February 4, 2022 by Nasheman

Parmesh S Jain

BBMP issued Executing Distress Warrants on foreclosure of three properties against pending property taxes in Yelahanka zone

A team of Officers from the Revenue Department, led by the Joint Commissioner of Yelahanka Zone have executed distress warrants against Manyata Tech Park, Royal Grand Kalyana Mantapa, and Reva University (within Byatarayanapura Assembly Constituency) for failing to pay their property tax dues.

These property owners of ward number 05 (Jakkur) and 06 (Thanisandra) within Byatarayanapura sub-division had property tax dues.

As per 148 (4) of BBMP Act 2020, the below-mentioned places were visited by officers on 1st February 2022 for the collection of pending property taxes.

Manyata Tech Park :

Total Station Survey was carried out in the year 2018-19 for the 9 different blocks within Manyata Tech Park at Nagavara Ring Road in Thanisandra Ward.

It was observed that the measurement of the surveyed buildings was falsely (less than the actual) declared during property tax payments.

Accordingly,a notice with a total amount of Rs. 1,01,38,87,611,including a penalty not less than twice the tax evaded, was issued to the property owner.

But they had paid only a sum of Rs. 28,67,97,434 with the remaining Rs. 72,70,90,177 as dues.

Even though a demand notice was issued to pay the pending amount, the owner failed to pay the amount. Leading to the execution of the distress warrant.

Royal Grand Kalyana Mantapa :

The Royal Grand Kalyana Mantapa, owned by Shri N Anandamoorthy, the property owner of 320/72/1 on Nagavara Thanisandra Main Road in Thanisandra Ward, had a total property tax dues of Rs. 70,68,930 with taxes pending since 2012-13.

When a demand notice was issued on tax payment, the owner had given a cheque of Rs. 9 lakh which failed the clearance due to lack of funds in the owner’s account. Hence, the warrant of foreclosure was executed.

Reva University:

The Total Station Survey was carried out in the year 2018-19 for all buildings of Reva University, owned by Rukmini Educational Charitable Trust in khatha number 101 in Kattigenahalli village of Jakkur ward.

It was observed that the measurements of buildings were falsely (less than the actual) mentioned during the declaration of property tax payments.

Accordingly, the calculated tax due is Rs. 16,95,64,078. The distress warrant was executed for non-payment of tax dues even after issuing demand notice.

Among the three assets of the Yelahanka Zone, tax due from Manyata Tech Parks is Rs. 72,70,90,177,that of Royal Grand Kalyana Mantapa is Rs.70,68,930,and Reva University has dues of Rs.16,95,64,078.

Even after several demand notices were issued, they have failed to pay the taxes. So, today, Smt. Poornima KAS, Joint Commissioner of Yelahanka zone executed the distress warrant to all three properties.

February 4, 2022 by Nasheman

Parmesh S Jain

The Custom officials on Monday busted international drug racket and seized a parcel from Germany containing 2.59 kg of MDMA drugs estimated to be worth Rs 1.80 crore ordered through dark web, which was landed at the Foreign Post Office (FPO) in Bengaluru.

A Nigerian national who came to collect the drug parcel was caught.

Customs officials said in a release, the parcel carrying large quantities of drugs in the form of pills in different colours of pink, blue and yellow reached the FPO in Chamarajpet in Bengaluru on Saturday after being shipped from an unknown address in Germany.

The Customs team on duty at the post office sent the parcel through a scanning machine to spot something amiss about its base area.

They opened the parcel to unearthed coloured pills pasted to the bottom of the box in an attempt to avoid detection by authorities.

A lab test was conducted to ascertain the multi-coloured pills weighing 2.59 kg as Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), a psychoactive recreational drug which is a banned substance that is notoriously known as Ecstasy pills in drug circles.

The Customs team then began a probe into the receiver of the drug parcel and reached out to a man in the city in the guise of delivering it. However, getting whiff of investigators on the drug trial, the suspect who is a resident of Bengaluru, attempted to flee but was nabbed in a dramatic chase on the highway by the Customs team.

Gujarat HC dismisses PIL seeking rehabilitation of slum dwellers affected by bullet train project

February 3, 2022 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has dismissed a PIL seeking rehabilitation of families evicted from a slum to make way for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, but said these people can still approach state authorities which should consider their claim “with a sympathetic approach.”

The court passed its order on Tuesday on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Bandhkaam Mazdoor Sangathan, seeking rehabilitation of 68 to 70 families evicted from a slum near a railway bridge in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati area to make way for the bullet train project.

The court, however, ordered rehabilitation of some of the families living in an area given to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRC), which is carrying out the project.

In its plea, the workers’ union had claimed that the ‘JP Ni Chali’ slum was illegally demolished by the state and railways authorities for the bullet train project, without providing them an alternate accommodation as per state government policies.

They had sought the court’s direction to restrain authorities from carrying out any further eviction and to provide them immediate relief, including temporary shelter. They had also sought rehabilitation under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

The slum comprised 68 to 70 houses comprising around 350 people, with all of them possessing requisite documents, entitling them for rehabilitation as per the Gujarat slum rehabilitation policy and government housing schemes, they said in the plea.

The slum was demolished on March 15, 2021, where these families resided for over three decades, said the plea.

The first demolition happened in 2018 to make way for the bullet train project. After that, the slum dwellers moved to the road side. The demolition was then carried out in March last year, despite several representations made by the slum dwellers to the railway and local authorities, it said.

The plea also claimed that the NHSRC had at first given verbal assurance for rehabilitation, but later turned it down.

The state government had submitted before the court that the slum dwellers were not entitled for benefits under its resettlement and rehabilitation policy, and they could not be considered as project-affected persons.

COVID outbreak in India camp: Dhawan, Gaikwad, Shreyas and multiple non-coaching staff test positive

February 3, 2022 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A COVID-19 outbreak hit the Indian cricket team on Wednesday as three players — senior opener Shikhar Dhawan, reserve opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer — tested positive for the virus along with four support staff during their mandatory isolation period before the start of West Indies series.

The Indian team assembled in Ahmedabad on January 31 for the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies and were going through a three-day isolation period post their break from the South Africa series.

The series starts in Ahmedabad on February 6 with India’s 1000th ODI match but it is now a foregone conclusion that the trio will be missing the series as they will have to undergo a week-long isolation and then return with two negative RT-PCR tests.

“Three players — Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan have tested positive. However there are multiple COVID positive cases among non-coaching administrative support staff. It could be between two to four people,” a veteran BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“The players are largely asymptomatic and hopefully will be fine by the end of the isolation period. You feel bad for Shikhar as he might have to miss the series and he is not a part of T20 squad,” the official said.

Even more disappointing is young Ruturaj Gaikwad’s case as this is the second time in one and a half years that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

“If you remember, Ruturaj had tested positive in UAE during the 2020 IPL and went through hell. He had a 14-day quarantine back then and missed first part of the season in the Emirates. This is the second time he has tested positive,” the official said.

It is confirmed that captain Rohit Sharma, senior players like Virat Kohli and coach Rahul Dravid have all tested negative as of Wednesday.

“They have returned negative as of today.”

All those who tested negative will complete their mandatory isolation on Thursday. They will enter the bubble, if they test negative again on Thursday.

“The testing protocol set by BCCI medical team is for every day RT-PCR as RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) is often not conclusive. Although teams are supplied with RAT kits in case any player shows symptoms and wants to do a self test,” the veteran official said.

It is expected that M Shahrukh Khan, R Sai Kishore, Rishi Dhawan, who are stand byes for the series, will now get a look-in to be in the squad.

As far as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner is concerned, Venkatesh Iyer, a specialist opener in the T20 squad, or Jharkhand’s Ishan Kishan could be tried out.

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra nominated for Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award

February 3, 2022 by Nasheman

London: Olympic gold medal-winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was on Wednesday nominated for the prestigious Laureus ‘World Breakthrough of the Year’ award, making him the first Indian to be featured in the short-list for this category.

He was clubbed alongside tennis stars Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu among others.

The 23-year-old Chopra last year became only the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal and first in track and field in Tokyo with a throw of 87.58 metres in his second attempt. The performance catapulted him to superstar status in India and also brought him worldwide acclaim.

“…it’s a great honour for me to be recognised in the wider sporting world for what I achieved in Tokyo. From being a kid in a small village in rural India who only took up sport to get fit, to standing on top of an Olympic podium, it’s been quite an eventful journey so far,” Chopra said in a statement issued by The Laureus Academy.

“I feel privileged to be able to represent my country and win India medals at the global stage, and now to have this recognition from Laureus and be considered alongside such exceptional athletes is a really special feeling.”

He is now only the third Indian to fetch a Laureus nomination after cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and wrestler Vinesh Phogat.

Phogat was nominated in the ‘Laureus World Sporting Comeback’ category for the year 2019, while Tendulkar won the ‘Laureus best sporting moment in the last 20 years’ in 2020.

The moment in consideration was Tendulkar’s teammates lifting him on their shoulders after India won the 2011 ODI World Cup at home.

A panel of more than 1,300 sports journalists and broadcasters of the world have selected the nominees in each of the seven categories for this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards.

The winners will be revealed in April, following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the world’s ultimate sports jury, made up of 71 of the greatest sporting legends of all time.

At the 2016 World Under-20 Championships, Chopra won the gold medal.

Also nominated with Chopra for the Breakthrough Award are FC Barcelona’s football prodigy Pedri, the 19-year-old who was voted best young player at the Ballon d’Or, Yulimar Rojas, who broke the 26-year-old triple jump world record, and swimmer Ariarne Titmus, who twice beat champion Katie Ledecky at 200 and 400m in Tokyo.

The battle for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award will be one of the most competitive ever.

The short-list features NFL star Tom Brady, Bayern Munich’s prolific goal-scorer Robert Lewandowski, new Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, tennis world no.1 Novak Djokovic, and two of the greatest Olympians — swimmer Caeleb Dressel, who won five gold medals in Tokyo, and Eliud Kipchoge, who won back-to-back marathon gold medals.

Several top-notch Olympic performances dominate the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year category.

Elaine Thompson-Herah matched fellow Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt with gold medals in the 100, 200 and 4×100 metres relay; Allyson Felix passed Carl Lewis as the most decorated track and field US Olympian; Australian swimmer Emma McKeon’s four gold and three bronze tied the record for the most medals ever won by a woman in a single Olympic Games; and American swimmer Katie Ledecky won two more gold and two silver medals.

Italy’s men’s football team is among the frontrunners for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award after their victory in Euro 2020. There are two other football nominees — the Argentina men’s football team, including Lionel Messi, who won the Copa America; and FC Barcelona women’s football side, who won their first Champions League.

They are joined by China’s Olympic diving team, who won gold medals in seven of the eight events, the Milwaukee Bucks, inspired by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who ended their 50-year wait for a second NBA championship, and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team which won a record eighth consecutive Constructors’ World Championship.

Forty-two MLAs wanted me to be Punjab CM after Amarinder’s exit: Sunil Jakhar

February 3, 2022 by Nasheman

Forty-two MLAs wanted me to be Punjab CM after Amarinder's exit: Sunil Jakhar
Senior Punjab Congress leader Sunil Jakhar

Chandigarh: Senior Punjab Congress leader Sunil Jakhar has claimed that 42 MLAs wanted him to be the chief minister of the state after the unceremonious exit of Amarinder Singh last year.

Jakhar could be heard saying this in a video — that has surfaced online — while addressing a gathering in Abohar on Tuesday.

Jakhar’s nephew Sandeep Jakhar is contesting the Punjab assembly polls as a Congress candidate from the Abohar seat.

Sunil Jakhar was among the front runners for the chief ministerial post. But the party preferred Charanjit Singh Channi, who became the first chief minister of Punjab from the Scheduled Caste community.

Forty-two votes went for Sunil (Jakhar), 16 for Sukhjinder Randhawa, 12 votes for Maharani Preneet Kaur (Amarinder Singh’s wife and Patiala MP), six votes for Navjot Singh Sidhu and two votes for (Charanjit Singh) Channi, Jakhar said.

He also said he even declined the post of deputy chief minister offered by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to him.

Forty-two MLAs voted for me despite the fact that I was nothing at that time. I was not even PPCC president, Jakhar said, pointing out that the party had sought to know from the MLAs whom they wanted to be the chief minister after the exit of Amarinder Singh.

Seventy-nine MLAs were called up to know whom they wanted to be the CM. Sunil was not even an MLA, he added.

Amarinder Singh was made to resign as the chief minister by the Congress amid a bitter power tussle with Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

The chances of Jakhar becoming the chief minister were scuttled after the statement of senior Congress leader Ambika Soni who had said the party should go with a Sikh face.

Charanjit Singh Channi, who replaced Amarinder Singh last year, is the first chief minister of Punjab from the Scheduled Caste community.

On January 27, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi had announced at a virtual rally that the party would go with a chief ministerial face in the Punjab elections.

Over the past several weeks, Channi and state Congress chief Sidhu have, directly or indirectly, made a case for themselves to be declared as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.

Two Indias created, one for rich and one for poor; gap widening: Rahul Gandhi

February 3, 2022 by Nasheman

New Delhi:: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the government alleging that two Indias, one for the rich and one for the poor, have been created and the gap between them was widening.

Speaking first from the Opposition side in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, he said the address to a joint sitting of Parliament didn’t touch the central challenges facing the country and was a “list of bureaucratic ideas” instead of a strategic vision.

The presidential address made no mention of unemployment, the Congress leader claimed.

There are two Indias — one for the rich, one for the poor — and the gap between the two was widening, Gandhi alleged and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to start working towards bringing the two Indias, created by this government, together.

He claimed that 40 per cent of India’s wealth has gone to a chosen few.

Today, the earnings of 84 per cent of Indians have dwindled, pushing them towards poverty, Gandhi said.

‘Make in India’ cannot happen as the unorganised sector has been completely destroyed, he alleged.
