Bengaluru: A special investigation team (SIT) probing the killing of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh outside her house in Bengaluru has extracted an enlarged picture of a motorcycle-borne youth, who is suspected to have conducted a recce of the area before the incident.

A police officer, who is part of the team, confirmed that the picture had been extracted from one of the two video clips they had obtained from a CCTV camera.

Police took the assistance of a forensic science laboratory abroad to stretch the picture.

The face of the suspect was not clear because he was wearing a helmet, the officer said.

The SIT has already released three sketches of two suspects, made based on eyewitness accounts.

Gauri Lankesh, known for her strong anti-right wing stand, was shot dead on September 5 evening outside her residence in Bengaluru.

The incident had triggered widespread outrage, leading to protest rallies across the country.

The Karnataka government has formed a 21-member SIT, led by Inspector General of Police B K Singh, to investigate the case.

Patna: As a 9-year-old girl died at Patna AIIMS while her poor father completed the formalities for her treatment and an official posted at the counter refused to help him, the opposition RJD on Wednesday demanded a high-level probe into the matter.

Raushan Kumari, suffering from high fever for six days, died near the Outdoor Patient Department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Tuesday.

Her father Rambalak and his wife, residents of Kajra village in Lakhisarai district, brought her to AIIMS, following which he was directed by the staff to get a ‘parcha’ (registration card) made at the OPD counter.

As Rambalak, a daily wager, stood in the queue at the counter, his wife told him the girl’s condition had deteriorated. As Rambalak pleaded with people standing in a long queue to allow him to get the formalities completed out of turn, no one paid heed. He even pleaded with the clerk deployed at the counter, but was asked to come in queue.

“By the time Rambalak left the counter after getting the registration done, his daughter had died,” a staff of a private agency contracted for cleaning operations at the hospital said on condition of anonymity.

To add to his agony, the distraught man was allegedly not even provided an ambulance by AIIMS officials to ferry the body to his village. With little money on his person, he carried his daughter’s body on his shoulder for nearly four km to an auto-rickshaw stand at Phulwari Sharif here.

AIIMS Director Dr Prabhat Kumar Singh said he had no information that a critical patient had died due to lack of treatment.

“As far as a ‘parcha’ is concerned, doctors treat critical patients without it and later their registration is done. But I will inquire into this case if it has happened,” he said.

Interestingly, Patna AIIMS does not have an Emergency Ward.

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad flayed the Nitish Kumar government for its “apathy towards the poorest of the poor” which, he claimed, led to the girl’s death, and demanded a high-level probe.

“Everything has collapsed in Bihar, including law and order, education, and health. The latest incident of the girl’s death at Patna AIIMS vindicates our stand. There is no facility for the poor for treatment — they have been left to die, as happened in this case.”

He also took a dig at Union Minister of State for Health Ashwani Kumar Choubey, who last week reportedly suggested that patients from Bihar should be treated at Patna’s AIIMS and not in AIIMS at Delhi.

Choubey’s alleged remark about Biharis “crowding” AIIMS at Delhi even for minor ailments had drawn criticism from opposition parties.

Lalu Prasad said: “Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi have no time for genuine health issues. Both are busy showing their faces in the media, more or less on the lines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

“Girls are dying for want of ‘bhat'(rice) in Jharkhand and lack of treatment in Bihar,” the RJD chief remarked while referring to the death of 11-year-old Santoshi Kumari in Simdega district in neighbouring Jharkhand due to starvation.

Bangalore Literature Festival, Bengaluru’s flagship community funded literary event on the cultural calendar of the city, is all set for a sixth edition on October 28 and 29 at the Hotel Lalit Ashok lawns in Kumara Krupa High Grounds, Bengaluru.

Building on the success of over the past five years, this year Bangalore Literature Festival (#blrlitfest) has a “Speak Up, Speak Out” theme and will feature a host of distinguished authors, speakers and artistes including Ramachandra Guha, Perumal Murugan, Paul Zacharia, Ambai, Hardeep Singh Puri, Suketu Mehta, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, NS Madhavan, Girish Karnad, Sonal Mansingh, Gideon Haigh, Twinkle Khanna and others.

Over the years the Bangalore Literature Festival has become the most sought after and must-attend event for readers and writers, with its enriching and stimulating literary sessions, interviews and panel discussions. Ranchi: Activists alleged that PDS outlets in Jharkhand’s Simdega district refused to give ration to a family, since their ration cards had gotten cancelled for not being linked to Aadhaar. Eleven-year-old Santoshi Kumari allegedly died of starvation on 28 September, after going without food for eight days.

In an exclusive report, Scroll found out that in Simdega’s Karimati village, the local dealer had been refusing to give ration to the Kumari’s family, saying that their ration card wasn’t linked to Aadhaar and hence was no longer valid.

The family does not have Aadhaar cards. Non-profit organisations Right to Food Campaign and NREGA Watch discovered that the PDS outlet had taken off the name of Koyli Devi, the child’s mother, along with those of 10 other families as their cards were not linked. Activists confirmed with Jaldega block office that Koyli Devi’s card had indeed been cancelled. The activists placed a request for a new card explaining the circumstances, but the card arrived two weeks after Santoshi’s death.

In February this year, the Centre made it mandatory to have Aadhaar numbers to access subsidised ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS). The victim’s mother said that since school was shut for Durga Puja holidays, Satoshi didn’t have access to the mid-day meals she usually had. The girl’s father is not sound of mind and her mother and sister makes no more than Rs 80-90 a day cutting grass for others, reports Scroll.

Government officials, however, have argued that Santoshi died of malaria, not starvation.

Not just subsidised ration, the February 28 notification from the government also made it mandatory for children to have Aadhaar cards for access to mid-day meals in government schools. In August this year, Hindustan Times reported that only 42% children in the state have enrolled for Aadhaar. It also said that according to a notification from the Union ministry to Rajasthan government, the deadline for enrolling into Aadhaar was 31 August, 2017. Hindustan Times reported that 37 lakh students in 49,000 government schools in the state ran the risk of being denied mid-day meals if they did not get enrolled under the Aadhaar scheme within the stipulated deadline.
