not to eat.

The police said CCTV cameras installed inside the canteen showed Hemanth bringing the cockroach with him and putting it in the food.

Devaraj knew this but supported Hemanth’s claim, the police said.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is executing the programme in the city, handed over the video footage to the police and lodged a complaint against Hemanth and his friends.

“We have arrested Hemanth and Devaraj. They are autorickshaw drivers from Kamakshipalya. During interrogation they revealed that they did it to seek publicity,” a police officer said.

The officer clarified that they were not affiliated with any political party.

The state government launched Indira Canteens on August 15, offering food at subsidised rates. Breakfast and meals are served at Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively.

At present, the scheme is being implemented in Bengaluru municipal limits.

Based on its success, Indira Canteens will be set up in all district and taluk headquarters from January 1.

BJP offered me Rs 1 crore to switch: Gujarat Patidar leader who joined BJP on Saturday

October 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: In a sting operation of sorts, Patidar leader from North Gujarat Narendra Patel on Sunday dropped a bombshell, presenting wads of currency notes and alleged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tried to buy him.

The allegation has come just a day after two Patidar leaders joined the BJP.

Narendra Patel, who had last month lodged a police complaint against Hardik Patel and three supporters in Patan in North Gujarat and later withdrew it, told a press conference that Patidar leader Varun Patel who joined the BJP on Saturday evening, took him to meet Gujarat BJP President Jitubhai Vaghani and other leaders on Sunday.

“Varun took me around in Gandhinagar and then took me to Shree Kamalam office of the BJP and introduced me to Jitubhai Vaghani and some ministers. He then took me to a room and handed over a bag of Rs 10 lakh cash as token and promised to pay me Rs 90 lakh tomorrow after a party function which I was required to attend,” Patel told a crowded a press conference late on Sunday.

Narendra Patel ‘joined’ the BJP just a couple of hours earlier before he made the allegations, and was welcomed with a saffron scarf in front of media cameras.

He said: “It all happened in so much hurry, they immediately called the media to present me and I had to make that show.”

“They made a deal of Rs 1 crore on me. One crore? Even if they bestow the entire Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on me, I will not be bought over. Even if I have to die, fighting for the cause,” Patel claimed.

Narendra Patel is the convenor of North Gujarat, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), of Hardik Patel.

Bengaluru: Amid row, photos of Jagadish Shettar, Yeddyurappa in ‘Tipu’ events go viral

October 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Amid a heated debate on Tipu Sultan’s birthday celebrations, old photographs of former chief ministers and senior BJP leaders B S Yeddyurappa and Jagadish Shettar participating in programmes allegedly related to Tipu Sultan have gone viral on social media. The photo of Shettar shows him dressed as Tipu Sultan.

Former deputy chief minister R Ashoka and former Lok Sabha member D B Chandre Gowda are also seen wearing the headgear in the viral photos.

However, Shettar denied that the photo was from Tipu Jayanti celebrations. “It was from an award ceremony of the party’s minority morcha, where we were given headgears and swords,” he said.

BJP sources claimed that Yeddyurappa’s photo was taken in 2010 at an Iftar party and had nothing to do with Tipu Sultan.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah has said Shettar had written a preface to a book praising the valour of Tipu. Shettar had called Tipu a patriot in a book written by historian Sheikh Ali.

“When Yeddyurappa was in KJP (Karnataka Janata Paksha), he had celebrated Tipu Jayanti and Shobha Karandlaje had also attended the event. Now why is Yeddyurappa opposing Tipu Jayanti? They (BJP) are opposing it for political reasons,” Siddaramaiah said.

“These photographs are proof of the BJP’s double standards and hypocrisy. The BJP leaders who had earlier praised Tipu Sultan are now criticizing him for political gains,” he said.

The Siddaramaiah government has decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10, when the BJP is planning to call a statewide protest against the ‘minority appeasement’ politics.

Many BJP leaders, including Union Minister Ananth Kumar Hegde, had refused to join the birthday celebrations of Tipu Sultan, terming him “anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada.”

BJP general secretary and MP Shobha Karandlaje said the party will launch a protest if the government goes ahead with the celebrations.

“There is no need to include the names of BJP leaders in the invitation on the pretext of following protocol. The government is spreading communal hatred by repeatedly organising Tipu Jayanti.” Shobha said.

The Siddaramaiah government has decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10, when the BJP is planning to call a statewide protest against the ‘minority appeasement’ politics.

Rajasthan ordinance a ‘pernicious instrument’ to harass media: Editors Guild

October 23, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Editors Guild of India has asked the Rajasthan government to “withdraw the harmful ordinance” that bars the media from reporting on accusations against public servants, judges and magistrates without its sanction.

The ordinance is a “pernicious instrument” to harass the media, the Guild said in a statement last night. “The ordinance promulgated by the state government last month was ostensibly done to protect the judiciary and the bureaucracy against false FIRs.

“But in reality it is a pernicious instrument to harass the media, hide wrongful acts by government servants and drastically curb the freedom of the press guaranteed by the Constitution of India,” it said.

The Rajasthan government had last month promulgated The Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Ordinance, 2017, that seeks to protect serving and former judges, magistrates and public servants in the state from being investigated for on-duty action, without its prior sanction.

It bars the media from reporting on such accusations till the sanction to proceed with the probe is given by the government.

Rather than taking stern measures to prevent and punish those who indulge in frivolous or false litigations, the Rajasthan government has passed an ordinance that is bent on “bludgeoning the messenger”, the Guild said.

While the Guild has always stood for fair, balanced and responsible reporting of FIRs filed in courts of law, it believes that the remedy being employed by the government is “draconian” and gives it “untrammelled power” to even imprison journalists for reporting matters of public interest.

“The Guild requests the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to withdraw the harmful ordinance and prevent any Act from being passed that would endanger the freedom of the press,” it said.

Andhra: Drunk man rapes woman in broad daylight, no one helps

October 23, 2017 by Nasheman

Visakhapatnam: A 28-year-old woman was raped by a man, who was allegedly drunk, on the footpath of Vishakhapatnam in broad daylight on Sunday. The passers-by did not come to the aide of the woman, instead, an autorickshaw driver recorded the crime on his mobile phone.

The accused was identified as 23-year-old Ganji Siva, a truck driver, according to The Indian Express. Police arrested him on Sunday night after the autorickshaw driver gave them the video of the incident.

The incident took place between Railway New Colony and Railway Station at 2 pm. The woman was sitting under a tree when Siva sexually assaulted her. She has been admitted to King George Hospital, police said.

Siva made threatening gestures at passers-by, which discouraged them from helping the woman, police said.

“The woman had left her home in Vepagunta near Pendurthi on the outskirts of Vizag after a tiff with her husband and had arrived in Vizag on a bus early Sunday. She took shelter under a tree on the pavement when Siva assaulted her. He is an alcoholic and drug addict,” Inspector Ramana told the IE.

“The video shows several people passing by but no one stopped to help the woman. Her husband is a labourer and they fought Sunday morning after which she left home and took shelter on the pavement. She has been admitted to KGH,” he added.
