HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a 216-foot statue of Ramanujacharya here and highlighted the 11th century saint’s message of equality of all.

Modi, who was on a half-day visit to the city, participated in worship at the venue at Muchintal on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The Prime Minister participated in the ‘Purnahuti’ of ‘Vishwaksena Ishti Yagya’. The Yagya is for fulfilment of goals. He offered the ‘sankalpa’ of the Yagya for the ‘Amrit Sankalp’ of the country and dedicated the yagya to 130 crore countrymen.

Tridandi Srimannarayana Chinna Jeeyar Swamy of Sri Ramanujacharya Ashram conceptualised the statue. “Ramanujacharya demonstrated that social progress and remaining true to one’s roots can go hand in hand,” Modi said.

“In today’s world, when it comes to social reforms and progress, it is believed that reforms will take place away from the root. But, when we see Ramanujacharya, we realise there is no conflict between progressiveness and antiquity. It is not necessary to go far from your roots for reforms. Rather, it is necessary that we connect with our real roots, become aware of our real power,” he said.

Ramanujacharya is giving the message of equality in the form of a grand Statue of Equality, he said.

He emphasised that the country today is working collectively for development of all without discrimination and social justice for all so that those who have been oppressed for centuries become partners in the development of the country.

Schemes like Pucca houses, Ujjwala connections, free medical treatment up to Rs five lakh or the free electricity connections, Jan Dhan accounts, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have strengthened Dalits, the backward and the deprived, he said.

Describing Ramanujacharya as a shining inspiration for the unity and integrity, he said the saint was born in the South but his influence is on the whole of South to North and East to West. He said the freedom struggle was not just a fight for power and rights.

In this fight, there was a colonial mindset on one side, and the idea of live and let live on the other, he said.

On the one hand, it was a hysteria of racial superiority and materialism and on the other hand, it was a belief in humanity and spirituality. And in this battle, India and its tradition were victorious, he said.

On the richness of the Telugu culture, he spoke about 13th century Kakatiya Rudreshwara Ramappa temple in Telangana recently being declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Pochampalli in the State being recognised as the best tourism village by the World Tourism Organisation.

Modi also spoke about the glorious contribution of the Telugu film industry which is making its presence felt globally and much beyond Telugu-speaking areas.

The statue is made of ‘panchaloha’, a combination of five metals: gold, silver, copper, brass, and zinc and is among one of the tallest metallic statues in sitting position. It is mounted on a 54-foot high base building named ‘Bhadra Vedi’.

It has floors devoted for a Vedic digital library and research centre, ancient Indian texts, a theatre, an educational gallery detailing many works of Sri Ramanujacharya.

Ramanujacharya worked tirelessly for the uplift of people with the spirit of every human being equal regardless of nationality, gender, race, caste or creed.

The inauguration of the statue is a part of the 12-day Ramanuja Sahasrabdi Samaroham, the ongoing 1000th birth anniversary celebrations of Ramanujacharya.

Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, religious guru i Tridandi Srimannarayana Chinna Jeeyar Swami were present on the occasion.

Karnataka bans clothes that disturb harmony, public order

February 6, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Seeking to end the hijab (head scarf) controversy in education institutions in Karnataka that has begun taking political colour, the State government on Saturday ordered banning wearing clothes which disturb equality, integrity and public order in schools and colleges.

“Invoking 133 (2) of the Karnataka Education Act-1983, which says a uniform style of clothes has to be worn compulsorily. The private school administration can choose a uniform of their choice,” the government order said.

It said the students have to wear the dress chosen by the College Development Committee or the appellate committee of the administrative board of the pre-university colleges, which come under the pre-university education department.

“In the event of administrative committee not selecting a uniform, clothes which disturb equality, integrity and public law and order should not be worn,” the order said.

The government order noted that the KEA-1983 had explained that all students should wear a common uniform so that they should belong to a common family and behave in a manner that there is no discrimination.

The order also said that the second pre-university or the 12th standard is crucial for the students in their life.

A common programme has been chalked out for all the schools and colleges in the state for the benefit of students, the order said.

“However, the education department has noticed that in some education institutions, the boys and girls have started behaving according to their religion, which hurts the equality and unity,” it added.

The order also cited the rulings of Supreme Court and various High Courts in India in favour of uniform.

Initially the controversy was restricted to Udupi and Chikkamagaluru in the beginning of January as Muslim girls started attending classes wearing Hijab.

In protest, the Hindu students started attending classes wearing saffron scarves around their neck.

Gradually the issue spread to other parts of the state where Muslim girls demanded permission to attend classes wearing head scarves.

The issue of Hijab had snowballed into a major controversy with political parties striving to derive mileage over it.

While the Congress leaders backed Hijab, the BJP said it will not allow ‘Talibanisation’ of education institutions.

Congress Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has thrown his weight behind Muslim girls on their right to wear the hijab to educational institutions, accused the BJP and RSS of trying to create communal disharmony throughout the State in the name of Hijab.

He urged Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to immediately put a brake to this and arrest those who instigate people.

Further claiming that the main agenda of the Sangh Parivar is to deny education to Muslim girls in the name of Hijab, Siddaramaiah said, “PM Narendra Modi speaks about ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’. Is he not aware of this incident?”

“The Constitution has given the right to practice any religion which means one can wear any clothes according to their religion. Prohibiting ‘Hijab’ wearing students from entering school is a violation of fundamental rights,” he added.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP’s state president and Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel said the government will not allow hijab at educational institutions and will take strict measures to ensure that things go as per rules of the school, and won’t let things be turned into “Taliban like”.

“There is a BJP government in this state, there is no room for hijab or any other related incidents. Schools are temples of mother Saraswathi (goddess of education); everyone should abide by rules and regulations there. Bringing religion there is not right, what students need is education, if someone can’t follow rules they can choose their path elsewhere,” he said.

Kateel also hit out at Siddaramaiah accusing him of bringing in divisive policies like celebrating Tipu jayanti and schemes like ‘Shadi Bhagya’ among others aimed at creating rift between the communities, when he was CM.

With the issue snowballing into a major controversy and the matter coming up before the High Court, Chief Minister Bommai on Friday held a meeting with Law and Education departments, and the government has asked educational institutions to follow existing uniform related rules, until the Court comes out with an order in this regard, next week.

The Karnataka High Court on February 8 will hear the petitions filed by five girls studying in a Government Pre-university College in Udupi, questioning hijab restriction in college.

JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, hitting out at both the BJP and Congress for the controversy, said instead of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’, they are trying to make it “Beti Hatao”, “they should stop it.

” He asked the government to maintain the status quo at institutions where hijab was allowed till now, and not to allow it at places where it has started recently. Instead of Hindu-Muslim issue, children being used for such thing is more dangerous,” he added.

Calling hijab row, a systematic conspiracy, Kannada and Culture Minister V Sunil Kumar said, hijab or burka can be worn from home to college premises, but on entering classrooms everyone should wear uniform and it is the system.

Vijayapura second in Karnataka to clock 100% Covid vaccination

February 6, 2022 by Nasheman

VIJAYAPURA:  The district became only one in North Karnataka and second in the State to achieve 100 per cent vaccination in both the doses against the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the state health bulletin, “The district health authorities have administered first dose of vaccine to over 17.04 lakh people against the target of 16.34 lakh. With this, the first dose of vaccination rate stands at 105 per cent. With regard to the second dose, the district has vaccinated overall 16.34 lakh people, achieving 100 percent.”

“Bengaluru Rural is the only other district in the State to have achieved 100 per cent vaccination. However, over 12 districts have jabbed over 90 per cent of the eligible people with both the doses. The state vaccination rate for first dose stands at 101 per cent and for second dose at 88 per cent,” as per the bulletin.

The Covid vaccination drive kick-started in the district in January, 2021. According to previous population census held in 2011, the district administration had set a target of inoculating 16.34 lakh people. However, at present 17.54 lakh people have been vaccinated with the first dose.

The district administration paced up the second dose vaccination after the vaccination mela launched on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on September 16, 2021. The district managed to achieve 100 per cent vaccination with both doses in just over one year.

DC P Sunil Kumar said “With the efforts of health personnel, Asha workers and staff of other departments, the district administration has achieved cent per cent target of vaccination with both doses to all the eligible people in the district. ”

UP polls: Akhilesh rejects BJP’s double engine rhetoric, alleges betrayal of farmers

February 6, 2022 by Nasheman

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav

LUCKNOW: Rejecting the oft repeated BJP rhetoric of ‘double engine’ rule, Samajwadi Party chief and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the ruling dispensation of the BJP both at the Centre and UP had betrayed the farmers of the state due to their wrong policies.

“Farmers had to protest for a year against the three contentious farm laws. As elections approached in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, the BJP withdrew the black laws,” the SP chief said, adding that the saffron party had “destroyed” the farmers.

He sought an explanation from the ruling party as to why the three farm laws were rolled back if the party was finding them favourable for the country’s farmers earlier.

The SP chief claimed that the BJP had betrayed the farmers by not fulfilling its promise of double income for farmers. “We should come together to defeat them,” he added.

Calling the upcoming elections vital for India’s politically most crucial state, the SP chief said it would decide the future of the country and its democratic set-up as well.

The SP president said the upcoming Uttar Pradesh polls was going to be “bhaichara” versus the BJP, adding that the saffron party was indulging in negative politics as opposed to the positive one practised by his party.

Calling out the BJP’s slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” the SP chief said it was the most fake and deceptive catchline coined by the ruling party.  He also raised the issue of dousing Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. It may be recalled that the Amar Jawan Jyoti flame at India Gate was merged with the Eternal Flame at the National War Memorial, barely 400 metres away, last month. However, many including ex-servicemen and opposition leaders had criticised the Centre’s decision.

Moreover, Akhilesh referred to the upcoming Central Vista saying the saffron party was bringing in a new parliament and might change the Indian constitution as well. Akhilesh also hit back at Yogi Adityanath over his ‘garmi’ jibe asking if “our baba Chief Minister is a compressor”. “If he feels so much garmi (heat), he should go back to Uttarakhand,” said Akhilesh.

Notably, CM Yogi has been launching a veiled attack on the SP in his poll rallies across western UP saying that the candidate of “Tamanchawadi Party” from Kairana is threatening that the “garmi (heat)” is yet to calm down. “After March 10, the heat will cool down,” the Uttar Pradesh CM has been claiming.

Akhilesh is making his debut in the UP Assembly elections by contesting from Karhal constituency in his traditional stronghold of Mainpuri.

Those behind Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination opened fire at me: Owaisi

February 6, 2022 by Nasheman

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi (Photo | EPS)

BAGHPAT: AIMIM national president Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday cautioned minorities against Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, claiming that he will not keep his promises once the election process is over.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief also alleged that those behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi were the ones who opened fire at him.

“They fired bullets at me because I dared to look into the eyes of BJP and tell the truth. Those who fired at me are the very people who had murdered Mahatama Gandhi. If you kill one Owaisi, lakhs of Owaisis will be born,” he claimed at a public meeting in Asara village in support of party candidate Anees Ahmed from Chhaprauli seat.

On Thursday, gunshots were fired at Owaisi’s vehicle at Hapur in western Uttar Pradesh when he was returning to Delhi after campaigning for the assembly elections.

On the participation of Muslims in politics, he said, “They go to the doorsteps of others and ask for tickets, they should come to me, we will give (them) tickets. Sounding a cautionary note against the SP president, Owaisi claimed, “I’m alerting you today that Akhilesh will cheat you again. “

“He is giving a lollipop to minority community leaders that they will be made Rajya Sabha members, MLCs, but he will not do anything later. He said his party will make minority community members sit on their shoulders and polish their politics but “Akhilesh will drown them.”

In an attempt to highlight the power of a vote, he said that just as an elephant is tied from a chain, similarly Muslims have been tied up by political parties. “They should recognise their power and break the chains to become as strong as an elephant,” he said.

Owaisi also attacked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and alleged, ‘Yogi Baba’ tells lies like ‘his Ustad (Narendra) Modi’.

No one should come to school to practice religion: Araga Jnanendra on hijab row

February 4, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU/MANGALURU: Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra on Thursday said students should neither wear hijab (headscarf) nor saffron shawls to schools and colleges, and stressed that they should wear only the prescribed uniform. His remarks come amid a row over some students of a government PU college in Udupi wearing the hijab in classrooms. In another incident, girl students of a government PU college in Kundapur, who reached the institution wearing the hijab on Thursday, were stopped at the gate.

Addressing the media here, Jnanendra said educational institutions should overcome the barriers of religion and caste and promote the feeling that all are one. Religious practices should be followed in places of worship like temples, churches and mosques. In educational institutions, students should have the feeling of oneness and there should be an academic atmosphere for students to develop a culture of national unity and integrity, he stressed.

“No one should come to school for practicing their religion,” he said, while responding to a question on students wearing saffron shawls as a counter to a few students wearing the hijab. He said he has directed the police to keep an eye on fundamental organisations and to take stern action against those who disturb unity.

The issue has caught national attention with former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor slamming the authorities. Mehbooba, who also sports a hijab, said, “Beti bachao-beti padhao is yet another hollow slogan. Muslims are being denied the right to education simply because of their attire. Legitimising the marginalisation of Muslims is one more step towards converting Gandhi’s India into Godse’s India.”

Tharoor tweeted, “It’s been a strength of India that everyone is free to wear what they want. If the hijab is disallowed, what about the Sikh turban? The Hindu’s forehead mark? The Christian’s crucifix? This college is going down a slippery slope. Let the girls in. Let them study. Let them decide.”

Davanagere: Members of the Hindu Jagaran Vedike (HJV) on Thursday staged a protest in front of the DC’s office in Davanagere, urging the government to give directions on wearing of uniforms across all schools and colleges in the state. In a memorandum to the government submitted through DC Mahantesh Bilagi, the activists said the adamant attitude of some Muslim girls over wearing of hijab and attending classes cannot be tolerated, as it is a fundamentalist mindset. Educational institutions are centres where religion, caste and other factors are not given preference, and proper dress code and uniform will bring equality among students.

“A section of society is stating that wearing of hijab is a right provided by the Constitution, this is wrong. The same Constitution states that all residents of India are equal, hence there shouldn’t be dress difference between Hindus and Muslims,” they said.

Karnataka sore with startup ranking, asserts Bengaluru’s still numero uno

February 4, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The latest Economic Survey has declared New Delhi as the country’s startup capital, taking into account the number of startups that were added between 2019 and 2021, but Karnataka asserts that Namma Bengaluru is numero uno when it comes to the start-up ecosystem and unicorns.

Some are also of the view that it is an unfair comparison, as the NCR region is much larger compared to Bengaluru city. Bengaluru is home to the highest number of unicorns and is compared with cities like New York, Berlin and Tel Aviv. Of the 85 unicorns in India, 34 are based in Bengaluru and 25 of them emerged between April 2019 and December 2021, sources in the government said, backing up the argument that Bengaluru is indeed the startup capital.

The unicorns have a total valuation of about $150 billion and 55% of that is from Bengaluru based start-ups, they said and added that India has seen four Decacorns (companies with a valuation of $10 billion and above, so far) — Flipkart, Paytm, Byju’s and Swiggy, of which, 75% (Flipkart, Swiggy and Byju’s ) are f rom Bengaluru. Prashanth Prakash, chairman, Startup Vision Group, Government of Karnataka, stressed that it is not about the numbers, but the ecosystem.

Talent, diversity of start-ups and capital that the eco-system attracts are the real measures of what is the startup capital and there is no other city that matches Bengaluru on these three parameters, he said. Over a period, Bengaluru startups have come to be known to be the most professional and have carried the tradition of good governance and integrity that was started in the city by Infosys, he added.

There is also a need to look at the emerging areas like artificial intelligence (AI), space technology, FinTech, EduTech and others in which Bengaluru has a leadership position compared to others, he told The New Indian Express. The Karnataka government has launched the start-up policy in 2015 and Bengaluru has received global recognition as the start-up hub.

It is ranked 10th as per Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2021 by Startup Blink and ranked 23rd among global cities as per the Global Start-up Ecosystem Ranking report of 2021. Karnataka IT&BT Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said the startup city of Bengaluru is the innovation gateway to India, which is the fastest-growing large economy in the world.
